Today, about 138,000 volunteers help run the U.S. national parks. Here are three volunteers, aged 8 to 88, who have made a difference.
Eight-year-old Hannah Murray serves as a Park Keeper at Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park. Her favorite job is pulling the grass between the bricks (砖) of an old building. “We have to be very careful because the bricks are very old,” said Murray. “So it has to be done by my tiny fingers.” Murray won a prize in 2022 for her efforts in encouraging other children to volunteer in the park.
David Titley, 38, is part of the Wildlife Brigade at Grand Teton National Park. With over 30 volunteers, the group tries to keep people and wildlife safe when they meet each other along busy roads. Titley’s tasks include watching animal acts, answering visitors’ questions, and making sure that guests don’t try to touch or feed wild animals.
In 1972, Anne Kozak started volunteering at the Wild Gardens of Acadia National Park. About 54 years later, Kozak, 88, is still at the garden almost every day. Although she isn’t able to dig for long, she spends about 600 hours a year managing other volunteers and helping to raise money. “It’s like a job and lasts 12 months of the year,” said Kozak. “What was once a wild land is now a beautiful place for visitors.”

People usually think volunteering is just for adults. It seems hard for students like us. But it is completely different in Canada. The government encourages (鼓励) people of any age to volunteer and make contributions (贡献) to the whole society. So, if students want to graduate (毕业) from high school, 30 hours of volunteering is needed. If students want to get into a good university, it helps if they contribute a lot to society. Volunteering is an important point that universities will think about.
Besides, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes many different jobs, such as wrapping (包装) gifts in a shopping mall, taking care of small kids or cleaning up a church. Students can choose what they want to do and register online.
I got my first volunteer job at New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. My job is to check the documents (文件) on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During the volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster.
As a volunteer, I am proud of myself. I enjoy doing my job and helping others.

Everyone faces difficulties in life. Daniel Kish was born with an unusual eye condition and lost his eyesight before he was even 14 months old.
Soon after, though, he started doing something amazing. He learned to click his tongue to help him get around. Now Kish gets around using sonar (声呐), and he’s so good at it that he can ride a bicycle alone on public roads. In 2000, he started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB), where he teaches others to use sonar. In an interview with National Geographic, he explains how sonar works.
“When I click, it creates sound waves (浪). These waves reflect off surfaces all around and come back to my ears. My brain then processes the sound and turns it into mental pictures. Each click is like a camera flash-it helps me make a 3D picture of my surroundings (周围) for hundreds of feet. It’s like having a chat with the environment.”
Kish thinks it’s exciting to ride a bike using sonar, even though he has to click twice a second — way more than he usually does. “Getting around this way might sound a little dangerous,” he says. “But most people in the world fear things they just imagine. I love hiking and mountain biking. I go almost everywhere, and I’ve never had an accident or hurt myself.”
He’s happy to be able to help more blind children make their lives better. “We’ve helped over 10,000 students in nearly 40 countries,” he tells the reporter. “Many students are surprised at how fast they see results. Seeing isn’t in the eyes—it’s in the mind.”
7.Why does Kish move around using sonar?
A.Because he is good at making clicks.
B.Because it makes him “see” the world.
C.Because he has a great interest in science.
D.Because it is important for him to keep healthy.
8.Which of the following is the right order showing how sonar works?
①The sound waves reflect off surfaces.
②The person makes a clicking sound.
③The brain turns the sound into pictures.
④The sound waves reach the person’s ears.
A.①④③② B.②①④③ C.①④②③ D.②③①④
9.What can we learn about World Access for the Blind (WAFTB) from the passage?
A.It offers the blind free bicycles. B.It sells sonar products to the blind.
C.It teaches the blind to use sonar. D.It helps the blind find more friends.
10.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.Daniel Kish is brave and helpful. B.Daniel Kish uses sonar just for riding bicycles.
C.Most blind people can use sonar easily. D.Daniel Kish is afraid of dangerous sports.
D

For most people, having things stolen feels like a wrong act. Robbie Pruitt admitted (承认) that he got mad when he found out someone took his mountain bike in September, 2019. But soon enough, his feelings changed. After letting go of his anger and sadness, he began to feel sorry for the thief instead.
For Pruitt, a keen bicyclist, the first thing to do was replace his stolen bike. But when he went bike shopping, he found few available, which got him thinking: What if many people were buying bikes because buses weren’t running normally, and what if the person who’d taken his bike really needed transportation to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted (发帖) it on the community website. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. He also asked for unwanted bikes, which he would repair—again for free. And then he would donate them to folks who could truly use them but didn’t have the money to buy one.
As soon as the post was published, Pruitt received thirty used bicycles. Then came more than 500 requests for detailed information. By the end of 2020, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 for donation or to be returned to their owners.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to families that are truly struggling. He doesn’t just provide bikes—he also helps kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-worth, and promote feelings of community. Meanwhile, the kids have gained a sense of accomplishment.
“It’s a really great experience for kids,” said a neighbor in an interview with the local newspaper. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service but it’s not just the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he can make on people.”

12.Where did Pruitt post his bike repair plan?(不超过5个词)

The question of what is the right thing to do when an old person falls over in the street has been discussed for a long time. Once, a man called Peng Yu helped an old woman who fell over in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. The woman later said that she was knocked down by Peng and asked him to pay forty percent of her medical costs after Peng sent her to hospital. Many people worried this event would have a bad influence. 1
2 Helping others is what they should do. But learning to be more professional in helping others is also very important. Non-governmental organizations should be formed and professional training should be offered. 3

Volunteer work not only plays an important role in developing young people’s skills, but also gives them a feeling of satisfaction. What’s more, volunteer work is of great value to the young as well as the whole society. 4 In this way, we can make a better and warmer world.
A.This way, more people can take part in volunteer work better.
B.Most of the college students would like to take part in volunteer work.
C.So more people should be encouraged to take part in volunteer work.

【答案】7.B 8.B 9.C 10.A
【导语】本文主要讲述了盲人Daniel Kish通过自学舌头发出的声呐来感知环境、独立出行,并创办组织帮助其他盲人学会这项技能的事迹。

7.由第二段:“He learned to click his tongue to help him get around”和第三段“My brain then processes the sound and turns it into mental pictures”,表明Kish使用声呐是因为它能帮助他“看见”周围的世界。
8.由第三段描述可知,声呐的工作原理为:先发出咔嗒声 (②),声波从物体表面反射回来 (①),反射的声波传回耳朵 (④),大脑将声音转化为图像 (③),因此正确顺序为②①④③。
9.由第二段:“he started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB), where he teaches others to use sonar”,表明该组织教盲人使用声呐。
10.由第四段:“I love hiking and mountain biking. I go almost everywhere, and I’ve never had an accident or hurt myself”以及第五段“He’s happy to be able to help more blind children make their lives better”,表明Kish勇敢尝试危险活动且乐于助人,因此推断他勇敢且乐于助人。

4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Volunteering is only for adults.
B.Libraries provide many volunteer jobs.

11.When did Pruitt find out someone took his mountain bike?(不超过5个词)
12.Where did Pruitt post his bike repair plan?(不超过5个词)

Chinese college students want to do volunteer work and would like to help those in need. If they are asked whether they arc willing to help elderly people who fall over in the street, most of their answers will be “yes”.
There are different kinds of volunteer work including environmental protection, community services, teaching in remote (偏远的) villages, visiting the old at old people’s homes and so on. And 83.1 percent of college students actually do volunteer work every year.
D.Remember not to do any volunteer work which is personal and unprofessional.
