I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed (叹气) dramatically. “Can’t you just use your phone?” he asked. Suddenly it occurred to me that he did not even know how to use a dictionary. I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him. It took him a few tries to find the word in question. While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: “How can there be this many words?” After a while, he looked at me and asked, “Do you know all these words, Mom?” I smiled. “I definitely do not know all these words,” I said. “But that’s why this is one of my favorite books.” I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday. I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress. I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase. Kevin wanted to see the dictionary. I felt a small pain in my chest. The dictionary was stolen at the end of my freshman year of college. “That’s so sad,” he said, “but you still know all those words, even without the book.” I realized that this was true. I still made it through the next three years of college, even without the book. And it wasn’t, ultimately, the dictionary that got me there — not really. Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. It’s not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite. 4. What does Kevin usually do to get the meaning of a word? A. Use electronic devices. B. Consult a paper dictionary. C. Guess from the context. D. Turn to his English teacher. 5. How did Kevin feel while looking up the word in the dictionary? A. Annoyed. B. Disappointed. C. Encouraged. D. Astonished. 6. What can we learn about the author’s first dictionary? A. It helped her through college. B. It was given to Kevin as a gift. C. It bore witness to her efforts. D. It was a valuable limited edition. 7. What has the author come to realize about learning? A. It is never too late to start. B. Motivation is what really matters. C. Children need role models. D. Dictionaries are still a useful tool. A 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel. “Look it up,” I responded. “But my screen time is off,” he said. I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed (叹气) dramatically. “Can’t you just use your phone?” he asked. (不久前,我上五年级的儿子Kevin问我一本小说里某个词的意思。“查字典,”我回答。“但是我的屏幕使用时间已经用完了,”他说。我刻意地看向放着至少三本字典的书架,Kevin夸张地叹了口气。“你就不能用你的手机查吗?”他问道。)”可知,作者提示Kevin用纸质词典查单词,但他想用手机,说明Kevin通常使用电子设备来获取单词的意思。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him. It took him a few tries to find the word in question. While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: “How can there be this many words?” (我取下一本字典,我们一起读了几分钟,然后我把它递给了他。他试了好几次才找到那个词。在翻阅书页时,他睁大眼睛不停地说:“怎么会有这么多单词?”)”可知,Kevin查字典才发现有那么多单词,他感到很惊讶。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday. I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress. I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase. (我的第一本字典是我13岁生日时的礼物。我决定要尽可能多地学习单词,并开始用铅笔在我查过的每个词条旁做标记来衡量自己的进步。我持续做这些铅笔标记多年,上大学时,我把那本字典装进了行李箱)”可知,作者的第一本字典见证了她进入大学之前的整个努力过程。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. It’s not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite. (现在我明白了,虽然我的儿子可能以不同的方式学习,但他仍在学习。重要的不是单词本身或我们如何学习它们,而是想知道它们的欲望、好奇心和求知欲)”可知,作者意识到学习的真正关键在于动机和好奇心。 C While the rest of the country’s schools were struggling with math, student performance in Piedmont, a rural Alabama school district, improved obviously. Piedmont, a 1,100-student district where seven out of 10 come from poor families, changed its teaching method five years ago: Teachers used test scores to see where their students were struggling and then they tried to help each kid focus on specific skills. “Once we made that decision and allowed our teachers time to dig into the data, it paid off,” said Mike Hayes, the head teacher. Piedmont students ranked (排名) 35th in the state in math in 2017. By spring 2022, the district ranked 12th in the state on math, with 57% of students reaching proficiency (娴熟). Statewide, 30% of students scored proficient in math. To encourage teachers to dig deeper into student data, the Piedmont system made the school day longer and freed up time every four weeks for “data days”, when educators got together to study the testing results and decide how to divide the students into small groups for focused instruction. “Research supports the use of tests to help teachers figure out which students need personalized help,” said Rebecca Dreyfus, an expert helping schools improve student learning. “Focused instruction for small groups of students also has years of research and evidence to back it up.” At first, when Piedmont decided to introduce the small group instruction, teachers said they didn’t have enough time in a regular class to do it well. So the district lengthened math classes to 80 minutes every day in the middle school and 120 minutes each day in the elementary school. “The longer math classes made a big difference,” teacher Landon Pruitt said. “In a 45-minute class, it is impossible to teach in small groups and get through the contents that we are required to cover.” 8. Why are the data used in paragraph 4? A. To describe a phenomenon in the US. B. To show the effect of the teaching method. C. To tell the students’ family background. D. To explain the state-wide math performances. 9. What does the testing aim to do in Piedmont? A. Get money from students. B. Force teachers to work harder. C. Choose the best students. D. Guide personalized instructions. 10. What does Rebecca Dreyfus suggest about the tests? A. They are waste of time. B. They need further research. C. They can be very helpful. D. They cost too much money. 11. What has made small group instructions possible in Piedmont? A. Lengthened class time. B. Smaller class size. C. Less teaching contents. D. Additional teachers. B 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第四段中“Piedmont students ranked (排名) 35th in the state in math in 2017. So the district lengthened math classes to 80 minutes every day in the middle school and 120 minutes each day in the elementary school. (起初,当皮德蒙特决定引入小组教学时,老师们表示,他们在常规课堂上没有足够的时间来做好这件事。因此,该学区将中学的数学课延长到每天80分钟,小学的数学课延长到每天120分钟。)”及最后一段““The longer math classes made a big difference,” teacher Landon Pruitt said. “In a 45-minute class, it is impossible to teach in small groups and get through the contents that we are required to cover.” (“更长的数学课带来了很大的不同,”教师Landon Pruitt说,“在45分钟的课堂上,根本不可能进行小组教学,同时又完成我们需要讲授的全部内容。”)”可知,延长的上课时间使皮德蒙特的小组教学成为可能。故选A。 D Coolness is not a widely studied subject. Past research has found that coolness is usually considered something positive: Cool people enjoy taking risks and doing extreme things and they are usually fashionable and attractive. But Dr. Warren and his team want to know what makes a person “good” rather than just “cool”. So they asked the participants in an experiment to think about the people they considered good or cool. Then they were asked to match each person with 15 different qualities. “We found that the good and cool people do share some qualities. For example, those who appear agreeable are equally considered cool and good,” Dr. Warren said. “But, across the board, the qualities that are usually related to kindness or helpfulness are more often associated with good people instead of cool ones. Compared with cool ones, good people seem to be warmer, more helpful and traditional. They usually work harder and see everyone and everything as being equal or equally worthy of care and respect.” Their finding further suggests that the drive to be cool is particularly strong during teenage, and it influences not only what people buy or whom they admire but also how they talk and what they do for fun. So is coolness a quality that’s worth dreaming of? “I have serious doubts,” Dr. Warren said. “Sure, cool kids get more attention in school, but many of them who continue behaving in this way in adulthood would struggle. For example, they are very likely to develop problems with drugs and relationships. Though coolness may offer popularity during youth, it is how good you are that contributes to long-term success. Even the most uncool kid will probably do well if they have at least some close friends.” 12. Which quality is more often related to cool people according to the text? A. Respectfulness. B. Helpfulness. C. Adventurousness. D. Agreeableness. 13. Who are most likely to try to appear cool? A. Babies. B. Teenagers. C. Young adults. D. The elderly. 14. What is Dr. Warren’s attitude to cool adults? A. Unfavorable. B. Appreciative. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear. 15. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Possible problems for cool kids. B. Advantages of being a good person. C. Shared qualities of good and cool people. D. Differences between cool and good persons. 12. C 13. B 14. A 15. Even the most uncool kid will probably do well if they have at least some close friends.”(沃伦博士说:“我对此表示严重怀疑。 故选A。 根据第三段中““We found that the good and cool people do share some qualities. They usually work harder and see everyone and everything as being equal or equally worthy of care and respect.”(沃伦博士说:“我们发现,善良和冷静的人确实有一些共同的品质。 According to a survey, about a third of adults reported that they sometimes struggled to make basic decisions. Ladies and gentlemen, I firmly believe that real-life friendship is superior to online friendship. My reasons are as follows. First, real-life interactions provide genuine emotional connection through face-to-face communication, body language, and shared experiences, which online chats often lack. Second, offline friends offer immediate and practical support during both joys and hardships, something online friends cannot always provide due to physical distance. Most importantly, building trust and understanding deepens naturally through consistent real-world contact over time. Therefore, while online friendships have benefits, the depth, reliability, and richness of real-life friendship make it irreplaceably better. 要求考生作为辩论代表写一篇发言稿参加班级将举行的英语辩论赛,主题为“Online Friendship VS Real-Life Friendship, Which Is Better?”。 词汇积累 快乐:joy → happiness 由于:due to → because of 联系:contact → connection 好处:benefit → advantage 2. I firmly believe that real-life friendship is superior to online friendship. I firmly hold the belief that real-life friendship is superior to online friendship. 1】I firmly believe that real-life friendship is superior to online friendship.(运用了that引导宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Therefore, while online friendships have benefits, the depth, reliability, and richness of real-life friendship make it irreplaceably better.(运用了while引导的让步状语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. As the family watched their favorite TV show together, they heard Mark’s dad’s trademark cough. Every time he heard that sound, Mark’s heart felt heavy. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to focus on the show, but his mind continued to drift to thoughts of all the damage his dad was doing to his lungs by smoking. Mark just didn’t understand. His dad was a great dad — he spent a lot of his spare time with him playing outside and watching TV. Plus, he was really smart, so why would he be so stupid as to risk his health by smoking so much? What if it caused a serious disease? Had he ever considered how heartbroken it would make him and his mom? Mark’s mind wandered back to a conversation he had overheard between his parents. His mom had been pleading (恳求) with his dad, her voice full of worry. “You need to think about your health, for Mark’s sake if not for your own,” she had said. But his dad just brushed her off, saying he was too stressed to quit. One evening, Mark approached his mom to discuss the issue. “I’ve tried to persuade him to quit,” Mark’s mom expressed with a sigh. “But he always gets annoyed whenever I bring up the subject.” She looked tired and defeated. “At least your dad is considerate with his smoking; he never does it indoors or around others. He even changes his clothes when coming home to prevent us from smelling the smoke. Despite that, it’s still so hard on him, on us…” The next day at school, Mark was playing basketball with his classmate Tim on the court. “Hey, does either of your parents smoke?” he asked. “Yeah, my dad smokes, but he’s cut down in the past year,” replied Tim. “Oh, how did he do that?” Mark asked curiously. “I don’t really know what happened. I guess he just realized it was time for a change,” said Tim, as he threw the ball back to Mark. This gave Mark a ray of hope and an idea. Mark decided to take action, hoping to encourage his dad to change. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day, Mark found a reply from his dad on his bed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mark decided to take action, hoping to encourage his dad to change. He sat down at his desk and began to write a heartfelt letter to his dad. In the letter, he expressed his love and concern for his dad’s health, describing how worried he and his mom were about the potential consequences of smoking. He also shared his memories of the happy times they had spent together and how much he wanted his dad to be around for a long time. Finally, he gently suggested that his dad consider quitting smoking for his own good and for the sake of his family. The next day, Mark found a reply from his dad on his bed. His dad had written a note saying that he had read Mark’s letter carefully and was deeply touched by his son’s love and concern. He admitted that he had been aware of the risks of smoking but had been too weak to quit. However, Mark’s letter had given him the strength and motivation he needed. He promised Mark that he would try his best to quit smoking and would seek help if necessary. Mark was overjoyed to read his dad’s reply and felt a sense of relief wash over him. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①表达:express/convey/voice ②建议:suggest/propose ③承诺:promise/commit/pledge 情绪类 ①担忧:concern/worry/anxiety ②感动:touched/moved ③欣喜:overjoyed/delighted/ecstatic 【点睛】[高分句型1] In the letter, he expressed his love and concern for his dad’s health, describing how worried he and his mom were about the potential consequences of smoking. B Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel. “Look it up,” I responded. “But my screen time is off,” he said. I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed (叹气) dramatically. “Can’t you just use your phone?” he asked. C While the rest of the country’s schools were struggling with math, student performance in Piedmont, a rural Alabama school district, improved obviously. D Coolness is not a widely studied subject. According to a survey, about a third of adults reported that they sometimes struggled to make basic decisions. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
