1. Basic Information
Textbook: Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Grade 8 Volume 2, Unit 4 Helping out
Lesson Type: Speaking & Presentation Lesson (Production Class)
Theme: Plan a Day of Help / Presenting Goodwill Plans
Class Duration: 45 minutes
Students: Grade 8 Students
2. Textbook Analysis
This lesson is the output and presentation period of Unit 4. Based on the reading theme The Circle of Goodwill, it focuses on planning a day of help and presenting practical helping plans. It aims to help students transfer the input language knowledge into practical oral and written output.
The lesson adopts a task-based teaching mode. It guides students to complete group discussion, plan organization, language polishing, classroom presentation and peer evaluation step by step. It covers five key dimensions: time and place, target people, helping activities, possible challenges and possible results. Combined with unit language tips and useful expressions, this lesson effectively improves students’ ability of logical planning, cooperative learning and public speaking, and further strengthens the core theme of passing on goodwill and helping others.
3. Students’ Analysis
Grade 8 students have mastered basic vocabulary and sentence patterns about helping others in the reading class, and have a certain understanding of the theme of goodwill circulation. However, they are weak in systematic task planning, logical expression and public presentation. Most students cannot organize their ideas completely according to fixed outlines, and lack standardized oral expression scaffolds for describing activities, analyzing challenges and predicting results.
Through hierarchical group tasks, outline guidance and language tip support, this lesson helps students standardize their thinking logic, enrich their expression, and confidently complete plan making and classroom presentation, so as to improve their comprehensive language application ability.
4. Teaching Objectives
4.1 Language Competence
1. Master the unit’s useful expressions and sentence patterns for describing helping plans, including introducing target people, arranging time and place, designing activities, analyzing challenges and predicting results.
2. Be able to make a complete and logical Day of Help plan according to the given outline, and finish fluent and standard classroom presentation.
4.2 Thinking Quality
1. Cultivate systematic logical thinking through group discussion, multi-dimensional plan design and challenge analysis.
2. Develop critical thinking and predictive thinking by analyzing practical difficulties and predicting possible results of volunteer activities.
4.3 Cultural Awareness
Strengthen the awareness of caring for people in need and taking social responsibility. Understand the practical significance of small goodwill actions, and form the good quality of actively helping others and passing on kindness.

Multimedia courseware, group task sheets, plan outline templates, unit language tip cards, peer evaluation forms
7. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Group Discussion & Topic Confirmation (10 mins)
Task 1: Discuss and vote to confirm the target people to help
1. Divide students into several groups. Group members discuss different groups of people in need of help (the elderly, the disabled, poor children, community cleaners, patients and so on).
2. Discuss specific and feasible ways to offer help for different target groups.
3. Hold a group vote to confirm the final people to help.
4. Determine the five core dimensions of the preliminary plan: time and place, target people, helping activities, possible challenges, possible results.
Design Purpose: Activate students’ thinking, ensure everyone’s participation through group cooperation, clarify the core direction of the plan, and lay a foundation for subsequent idea organization.
Step 2 Organize Ideas & Complete the Plan Outline (12 mins)
Task 2: Finish the complete plan with outline and language tips
1. The teacher presents unit language tips and useful expressions, guides students to collect and apply unit sentences for plan description.
2. Students organize group ideas and complete the plan strictly according to the four-part outline:
Part 1: Basic Information
Introduce the target people in need of help and state the purpose of the voluntary activity.
Part 2: Helping Activities & Arrangement
Describe specific helping activities in detail, and clarify the exact time and place of the activity.
Part 3: Possible Challenges
Discuss and analyze practical difficulties that may appear in the activity, such as weather problems, insufficient tools, limited time and so on.
Part 4: Possible Results
Predict the positive results and influence of the helping activity, including the changes of the helped people and the spiritual gains of volunteers.
3. Group members polish sentences together, standardize expressions, and improve the integrity and logic of the plan.
Design Purpose: Standardize students’ thinking with fixed outline, help students flexibly use unit language knowledge, and realize the transformation from scattered ideas to systematic written planning.
Step 3 Practice & Classroom Presentation (15 mins)
Task 3: Internal practice and public presentation
1. In groups, students take turns to practice presenting the whole plan. Group members correct pronunciation, intonation and logical problems for each other.
2. Each group selects representatives to present their Day of Help plan to the whole class, covering all four outline parts and five core dimensions.
3. The teacher gives timely guidance and comments on students’ language expression, logical order and presentation manners.
Design Purpose: Strengthen students’ oral output ability, exercise public speaking courage and ability, and achieve the core goal of presenting ideas.
Step 4 Peer Evaluation & Summary (8 mins)
Task 4: Evaluate and select excellent works
1. The whole class conducts peer evaluation according to the rules, comprehensively scoring from plan completeness, logical rationality, language fluency and presentation performance.
2. Select and record the best three plans and the best three presentations in the class.
3. The teacher makes a comprehensive summary, affirms students’ cooperative achievements, points out common expression problems, and emphasizes the key sentence patterns and logical points of plan presentation.
Design Purpose: Cultivate students’ evaluation and reflective ability, consolidate classroom key knowledge, and stimulate students’ initiative and sense of honor in language output.

9. Teaching Reflection
This lesson focuses on students’ language output and practical application, adopting student-centered group cooperative learning. The four-step teaching process is clear and hierarchical, which fully fits the teaching goal of “presenting ideas”. The outline guidance and language tip scaffolds effectively solve students’ problems of unclear thinking and single expression, helping most students complete high-quality plan making and classroom presentation.
In the class, individual students are not active in group discussion, and a few groups have problems of incomplete plan content and illogical analysis of challenges and results. In future teaching, the teacher can strengthen group role division, set clear task responsibilities for each student, and provide more diverse sentence pattern examples for difficult parts, so as to improve the overall quality of students’ output and presentation.
