Holly, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane at JFK airport in New York City, feeling excited about her plan to spend a year studying abroad in Nancy, a city in northeast France. Within a few weeks of staying in France, though, her excitement was gone. Living in a new country was much harder than she had expected it to be, especially when it came to speaking French. Her accent(口音) was terrible and people could hardly understand her.
英语 第3 页(共8页)
One day, Holly's mother called to tell her that the package she had mailed to her had arrived at the post office, so Holly ha ppily went there. When she arrived, she tried to tell the worker why she was there. But the worker didn't speak any English and couldn't understand her accent when she spoke in French. The more she repeated herself, the more hopeless she felt. She was about to break down in tears because she just really needed that package from home.
Just then, a French woman who introduced herself as Jouve came to her rescue. Jouve stepped in, looked at Holly and said in English, “Can I help you?” And she spoke to the worker. Within two minutes, the package was in Holly's hands. After that, Jouve in vited Holly to her house for dinner the following Sunday.
“It became my habit to have dinner with Jouve and her family every Sunday. It was a safe place for me to practice my French without all those feelings from before. I really felt like I was at home there. Ever since then, we have been keeping in touch with each other,” Holly said. “Her act of kindness has influenced my life in many ways—I tend to pay more attention to people who might be in trouble, and offer whatever I can to them. And I'm forever thankful for what Jouve did for me.”

Data(数据) centers built to power AI produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees, creating“data center heat islands”.
Marinoni from the University of Cambridge and his co-workers saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data center has been increasing and is likely to“explode” in the coming years, and they decided to measure the impact. The researchers have taken satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates(坐标) of more than 8,400 AI data centers.
Recognizing that the rise in surface temperatures could also be due to other influencers, the researchers chose to focus their research on data centers located away from heavily populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2℃ in the months after an AI data center started operations. In the most ex treme cases, the increase in temperature was9.1℃. The effect wasn't limited to the data centers' immediate surroundings— the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometers away. Seven kilometers away, there was only a 30percent reduction in the intensity(强度).
“The results were quite surprising,” says Marinoni. “This. could become a huge problem.”Studying population data, the researchers discovered that more than 340 million people live within10 kilometers of data centers, where temperatures are higher than they would be if the data centers hadn't been built there. Areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and Aragon province in Spain

saw a 2℃ increase in temperature over the 20 years between 2004 and 2024, which couldn't otherwise be explained. Marinoni says, “The message I would like. to deliver is simple: Be careful about designing and developing data centers.”
28. What is a data center heat island?
A. A region where temperatures rise quickly.
B. A problem that data centers waste much energy.
C. A distant island that has seen large crowds of tourists.
D. A situation where the land around data centers gets warmer.

A. Reduce data centers’ energy need.
B. Find out data centers' effect on temperature.
C. Compare the data centers in different regions.
D. Explain the reason for rising global temperatures.
30. Why did the researchers focus on data centers in less populated areas?
A. To make it easier to collect data.
B. To raise the correctness of the findings.
C. To protect the people living in those areas.
D. To cut down the cost of satellite measurements.
31. What can we learn about the data center heat island?

B. It has already influenced large populations.
C. It is the main reason for global temperature rise.
D. It has no connection with the design of data centers.

More was a farmer, who worked long hours in the fields in a small village in Maharashtra state. He was thin but seemed healthy. Eight years ago, he went for a blood test and the result staggered him. More, now 56, was told he had type 2 diabetes—a disease often connected with inactive life in the city. “Though I was taking medicines, I still didn't feel normal,” says More.“Some days, it was hard to get through the work.”
The causes of More's problems remain unclear, but the doctors did uncover something when they asked about his working conditions. In the grape fields where he works, More is usually exposed (暴露) to a mix of crop pesticides— something used to kill insects. More and more research shows that these pesticides may harm the system of microbes(微生物) inside the human body. This system helps us break down food, make important nutrients, and strengthen our immune system. The system also sends messages that affect how our bodies work and even how our brains function. If this system is harmed, it may cause many health problems. One of these problems is the growing number of people with type 2 diabetes around the world, even among those who are not fat.
Those who are exposed on the job, like More, may be at the highest risk, but pesticides used on crops or in homes may also be harmful to the microbes. “If you repeatedly contact low amounts of pesticides, you may not see an immediate effect, but you can suffer long-term health pressure,”says one doctor.
For now, the best choice is to reduce exposure to pesticides according to the doctor. But forMore, that's not easy. He now covers his face while using pesticides, and sometimes wonders whether he should leave the farm. But like many others in his village, he has no other choice.

She had taken many wild mountain trips there before, so she was quite familiar with the local terrain(地形)and road conditions. However, right after she climbed up to a mountain top, a sudden terrible storm arrived without any warning. It began to snow heavily at once, and very soon, she found herself trapped in the middle of a violent snowstorm.
Standing at the highest point for miles around, Jean was at great risk of being hit by lightning. She gave up the original plan of going back along the fixed trail(小径) and chose to climb down the steep and icy mountain slope carefully, believing in her climbing experience and skills.
Unluckily, during one difficult part on the way, Jean suddenly slipped and fell more than 100feet down the rock y mountain. She was lucky enough to stay alive after the fall, but she suffered serious injuries, with many broken bones and terrible body pain.
Worse still, because of the extreme weather, there was no signal on her mobile phone, which made it totally impossible for her to call anyone for help. Jean had no choice but to walk slowly through deep snow all the way back to the starting trailhead. Throughout the journey back, Jean suffered continuously from great pain. When she finally walked with difficulty into a parking lot,Jean immediately fell down to the ground. It had been exactly one day since she fell down from the mountain.
