Do you ever feel like you study for hours only to forget everything the next day? This is a
common struggle, but science offers a solution.German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus
discovered the"Forgetting Curve",which reveals how information slips from our minds over time.

What is the Forgetting Curve?
The curve shows that the sharpest decline in memory occurs within the first 24 hours after
learning.Without review,we typically forget about seventy percent of the new material within just
one day.
How to Beat It:Spaced Repetition
To transform short-term memories into long-term ones, you should use "Spaced Repetition".
This involves reviewing material at increasing pauses to"reset"the forgetting curve.

Karlee Shivley can't wait to step onto campus as a student at Virginia Tech this fall, but for a
long time, college felt like an impossible dream.Growing up,she had few examples to guide her.
Her parents never attended college, and the process seemed confusing and financially challenging.
"As a senior 2 student at Bassett High School,I really didn't think I'd be attending a four-year
university,"Shivley recalled."I didn't know where to start,and financially,it didn't seem possible."
That uncertainty shaped her early high school years, limiting how far she believed she could go
Things began to change when she became involved in TRIO,a support program. With
encouragement from her advisors,Shivley started to see herself differently."They encouraged me
to push myself academically,"she said,"and showed me where to find scholarships and apply for
financial aid."More importantly, she began to believe that college was not only possible, but worth
striving for.
Motivated by that support,Shivley challenged herself in ways she had never imagined. She
took dual-enrollment courses,attended Governor's School,and stayed committed to demanding
academic goals.By the time she graduated from Bassett High School, she had earned an associate's
degree in science-a milestone that transformed her confidence and ambitions.
"They encouraged me to shoot for the stars,"Shivley said. And she did. This fall, she will
attend Virginia Tech, majoring in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, supported by a well-
known Presidential Scholarship.
Looking back,Shivley sees her journey as more than a list of achievements. The experiences
reshaped how she viewed her abilities and her future. What once felt out of reach now feels earned.
From doubting whether college was possible to preparing for a challenging scientific field,Shivley

When leaving a Marshall Islands atoll(),Alson Kelen prefers to sail after sunset.Without
visual clues,he relies on delicate bodily sensations to sense the movement of the sea."That's how
the Marshallese navigate,"he explains."They navigate with their stomach."
For thousands of years,Marshallese navigators have crossed vast stretches of ocean using a
traditional technique known as wave piloting.Rather than following stars or landmarks, they read
the direction, rhythm and interaction of ocean swells reflected off islands.Mastering this skill
requires years of observation and practice. Those who succeed earn the title of ri meto,or"person
of the sea",a role that carries both technical expertise and cultural responsibility.
In the mid-20th century, many Indigenous Marshallese communities relocated. As
populations were displaced, the practice was at risk of being lost. The art survived largely through
a small number of expert navigators, including Captain Korent Joel, who trained his younger
cousin,Mr.Kelen,before his death in 2017.
In early August,an international research team joined Marshallese sailors on a two-day voyage
to better understand the cognitive()processes behind ocean navigation and to support the
preservation of this endangered tradition.Unlike navigation on land, which depends heavily on
fixed visual landmarks,open-ocean travel presents a constantly changing environment, requiring a
different way of sensing space and direction.
During the journey, participants regularly recorded where they believed they were and noted
the perceived direction of incoming swells.Advanced instruments measured motion, eye movement
and physiological responses, allowing researchers to compare embodied knowledge with scientific
data. The team included neuroscientists, philosophers, anthropologists and Marshallese sailors,
reflecting a collaborative approach that valued both science and tradition.
Although data analysis is ongoing,Kelen sees the project as a step toward cultural renewal.By
revisiting how their ancestors survived and traveled across the ocean,he believes the Marshallese
can protect a vital part of their identity. As he puts it,a navigator is not just a sailor, but a keeper of
ocean culture.
28.What is emphasized about wave piloting in paragraph 2?
A.Its reliance on modern equipment.
B.Its simplicity and ease of learning.
C.Its concentration on star observation.
D.Its unique method and high demands.
29.Why did wave piloting nearly disappear?
A.Loss of native communities
B.Shortage of ocean swells.
C.Lack of scientific guidance.
D.Competition from modern navigation.
30.What was the main goal of the research voyage?
第4页共8页
A.To train more ri meto for the future.
B.To prove the superiority of traditional skills.
C.To document and analyze the navigation skill.
D.To find faster and safer routes across the ocean.
31.What does Kelen think of a navigator's role?
A.The pioneer of sea protection.
B.The explorer of new territories.
C.The recorder of oceanic data.
D.The guardian of cultural heritage

Dogs are known for mastering action commands like“sit”or“stay”'.However, when it comes
to remembering the names of specific objects-such as their favorite stuffed toys-most dogs
struggle.Only an exceptional group of "gifted word-learner"dogs can remember the names of
hundreds of items. While scientists have identified about 50 such dogs, the underlying mechanisms
of their lexical(词汇的)ability remain a mystery.
Now,groundbreaking research published in Science is pushing the boundaries of what these
extraordinary dogs can achieve.Scientists already knew these dogs could learn names during direct
playtime. In the latest study, researchers from Eotvos Lorand University discovered that they can
also acquire new vocabulary simply by eavesdropping.
Ten gifted dogs, including a Border collie named Basket and a Labrador named Augie,
participated in the experiment. They watched their owners hold a new toy and discuss it with
another person.Afterward, the dogs were asked to get that toy from a pile in another room.
Remarkably, seven out of the ten dogs successfully identified the new toy by passively listening to
the conversation.
"This is the first time we have seen a specific group of dogs able to learn labels from
overhearing interactions,"said study author Shany Dror. The dogs even succeeded when the toy
was hidden in an opaque(不透明的)box, creating a disconnect between seeing the object and
hearing its name.
This ability to eavesdrop is rare in the animal kingdom, previously seen only in parrots and
apes().It is also a cornerstone of human development,as little babies often pick up words
their parents never intended to teach them. However, since these dogs are fully grown, their
cognitive processes likely differ from those of human children.
While your average furry friend might not be picking up names when begging for food, this
research highlights the hidden cognitive depth of animals.Scientists hope to continue studying
these enthusiastic subjects to uncover what makes them so special.
32.What does the underlined word"eavesdropping"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Following simple action commands.
B.Learning by listening passively.
C.Interacting with other dogs actively
D.Training during direct playtime.
33.What were the dogs required to do during the experiment?
A.Play with experimenters.
B.Fetch a specific toy.
C.Name unfamiliar toys.
D.Follow their owners'action.
34.What will future research focus on?
A.Comparing dogs with parrots and apes.
B.Improving dogs'ability to obey command.
C.Finding the hidden cognitive mechanisms.
D.Teaching average dogs everyday vocabulary.

When I was sixteen,I was a top runner in high school until a serious injury forced me to stop.
36 I realized I had ignored what truly mattered while pursuing sports glory, especially my studies.
Driven by a new passion,I began diving into books about brain science and how we store
information.Eventually,I developed learning techniques, which changed me from an average
student into a straight-A achiever.
Before revealing my approach,I must address a common trap:traditional note-taking.Many
students believe that filling notebooks with beautiful handwriting is the key to success.37 It
prioritizes recording over understanding. If you simply follow suit, you will likely achieve only
average results.
One major issue with note-taking is that it often turns into mindless copying. When you
transcribe (phrases from a textbook or lecture, you aren't mentally processing the material.
38 Furthermore, reviewing these notes later creates an "illusion (of competence".You
mistakenly believe you have mastered the content, when in fact you are only recognizing the words.
You may argue,"39"That's great in the short term, but how much of that information did you
remember a week after the test? The truth is,most students get by with rereading notes, but when
they face a comprehensive exam later on,they struggle.
To truly excel as a learner, you need a method that promotes long-term memory.During my
college years,I looked forward to the finals week. While my classmates were stressed, attending
endless review sessions,I was calm and confident. My techniques had already enhanced the
concepts in my mind,so when finals came around,I passed them effortlessly.40
A.However,that method is often ineffective.
B.I became fascinated by the science of learning
C.This turning point made me reflect on my priorities.
D.Rereading is one of the least effective study methods
E.But I got an A on my last test just by rereading my notes!
F.I'm going to share those techniques with you in the next section.
G.Information goes in one ear and out the other without leaving anything.
