I think i've finally decided what to write about in my paper. It's a new museum in washington, D. C. really. I picked the museum to a science museum up in canada. IT looks sort of like a spaceship. I read about that. I was built about twenty years ago, I think, by the same architect who designed the building. I'm interested in Douglas smith. That's him. But I can't imagine Smith designing anything in the traditional classical style. Well. this new structure has to fit in with the architecture of the surrounding buildings, but its style is anything but traditional. I don't mean that it's one of those big glass boxes they call modern architecture. Though this build has rounded free form shapes and sweeping curves. IT is supposed to represent the natural forms like the kenyon clifts in the western states. Rock formations that were shaped by water and the wind sounds fantastic. But I wonder why that sort of style would be chosen for a building in washington, D. C. That's easy. This place is called the national museum of american indian, and it's devoted to exhibits of native american culture, including those of the west. And for smith, this is his own family treasure, too. And in designing this museum, he was careful to respect the various native american values and traditions, like paying attention to the directions of winds and the position of the sun in different seasons of the year. Wow, a non traditional building designed to showcase some of north americans. All these traditions. interesting. Eighteen, what do the two museums mentioned in the conversations have in common? Nineteen, what did Douglas Smith design the new building to look like? I'd like to bring you up to date with changes in the school that will affect your children. The school has grown as the local population has increased, and I can now give you some news about the lower school site. IT will move to new buildings that will be constructed on the main site. Another change concerns the canteen. The canteen is always very busy throughout the lunch period, but there is only one serving point, so most pupils have to wait a considerable time to be served. So we've had a new food hall built, and this will come into you next week. But one thing we ask you to do to help in the smooth running of the food hall is to discuss with your children each morning which type of food they want to eat that day, so they can go straight to the relevant serving point. You may be wondering what will happen to the old canteen. We'll still have tables and chairs in there, and pupils can eat food from the food hall or lunch they've brought from home. Eventually, we may use part of the canteen for storage, but first we'll see how many pupils go in there at lunch time. Okay, let's take a break and then i'll talk more about our school. Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent. Tool to interpret pig emotions Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings Researchers — led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind — said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent. 21. Which can be used for cross-cultural communication? A. Tool to interpret pig emotions. B. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation. C. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease. D. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings. 22. Who will most probably be interested in Ithaca? A. A historian. B. A biologist. C. A chemist. D. A sculptor. 23. What do the inventions have in common? A. They focus on health issues. B. They are developed by Facebook. C. They aim to promote productivity. D. They are AI-driven technology tools. 【答案】21. B 22. A 23. D 【解析】 【导语】主要回顾了2022年几个著名的人工智能研究成果。 【21题详解】 细节理解题。根据小标题Meta’s speech-to-speech translation下的“Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. (Facebook 的母公司 Meta 表示,它已经开发了一种技术工具,可以直接在英语和闽南语之间进行翻译,闽南语是一种没有广泛使用的书面形式的口语。)”可知,Meta的语言和语言之间的翻译能用于跨文化交流。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. (这个工具被称为伊萨卡,旨在帮助历史学家修复这些著作,并确定它们写成的时间和地点。)”可知,历史学家最有可能对Ithaca感兴趣。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据Meta’s speech-to-speech translation部分的“Meta said it trained its AI models (Meta表示,它训练了自己的人工智能模型)”、Method to identify Parkinson’s disease部分的“Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. (研究人员宣布了一种新的人工智能方法来识别帕金森病)”、Tool to interpret pig emotions部分的“The scientists developed an AI-driven approach (科学家们开发了一种人工智能驱动的方法)”和Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings部分的“Researchers — led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind — said they developed an AI system (由Alphabet旗下人工智能公司Deep Mind领导的研究人员表示,他们开发了一种人工智能系统)”可知,这些发明的共同之处在于它们都是由人工智能驱动的技术工具。 B Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is generally considered the most recognized painter of all time. The striking colour, forceful brushwork, and shaped forms of his work powerfully influenced modern art. Only recognized at the end of his life, his struggles and triumphs have coloured exactly what we imagine it is to be an artist. Works like Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace at Night, and The Starry Night have transcended the world of painting to become iconic symbols, not only of a single artist but a whole time period and art movement. Van Gogh’s unique way of looking at the world was ahead of its time with the consequence that, unable to earn a living from his work or remove his doubts about the value of his achievements and overcome his mental crisis, he committed suicide, alone and penniless. Not only did van Gogh leave the world the great gift of his visionary paintings but his letters, written to his younger brother Theo (1857-1891) and others, give us a fascinating and, at times, heartbreaking insight into how Vincent battled rejection, indifference, and self-harm to achieve his goals in art and life. Born in a small Netherlands village, van Gogh was a quiet, self-contained youth, spending his free time wandering the countryside to observe nature. At 16 he was apprenticed (学徒) to an art dealer. Daily contact with works of art aroused his artistic sensibility, and he soon formed a taste for art. Yet his approach to life darkened when his love was rejected by a London girl in 1874. After entering the ministry, he was dismissed by church authorities in the winter of 1879. Penniless and feeling that his faith was destroyed, he sank into despair. It was then that van Gogh began to draw seriously, thereby discovering his true mission as an artist in 1880. His artistic career was extremely short, lasting only 10 years. In 1890, he shot himself and died two days later. An added tragedy was that the artist was just beginning to arouse the interest of art critics. However, of the more than 800 oil paintings and 700 drawings that constitute his life’s work, he sold only one when he was alive. 24. What led to the artist’s not being recognized when he was alive? A. His mental crisis. B. His foresight in art. C. The striking color of his works. D. His penniless state. 25. What enables people to further learn the artist’s struggling life? A. His personal letters. B. His art style. C. The symbolism movement. D. His tragedy death. 26. Which paragraph is about the artist’s early life? A. Paragraph One. B. Paragraph Two. C. Paragraph Three. D. Paragraph Four. 27. When was the artist devoted to painting? A. In 1880. B. In 1890. C. In 1869. D. In 1874. 【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。介绍了著名画家文森特·梵高的生平、艺术成就、人生困境及其创作历程。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Van Gogh’s unique way of looking at the world was ahead of its time with the consequence that, unable to earn a living from his work or remove his doubts about the value of his achievements and overcome his mental crisis, he committed suicide, alone and penniless.(梵高看待世界的独特方式超前于他的时代,结果他无法靠作品谋生,也无法消除对自身成就价值的怀疑,更无法克服精神危机,最终在孤独与穷困中自杀。)”可知,他在艺术上的远见卓识、超前眼光导致他生前没有得到认可。故选B。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“his letters, written to his younger brother Theo (1857-1891) and others, give us a fascinating and, at times, heartbreaking insight into how Vincent battled rejection, indifference, and self-harm to achieve his goals in art and life.(他写给弟弟提奥以及其他人的书信,让我们得以深刻且时常心碎地了解梵高如何对抗拒绝、冷漠与自我伤害,以实现自己在艺术和人生中的目标。)”可知,是他的个人书信让人们得以进一步了解他挣扎的一生。故选A。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Born in a small Netherlands village, van Gogh was a quiet, self-contained youth, spending his free time wandering the countryside to observe nature. At 16 he was apprenticed to an art dealer.(梵高出生在荷兰的一个小村庄,年轻时安静内敛,闲暇时在乡间漫步观察自然。16岁时他在艺术品经销商那里当学徒。)”可知,第三段讲述的是艺术家的早年生活。故选C。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“It was then that van Gogh began to draw seriously, thereby discovering his true mission as an artist in 1880.(就在那时,梵高开始认真绘画,并于1880年找到了自己作为艺术家的真正使命。)”可知,他在1880年全身心投入绘画事业。故选A。 C Inspired by butterfly wings, a team of German researchers have developed a new kind of robotic wings that can work using only magnetic fields (磁场). The new wings created by the Technical University of Darmstadt researchers need no batteries or electronics. The researchers drew inspiration from the remarkable efficiency and endurance of monarch butterflies, known to have incredibly long migrations between Canada and Mexico. Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies start a 3,000-mile journey from their North American breeding grounds to the warmer climate of southwestern Mexico for the winter. These new robotic wings achieve energy-efficient flight by combining movement with passive bending, which was rarely copied outside the natural world. The team, led by Professor Oliver Gutfleisch and Dr. Denys Makarov, used a combination of flexible plastic fixed with tiny magnetic particles (颗粒) to build the wings. The team found that the magnetic particles, when exposed to external magnetic fields, caused the wings to bend in a manner similar to that of butterflies. Achieving the desired design proved challenging; however, after testing fewer than 12 different designs, the team could develop wings strikingly similar to those that evolved in butterflies. Looking ahead, these new wings could have a wide range of applications. One could be environmental research in which winged robots monitor pollinator populations or measure air quality. They could also be helpful in disasters, with their small, energy-efficient design, enabling robots to navigate dangerous areas for search and rescue operations. The team also pointed out that the new design could also be readily adapted for medical sciences. The principle of using magnetic particles in this way could also open doors for developing new kinds of artificial muscles or other innovative materials that can change shape on demand. While the robotic wings currently rely on external magnetic fields to change shape, the team is optimistic about integrating man-made magnetic field generators into future upgrades of the technology. “We plan to explore what changes to magnetic fields can enable more complex movements and control,” explained Muhammad Bilal Khan, another lead author. 28. What’s the driving power of the robotic wings? A. The air pressure. B. The magnetic field. C. The rechargeable battery. D. The electronic motor. 29. What do we know about the robotic wings? A. They were inspired by butterflies’ flexibility. B. They achieve energy efficiency by moving passively. C. They bend when exposed to magnetic fields. D. A recent study by marine biologists at the University of California focused on the common octopus, a species found in coastal waters around the world, and uncovered new facts about their social learning skills. Unlike most sea creatures, octopuses show little natural social behavior, leading researchers to believe they relied only on individual trial-and-error to learn new skills. For the study, the team set up two groups of octopuses: a “demonstrator” group and an “observer” group. The demonstrator octopuses were trained to open a sealed glass jar with a twist to get a shrimp inside — a task that required specific motor skills. The observer octopuses were placed in separate tanks next to the demonstrators, with a clear view of the jar-opening process but no direct access to the training. Over five short sessions across three days, each observer octopus watched the demonstration at least eight times. A week later, the researchers gave all observer octopuses the same sealed jars. More than 70 percent of them opened the jars successfully on their first try, using the exact twisting method they had watched. In contrast, a control group of octopuses that had no chance to observe the demonstration failed to open the jars within 30 minutes. Dr. Clara Mendez, the lead researcher, noted that the findings challenge the idea that social learning is limited to social animals like mammals or birds. “Octopuses have a highly developed brain, and this study proves they can store and use information from observation,” she said. However, the team still has questions: it remains unclear whether octopuses can learn complex skills this way, and whether their observational learning ability is present from birth or developed with experience. To explore these unanswered questions, marine biologists are designing further studies that will employ a variety of tasks to push the boundaries of our understanding of octopus intelligence. 32. What did researchers think of octopuses in the past? A. They had strong social behavior. B. They were the most intelligent invertebrates. C. They lived in coastal waters around the world. D. They learned new skills only by trying and failing alone. 33. How was the learning ability of octopuses tested? A. By comparing two groups’ results. B. By interviewing other researchers. C. By analyzing the data they collected. D. By doing a survey among marine biologists. 34. What will the researchers do next? A. Study social skills of mammals. B. Prove the observation skills of octopus. C. Observe social learning rules of octopus. D. Explore the unsolved mysteries of octopus intelligence. 35. What can be a suitable title for the passage? A. Octopuses: The Most Intelligent Sea Creature. B. Octopuses: A New Study on Their Living Habits C. Octopuses: Beyond Trial-and-Error Learning. D. Octopuses: Unexpectedly Social Animals. 【答案】32. D 33. I had played the guitar for years, though I was no expert. It was simply my way to relax. So, when I moved into the new apartment, I brought my guitar and my love for music with me. For the first few weeks, the apartment next door remained silent. I knew someone lived there, but I never saw the person. The door was always closed. Then, one quiet afternoon, while I was reading, I heard a sound. It was so faint that I held my breath to catch it. It was from a violin. The music was low and slow, each note seeming to carry a weight of years, like someone telling a sad, beautiful story without words. I put down my book and listened. The melody seemed to be filled with loneliness and memories, and I felt a strange ache in my heart. The next day, I heard it again. This time, I felt a strong pull. I walked to his door and knocked softly. The music stopped. My heart beat faster. After a long moment, the door opened a little. An old man with silver hair looked at me. He said nothing. Feeling a bit awkward, I smiled and said, “Hello, I’m your neighbor. I heard you playing the violin. It was incredibly beautiful. I play the guitar a little bit, I just wanted to say hello.” He looked at me for a while, and then a smile appeared on his face. He opened the door wider and invited me in. I stepped inside, noticing a worn armchair by the window and the smell of old books. His home was simple, filled with books and old photos. In the corner stood a music stand. Next to it was a small table with a photo of a woman, smiling gently. That first meeting was short, but it was the beginning of our friendship. As I turned to leave, he said softly, “Thank you for listening.” Those simple words warmed my heart. I knew we would become friends. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 A few days later, I visited him again with my guitar. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day on, we began to spend time together. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 A few days later, I visited him again with my guitar. I knocked on his door, feeling a little nervous. When he opened it and saw the guitar, his eyes widened with interest. I asked if he would like to hear me play something. He nodded and gestured for me to sit down. I played a simple folk song I had learned years ago. When I finished, he clapped softly and said, “Your music is lovely.” Then, he went to his corner, picked up his violin, and played a short, sweet melody in return. It was his way of saying he accepted me. From that moment, our unspoken bond grew stronger. From that day on, we began to spend time together. He told me he was a former violinist in the city orchestra. After his wife passed away, he moved here and rarely went out. Music was his only comfort. Sometimes, we would try to play together, the guitar and the violin finding a common tune. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was always joyful. We didn’t talk much. Our conversations were in the notes we played. We shared our sadness and our happiness through the music. He was no longer just my neighbor; he was my teacher and my friend. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:finish/complete/conclude ②接受:accept/jump at/embrace ③鼓掌:clap/applaud 情绪类 ①紧张的:nervous/tense/strained/stressed ②令人愉快的:joyful/cheerful 【点睛】[高分句型1] I knocked on his door, feeling a little nervous. B Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is generally considered the most recognized painter of all time. A. In 1880. B. In 1890. C. In 1869. D. In 1874. C Inspired by butterfly wings, a team of German researchers have developed a new kind of robotic wings that can work using only magnetic fields (磁场). D. They were made finally after dozens of designs. 30. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. The potential of the robotic wings. B. Challenges facing the research team. C. The working principle of the robots. D. Uncertainties in developing robotic wings. 31. What does the last paragraph imply about the robotic wings? A. They should still depend on outside magnetic fields. B. Their use is strictly limited to environmental monitoring. C. They are expected to operate in controlled magnetic fields. D. Their new versions will function as well as human muscles. D Octopuses (章鱼), known for their high intelligence among invertebrates (无脊椎动物), have surprised scientists with their remarkable ability to learn by observing others. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Camels are known as the “ships of the desert” They have come to be connected with surviving in difficult situations. They can get through long journeys through hot sand hills. ____36____ In this blog post we will explore the interesting world of camels and dig into the question; how can camels swim? The water is wonderful for camels to swim, and camels certainly own the ability to swim. However it is not their preferred way of transportation. ____37____ They only adapt to watery environments when it is necessary. ____38____ Their large, soft, and thick feet function effectively to keep them afloat (漂浮) in preventing them from sinking into soft sand and their woolly fur can trap air, providing buoyancy (浮力). When camels enter the water, they use a leg-kicking movement, which allows them to move the water well. But it is important to clear up a common misunderstanding. Camels do not store water in humps (驼峰). ____39____ Thus, their swimming has nothing to do with humps. While camels might know swimming, they show skills, when faced with water blocks during their desert journeys. Their adaptability and unique features make them able to travel through different kinds of landscape. Whether it is the hot sands of the desert or the occasional water crossings, they always find a way to survive. Camels are undoubtedly more skilled in the water than one might initially think. They may not be Olympic swimmers. ____40____ A. Do you know why camels can stand heat. B. They usually simply float much of the time. C. The hump causes trouble for the camel when it swims. D. Their humps actually store fat and seldom offer buoyancy. E. However, have you ever wondered if these creatures swim? F. Camels have some special body structures that allow them to swim. G. After all, these desert creatures are best known for their ability to adapt to dry conditions. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Henry was originally a show dog.
