It’s a holiday we had never heard of before we came to live in a village here as Peace Corps community volunteers. It’s unbelievably great. On the Fire Festival, drums beat a quick and regular rhythm (韵律) that locals’ dance to in a circle of bodies, men and women, the old and young, holding torches (火把) of burning grass above their heads, which stands for the light and getting off negative energies. At this moment, this festival is being held at the beginning of the lunar year. The locals are all so lost in the celebration that they don’t pay as much attention to us as they normally will. When they find us taking part just as actively as them, they dance more dynamically and cheer with joy. This method, called assisted migration (迁徙), is meant to save these animals from rising temperatures and habitat (栖息地) loss. Biologist Erie VanderWerf of Pacific Rim Conservation said that climate change is making such actions more necessary. The hope is that one day, these birds can be brought back to their original home if the environment becomes better. This new way of protecting animals is becoming more accepted. There is a plan to change the Endangered Species Act to make it easier to move the most at-risk species to new places. Because of this, officials and scientists have named some animals and plants that might be moved, such as Florida’s Key deer, the Karner blue butterfly, and some desert plants and lizards. However, not everyone agrees with this plan. Some lawmakers say that putting new species into different ecosystems can cause problems we don’t expect, like creating invasive (入侵的) species or harming the environment in unknown ways.
