Nephi Garcia, a dad and designer in the Philippines, had been putting his daughter in costumes since she was a baby. Fashion runs in the Garcia family. His great-grandfather was a master dressmaker in the early 20th century; his grandmother started making high-end wedding dresses in the 1940s; and his uncle designed stylish shoes that made him famous all over Asia. So it was natural that, as an 11-year-old boy, Garcia learned to sew (缝制).
Fast forward to 2014, when Garcia and his wife, Bethanie, took their kids on a trip to Disneyland. A longtime lover of Disney films, he decided to dress up his daughter as the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. While the family was visiting the park, passerby after passerby asked about the costume. Then Garcia opened an Instagram account, and started posting more Disney-inspired costumes he made for his daughter. Soon enough, he had over 781,000 Instagram followers, and requests for custom orders started coming in from cosplayer adults and parents of little ones.
This was all taking place at a time when the family wasn’t sure of their next move, as Garcia had lost his job. It was then that Bethanie suggested her husband take his passion for creating costumes to the next level. “As a dad of three, then, I had no other choice but to find a way forward. I thank my wife, who encouraged me to start making costumes when we had nothing to lose,” Garcia shared. He now brings many film characters to life and creates every costume by hand.
For now, the children love watching their dad do what he loves best, and most of them know how to use a sewing machine themselves. “As parents, let your kids explore what they love doing! Seeing you take pleasure in your work will encourage them far more than any books or school ever could,” said Garcia. “Like my wife always says, ‘bring magic wherever you are!’”
4. What is mentioned about Nephi Garcia?
A. He is skilled at making traditional clothes.
B. He trained his daughter to become a model.
C. He showed an artistic talent at an early age.
D. He has a strong family design background.
5. What did Garcia’s Disney-style costumes receive?
A. Industry awards. B. Public admiration.
C. Community service. D. Cultural recognition.
6. Why did Garcia consider costume design as a job?
A. To avoid boredom. B. To support his family.
C. To build wide influence. D. To protect his family business.
7. What is Garcia’s advice for other parents?
A. Aid kids in developing confidence.
B. Teach kids the importance of exercise.
C. Show kids the value of following interests.
D. Encourage kids to set proper learning goals.
D 5. B 6. B 7. C

根据第一段中“Fashion runs in the Garcia family. His great-grandfather was a master dressmaker in the early 20th century; his grandmother started making high-end wedding dresses in the 1940s; and his uncle designed stylish shoes that made him famous all over Asia. So it was natural that, as an 11-year-old boy, Garcia learned to sew (缝制).(时尚融入了Garcia家族的血脉。他的曾祖父是20世纪初一位制衣大师;他的祖母在20世纪40年代开始制作高端婚纱;他的叔父设计的时尚鞋子让他闻名全亚洲。因此,Garcia在11岁时学习缝纫,也就是顺理成章的事了)”可知,Garcia有深厚的家庭设计背景。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“While the family was visiting the park, passerby after passerby asked about the costume. Then Garcia opened an Instagram account, and started posting more Disney-inspired costumes he made for his daughter. 【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This was all taking place at a time when the family wasn’t sure of their next move, as Garcia had lost his job. It was then that Bethanie suggested her husband take his passion for creating costumes to the next level. “As a dad of three, then, I had no other choice but to find a way forward....” (这一切都发生在Garcia失业、一家人不确定下一步该怎么走的时候。就在那时,Bethanie建议丈夫将他制作服装的热情提升到一个新的水平。“当时作为三个孩子的父亲,我别无选择,只能找到一条前进的道路。……”)”可知,Garcia考虑把服装设计作为一份工作是为了养家糊口。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Garcia的话“As parents, let your kids explore what they love doing! Seeing you take pleasure in your work will encourage them far more than any books or school ever could (作为父母,让你的孩子探索他们喜欢做的事情!看到你从工作中获得乐趣,会比任何书本或学校更能鼓励他们)”可知,Garcia对其他父母的建议是向孩子展示追随兴趣的价值。

Each year, more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced globally. The production of electronic devices (设备) uses a lot of energy and takes valuable natural resources. Meanwhile, devices are aging faster than ever — users replace their still-functional phones on average every 2 to 3 years. Although the most sustainable (可持续的) solution would be to change people’s behavior and consider more carefully whether their new model truly needs replacing, this is easier said than done.
Creativity often begins not with something new, but with a new way of thinking about the old. According to a research team, old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers, which have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in city environments like bus stops to track the number of passengers in real time, while guarding personal information. This would provide valuable decision-making guidance for city officials to improve public transportation networks.
In another project, the researchers took out the phones’ batteries and replaced them with outside power sources. Then, they put four phones together, added 3D-printed covers and holders, and made a working model. The model was then tested underwater, where it surveilled sea life. Normally, these kinds of tasks require a swimmer to record video and bring it to the surface for researchers to review. But with the model, the whole process was done underwater without human help.
Different devices have different hardware (硬件) abilities and setups, which makes it hard to reuse electronic waste widely. To solve this, software systems that can work with different devices are needed, no matter their power or resources. These systems need to give each device the right amount of work based on its abilities so that no device slows down the process.
The team’s results show that outdated technology doesn’t have to end up as waste. With fresh and wonderful ideas, these devices can contribute to the development of more environmentally friendly digital solutions. “Sustainability is not just about protecting the future — it’s about reimagining the present, where yesterday’s devices become tomorrow’s opportunities,” said Ulrich Norbisrath, an Associate Professor of Software Engineering.
8. What problem about electronic devices is highlighted?
A. Resource waste. B. Repair difficulties. C. Slow performance. D. Costly advertising.
9. What is a possible application of old smartphones?
A. Checking passenger behavior at stops. B. Supporting safe crowd data collection.
C. Showing traffic conditions to passengers. D. Surveying passengers’ service satisfaction.
10. What does the underlined word “surveilled” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Easily saved. B. Clearly guided. C. Carefully avoided. D. Closely observed.
11. What matters to software systems for e-waste reuse?
A. Error-fixing ability. B. Large storage space.
C. Effective energy use. D. Adaptive task management.
A 9. B 10. D 11. D
根据第一段中“Each year, more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced globally. The production of electronic devices (设备) uses a lot of energy and takes valuable natural resources. Meanwhile, devices are aging faster than ever — users replace their still-functional phones on average every 2 to 3 years.( 每年,全球生产的智能手机超过 12 亿部。电子设备的生产消耗大量能源,并占用宝贵的自然资源。与此同时,设备老化速度比以往任何时候都快——用户平均每隔 2 到 3 年就会更换仍能正常使用的手机。)”可知,电子设备生产消耗大量能源和宝贵自然资源,同时用户平均每 2-3 年就更换仍能正常使用的手机,这直接导致了严重的资源浪费问题。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to a research team, old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers, which have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in city environments like bus stops to track the number of passengers in real time, while guarding personal information. This would provide valuable decision-making guidance for city officials to improve public transportation networks.( 据一个研究团队称,旧智能手机可以成功地改造成小型数据中心,具有广泛的应用。例如,它们可以在城市环境中(如公交车站)实时追踪乘客数量,同时保护个人信息。这将为城市官员提供有价值的决策指导,以改善公共交通网络。)”可知,旧智能手机可用于公交站实时追踪乘客数量,同时保护个人信息。这本质上是在保障数据安全的前提下进行人群数据收集,为城市交通决策提供依据。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Normally, these kinds of tasks require a swimmer to record video and bring it to the surface for researchers to review. But with the model, the whole process was done underwater without human help.( 通常情况下,这类任务需要一名潜水员录制视频并将其带到水面供研究人员查看。但使用该模型后,整个过程在水下即可完成,无需人工协助。)”可知,原文第三段对比了传统方式和旧手机模型的工作方式:传统方式需要潜水员录制视频并带回水面供研究人员查看,而旧手机模型可以在水下独立完成整个过程。由此可推断 “surveilled”意为“密切观察、监测”,和D选项Closely observed“.密切观察”符合语境。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Different devices have different hardware (硬件) abilities and setups, which makes it hard to reuse electronic waste widely. To solve this, software systems that can work with different devices are needed, no matter their power or resources. These systems need to give each device the right amount of work based on its abilities so that no device slows down the process.( 不同的设备具有不同的硬件能力和配置,这使得广泛重复利用电子废弃物变得困难。为了解决这个问题,需要能够与不同设备协同工作的软件系统,无论这些设备的功率或资源如何。这些系统需要根据每个设备的能力为其分配适当的任务量,以确保没有设备拖慢整个过程。)”可知,适配不同电子设备的软件系统需要“根据每个设备的能力分配合适的工作量,确保没有设备拖慢整个进程”。这正是自适应任务管理的核心要求。
D
Imagine a quiet evening after a long week. You face a choice: sink into the sofa for a mindless TV show, or deal with a challenging home project you’ve been avoiding. The couch seems far more attractive, yet you know completing the project would bring a deeper sense of pride. You are hardly alone. And this common trouble is a perfect example of the happiness paradox (悖论).
However, failing to push ourselves properly will cause us to miss many future benefits. But why would a harder task make us happier? The answer lies in the idea of “flow”. When we participate in an activity that perfectly tests our skills — neither too hard nor too easy, we enter a state of deep focus and enjoyment. This feeling of being “in the zone (区域)” is a powerful source of happiness that low-effort fun hardly provides.
Research actually supports this. In one experiment, participants played either a skill-based game called 2048 or a luck-based game called Plinko. Those who played 2048, which required planned thinking, reported significantly higher levels of satisfaction and a greater sense of meaning than those who played the simpler game.
However, there’s a hidden issue: a high-skill activity is only enjoyable if we have some level of experience. For a complete beginner, the same task can be discouraging, not fun. This explains why we often shy away from challenges — the beginning effort can feel uninviting and bring no sense of achievement.
So how can we deal with and overcome the happiness paradox? The key is to turn a fearful project into manageable steps, making challenging tasks more reachable. Then reward (奖励) yourself for completing each milestone. Besides, try to focus on the long-term feeling of achievement you will gain. By doing so, you can pull yourself away from the couch and spend your time on activities that not only bring joy but also help you develop your abilities.
12. What is the “happiness paradox” mainly about?
A. Failing to balance duties with rest. B. Feeling too stressed to think wisely.
C. Wasting time because of poor planning. D. Choosing easy comfort over true satisfaction.
13. What condition allows people to experience “flow”?
A. Relaxed play with little effort.
B. A challenge matching one’s ability.
C. The pressure to achieve personal goals.
D. Familiar work from long-term practice.
14. What plays a role in the enjoyment of skilled games?
A. The length of play. B. The strictness of the rules.
C. The skill level of the player. D. The teamwork among participants.
15. Which is a suggested way to manage the happiness paradox?
A. Focus on smaller tasks at first.
B. Match work methods with interests.
C. Share progress to get encouragement.
D. Put more time into building basic skills.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

And this common trouble is a perfect example of the happiness paradox
根据第二段中“When we participate in an activity that perfectly tests our skills — neither too hard nor too easy, we enter a state of deep focus and enjoyment.(当我们参与一项完美测试我们技能的活动——既不太难也不太简单时,我们会进入一种深度专注和享受的状态)”可知,“心流”状态需要挑战与能力相匹配。
根据第四段中“However, there’s a hidden issue: a high-skill activity is only enjoyable if we have some level of experience. For a complete beginner, the same task can be discouraging, not fun.(然而,有一个隐藏的问题:只有当我们有一定程度的经验时,高技能活动才是令人愉快的。对于一个完全的初学者来说,同样的任务可能会令人沮丧,而不是有趣)”可知,玩家的技能水平在享受高技能游戏中起着重要作用。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Actions speak louder than words,” Mom always told me. This simple yet meaningful piece of advice constantly echoed (回响) in my ears, and for a long time, I did not truly understand its meaning until I took part in an important exam.
Before that, I would always brag (吹嘘) to her that I would become a world-famous doctor, but she always said the same thing which annoyed me.
In the classroom, I often showed off my intelligence at every opportunity. I looked down on my classmates, believing I was much smarter than them. When we gathered in study groups, I would often interrupt (打断) others, pushing my ideas without a second thought and ignoring theirs. Every student in my class had come to expect nothing but full marks from me.
Weeks before the examination, I tapped my partner and said proudly, “I’m going to top the class again!” She just rolled her eyes and continued taking notes. “What’s the point of taking notes if you have a brain like mine?” I bragged as I wrote aimlessly on my worksheets.
The day of the examination arrived. I easily went through the questions. Yes! First to finish again! I sat at my table and began to daydream. Every other student was still busy doing the paper or struggling with their brain.
Two weeks later, we received our papers. I was shocked. Not only did I not get full marks, but I failed terribly. I was very embarrassed. “Charlotte! How many marks did you get?” my classmates asked. My face went red and I hid my paper behind my back. They snickered (窃笑) . It turned out that my partner had seen my score and told the whole class.
Ashamed, I left the classroom and headed to the toilet to cry. If Mom knew about my score, how disappointed she would be!
After school, on the way home, I imagined Mom’s reaction.

After school, on the way home, I imagined Mom’s reaction. I could picture her disappointment, and it filled me with guilt. I had bragged to her I would become a world-famous doctor, yet here I was, a student who had failed to meet even my own expectations. When I got home, I could barely look Mom in the eye as I shared what had happened. “Now, do you understand what actions speak louder than words’ means?” Mom asked, her tone gentle yet firm. I nodded, unable to find the words to respond.
Inspired by Mom’s words, I was determined to change my behavior. I stopped bragging and became modest. I started to listen to my classmates during study groups. Instead of interrupting, I encouraged others to share their ideas. I also began to take my studies seriously, setting aside time to review my notes and prepare for exams. I even offered to help my classmates and built strong friendships. I learned that actions truly speak louder than words, and it was time for me to prove it.
