王文采,中国科学院院士,我国植物分类学和植物地理学领域的引领者之一,也是世界著名的植物分类学家。他共发表28个新属、约1,370个新种,并主持编纂了《中国高等植物图鉴》和《中国高等植物科属检索表》,收录中国高等植物15,000多种,占中国植物总数的一半,是世界上规模最大的植物图鉴著作。

1. Nature presents us with endless wonders. Most people get interested and ask questions. But one person took his interest all the way to the fields. He was born in the flowering season of early summer, and made plants his life. This person was Wang Wencai.
What was Wang Wencai interested in?
He was interested in nature and plants.
2. For over 70 years, Professor Wang explored China’s plants with great passion and hard work. He discovered and named about1,370 new plant species. To carry out his research, he spent years in wild mountains and forests. Once, he fell seriously ill while doing field work in Yunnan. Though he nearly died, Wang never stopped his work. He lost sight in his right eye at the age of 83. But he didn’t let anybody know. With a magnifier in hand, he still carried on with his research for another 10 years.

3 Despite his huge success, Wang seldom thought about personal honour or wealth. Although he received the First Class Award of the NationalNatural Science Award twice, he hardly mentioned it. For him, the award belonged to the team, and he was just doing his job. In fact,Wang was always quiet about his achievements. He was such a great scientist. But for a long time, even his granddaughter had no idea.

He was humble (谦虚的) because he did not care about personal honour or wealth and hardly talked about his achievements. 宾语从句(1)
1.定义和构成
宾语从句是英语中用来充当宾语的句子宾语从句一般由“引导词十主语十谓语十其他”构成,语序要用陈述句语序。
2.that引导的宾语从句
that引导的宾语从句用来陈述事实,that本身无词义,在从句中不作任何成分,在口语中常常省略。但是如果有两个并列的宾语从句,第二个从句的引导词that不能省略。
例如:
He said (that) the book was veryinteresting and that (不能省 略)
all thechildren liked to read it.他说那本书很有趣,所有的小朋友都喜欢看。
(1)主句的谓语动词是表示肯定的概念, believe, expect, explain, feel, forget,guess, hear, hope,imagine, know, prefer,promise, remember, report, say, see, tell,think,understand,warn,wish 等时,其后面的宾语从句一般用that引导。
例如:
I hope (that) he will be fine soon. 我希望他很快好起来。
He said (that) he didn't like music. 说他不喜欢音乐。
(2)主句由“连系动词十形容词”构成的“系表”结构,常接that引导的宾语从句。这类形容词多表示感情,如afraid,certain,
sure,surprised 等。
例如:
glad, happy, pleased, sad, satisfied, sorry,
I'm afraid (that) he can't come.恐怕他不能来了。
We are all pleased (that) you can come.
你们能来我们都很高兴。
3.由whether或if引导的宾语从句
whether,if 都意为“是否”,当宾语从句要表达不肯定或疑问的概念时,从句由whether或if来引导,不能用that。whether 和if在从句中不可省略。
例如: I don' t know whether/if he will help me.我不知道他是否会帮助我。
【注意】一般情况下,if和 whether 可以互换,但以下3种情况只能用whether:
(1)在不定式之前。
例如:
We don’t decide whether to go toBeijing or not.我们还没决定是否去北京。
(2)在介词之后。
例如: It depends on whether you want to do it.
这取决于你是否想去做这件事。
(3)与or not连用表示选择意义时。
例如: They are talking about whether to buy acar or not.
他们正在讨论是否买一辆小汽车。
