Useful Expressions
Skim the book report again and circle the verbs in different tenses.
My favourite book is The Old Man and the Sea. It was written
in 1952 by the American writer Ernest Hemingway. The book
became popular very quickly. In 1953, it won the Pulitzer Prize.
The main character is a fisherman who hasn’t caught anything
for months. One day he catches a huge fish, but he has to fight for
days to kill it. He finally succeeds, but he can’t pull the fish onto his boat. When the fisherman is on his way back, sharks eat the fish, leaving nothing but bones.
This book has taught me not to give up or doubt myself. I’m
inspired by how hard the fisherman fights, even though he loses the
fish in the end. As Hemingway said, “Man is not made for defeat.
A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Even though I’ve
already read the book three times, I’m not tired of it yet. If you’ve
never read Ernest Hemingway, I recommend this book.

Of all the books I’ve read, The Three-Body Problem is my favourite. It was written by Chinese writer Liu Cixin in 2008. It is a famous science fiction novel and won the Hugo Award in 2015.
The story is set in modern China and the future. The main character is Wang Miao, a scientist. He finds an alien civilisation called Trisolarans, who want to invade Earth. The most exciting part is when humans fight to protect their home from the advanced aliens.
This book has taught me to think big and never give up. I’m inspired by humans’ courage to face huge challenges. As Liu Cixin shows, hope is the most powerful thing. I’ve read it twice and still love it. I strongly recommend this book to all science fiction lovers. Don’t miss it!

When it comes to history books, Red Star Over China is my top choice. It was written by American journalist Edgar Snow in 1937. Snow visited China’s revolutionary areas and wrote the real story of the Chinese Red Army.
The story is set in the 1930s. The book focuses on the Red Army soldiers and their leaders, like Mao Zedong. They lived a simple life and fought bravely for Chinese people. The most moving part is how they kept hope even in hard times.
This book has taught me the meaning of courage and sacrifice. I was deeply moved by the revolutionaries’ spirit. It helps me understand China’s history better. I’ve read it many times and never get tired. I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It will teach you the power of perseverance.
