教学过程
Step 1: Lead-in
Activity:
1. Show the image from the textbook.
Ask students: “What does the picture look like? What does it make you think of ?” .
Students might think of “love”, “caring”, “help”, “charity” and so on.
2. Present the unit title “Charities” and briefly introduce the 4 unit goals.
Design Intent:
To activate students’ prior knowledge of positive values (love, care), build an emotional connection to the theme of "charities," and naturally introduce the unit title and learning goals in a relatable, discussion-based way.
Step 2: Introduction to Charities Around the World
Activity:
1. Play a short video that introduces Doctors Without Borders. After watching, ask: “What charity is mentioned? ” “What is it also called?” “When was it set up?” “What is the most touching part of its work for you?”. Guide students to focus on key information when watching.
2. Introduce the logo of Doctors Without Borders and guide students to pay attention to charity logos and learn to obtain relevant information from them.
3. Present more charity logos. Teacher asks: “What can you see in the logo and what might the charity do?” Evaluate and supplement students’ answers to introduce the four main charities to be covered in this lesson.
Design Intent:
To use a video to quickly arouse students’ interest and introduce basic information about Doctors Without Borders. Logos help to lower the difficulty of learning new charity names, encourage students’ critical thinking (guessing functions), and systematically introduce core charities as the lesson’s focus.
Step 3: The work of a charity
Activity:
1. Play the textbook audio (Part A). Students complete the fill-in-the-blank table about each charity’s founding year and specific work (e.g., “Doctors Without Borders was set up in 1971; it sends doctors and nurses to help in emergencies”).
2. Students complete the fill-in-the-blank table while listening. Afterward, check answers as a class.
3. Students observe the four pictures in Part A, connect them with the knowledge they have just learned, and write down the corresponding charities under each picture.
Design Intent:
To help students organize information systematically (via tables), and reinforce understanding of charity facts (names + history + work) through auditory input.
Step 4: Dialogue Modeling
Activity:
1. Have the students listen to the dialogue between Amy and Simon to obtain relevant information about Operation Smile and go on completing the fill-in-the-blank table.
2. Based on the dialogue, students learn to talk about charity organizations using appropriate language. Direct students to the model dialogue structure on the PPT:
- A: Do you know any important charities?
- B: Yes. For example, I’ve heard of ... It was founded in ...
- A: So what do they do?
- B: ...
- A: That’s great!
- B: It is. Thanks to ..., many people ...
3. Students practice the dialogue in pairs, focusing on pronunciation and intonation. Invite 2-3 pairs to perform their dialogues in front of the class.
4. Have students talk about the biggest problem in their hometown and explain.
Design Intent:
To provide a clear linguistic model for talking about charities, improve students’ spoken fluency through guided repetition, and build confidence in using target structures.
Step 5: Reflection, Summary & Value Guidance
Activity:
1. Show the PPT slide with the sentence "Help and support can move mountains". Ask students: "How do you understand the sentence after learning about charities?"
2. End with a call to action: "Charities need everyone’s help. Even small actions make a big difference. Let’s care more about people and the world around us."
Design Intent:
To consolidate learning through reflection, connect the lesson to positive values (helping others), and end with a motivational message that deepens students’ understanding of charity’s importance.
Step 6: Homework
Activity:
1. Must-do: Search for more charities and talk about them with your friends.
2. Make a poster for the charity you would like to volunteer for to make more people interested in it.
Design Intent:
To encourage creativity (poster design), extend learning beyond the classroom, and allow students to engage with the theme based on their interests.
