九、阅读理解。
One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart (运货马车). The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm”! Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong”, sir, said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter?” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable (马厩). Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

My Favourite Book — The Old Man and the Sea
Part 1: Read and Explore
Have you ever read a book that changed the way you think? For me, that book is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. I first read it when I was 13, and I have already read it three times. I‘m still not tired of it.
The book was written in 1952. It became popular very quickly. In 1953, it won the Pulitzer Prize, one of the most famous book prizes in the world.
The story is simple but powerful. It is about an old fisherman named Santiago. He hasn’t caught any fish for 84 days. People think he is unlucky. But Santiago does not give up. On the 85th day, he goes out to sea alone. He catches a huge fish — bigger than his boat! He fights with the fish for two days and two nights. He is hurt and tired, but he never lets go.
At last, he kills the fish and ties it to his boat. But on his way home, sharks come. They eat the fish piece by piece. Santiago fights the sharks with a knife and a stick. He kills several of them, but the sharks are too many. When he finally reaches the shore, only the fish‘s head and bones are left.
Most people would be sad. But Santiago is not. He knows he fought hard. He did not give up. As Hemingway wrote, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”
This book has taught me a very important lesson. It taught me not to doubt myself or give up when things are hard. In school, when I face difficult exams or fail a test, I think of Santiago. I tell myself, “Keep fighting. You can be destroyed, but you cannot be defeated.”
I have already recommended this book to all my classmates. If you have never read it, please give it a try. You will not regret it.
