At break, he skirts the edges(边缘) of the playground, not joining in. He doesn't play sports, so he doesn't mix well with the other boys in his class. His mother is concerned about that. At most schools, this child might become lonely and even sad. But at Graham Elementary School in Naperville, Illinois, teachers moved him around to different groups for class projects until he clicked with another boy. “Suddenly, Zach had a best friend. They would hang out together, and help each other with homework,” says Zach's mother. Sue Clendening, the principal of Graham Elementary, believes that friendships are just as important as schoolwork. For years she had watched children get their feelings hurt at break and they couldn't focus on their lessons afterward. Two years ago, she decided to do something about it. Clendening surveyed the students to learn who had friends and who didn't. She found that 30 per cent of the children in fourth grade said they were often alone on the playground because no one wanted to play with them. Some students even wrote their own names on the survey under the question: “Who most needs a friend?” Clendening shared the survey results with her teachers. She marked lonely kids and got teachers to put them in groups of children where they might make friends. The school also started afterschool clubs like book club and chess club so that children could find likeminded people. Each week, a lunch group brings together shy children and more social children to talk with a social worker. “I believe social skills can be taught the same way as Maths,” says Clendening. “A growing body of research points to social skills being as important as academic(学业的)skills for future success.” ( ) 1. Why does Zach's mother feel concerned? A. Because Zach has trouble making friends. B. Because Zach forms the habit of playing outside. C. Because Zach prefers to go to school alone. D. Because Zach spends too much time on homework. ( ) 2. What did Clendening's survey show? A. Some students were left out and felt lonely. B. Few children had an interest in school activities. C. Most children were unhappy with their grades. D. 30 per cent of students wanted to play in groups. ( ) 3. What is paragraph 6 mainly about? A. How the children feel about social ties. B. How the teachers share the survey results. C. How the school draws out lonely kids. D. How the social workers help shy children. ( ) 4. What do Clendening's words suggest? A. So how can we, as the lender, avoid these problems? According to Bradley T. Koontz, an expert in psychology(心理学), there are some steps you can take. Understanding why there is an unavoidable risk of lending anything to a friend is the first thing. And it's not just the risk of losing the money, but the friendship could also be in danger. __3__ The lender becomes the one in control, while the borrower may feel uncomfortable with the new situation. Similarly, if you try to advise them on what to do with the money, it might make things difficult between you two. In other words, let go—and see it as their money. __4__ Saying ‘no’ is hard when a friend comes asking, but if you need that money, refusing is probably the best choice. If you still want to lend, making a formal agreement and writing everything down can help make sure the money is paid back on time. But some friends may not like being asked to sign something—seeing it as a lack of trust. Finally, for some, it's best to just see the money as a gift and be pleasantly surprised if something comes back. And if you do want to keep your friendship safe, when you need to borrow some money, what should you do? __5__ A. You feel under pressure to help. B. Perhaps a bank is a better option. C. Lending money is a good way to test a friend. D. And if you can't afford to lend something, don't. E. The friend might feel unhappy and end the relationship. F. This is because the action of lending has changed the balance of power. G. But why can lending money be so harmful to our friendships? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 六、 选做拔高题[2025重庆西南大附中联考] For as long as there have been gifts, we have naturally made choices based on the personality and tastes of the recipient(接受者). In fact, a recent online survey conducted by psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin confirmed this tendency. However, what if we have been wrong all along and might actually benefit from turning things around? Curious about this possibility, Human and Aknin wondered whether this common approach to giving gifts missed an important way we connect with others. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother's Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After buying the card, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers than those who focused only on the recipient. To find out how that approach went down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes for a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt more connected than those who received purely recipientfocused gifts. This proved balanced giftgiving builds stronger relationships. Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying(潜在的) goal of a gift—and surely it should be—then we may well be advised to offer more selfexpressive gifts.” In short, for a present to be truly meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not fully meet the recipient's practical needs or tastes. But a note of warning here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, thoughtless givercentred giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal selfishness”—and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves. ( ) 1. What is learned from the Mother's Day card test? A. Many pick gifts with the recipient in mind. B. Many choose gifts based on their own tastes. C. Gifts considering the giver benefit the giver. D. Gifts revealing the recipient affect the giver. ( ) 2. Why should we give gifts according to the text? A. To make the giver's life happier. B. To meet the recipient's practical needs. C. To show knowledge of the recipient. D. To establish stronger social connections. ( ) 3. How do the researchers view selfexpression in giftgiving? A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Critical. D. Uncaring. ( ) 4. What's the purpose of the text? A. To suggest better ways of gift giving. B. To show how gifts build relationships. C. To stress the importance of gift knowledge. D. To discuss common giftbuying mistakes. 一、 1. poets 2. crowds 3. company 4. thorough 5. wellmeaning 6. indeed 7. moments 8. joy 9. comfort 10. reflection 二、 1. comforted 2.
