At 18, British writer Lara Prior-Palmer chose an extraordinary path: the Mongol Deroy, an extremely challenging 1,000-kilometer horse race across Mongolia’s wilderness.
In her first book, Rough Magic, Prior-Palmer describes her ride in all its pain, boredom, and ultimate success. “Somehow,” she writes at the beginning, “against all the odds, I won a race labeled the longest and toughest in the world and became the youngest person, and first female, ever to have done so.” Yet her story avoids overused phrases of self-praise, balancing vivid landscapes with honest words about painful saddle (马鞍) wounds and bad-smelling outdoor toilets, making it an unusual pleasure to read.
For much of the book, she and her horses — 25 in all, a new horse every 40 km — drag slowly with great effort across a landscape that resists Prior-Palmer’s sight. She’s especially gifted with metaphor (隐喻) — when it rains, “there appears a smooth path behind us, as though the earth is water and we have been fish, until now,” and the clouds are “piled high as if lining up for a funeral”. For every gorgeous metaphor, there’s a pair of wet riding trousers or a toilet that’s only “a smelly hole in the ground with wet boards above to stop you from slipping into it.”
By the end of Rough Magic, Prior-Palmer is amazed by the land around her. “Living in desertion,” she writes, “the land knows what I don’t: no one can carve a story into earth or sky. The wind sweeps the clouds away, the stage clears for another day.” She keeps competing, while trying to persuade herself to be more patient, and humbler. Her final hope is not to win the race — though she wants that, too — but to let the race make her free.
Rough Magic seems to stand as proof that she succeeded. And as I read it from the skyless comfort of my couch, I briefly felt a bit freer, too.

As a psychotherapist, I frequently encounter patients requesting antidepressants (抗抑郁药) for minor issues — panic over a pimple (丘疹), a few gloomy winter days or ordinary stress. Such cases reveal a troubling cultural shift: everyday struggles are increasingly treated as medical crises.
That’s why Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s recent comments about antidepressants struck such a nerve. Whatever one thinks of Kennedy, he surfaced a truth many Americans feel but rarely admit: millions rely on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and millions more wonder if they should. He was right to question the status quo. Where he went wrong was in making the drugs the devil. The deeper problem is a culture that unconsciously medicates instead of teaching people how to cope.
This overuse on pills didn’t happen by accident. Since the 1990s, drugs like Prozac have been marketed not just as treatments for severe depression, but as enhancer for general well-being. That message, amplified by social media and reinforced by a hurried health care system, has left many Americans convinced that discomfort itself is pathological
The damage is not only medical but profoundly cultural. We are redefining difficult emotions — sadness, anger, fear, frustration — not as signals to be understood, but as disorders to be erased. This pathologizing of normal human experience discourages the development of resilience. Its most serious consequence is visible among the young: growing up in a culture that mislabels hardship as trauma (创伤), they may become a generation less equipped to handle the ordinary difficulties of adulthood.
The solution is not to reject antidepressants — they save lives in severe cases — but to restore balance. SSRIs should be reserved for clear clinical need. Make therapy a place of growth. And teach people that painful feelings are not dangerous but can be the raw material of resilience. Only by facing sadness, not making it, can we build a healthier, more resilient society.

A.having a medical surgery.

A.A lack of effective alternative treatments.

A.critical B.concerned C.optimistic D.sympathetic

C.Beyond the Pill: Rebalancing Medication and Resilience in Mental Health.

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition (认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate (旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
9. In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?
A. Building confidence. B. Developing spatial skills.
C. Learning self-control. D. Gaining high-tech knowledge.
10. What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?
A. Parents’ age. B. Children’s imagination.
C. Parents’ education. D. Child-parent relationship.
11. How do boy differ from girls in puzzle play?
A. They play with puzzles more often.
B. They tend to talk less during the game.
C. They prefer to use more spatial language.
D. They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. A mathematical method. B. A scientific study.
C. A woman psychologist D. A teaching program.
Music influences your emotions. In turn, your emotions influence your behavior. One of these is your food intake. 13 What does science say about this subject?
Researchers at the University of Arkansas studied how music influences people when they eat in a restaurant. For the study, they used four types of music: jazz, classical, rock, and hip-hop. Their results showed that people had more appetite when they listened to jazz music while they ate. 14 This has a lot to do with emotions. For instance, when you listen to music with harmonic rhythms like jazz, you feel happier. This increases your appetite.
However, another study published in Psychological Reports suggests it isn’t only increased appetite that causes people to eat more. 15 A more stimuli-filled environment makes you eat more. In fact, they tend to urge you on to eat and even “encourage” you to eat faster. On the other hand, if the atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed, you’re likely to feel more relaxed and spend more time enjoying yourself. For this reason, you’ll tend to eat less.
Besides, the study conducted by the Journal of the Academy suggests that the volume of music can also have an effect on how you eat. More specifically, the study states that, with low-volume music, you eat better because you make healthier choices. On the other hand, the study claims that music at high volume increases stimulation and stress. 16
For this reason, restaurants should consider the fact when thinking about the optimization of their products and services. 17 They equip themselves with the technology needed to provide memorable experiences through music, greatly strengthening their relationship with the customer.
A.Does music influence how you eat?
B.Being in a rush to eat also plays a part.
C.Does your emotion boost your appetite?
D.However, they had less appetite when listening to hip-hop.
E.In fact, many catering establishments have already taken action.
F.This could prove to be quite an interesting concept for restaurants.
G.This means you’re more likely to order comfort food or other unhealthy options.

根据第二段“Yet her story avoids overused phrases of self-praise, balancing vivid landscapes with honest words about painful saddle (马鞍) wounds and bad-smelling outdoor toilets, making it an unusual pleasure to read.(然而,她的故事避免了过度的自我赞美,在生动的风景和对痛苦的马蹄伤和难闻的户外厕所的诚实描述之间取得了平衡,使其成为一种不同寻常的阅读乐趣)”可知,《Rough Magic》的语言风格是描述性的。故选C项。
根据倒数第二段“By the end of Rough Magic, Prior-Palmer is amazed by the land around her. “Living in desertion,” she writes, “the land knows what I don’t: no one can carve a story into earth or sky. The wind sweeps the clouds away, the stage clears for another day.”(在《Rough Magic》的尾声,Prior-Palmer被周遭的天地所震撼。

根据第二段中的“The deeper problem is a culture that unconsciously medicates instead of teaching people how to cope.(更深层次的问题在于,存在一种无意识地‘medicate’而非教人们如何应对的文化。)”及第一段“As a psychotherapist, I frequently encounter patients requesting antidepressants (抗抑郁药) for minor issues — panic over a pimple (丘疹), a few gloomy winter days or ordinary stress. Such cases reveal a troubling cultural shift: everyday struggles are increasingly treated as medical crises.(作为一名心理治疗师,我经常遇到患者因一些小事就要求开具抗抑郁药——比如为一颗丘疹感到恐慌、经历几天阴郁的冬日,或是面对普通的压力。这类情况揭示了一个令人担忧的文化转变:日常困境正越来越多地被当作医疗危机来处理。)”可知,抗抑郁药被用于轻微问题(如粉刺焦虑、冬日低落等情绪问题),由此可知,“medicate”指用药物而非直接应对来回避情绪问题。结合选项,“using medicine to avoid emotional problems.(用药物来回避情绪问题)”符合语境。故选D项。
根据第三段中的“Since the 1990s, drugs like Prozac have been marketed not just as treatments for severe depression, but as enhancer for general well-being. That message, amplified by social media and reinforced by a hurried health care system, has left many Americans convinced that discomfort itself is pathological (病理学的).(自20世纪90年代以来,百忧解等药物的宣传定位不仅是治疗重度抑郁症,还被当作提升整体幸福感的“增强剂”。这一信息经社交媒体放大,又因节奏匆忙的医疗体系得以强化,让许多美国人坚信“不适本身就是病态的”。)”可知,抗抑郁药过度使用的主要原因是广泛的广告宣传和压力大的医疗体系。故选D项。
7.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Its most serious consequence is visible among the young: growing up in a culture that mislabels hardship as trauma (创伤), they may become a generation less equipped to handle the ordinary difficulties of adulthood.(其最严重的后果在年轻人中显现:在一个将困难误判为创伤的文化中成长,他们可能会成为一代应对成年日常困境能力较弱的人。)”

38.have been developed 39.with 40.how 41.to serve 42.respectively
解析:空格前为 “a national Go championship..., a Shanghai amateur fencing open...”,空格后为 “a youth jump rope competition”,三者是并列的赛事举例,需用 “and” 连接最后一个并列成分,故填 “and”。
解析:先行词为 “a youth jump rope competition”,从句 “talented students demonstrated their athletic abilities” 中缺少地点状语(“在比赛中” 学生展示能力),故用关系副词 “where” 引导定语从句,填 “where”。
解析:时间状语“since its launch”(自启动以来)提示用现在完成时;主语“more than 200 experiential activities”与“develop”是被动关系(活动“被开发”),故用现在完成时的被动语态,填“have been developed”。
解析:固定短语“team up with”表示“与……合作”,空格后为合作对象“100 local restaurants”,故填“with”。
40.how 考查点:宾语从句引导词。解析:动词“demonstrates”后接宾语从句,从句意为“增强现实技术如何改变体育体验”,缺少方式状语,故用“how”引导,填“how”。
41.to serve 非谓语动词(不定式作目的状语)。解析:“operating daily from 7:00 am until 2:00 am”的目的是“适配不同的时间安排”,不定式表目的,故填“to serve”。
