Passage 7
(24-25八年级下·福建厦门·期末)
Like cool swims and lazy vacations, fireflies are a sign of summer. Some of us have sweet memories of catching them on hot summer evenings. But how much do you really know about these little creatures?
Fireflies use their lights to “talk” — mainly to find mates, but also to protect their homes and drive away things that might hurt them. What’s special is that their light doesn’t make any heat. This “cold light” comes from two chemicals (化学物质) in their body — luciferin and luciferase. When mixed with ATP (found in all living things) and O2, they create the light. Fireflies truly are nature’s tiny lanterns. Sadly, human activities are putting them in danger.
One big problem is the loss of homes. As cities and farms develop, the forests and fields where fireflies live are being destroyed. Another problem is light pollution. The light from homes, cars and streetlights make it harder for fireflies to signal (发信号) each other during mating. This means fewer baby fireflies will be born next season.
Here are some easy ways to help. First, turn off outdoor lights so that fireflies can signal each other freely. Also, leaving fallen trees, dead leaves, and natural waste in yards gives a good place for baby fireflies to grow. Since most fireflies live near still water, creating small ponds can bring them in. Most importantly, stop using too many pesticides (农药) which is bad for fireflies too.
Making these simple changes isn’t just about helping fireflies — it’s about keeping the magic of summer alive. Let’s work together to protect the beautiful glow for kids in the future.

What do you usually do before exams? Are there any special traditions in your country?
In the UK, there are many fun traditions before exams. In some countryside areas of England, people may see “wishing trees” with coins hammered (钉入) into the bark (树皮). Students believe this will bring good luck from the “tree spirits”. At the University of Oxford, there is a custom of touching the “Kissing Stone”, an old stone inside the church, to get good luck. Also, some students refuse to eat chicken before exams. The reason is simple and funny: “You don’t want to be a chicken and get frightened during the exam!”
In South Korea, we give our friends sticky rice cakes and taffies(太妃糖) before exams. This is because the word “stick” sounds like “pass” in Korean. People believe that eating sticky food helps students “stick” to success and pass their tests. It is a way to show support and wish each other good luck. I remember when my best friend had a big test, I bought his favorite sticky rice cakes to make him happy. This tradition makes us feel warm and strong before exams.
In the US, students have different habits before exams. Some wear “lucky” clothes, like special socks or underwear, to bring good luck. Other students do simple things, like doing exercises or eating snacks that they think are lucky.
I have a special pencil that I always use for exams. I believe it helps me do better. These small habits help me feel calm and ready.

Passage 10
(24-25八年级下·福建福州·期末)
There are about 400,000 kinds of plants on Earth. Some plants are as big as tall buildings and others are as small as rice. Plants play an important part in nature because they give out oxygen (氧气) for breathing.
What is a plant?
Most people can easily tell the differences between an animal and a plant. Animals can move around, but plants can’t. Animals get food from the outside world, but plants make their own food by photosynthesis (光合作用). Most plants have roots, stems and leaves. Animals reproduce by having babies. Most plants do this by growing flowers and making seeds. All plants need energy to stay alive and grow, and they get it from sunlight instead of food.
How does a plant grow?
Most animals grow in a certain way, and DNA plays an important part in their growth. That is to say, even when they are small, it’s easy to know what they will look like after they grow up. Plants are different. Their final shapes also depend on where they live. For example, a tree can be big and round if it grows up in an open space, but much taller and thinner if it grows in the woods with other trees all around. Plants are unable to move from one environment to another, so it is important that they are able to adapt (适应) to the environment.

Plants are more than just pretty to look at. They give us fruits, vegetables and food we eat. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing? They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier.
We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of chemicals from many things around us. This poor air quality (质量) can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe (呼吸). When the air inside buildings gets really bad, people even call them “sick buildings”.
The good news is that plants are like nature’s little superheroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO2) and breathe out oxygen (O2) which we humans need to live. They add moisture (水分) to the air and help us breathe better when it’s dry.

They set up a closed building called “bio—home” for experiments (实验) Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better, the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go inside without feeling unwell.
So you see, plants are fantastic! They are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in our health. Summer is coming quickly. It’s the time of the year in which people like to change their clothes for the new season. But how about adding something high-tech (高科技的) to the summer look? Let’s check out some of the ways in which technology (技术) is changing the clothes people wear.
A Chinese research team has developed 3D printing techniques that can create clothes with the ability to change temperatures. The technology they used is those materials that change with the environment. The team placed an object in the clothing that could be transformed (转换). It also absorbs (吸收) or gives off heat depending on the wearer’s body temperature. Zhang Yongyi, a Chinese Academy of Sciences researcher, said it was the first time such clothing had been made using a controllable 3D printing method.
Scientists in South Korea have developed a kind of wearable clothes that create electricity (电) as wearers keep moving. Of course, it doesn’t take much time or effort for people. Wearers only need to move naturally to power small electronic objects. The inside of the clothes produces energy, which is then stored. Although the clothes have an electronic object built in, they feel completely normal. Kim Sang-Woo, a professor at the Sungkyunkwan University, is proud of his team’s development, saying, “It feels like a normal jacket.”

As one of the key progress of this mission (任务), Long March-2F rocket has made 32 technical improvements. One of them is the telemetry system (遥测系统). In the past, scientists stored important information in a “black box” (a special recorder) and studied it after its return. But now, the new system collects it by using cameras and sensors (传感器) on the tower in some key locations. With a transmission rate (传输率) of 5 Mbps, it can send around 100 A4-sized pages of documents every second. This allows flight information to be collected and sent back to Earth in real time during the whole mission.
Later this year, China plans to carry out two manned missions and one supply (补给) mission. If these are achieved, the space station will be able to run over 180 science programs including life science and other fields. At the same time, China is working toward landing astronauts on the moon before 2030. And new rockets and spaceships are being tested to make sure they are safe. All these steps show China’s dream to reach deep space and share knowledge with the world.
China’s space journey grows more promising every day. Each mission shows not just scientific achievement but also the realization of a centuries-old dream.

Passage 7
(24-25八年级下·福建厦门·期末)
In China, AI pets become more and more popular with children. These special toys can talk, play games, tell stories, and even understand how kids feel. For example, BooBoo, which looks like a guinea pig (豚鼠), came out in May 2024. Within just a few months, over 1,000 units of BooBoo were sold. This shows that kids really love these smart pets.
Many kids in cities feel lonely because they don’t have enough friends. Besides, their parents are busy and have little time to spend with them. In this case, AI pets become the ones that kids can talk to and play with. That’s why AI pets then get popular. Unlike real pets, AI pets are also easy to take care of. But after getting BooBoo, an AI pet that can talk and interact (互动) with people, she feels less stressed and not lonely anymore.

(24-25八年级下·福建泉州·期末)
Tie-dye (扎染), a colorful Chinese art, has a history of over 1,000 years. It became a widely spread folk art after the Song Dynasty. The Bai people in Yunnan first used this method to create (创造) beautiful styles on their clothes and show their wisdom (智慧) in art.
How does the magic work? First, tie cloth closely with lines before carefully coloring it. Then, soak (浸泡) it in colorful natural juices from plants. After that, untie to show amazing pictures—no two pieces are ever identical, making each piece of cloth the only one in the world.
In Chinese culture, if you wear tie-dyed clothes, then you will be lucky and safe. For example, blue and white designs stand for peace with nature. During festivals, people often wear these clothes when they are celebrating together. This traditional art not only shows culture but also connects different generations (一代人) through sharing it.
Today, tie-dye is popular with many people around the world. This traditional skill adds much color to modern fashion, creating new styles. And that’s how some people become overweight.
________, the government has started a plan called “Weight Management Year”. This three-year plan wants to help people know the importance of keeping a healthy weight. The government sends experts (专家) to schools and communities to hold meetings. They guide people on how to do more exercise, what healthy food to eat, and how to get enough sleep.

Passage 4
(24-25八年级下·福建厦门·期末)
If you search for “A Bei Bei” on Chinese social media, you’ll see photos of old, worn items like broken blankets, torn toy bears, or baby clothes. Though they look ready to be thrown away, these objects are actually precious to their owners. Many people have kept them for over ten years because they bring comfort and happy memories.
The name “A Bei Bei” began when a mother shared her son’s nickname (绰号) for his favorite blanket. Such items are called “transitional (过渡的) objects.” These help children feel safe when facing new situations, like their first day at school.
While most children stop needing these items as they grow up, many Chinese adults still keep their “A Bei Bei.” On social media, people aged 20 to 30 post photos of childhood toys or blankets with funny words: “I’m 25 and still hug my A Bei Bei every night!”
Why do people keep these old items? They are like time machines. A toy animal might remind someone of bedtime stories with grandparents. A blanket could carry memories of family trips. For busy young adults, “A Bei Bei” is a warm friend supporting (支持) them in a stressful world.
This trend has touched millions. On Xiaohongshu, a popular app, the “A Bei Bei” topic has more than 670,000 posts. Users share stories about their lifelong “friends”. One wrote, “My ‘A Bei Bei’ still smells like my childhood home. Holding it helps me sleep.”

Passage 8
(24-25八年级下·福建泉州·期末)
36.What is a custom before exams in the University of Oxford?
A. B. C. D.
37.Why do Korean students feel warm and strong when they receive sticky foods?

Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·福建福州·期末)
▲ Scientists found that plants can take in harmful (有害的) chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe.
They make our indoor environments cleaner and healthier, making us feel better. Next time you see a plant, remember all the amazing things it can do for us!

Passage 4
(24-25八年级下·福建龙岩·期末)
In another amazing study, clothes could serve as devices (设备) themselves. A team of engineering students from the University of Washington, the US, have led these efforts by putting a special thing into cotton T-shirts. The clothing can then send the message that can be received by cellphones.

Passage 13
(24-25八年级下·福建福州·期末)
A report shows that over half of adults (成年人) and about 20% of school aged children in China are overweight (超重). In earlier studies about weight, it was found that around 30% of young adults aged 18-25 put on about 4 pounds (about 1.8 kilograms) in just one year. Also, it was seen that about 40% of grown-ups between 40 and 50 years old were a bit too heavy. This may cause serious illnesses. People should pay more attention to their weight.
The reasons for getting overweight are different, such as unhealthy food, not getting enough exercise, having too little sleep, and illnesses. Take food as an example—some people are too busy to cook meals by themselves, so they choose to eat fast food. Fast food is convenient (方便的), but there is a lot of salt, fat and sugar in it.
If you have the same problem, you can ask the experts in your school or community for help. They will give a hand and tell you what to do. To have a healthy body, you should take actions now.
