【语篇出处】The People's Friend6 September,,2025
Possible version:
The day of the new school was especially unbearable.Colette distracted all my friends. My brandnew guinea-pig pencil case felt
heavy and useless in my hand without any appeal for them. The wall, which should have been lined with familiar faces waiting for
me,was empty now.The usual chorus of "Kellie!"and"Look at her new bag!"gave way to excitement centered around Colette.
During the lunch time, the people I used to have dinner with disappeared from sight completely and nobody came sniffing round my
lunchbox to see what treats I had bought. On the first day of the new school,I was alone, chewing my dinner by myself. In contrast,
Colette was surrounded by people, chatting and bursting into laughter from time to time.My title as Queen Bee seemed to have
disappeared overnight, and I spent the entire morning feeling invisible.
However, with time going by,I was also attracted by Colette. It wasn't just the racing bike.It was the effortless way she smiled
at everyone, making even the shyest kids feel included. Her humor often made me laugh my head off, bringing a lot of fun and
variety to my sehool life. One afternoon, when I was struggling to open a stubborn glue stick, she simply appeared beside me,
chatting away in her soft accent and offering a helping hand. Her kindness wasn't a performance for popularity;it was genuine.
Gradually,I realized that while I had been busy collecting admirers with my new things,Colette was collecting friends with her
warmth and good qualities.I began to understand that being"Queen Bee"wasn't about having the best pencils or the loudest fans-it
was about making others feel seen, something Colette did naturally, and something I now wanted to learn.

"You don't notice the seeds in a blackberry until you've tried a seedless one,"says Tom Adams, the
boss of Pairwise,a biotech company in North Carolina that is working on the first type of such a fruit.
Gene-edited(基因编辑的)blackberries are not technically without seeds.Rather,.as with seedless grapes,.
those seeds are so small and soft as to be unnoticeable.Late last year Pairwise announced a joint project
with a fruit-breeding company to develop stoneless cherries, following the success of seedless grapes,
watermelons and easy-peel mandarins. It is only a matter of time until more challenging fruits are similarly
eviscerated.
Over thousands of years of planting, humans have bred (fruit to their liking.Today's peaches
are 16 times the size of their ancient ancestors. The 1,200 varieties of watermelon are hardly similar to
the pale and seed-filled ones of the past, and also tend to be sweeter.
As Pairwise's blackberries show, advances in gene editing are allowing fruits to be changed in new
ways.CRISPR,the most popular such technique at the moment, and the one employed by Pairwise,
permits the removal of single genes.which enables changes that would be hard to achieve through
traditional breeding. Moreover, unlike existing genetically engineered crops, those made using CRISPR
do not require DNA from a foreign organism to be introduced-a practice that puts customers off.
Artificial intelligence is helping scientists design fruit more efficiently. The predictive power of
computational modelling and machine learning allows them to discover more quickly how multiple genes
and biochemical pathways,as well as environmental factors, will come together to produce moretcomplex
qualities, such as the chemicals that generate different tastes and change their appearance. For instance,
Green Venus,a Californian firm,is using CRISPR to develop non-browning avocados (by
stopping an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase.
Clearer regulation will help even more.m zof6 Argentina was the first country to rule that gene-
edited products should be regulated in the same manner as traditionally bred ones. The European Union's
Parliament and Council reached a temporary deal in December to simplify the process for marketing
plants bred through new gene editing techniques, such as by removing the need to label them any
differently from traditional ones, which seems an appropriately fruitful approach.
28.What does the underlined word"eviscerated"in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Changed in taste.
B.Removed their seeds.
C.Grown in a different way.
D.Produced in large numbers.
29.In what way does CRISPR differ from earlier techniques?
A.It highly updates traditional breeding.
B.It always puts customers'demands first.
C.It removes several genes to change fruits.
D.It avoids the introduction of foreign DNA.

Scientists have developed a pioneering 3D-printed device that could speed up patient access to new
medicines and remove the need for animal testing.Thousands of animals are used in the early stages of
developing medicines every year, yet many drugs tested on animals do not end up showing any clinical
benefit.
Now researchers at the University of Edinburgh have designed a "body on-chip"that perfectly
imitates (medicine flows through a patient's body. The plastic device (means scientists can
test drugs to see how different organs react without the need for live animal testing.Made using a 3D
printer, the chip's five compartments (copy the human heart, lungs, kidney, liver and brain. They
are connected by channels that imitate the human circulatory (system, through which new drugs
can be pumped.
The plastic device uses positron emission tomography(PET)scanning to produce detailed 3D images
showing what is going on inside the tiny organs."The PET imagery is what allows us to ensure the flow
of new drugs being tested is even,"said Liam Carr,.the inventor of the device.PET scanning involves
putting tiny amounts of radioactive compounds (into the chip to send signals to an extremely
sensitive camera, allowing scientists to better assess the effect of new drugs.
Carr said:"The platform is completely flexible and can be a valuable tool to investigate various
human diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and immune
diseases.Because of this flexibility, the uses are limited only by the availability of these cell models, and
the scientific questions we can think of.For example,we could have a fatty liver disease model in the
device and use this to see how having a diseased liver affects other organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys,
etc.,and could even combine multiple diseased cell models to see how diseases can interact with each
other.”
Carr's supervisor,Dr Adriana Tavares,of Edinburgh's center for cardiovascular science,said linking
five organs together on one device would help scientists effectively study how a new drug might affect a
patient's whole body."This device shows really strong potential to reduce the large number of animals
that are used worldwide for testing drugs."she added.

34.What can be inferred according to Carr?
A.The device has wide applications.
B.The device is limited by its flexibility.
C.The device leads to scientific questions
D.The device affects the interaction of organs.
35.Which of the following is the best suitable title?
A.Body On-Chip:A Breakthrough In 3D Printing

The Revolution of Choosing Yourself
Do you trust yourself? It's not a question we often stop to ask ourselves.36 Too often,we
hand the driving wheel to other people's expectations or the pressure to do what's"rght"in the eyes of
others.Actually,it is self-trust that can help you make choices that are truly yours.
Self-trust isn't something you are often taught.3"In a world full of responsibilities and
pressure to be everything to everyone, tuning in (and choosing yourself can feel unfamiliar.
Self-trust grows through small daily actions that prove you can rely on yourselfespecially when giving
in to old habits would be easier. Here are practical steps to begin.
38Many people are used to putting others first, often at the cost of their own wellbeing or
desires, and ugnoring their own feelings.Learning to be kind to yourself means treating yourself with the
same kindness you give others. You can guide your choices by asking what your future self will not regret.
Also, you need courage to step out of the comfort zone and be patient with yourself. You've likely
poured your heart and energy into caring for others,so now it's about learning to keep showing up for
yourself.39 It's a process of tuning in,again and again,to that quiet voice inside.
第8页共12页
In sum,building self-trust isn't a destination.It's an ongoing relationship,one that requires patience,
sympathy and the courage to keep listening to your inner voice. Each time you show up for yourself,no
matter how small the action, you strengthen that trust.4
There's no perfect and quick way to do this.
B.Yet that trust shapes every choice we make.
C Instead,it needs to be established on your own.
D.Above all,learn to make choices from self-sympathy.
E No one can find a completely right way to achieve it.
B.Most of us tend to follow others'advice blindly in life
G Gradually, you will respect your own needs and gain lasting self-trust.

YES,I know everyone expects you to have a long face when it's time to go back to school after the
summer holidays-especially here in Scotland, where we go back earlier.
But not me.
"Kellie loves school,"I'd always heard Mum say to her friends. You could tell she was proud of me.
Because I was always so good,Mum would treat me to a new pencil case and things to put in it.I
actually liked getting my new things-shirts and sweaters, the socks, shoes and schoolbag.
People at school came to expect it of me to have new pencils and pens and markers and rubbers each
September.
The girls would gather round my desk and ask to see what I had.
This was why I enjoyed school so much,I suppose-because I was Queen Bee.Miss Popular.
I got a lift to school every morning when Mum was on her way to work.
The gates opened at nine. When I arrived there, they'd be,all my friends, sitting in a row on the wall,
waiting for me.
When I walked through the gates, they'd all jump up and come running.

Someone would want to carry my bag-last year it was a lovely dusky-pink bag with a guinea-pig.
And someone else would already be asking if they could sit beside me at lunch.
On my first day back, and especially as this was my last year at primary-which meant that
absolutely everyone else in the school would be looking up at me-I was expecting the usual reception.
But,when Mum dropped me off, there was no sign of my fans lining up on the wall.
In fact, they were nowhere to be seen.
For a moment,I wondered if Mum had got the wrong day.Had the classrooms perhaps opened early?
Still feeling optimistic,I made my way towards my new room and found everyone gathering round
a very cool racing bike with a very pretty girl standing by."It is Colette. She can speak French."Someone
said."She looks so cute."Another voice whispered in my ear.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the new school was especially unbearable.
However, with time going by,I was also attracted by Colette.
