I took a deep breath and forced myself to go up.My instructor's words reached something deep
inside me.I looked up instead, focusing on a small flat space just above my head.My fingers
tightened on the rope,and I pulled myself up.Every inch was a struggle,but I kept moving.The
wind brushed my face, the sky above grew wider, and little by little, fear gave way to determination.
With each step,I felt a part of my fear slip away.
Finally,I reached the top.I stood up slowly,breathing hard,and looked out.What I saw took
my breath away:endless hills rolling into the distance and sunlight dancing on tree tops.As I stood
there,I laughed out loud-half in disbelief,half in joy.When the team gathered for a photo,I
smiled heartily. That moment wasn't just about conquering the cliff. It was about conquering the fear
that had controlled me for years.I learned that the only way out of fear is through it.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to go up.Gripping the rock firmly,I focused only on
finding the next handhold."Trust the gear,"I repeated the instructor's words in my mind.Though
my palms were sweaty and my arms trembled,I continued moving upward.Surprisingly, with each
successful move,my confidence grew.In the meanwhile,my panic began to ease.I wasn't thinking
about the height anymore;I was thinking only about the next move, and then the next.
Finally,I reached the top.As I pulled myself over the edge,an incredible sense of victory
washed over me.I sat there, breathless and amazed, looking out at the world, which looked so
beautiful,not frightening.For the first time,height didn't mean fear-it meant freedom.At that

When was the last time you looked up and saw a clear sky full of stars? If you live in a big
city, the answer is probably:a long time ago.Streetlights, billboards and even the lights in our
houses block our view of the night sky.According to a study,60%of Europeans and almost
four-fifths of people in North America cannot see the Milky Way at night.(18)Bright lights also
affect animals, confusing them when they migrate. For example, sea turtles, which navigate by
the moon, often become disoriented due to artificial lights on beaches.(19)Birds that migrate at
night are also thrown off course by city lights. And this type of pollution is also disrupting human
sleep patterns.Luckily, there are solutions.First, cities can install streetlights that point downward
instead of spreading light in all directions.(20)Then,shops can turn off bright signs after midnight.
Last,we could follow the Czech Republic's example and introduce a law against light pollution

Roger Leon grew up the son of immigrants,a welfare receiver, and, perhaps most
importantly,a Newark kid with big dreams. Now,as the supervisor of the city's schools,he
leads a district filled with kids who grew up like him.In the district that is majority Latino,Leon
is the first ever Latino supervisor.
Leon's story started out like that of many Newark residents. He came to the city from Cuba
in the 1960s with his mother, who didn't speak English and had no family in the country while
caring for him and his three elder sisters.Government assistance supported Leon into his young
adult life, but his greatest hope lay in education.
"My mom taught us that education was the most important thing that we could receive and
achieve,"he says."It was always about having high expectations for ourselves."
After coming up through the Newark schools and receiving degrees at Rutgers and Montclair
State,Leon returned home.He taught fifth grade at Hawkins Street School and coached the
championship debate team at Science Park High School before teaching math at Rafael
Hernandez Elementary School. He then quickly rose as head of Dr.William H.Horton School
and University High School of Humanities, before serving as a school supervisor.
Under Leon's leadership, the board of education launched an ambitious 10-year strategic
plan.A greater focus on early childhood development and education, more teachers and reduced
habitual absence are the immediate goals, but the ultimate objective is to have graduates return
to Newark and contribute to the community.
The supervisor says he enjoys frequent communication with students and parents, calling his
quarterly meetings with them the most rewarding part of his job."They enable me to have a
quality-control check to assess to what degree we're actually doing what I'm saying we're doing,"
Leon says.

Could you survive a vacation without your mobile phone, resisting the strong desire to make
a call, post on social media or rely on the power of the all-mighty internet to get around in a
foreign country?
FTLO Travel For the Love of Travel),a company aimed at individual travelers,is
launching new trips. It offers people the opportunity to leave their electronic devices behind and
enjoy a more immersive experience by interacting with locals and adjusting to their new
surroundings.
"In today's digital age,we have become increasingly dependent on our smartphones, and it
is negatively impacting our mental well-being and our ability to be present.By removing this
distraction, travelers can be more present and fully engage with the destination they're visiting,"
FTLO Travel founder and CEO Tara Cappel says.
In a world where the screens in our pockets are daily becoming more of a distraction, digital
escapes are becoming increasingly attractive.Earlier this year,Ulko-Tammio in Finland declared
itself the world's first tourist island without any phones, urging visitors to instead immerse
themselves in the surrounding nature. Many other hotels or places to stay, like Rancho La Puerta
in Mexico, bill themselves as digital detox (destinations, where the focus is on relaxation
away from phones and computers.
According to Lamees Khorshid,a California-based psychologist, the boons of such travel
are endless."Not having notification sounds from a phone reduces elements of distraction and
allows for more relaxed attention in the here and now,"she says."Switching phones off switches
on the mind.”
高三英语ZT·第6页(共12页)
Cappel, who has done several trips of this kind herself, expects the tours will particularly
appeal to people who grew up in a world without smartphones and are longing for those bygone
simple days. She hopes that such trips will help people learn to have occasional disconnected
days as a structural part of their lives, during which they're more present in everyday things.
28.What do FTLO Travel's new trips aim to do?
A.Cut phone use in daily life.
B.Create a tech-free environment.
C.Teach travelers survival skills abroad.
D.Offer affordable vacations to young people.
29.Why does the author mention Ulko-Tammio?
A.To stress its leading role in tourism.
B.To show the rise of unplugged travel.
C.To promote Finland as a tourist destination.
D.To compare with Rancho La Puerta.
30.What does the underlined word "boons"in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Rules.
B.Skills.
C.Challenges.
D.Benefits.
31.Who are most likely to join FTLO Travel's new trips?
A.People seeking a return to a simple past.
B.Those less familiar with smartphones.
C.Individuals interested in traveling alone.
D.Tourists looking for extreme adventures.

On a sunny day, buildings absorb much of the sun's radiation and quickly heat up.Now,
researchers from the USA,China,Singapore and Sweden have succeeded in creating a variety of
advanced thin metamaterials which not only block solar radiation but also emit heat, hence
lowering the indoor temperature. One of the materials can be brushed as paint.
"A roof painted with the specially designed material maintained an indoor temperature 5.6
degrees lower than another building painted with conventional white paint,"says Max Yan,
Associate Professor at Umea University and co-author of the study published in Nature.
Metamaterials are artificially engineered materials with properties that are superior to those
found in natural materials.Developing cooling metamaterials has previously been a time-
consuming process where researchers had to rely on trial and error. The new method is based on
artificial intelligence (AI),which in just a few days can generate thousands of complex
structures with the desired properties of reflecting solar radiation and emitting thermal radiation
()The best candidates are then identified in terms of mass producibility and cost.
高三英语ZT·第7页(共12页)
The new paint can provide significant energy savings by reducing the need for air
conditioning.Calculations show that if the paint is applied to the roof of a typical four-storey
apartment building with a roof area of 780 square metres in Bangkok,it could save about 12,000
kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In addition to being used on buildings, the new paint can
be applied to other objects, such as cars, trains,or machines.
In the longer term, the technology might be used for adjusting the climate on a global scale.
"Will the massive application of this type of radiative cooling metamaterial help to slow down
global warming?I have not spent much time on this question, but I would say it is worth
investigating,"says Max Yan.In countries with cold winters, like Sweden, the AI approach can
be adapted to design thin materials or paint that can help preserve heat in buildings.
32.What does Max Yan's research focus on?
A.Comparing the effects of different paints.
B.Using AI to analyse building materials.
C.Upgrading the traditional white paint.
D.Designing materials to cool buildings.
33.What does the example of the apartment building in Bangkok illustrate?
A.The effectiveness of the new paint.
B.The demand for cooling in hot climates.
C.The primary market for the new product.
D.The urgent need to reduce electricity costs.
34.Why does the author mention Sweden in the last paragraph?
A.To credit a research partner in the study.
B.To propose a better solution to extreme weather.
C.To reveal the AI method's broader potential.
D.To highlight a major limitation of the AI-created paint.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.AI Enhances the Research of Paint
B.A New Cooling Paint Brings Changes
C.A New Solution to Global Warming
D.Metamaterials Beat Natural Materials

when it's time to make dinner, and that means I often spend a lot on groceries and even more on
going to restaurants every week.36
Cooking all my meals at home helped me save a significant amount of money over the one-
month period.Usually,I'd spend at least $200 a week on food (including groceries and eating
out),but during this challenge,I was only spending around $100 a week.37
During the experiment,my mom and younger sister visited for a weekend.38 We made
homemade pasta, and finished our meal with chocolate-covered and cheesecake-filled
strawberries.I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly our dishes came together and how fun it
was to make them with my family.
39 In a typical month,I eat nearly every breakfast and lunch at home, but dinners
easily got off track. So this month,I had to leamn to embrace leftovers when I was tired of
cooking. To keep myself from getting bored,I looked for ways to smarten them up.I found
certain leftover foods were easy to turn into something fresh by changing up my sides and sauces.
About halfway through the experiment,I noticed I started feeling better.I felt a lot more
energy toward the second half of the month, which I owed partially to the healthier meals
40 After a month of eating only home-cooked meals,I saved a lot of money, felt more
energized,and still enjoyed cooking.
A.Cooking at home really is cheaper.

Going Up
I was afraid of heights.I became anxious when I climbed stairs with gaps between them.It
felt as if I would fall through the spaces. Then, the fear spread to any set of staircases where I
could see up or down more than one floor.
高三英语ZT·第11页(共12页)》
My fear didn't stop there. When hiking,I had to stay as far as possible from the edges of
hills. In tall buildings, just going near the windows made my stomach drop.My fear of heights
greatly limited my life.
One night,I read something by Dale Carnegie that struck me hard:"Do the thing you fear
to do and keep on doing it...that is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer a
fear."I thought about it for days. Finally,I decided:I had to face it.I signed up for a
beginner's outdoor rock climbing course.
The preparation wasn't easy.I started jogging to build up my strength.I did strength training
three times a week.The more I worked out,the more confident I became-at least physically.
Mentally,I still wasn't sure.During training,I learned how to use climbing gear (and
practiced hard. The instructors kept telling us,"Trust the gear. It's stronger than you think."
Still,I wasn't sure I could trust myself.
Then came the day of the actual climb.Standing at the base of the cliff ()I looked
up.The wall seemed endless.I wanted to quit.My heart pounded.My hands were sweating.But
something inside whispered,"Just go one step at a time."
As I began climbing,I made a rule for myself:don't look down.I focused on the rock, one
handhold at a time, one foothold at a time. But the higher I went, the harder it became to
breathe.I could hear my own heartbeat in my ears.Halfway up,panic hit.My legs shook."I
can't go up,"I shouted.
Below,my instructor called out,"You can.You're safe.Look how far you've come."
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I took a deep breath and forced myself to go up.
Finally,I reached the top.
