I used to be a shy boy and I didn’t like to be noticed. I chose to sit quietly at the back of the classroom. I listened carefully but never answered teachers’ questions. After I joined the basketball club, everything changed. At first, I thought it was a crazy idea because I didn’t have the ability to keep up with the others in the club and they would laugh at me. But my teacher kept asking me to go for it. I agreed and decided to give a try.
When I first started attending the practice courses, I didn’t even know the rules of the game. That made me feel really stupid. Luckily, I wasn’t the only “new” one at the game, so I decided to learn from my coach (教练), do my best at each practice course, and not to find any excuse for the things “I didn’t know”. After class, I practiced a lot. Soon I knew much about the game.
Being part of a team was so exciting. Very soon I tried to take part in some games though I didn’t have much confidence. As time passed by, I learned how to play basketball well and how to work together.

A budget is a spending plan. It can help you spend money wisely. It can do this by cutting out wasteful spending. Of course, preparing a budget takes planning, and following a budget takes self-control.
To begin with, you need to set your goals. What does your family need and want? You must know this in order to work out the details of the budgets. Keep goals realistic (现实可行的). And then decide which of them are the most important.
The next step is finding out your family’s income — that is, all the money your family receives. This may come from parents’ salaries, part-time jobs, or other sources like gifts or lucky money. You need to know how much money you have before you can decide how to spend it wisely.
After you know how much money will be ready to use, it is time to list all of your family expenses. For example, you can write down housing costs, food, transportation, education, and daily needs. Putting these expenses into different groups can help you see where your money really goes.
Besides, if you are not satisfied with what you got for your money, look carefully at your spending. Studying your records will show where overspending has happened. It will also point out poor buying habits.
Lastly, it is also a good idea to prepare a small part of money for emergencies, like a broken machine or tool, or the need for medical care. By saving a little money for them, you will feel safer. This money will help you when something unexpected happens.
56. What is the main purpose of having a budget?
A. To cut out planning. B. To avoid self-control.
C. To make more money. D. To manage spending wisely.
57. What is the first step to make a budget?

58. What does the underlined word “expenses” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The money you can get. B. The money you will spend.
C. The money you can save. D. The money you want to make.
59. Why should you check your spending records?
A. To find new stores. B. To buy more things.
C. To correct bad habits. D. To show off your records.
60. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Why to spend and save money wisely. B. How to make and use a family budget.
C. How to find out poor buying habits. D. What to do with unexpected things.
D
An avalanche is a large amount of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, especially on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at a speed of 96 km/h to 129 km/h.
Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of human activities. Earthquakes and even animals’ movements can also make them happen.
Avalanches happen all year round. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When it happens, the fast-moving snow, ice and rocks can sweep away everything on the way. They cover people alive and the snow is so heavy that they can’t breathe. Some avalanches cover all the houses and villages along the way. Once an avalanche stops, the snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold.
What can we do to stay safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Never start climbing when the snow begins melting (融化), especially in spring. Avalanches may happen this season at any minute. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Keeping quiet in the mountains is also important. And always make sure you have the right tools and know how to use them before climbing snow mountains. Also, you’d better tell someone your plan before climbing, so they can help if needed.
61. Which picture shows an avalanche?
A. B. C. D.
62. What is the main cause of most avalanches?
A. Falling temperatures. B. Rising winds. C. Big earthquakes. D. People’s actions.
63. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The cause of avalanches. B. The types of avalanches.
C. The effect of avalanches. D. The speed of avalanches.
64. Which is the right way to keep safe?
A. Keep quiet when climbing snow mountains. B. Start climbing after the snowstorm right away.
C. Climb snow mountains in spring with useful tools. D. Buy expensive tools before climbing the mountains.
65. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To describe mountain life. B. To explain the form of snow.
C. To encourage mountain climbing. D. To warn about avalanche dangers.

Dear Tom,
How is it going? I’m writing to share you something about the school activity named “Protect Yourself and Prevent Disasters”. It was held on the playground last Friday.
First, we listened to a speech about how to avoid danger in floods and earthquakes. I know where to hide when the disasters come. Then we joined a practical training, our teachers taught us to use first-aid kits and showed us the correct escape route in an emergency. We also watched a short video about disaster prevention. It showed real disaster scenes and clear steps to protect ourselves
This activity taught me useful safety skills and made me realize the value of life. It’s important for everyone to learn how to protect themselves when disasters come.
Best wishes.
