It lies near the geographic center of England. It’s one of England’s major industrial and commercial areas. Here’re some places in Birmingham you may be interested in living in. Solihull Located 7.5 miles southeast of Birmingham, Solihull offers the best of both worlds for the perfect combination of city and country living. With several top-rated schools, Solihull is a perfect location for families, and with over 1,500acres of parks, there’re plenty of green spaces to keep the kids entertained as well. With easy transport links into Birmingham, it’s a great choice for commuters (通勤人员) and what’s more, Birmingham Airport is located in Solihull. Erdington Situated five miles northeast of the city center, Erdington has to be one of the best places to live in and around Birmingham. This is a very well-connected city suburb, with easy motorway access, great bus links and a railway station on the Cross City Line. Digbeth If you’re looking to buy your first home in Birmingham, Digbeth could be the perfect choice. The area is a hub for the creative industry, with the Custard Factory and Fazeley Studios both hosting a huge variety of digital and cultural businesses. It’s very tolerant of all kinds of culture, making it one of the most dynamic places to live in. Edgbaston Edgbaston is one of the richest areas in Birmingham, well-known for its green spaces and Birmingham Botanical Gardens. There’re many other attractions for those not interested in sports, including the pretty Victorian campus of Birmingham University and multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. It is a suitable place to live in. 1. What’s special about Solihull? A. It is very suitable for the old. B. It has the largest park in Birmingham. C. It is the trading center of Birmingham. D. It shows the mix of rural and urban life. 2. Which place presents cultural diversity? A. Digbeth. B. Erdington. C. Edgbaston. D. Solihull. 3. What is the author trying to persuade readers to do in Birmingham? A. Attend university. B. Go on a tour. C. Buy houses. D. Start businesses. B I went into our laboratory feeling depressed. For months, I had been trying to recycle some of our laboratory’s plastic waste into 3D-printed laboratory tools, but it wasn’t going well. My colleagues suggested thinking about how to avoid having so much plastic waste in the first place, which boosted my spirits and led to a series of changes in how we operate in the laboratory. I raised the idea of creating 3D-printed laboratory tools out of some of our waste, but it was also tricky to get the recycled material into a consistent shape that could be fed into the 3D printer. After months of struggling, I feared that my vision might not live up to my expectations, so it was really a welcome relief when my colleagues were eager to brainstorm other ways to reduce our environmental footprint. We decided to create a group sticking to pushing for “greener” ways to operate, inviting researchers in other laboratories at our institution as well as our own. Over the following months, we launched a series of initiatives that we feel have made a difference. We introduced new recycling bins to each laboratory, designed ways to reduce our use of plastic items and purchased meters to track the energy consumption of various pieces of laboratory equipment. That helped us create rules for each device, which we outlined on stickers: “Turn me off at the end of the day,” “Never turn me off,” or “Turn me off if empty or not in use.” We also increased the temperature of several low-temperature freezers after realizing some samples didn’t have to be stored so cold. I’m still disappointed that I was not able to fully realize my 3D-printing vision, and I am committed enough to keep trying. But I’ve also learned that if one approach isn’t working, sometimes it’s best to take a step back and look for other solutions. I’m thankful that with the help of the academic community around me, we were able to do that. 4. Why was the author upset for months? A. His lab tools were outdated. B. He failed to realize his vision. C. His idea was denied by co-workers. D. He produced too much plastic waste. 5. Why did researchers put stickers on the devices? A. To identify the ownership. B. To decorate the equipment. C. To give energy-saving reminders. D. To offer cost-efficient approaches. 6. What will the author probably do in the future? A. Develop new 3D printers. B. Seek a greener laboratory. C. Quit 3D-printing research. D. Pursue an academic degree. 7. What can we learn from the text? A. One tree cannot make a forest. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. C Medical artificial intelligence (AI) can perform with expert-level accuracy and deliver cost-effective care. IBM’s Watson diagnoses (诊断) heart disease better than cardiologists (心脏病专家) do. Chatbots give better medical advice to patients in place of nurses. Some forecast that medical AI will enter 90% of hospitals and replace as much as 80% of what doctors currently do. Yet, as our recent research suggests, patients show a strong resistance to medical AI. The reason, we found, is not the belief that AI provides lower care. Nor is it that patients think that AI is more costly or less informative. Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take into account one’s specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances that apply to an individual. No wonder that medical AI providers are given a cold welcome. There are a number of steps that care providers can take to overcome patients’ resistance to medical AI. For example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether to have a surgery to each patient’s unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the treatment recommendations of the AI provider. In addition, health care providers could also deliver individualized health care by explaining how the algorithms (算法) work and sharing patients’ reviews with the media. Having a physician confirm the recommendation of an AI provider should make people more willing to accept AI-based care. People are comfortable using medical AI if a physician remains in charge of the ultimate decision. AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients. But harnessing the full potential of them will require that we first overcome patients’ doubt of having an algorithm, rather than a person making decisions about their care. 8. What made people resist the medical AI? A. A sufferer’s temper ignored by medical AI. B. People’s lasting trust in a human doctor’s ability. C. The concern about its personalization in treatment. D. The accuracy of the information from medical AI. 9. What can be a solution to patients’ resistance according to the author? A. Treating sufferers as average patients. B. Providing a more specific treatment. C. Getting the algorithms prioritized in time. D. Keeping away from the influence of a physician. 10. Which word can replace the underlined word “harnessing” in the last paragraph? A. Weakening. B. Storing. C. Destroying. D. Using. 11. What is the suitable title for the text? A. Advantages of Medical AI B. Potential Application of AI C. How AI Replaces Nurses in Healthcare D. The Challenge That Medical AI Faces D In a world of music streaming services, access to almost any song is just a few clicks away. Yet, the live performance lives on. People still fill sweaty basements, muddy fields and gilded concert halls to hear their favourite musicians play. And now neuroscientists might know why—live music engages the brain’s emotion centres more than its recorded counterpart. Concerts are immersive (沉浸式的) social experiences in which people listen to and feel the music together through crescendos, key changes and rhythmic drops. Moreover, they are dynamic — artists can adapt their playing according to the crowd’s reaction. It was this last difference that led neuroscientists, based at the Universities of Zurich and Oslo, to study the brain responses of people listening to music. In the “live” experiment, participants lay in an MRI scanner listening to the music through earphones, while a pianist was positioned outside the room. The pianist was shown the participant’s real-time brain activity as a form of feedback. In the recorded condition, participants listened to pre-recorded versions of the same tunes. The scientists were interested in how live music affected the areas of the brain responsible for processing emotions, particularly the amygdala, an area deep inside the brain. The results, just published in the journal PNAS, revealed that live music had a significantly greater emotional impact. Whether the music conveyed happiness or sadness, dynamic live performances led to increased activity not only in the amygdala but also other parts of the brain’s emotion processing network. The researchers also found that participants’ brain activity tracked the acoustic (声学的) features of the music, like tempo and pitch, far more closely when it was played live. While the study didn’t fully recreate the live concert experience, the findings suggest that artists’ ability to adjust their performance in real time contributes to the emotional resonance (共鸣) of live music. Some musical acts now attempt to recreate live concerts, such as ABBA Voyage, an immersive pre-recorded VR concert, but without artists’ capacity to read audience’s mood and respond accordingly, it will never quite match the real thing. 12. Why do people attend live shows despite music streaming services? A. Because they prefer being with friends at a concert. B. Because they enjoy the process of finding popular music. C. Because they intend to meet their favorite musicians in person. D. Because they value the emotional connection live music brings. 13. The role of the pianist play in the “live” experiment is to _______. A. observe the participants’ brain activity as feedback B. compare the effectiveness of live performances and recorded ones C. provide live accompaniment to participants inside the MRI scanner D. demonstrate their ability to read and respond to the audience’s mood 14. What did the study published in PNAS find about the impact of live music on the brain? A. Live music affected only the amygdala of the brain. B. The brain responded more intensely to acoustic features of live music. C. Live music had a reduced emotional impact compared to recorded music. D. The participants’ brain activity was especially sensitive to dynamic music. 15. What does the author suggest by mentioning ABBA Voyage in the last paragraph? A. It fails to create a perfect performing atmosphere. B. It matches the sound quality of live performances. C. It greatly stirs up the audience’s emotional response. D. It lacks artists’ response based on audience’s feedback. Why was school created?____16____Especially on test days, many students wonder exactly why they’re being subjected to such terrible and unusual punishment! Although Mrs. Ford, his head teacher, appreciated his stories, the label of “nerd” (呆子) from his classmates cast a shadow over his passion for writing. Discouraged and feeling that his writing served no purpose in the eyes of others, he thought about giving it up. One day, during recess (课间), as Philip was absentmindedly taking down some random events of the day, he heard an anxious voice calling out for help. He put down his pen, glanced out the window, and saw a gathering of people near the playground fence. With concern, he walked over and joined the crowd. In the centre of the crowd was Robin, a sporty boy in the class, who was injured on the knee and bleeding heavily. Robin was playing kickball when the ball unexpectedly shot over the playground fence, landing in the old park next to the school. As he ran to get the ball, he tripped over the overgrown weeds, his left knee crashing into a broken bench. Robin’s face paled, perhaps from both pain of the bleeding knee and his panic. Concerned classmates surrounded him, and Mrs. Ford hurried to the scene, providing some initial care before sending him to see the doctor. Amidst the lively discussion of the crowd, Philip absorbed the information that the park had been abandoned for ages. Turning his attention to the park, he was astonished at its awful state. Overrun with weeds, broken benches, rusty sports facilities, and scattered rubbish, the park was practically a dangerous place for students. Philip was probably a nerd when involved in reading or writing, but he was never ignorant of the world around him. He felt a strong desire to do something, and the only way he could think of was to pick up his pen. The next day witnessed Philip getting down to work. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As the article spread, offers of help poured in. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 汕头市金山中学2024届高三考前保温试题 英 语 本试卷共8页,满分120分,考试用时120分钟。 A Birmingham is the second largest city of the United Kingdom. The Challenge That Medical AI Faces 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第二段中“Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take into account one’s specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances that apply to an individual. (相反,对医疗人工智能的抵制似乎来自一种信念,即人工智能不会考虑到个人的具体情况。人们认为自己是独一无二的。相比之下,他们认为人工智能提供者提供的医疗服务适合治疗普通患者,但不适合解释适用于个人的独特情况)”可知,人们担心医疗人工智能无法提供适合个人的个性化治疗,因此抵触它。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“For example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether to have a surgery to each patient’s unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the treatment recommendations of the AI provider. (例如,如果人工智能提供者能够根据每个患者的独特特征和病史量身定制是否进行手术的建议,那么患者可能会遵循人工智能提供者的治疗建议)”可知,作者认为根据患者的具体情况提供更具体的治疗,可能可以解决患者对医疗人工智能的抵触。故选B项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients. D In a world of music streaming services, access to almost any song is just a few clicks away. 12. D 13. C 14. B 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The next day witnessed Philip getting down to work. With a heavy heart, he wrote an article about the terrible condition of the park and the unfortunate incident involving Robin. Pouring his heart into the words, he appealed to the community to help restore the old park. Never before had he felt that words could be so powerful. Later that day, Philip handed the article to Mrs. Ford, who appreciated his deep concern for the park and managed to put the article on local news. As the article spread, offers of help poured in. People went out of their way to donate materials and help fix the broken facilities.
