Subject:
Dear Roommate,
Before I met you, I was not sure if we would be friends and how we’d get along. We came, and move-in day arrived sooner than I expected.
I always heard people talk about making a good first impression (印象) when meeting someone new. But I was only 14 years old and felt nervous because I was far from home in a new place.
In the first two weeks, we started getting to know each other, sharing bits about ourselves. As the weeks turned into months, a good friendship began to form. My worries about having a roommate disappeared. I was lucky to have such a cool roommate.
As my roommate, you saw my best and my worst. I also saw you through hard times. I tried to help by listening, giving you space or sharing delicious food to cheer you up.
Years went by, and we weren’t roommates anymore, but we were still friends. Our friendship wasn’t as strong as when we shared a room, but we still hung out.
This year, I found that many lessons you taught me were helpful when I entered college. I learned things outside the classroom, and I thank you for that. You taught me that doing things at the right time helps you succeed. You also taught me that it doesn’t matter what other people think as long as I am happy with myself.
Four years have passed since we first met in middle school. We’ve both changed a lot over time, yet I always knew you’d never judge (以偏见批评) me. Even now, when I face new challenges, I remember how you helped me through those hard times.
So when I look back, I understand something important: In my first year at middle school, I didn’t just have a roommate. I had a brother.

The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It’s a good chance to work on different activities that you don’t have much time to do during the rest of the year.
We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.
Alexis said, “At school, I’m really tired, so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many outdoor activities.”
Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a café. She told us, “It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year— sleep more, and see my friends more.”
We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored. About half (52%) of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is exactly how it should be.
But not everyone said their summer vacation would be the right balance between being busy and relaxing. Many thought that they’d be too bored.

And at that time the King wanted to please the Germans, because he was angry with the French. That all changed later, of course.
Henry couldn’t go and see Anne for himself, so he sent his artist Holbein to paint a picture of her. Holbein painted a fine picture of Anne and sent it back to Henry. Teenagers are in a special stage of physical and mental (心理) development: Social nervousness is quite common among teenagers, but don’t be afraid. The things that make you nervous in social situations can become good points. 21
Thoughts are not facts. Teenagers with social anxiety (焦虑) usually think that bad things will surely come. 22 Just because you’re scared something bad will happen doesn’t mean it will. For example, a teen might be afraid of asking teachers simple questions, but teachers are glad to help.
23 We find that teens with social anxiety often pay too much attention to themselves. This can cause problems. Try to look at others instead. You can start by listening to what they say and joining in their activities.
Discover your advantages. Teenagers with social anxiety have their own strong points. They may be very kind-hearted and can have great talks about the things they are interested in, though unaware (没意识到). For example, a quiet teen who loves painting can share ideas actively when talking about it. 24
Master self-encouragement. Teenagers with social anxiety often feel bad about themselves. When that happens, they should learn to encourage themselves. 25 It can also help you to feel better and more confident.
