Recently, a story has become popular online. A girl studying in the UK said her teacher decided to leave the job and go to knit (织) sweaters for penguins. It sounds interesting and unusual. But in fact, the teacher is not the first person to do this. The work of knitting sweaters for penguins started over 20 years ago.
In the late 1990s, there was an oil spill (石油泄漏) near Philip Island, Australia. The spill left many penguins covered in oil. Although people took quick action to save them, many penguins died or lived in bad health later.
When there is oil on penguins’ feathers (羽毛), they will clean them with their beaks (鸟喙). As a result, they might take some oil into their bodies. This will kill them. Oil is also bad for their feathers and makes it hard for them to keep warm.
To help penguins, some groups called on people to knit sweaters for them. The groups wanted to give the sweaters to penguins so that they could wear them while they were waiting to be cleaned. The sweaters could help them stay warm and stop them from taking oil into their bodies. Many people gave a hand.
In 2001, another oil spill happened in the waters near Phillip Island. 438 penguins got covered in oil. Luckily, people successfully saved 96% with sweaters. In 2011, another group of penguins got help. What good news!
52. What did the girl’s teacher do?
A. The teacher started a knitting club. B. The teacher left the job to help penguins.
C. The teacher wrote a book about penguins. D. The teacher called on students to help animals.
53. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The knitters. B. The feathers. C. The teachers. D. The penguins.
54. How does the writer show sweaters were helpful in the last paragraph?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By using famous sayings.
55. What is the best title of the passage?
A. A lucky bird B. A new hobby
C. They need help D. Knitting with love
【答案】52. B 53. D 54. B 55. D

Deforestation (森林砍伐) happens when people cut or burn down all the trees in a forest and do not plant new trees. Forests cover large parts of our Earth. ____56____ What bad news!
Reasons for deforestation:
●People need trees to live. In places where people don’t have electricity, they use wood to keep homes warm and cook.
●____57____
●As cities get bigger, people need more space to build homes, shops, and factories.
●People cut down forests to dig up underground natural resources.
What happens when forests are destroyed (被破坏) :
●Forest trees protect the soil from the heat of the Sun. ____58____ When forests are destroyed, the soil dries out and there are no trees to hold the soil in place. Then rain can wash away the soil.
● ____59____ When forests are destroyed, some plants and animals can be in trouble or die out.
● CO2 can cause climate change. ____60____ If forests are destroyed, more CO2 stays in the air and makes climate change worse.
A. Trees help to hold the soil in place.
B. Plants take in CO2 and produce oxygen.
C. Forests are homes to many plants and animals.
D. Farmers need more land to grow crops and raise animals.
E. In the last 200 years, people have cut down about half of these forests.
【答案】56. E 57. D 58. A 59. C 60. B
“In places where people don’t have electricity, they use wood to keep homes warm and cook.”和“People cut down forests to dig up underground natural resources.”
“Forest trees protect the soil from the heat of the Sun.”说明树木保护土壤免受太阳炙烤,后文说森林被破坏后土壤干涸、被雨水冲走,空缺处需要一个过渡说明树木的固土作用。选项A“树木帮助固定土壤”正好承上启下。
【59题详解】
“When forests are destroyed, some plants and animals can be in trouble or die out.”
选项B“植物吸收CO2并产生氧气”与后文“more CO2 stays in the air”形成对比,符合语境。

Good afternoon, everyone! I’d like to share my family’s ways to save water, electricity, and food.
To save water, we take shorter showers and turn off the tap when brushing teeth. We also reuse clean water to water flowers. To save electricity, we wash thin clothes by hand instead of using the machine. We always turn off lights when leaving a room. To save food, my parents only cook enough for each meal. We never waste leftovers and eat up everything.
These small actions save resources and protect our earth. I believe everyone can do something to help. Let’s start from daily life!

My name is Ryan. Last summer, my family went to an island for holiday. There were lots of fun things to do on the island, but my favourite was fishing. Every day, my parents, my brother Derek and I went to the beach with our little fishing boat. Mum didn’t like fishing, so she stayed on the beach and read a book.
One morning, while we were fishing, we heard a loud noise. “What was that?” I asked. “It might be a turtle swimming under the boat,” said Dad. Derek and I looked around the boat, but we saw nothing. Then we heard a different noise, which sounded like an animal. “Look! Dad, there it is!” shouted Derek. It was a sea turtle and it couldn’t swim well.
When we got closer, we saw there was a piece of plastic around the turtle’s legs. “Let’s help it,” I said. Dad jumped into the water and brought the turtle back to the boat. “There you go, little turtle,” Dad said as he cut the plastic off. Then Derek and I put it back in the water. “We should make a sign (标志) about not throwing rubbish into the sea, and put it in the sand on the beach,” I said. “If we don’t do anything to stop sea pollution, these sea animals will die.”

Every day, Xiaoxi carries a medicine box and reminds (提醒) old people in a friendly voice. It may say, “Grandma, it’s 11:30 a.m.! Time for your medicine!” Grandma Zhao says, “I used to forget to take my medicine, but thanks to Xiaoxi, I won’t miss it now!”

C. By asking questions. D. By using famous sayings.
55. What is the best title of the passage?

C. They need help D. Knitting with love
