I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, which totally affected my teenage years, But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life.
My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to adjust to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it impossible for me to carry on.
At that time, I didn't understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn't find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park — it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.
Other times, I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help, as I felt that there wasn't anyone who could help me out.
What turned my life around, however, was my discovery of street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.
My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would go on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn't have ever believed it.
Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there's always someone, or something, out there to help you.

Social conflicts, from policy debates to family disagreements, can easily develop into angry words and personal attacks. Such heated conflicts, however, seldom settle disagreements and can lead to worse results. A better approach to dealing with interpersonal disagreements is to apply features of wisdom, like humility (谦虚), diverse viewpoints and open-mindedness. But applying these elements of wisdom can be difficult, especially during conflicts. The trick, according to research published in the journal Psychological Science, is to train yourself in advance to reason about interpersonal conflicts in a wiser manner.
“People typically fail to reason wisely when facing social conflicts so we designed a way to help them,” said Igor Grossmann, director of the Wisdom and Culture Lab at the University of Waterloo, Canada. “Our basic idea is to train people to see situations from a more objective, third-person angle (角度). This approach enables people to recognize the limitations of their knowledge and the different ways the conflict may lead to, and consider and balance different viewpoints.”
According to the researchers, by changing the angle from the first person to the third person, a person is able to get a better understanding of his or her own knowledge and enjoy different views.
To test their assumption (假设), the researchers conducted two field experiments. Grossmann said, “Our research showed the effectiveness of the third- person diary writing for a change in wisdom compared to the first-person diary reflection, and indicated that the third- person self-reflection led to gradual change in wise reasoning about personally challenging interactions.” The data suggest that this increase in wise reasoning happened because the third-person self-reflection broadened people’s typically narrow self-focus. This research provides the evidence for training wise reasoning in daily life when people are dealing with challenging interactions.
28. Why is it significant to settle the social conflicts?
A. Conflicts may lead to failure.
B. Conflicts can result in a worse situation.
C. Conflicts can avoid one’s self-reflection.
D. Conflicts can push people to think differently.
29. What can help to reduce the conflicts according to the author?
A. Self-awareness. B. Agreed standard.
C. Broad viewpoints. D. Firm determination.
30. What can we learn from Grossmann’s findings?
A. Social conflicts can increase people’s reasoning ability.
B. First-person reflection improves the problem-solving skills.
C. Self-focus is helpful in dealing with interpersonal disagreements.
D. Third-person diary reflection can increase the ability to solve conflicts.
31. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Reflection Matters in Decreasing Disagreements
B. Social Conflicts Do Great Harm to Interpersonal Relationships
C. The Wisdom of Problem-solving Lies in Challenges
D. Training in Wise Reasoning Helps to Cope with Social Conflicts
D
When did you have a really deep conversation where you felt truly heard? Connections of this kind are completely necessary for people but they are not always easy to find. That’s why one woman decided to take listening to the streets. Her name is Traci Ruble, a therapist (治疗师) who is concerned that people today are experiencing loneliness and lack personal connections. She understands that with busy lives and demanding jobs, people are unable to make these connections.
On a spring day in 2015, Ruble and a small number of volunteers set up chairs on sidewalks in 12 locations around San Francisco and invited people passing by to sit for a few minutes and chat. This was the beginning of the nonprofit Sidewalk Talk. The mission is to create public spaces of connections for people. Today, the organization has more that 4,000 volunteers in 40 cities. These volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and receive training from the organization.
Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to speak and be listened to but it is not therapy. “Volunteers are not communicating as a therapist out there. They’re not there to solve someone’s problems. They’re there to practice being human,” Ruble said. According to Ruble, therapy is one-sided and therapists are taught to avoid self-disclosure (自我表露) but by “being human” volunteers could approach interactions with communication about their own life and by showing sympathy (同情) for the people they talk with.
Today, an increasing number of people experience loneliness, according to a report from Harvard University. In fact, 31 percent of all Americans feel serious loneliness including 61 percent of young adults. To deal with that, rebuilding community relationships is very important. While Sidewalk Talk will not solve the loneliness problem, these chats could help someone have a brighter day. Knowing that there are sympathetic people who are willing to fully listen and share people’s feelings could make all the difference to a lonely person.
32. What is the purpose of Sidewalk Talk?
A. To provide training for those volunteers.
B. To teach the passers-by how to communicate.
C. To offer public chances of personal conversations.
D. To help people relieve pressure at work.
33. How do the volunteers of Sidewalk Talk differ from therapists?
A. They provide non-professional therapy.
B. They prefer one-sided communication.
C. They are good at showing their success.
D. They express their experiences and feelings.
34. What can we infer about Sidewalk Talk from paragraph 4?
A. It makes people more sympathetic to others.
B. It offers a solution to the loneliness problem.
C. It plays a role in improving people’s feelings.
D. It has promoted community relationships.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A woman guiding others to lead an active life.
B. An organization taking listening to the streets.
C. Therapists setting up chairs on sidewalks.
D. Volunteers helping others learn how to talk.

【66题答案】
【答案】Dear Tony,
I’m delighted to receive your letter and discuss the phenomenon that students are addicted to watching short videos.
As we all know, short videos are quite popular nowadays. On one hand, they offer rich knowledge and let us relax after busy study. On the other hand, many students get addicted to them. It not only takes up plenty of study time but also does harm to our eyes and mental health.
Personally, I think students can watch short videos properly. We had better watch them only in free time and stay away from meaningless videos to make good use of our time.
Yours,
Li Hua
