Whether you’re having new purchases delivered to your dormitory, or searching for some place out of campus to store your things, BoxIt is always here to help. We store suitcases, cycles, sacks and stacks of other stuff in our secure sites. If you need packing materials, tell us and we’ll send them to you. You can upload photos of the things in each box to your own BoxIt account to remind yourself what is where, and then download our app to monitor your belongings as they move. When you’re ready, book the delivery of your boxes online. Just let us know what you need to be stored and we’ll send one of our staff to pick your things up, but remember that if the address we are delivering your boxes to is farther than 25 miles from where we picked them up, there is an additional charge. Collections are free from Monday to Friday if we collect between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Don’t leave any empty space in your box — this makes your box weaker and may damage the things inside, and not filling the box also means you need more boxes so it costs you more. And don’t put too much into your box — keep it under 25 kilos in weight. If you pack the following items in your boxes, we can’t be responsible for any damage to your things when we’re moving them: ·Knives and sharp objects ·Musical instruments in soft cases ·Food ·Antiques ·Pets or any other living creatures ·Mirrors or large glass items Make sure the driver can easily get into your place and that you are at your address for the full duration of the collection time. 26. To have items delivered by BoxIt, one needs to ________. A. order online B. download its app C. buy boxes from BoxIt D. send photos of the stuff to BoxIt 27. Customers are advised to ________. A. fill the box up B. prepare extra boxes C. wrap up sharp objects D. book service on weekends 28. What can we learn about BoxIt? A. It will check the items in the boxes. B. Its delivery supports remote tracking. C. Its service is intended for university staff. D. It can collect items in the absence of the owner. B I had no idea it was possible to sweat so heavily without engaging in any physical activity. I wasn’t standing at the open door of a plane thousands of feet in the air, ready to jump out into the wild, blue sky. Rather, I was simply sitting on my bed, wearing my most comfortable clothes, and waiting to hit the “Enter classroom” button on my computer. I had signed up for an online language lesson with a Portuguese language tutor. For the past few months, I had been studying the language and I knew video chat was the next best option. As I clicked the button, a friendly face popped up on the screen in front of me. At that moment, my mind froze. Feeling my nervousness, my tutor said something I still remember today, “Learning a new language is like showing your weakness to the world. It can be uncomfortable.” The ice was officially broken. As I’ve progressed along on my language journey, I often think back to her insight. She is right. We take as a given the power to express ourselves freely, and when that power is taken away, we are brought to a place of weakness. Yet if we keep pushing forward despite this weakness, we will unlock a wealth of valuable gains. My three-year-old son has big feelings but has insufficient vocabulary to properly express himself. When I started learning Portuguese, I realized how difficult it must be for him to be understood in the adult world around him. I’m a better parent now. When my husband and I finally visited Portugal and ordered food in Portuguese at a small shop, the server thanked us for taking time to learn their language. Learning Portuguese taught me that attempting to learn someone else’s language shows respect not only for their homeland but for the people themselves. Taking on the challenge of Portuguese has also awakened a fire within me. If you had told me a year ago that I would be taking a writing course, competing in competitions at my gym, or learning about car maintenance, I truly wouldn’t have believed it. Now I deeply believe that challenging yourself can be rewarding in ways you will never know unless you attempt it. 29. What was the author doing in Paragraph 1? A. Working out at home. B. Taking an entrance exam. C. Preparing herself for a class. D. Signing up for a language club. 30. Hearing the tutor’s words, the author felt ________. A. shocked B. defensive C. concerned D. relieved 31. After learning Portuguese, the author ________. A. showed competitive advantages B. started to try Portuguese cuisine C. developed a passion for travelling D. became an understanding mother 32. What can we learn from the passage? A. It is never too late to learn something new. B. Taking on challenges may bring perfection. C. Leaving the comfort zone offers new visions of life. D. Language learning helps clear up misunderstandings. C On 24 May 2000, a group of mathematicians took to a stage in Paris to set some problems. These were the seven Millennium Problems, the hardest mathematical puzzles then known. The exercise was organized by the Clay Mathematics Institute, a nonprofit that promised anyone who could solve one would be rewarded with a $1 million prize. Twenty-five years later, how have mathematicians got on? Grigori Perelman proved the Poincaré conjecture, the only Millennium Problem to fall so far. A conjecture in maths is a statement thought to be true but not yet proven. But what about the six that remain? In fact, tools are everything for mathematicians. That is why Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz each developed calculus (微积分) in the late 17th century. Back then, there was no technique for describing properties that change over time or space. But once the right tool is in the right hands, progress is almost inevitable: with calculus, Newton performed mathematical miracles such as describing the motion of the planets under gravity. Now there is a new tool that might make quite a difference. “Machine learning is quickly developing as another tool in the toolbox,” says Dan Freed at Harvard University. But, he adds, “Some of the Millennium Problems might be less amenable to using machine learning.” That is because AI relies on being fed lots of data. In many fields, large volumes of useful data simply don’t exist. Even in the absence of large datasets, there might still be scope for AI to dig into complicated mathematical arguments. “One of the interesting things about these millennium challenges is that the problems can be simple enough for us to pose, but might have a complexity to the proof that is beyond the human mind to navigate,” says Marcus du Sautoy at the University of Oxford. AI might have the required potential to find buried links, which mathematicians can then pick up and work with. “Over the next decade, we might see some interesting new conjectures emerging that we wouldn’t have been able to see without the use of this tool,” he says. Just as Galileo was able to see more of the heavens using a telescope, AI could give a deeper view of numbers. Whether the Clay Mathematics Institute would accept an AI-led solution to one of its problems depends on mathematicians’ willingness to see it as solved. In 2000, when the prizes were announced, Alain Connes at the College de France in Paris, said the seven problems were “totally inaccessible to computers”. But with mathematicians now open to working with AI, that seems like one more conjecture that might fall. 33. What can be inferred about the tools in maths? A. They lose value when a conjecture is proven. B. They are more likely to emerge with rewards. C. They serve as mathematicians’ ultimate pursuit. D. They are what it takes to make progress in maths. 34. What does the phrase “amenable to” underlined in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. Resistant to. B. Independent of. C. Responsive to. D. Tolerant of. 35. What can we learn from this passage? A. The author agrees with Dan on AI’s role in maths. B. AI can make up for the limitations of human mind. C. AI is bound to solve the rest Millennium Problems. D. Mathematicians’ acceptance of AI is hard to predict. D Side-blotched lizards (侧斑蜥蜴) have a colorful set of mating strategies. Some males, with orange throats, are large and fight their way to a group of mates. Others, with blue throats, are a bit smaller and bond with just a single female. And then there is a third type. These lizards, which have yellow throats, look very similar to females. In a rock-paper-scissors-type mating strategy, the big orange ones can chase off the medium blue ones, who, in turn, can keep a close eye on their single mate. The yellow ones, however, sometimes sneak into (溜进) the big males’ group of mates. The lizards face a trade-off between abundance and the cost of confirmation. It is a trade-off that is increasingly of concern to humans, too. The cost of producing text, video or audio has declined; doing so now means just a few words on a chatbot rather than hours of effort. As a consequence, roughly half of articles published on the internet last year were AI-generated. How can internet users distinguish an article by a genuine but little-known news website from outright misinformation? Market participants often rely on “costly signals” to make such choices. An employer looking for a new hire, say, may seek applicants with a degree that took effort and a certain amount of skill, which indicates they might bring the same qualities to their work. The certificate allows employers to distinguish between good and bad applicants — creating what economists call a “separating equilibrium” and enabling transactions between willing participants. During an earlier information age, newspaper branding provided a costly signal. In what was, in game-theoretic terms, a “reputation game” newspapers would, issue by issue, reveal exactly how focused on the truth they were. Repeated interactions with a reader, when they were deciding which paper to purchase, constituted a separating equilibrium. Content farms, websites that copied reputable news pages but with made-up stories, however, can “sneak into” these brands like the yellow lizards. Thus the “separating equilibrium” is devolving into a “pooling equilibrium”, in which there is no way of telling between one type of creation and another. The problem with a “pooling equilibrium”, as George Akerlof put it in a Nobel-prizewinning paper, is that “Dishonest dealings tend to drive honest dealings out of the market.” Without a way to tell good from bad, buyers treat everything as bad. Among side-blotched lizards, the rock-paper-scissors nature of the lizards’ mating strategies means that if any of the colours becomes too common, one of the other types receives an advantage. Optimistically, then, an outpouring in the productivity of misinformation generators may provide a similar advantage to the journalistic equivalent of the blue-throated lizards — publications that jealously guard their reputation for truth-telling. 36. Why does the author mention the example of side-blotched lizards in Paragraph 1? A. To share a popular trend. B. To criticize a costly trade-off. C. To reveal a disturbing issue. D. To introduce a mating strategy. 37. According to the passage, which of the following is an example of separating equilibrium? A. Socially-responsible and profit-driven firms spend equally on charity. B. We tend to learn a common language regardless of native tongue. C. The expense of acquiring education is similar across ability types. D. Firms sustain high-input advertising campaigns to reflect quality. 38. Which of the following would the author agree with? A. Content farms spare no efforts to focus on the truth. B. Readers can tell facts from fiction through costly signals. C. Publications lose competitiveness in maintaining reputation. D. The cost of confirming information genuineness has dropped. 39. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Will Publications Survive in the Flood of Misinformation? B. Costly Signals: Trade-off Between Real and Made-up C. Misinformation: Threat to Newspapers’ Reputation D. Has Internet Supercharged Misinformation? Picture a table surrounded by curious minds, each desiring to uncover the mysteries of the universe, as they start a journey of intellectual exploration through the art of challenging questions. The scene summarizes the essence of intellectual questions. ____40____ They’re the kind of questions that make you frown, scratch your head, and maybe even lose a little sleep. ____41____ For instance, as AI systems become increasingly complex, we’re forced to deal with some pretty mind-bending questions, like “Will AI ever achieve true consciousness?” or “Could it one day surpass human intelligence?” Environmental sustainability presents another set of urgent scientific questions: “How can we balance economic growth with environmental protection? Could we engineer our way out of a climate disaster?” Similarly, space exploration has fascinated humans for centuries. ____42____ We may wonder: “Could we one day settle on other planets?” You might be wondering: “Why bother with all these heavy questions? Can’t we just enjoy a nice, light conversation about the weather?” Well, sure, we could. But where’s the fun in that? Asking intellectual questions isn’t just a way to sound smart at dinner parties. When we engage with intellectual questions, we’re developing critical thinking skills, enhancing our ability to analyze complex issues, and broadening our understanding of the world. ____43____ And the benefits go beyond personal development. Engaging in intellectual questions can promote understanding. When we struggle with difficult questions together, we learn to appreciate different viewpoints, to challenge our own assumptions, and to find common ground even in disagreement. ____44____ Didn’t many of the world’s greatest discoveries and inventions start with someone asking “What if?” or “Why not?” So next time you find yourself in a conversation, don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper, to ask the big questions, and to challenge assumptions. Your brain and the world will thank you for it. A. Intellectual questions arise accordingly. B. It’s like going to the gym, but for your brain. C. Intellectual questions are not just surface-level inquiries. D. Moreover, raising big questions drives innovation and progress. E. In a world full of challenges, they are more important than ever. F. As we explore further, the questions touch on the very fabric of our society. G. The questions that unlock deep insights and meaningful connections lie in every corner. Fast fashion has made it easy for consumers to purchase new clothing frequently and at low cost. But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. This is why craftsmanship is coming back. One visible expression of this shift is the renewed interest in repairing garments. From patching worn spots to adding personal embroidery (刺绣), people are doing it for fun or making their own style. With visible mending, they are not hiding the damage, but showing the story. This hands-on engagement fosters a deeper connection between individuals and their clothing. People no longer just want to wear clothes — they want to be part of them. The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. Techniques and styles once dismissed as outdated are now increasingly valued for their detail, history, and authenticity. In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. You see them in handmade jackets and detailed weaving. Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. Fast fashion generates enormous waste and environmental harm, while handcrafted pieces frequently use natural and recycled materials. Many are made to order, eliminating excess production, and most can be repaired and passed down rather than thrown away. Choosing handmade is gentler on the planet and better to the people making the clothes. While big retailers still push out the most clothes, smaller brands are changing the game — not by volume, but by values. They focus on quality over quantity, working with skilled local makers and using materials that last. To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real. In a world full of quick, disposable goods, the comeback of craftsmanship represents not a passing trend, but a fundamental shift toward meaning, responsibility, and lasting value in fashion. 45. What kind of clothes are many people looking for today? __________________________________________________________________________ 46. Apart from personal interest, what other factors contribute to the comeback of craftsmanship? __________________________________________________________________________ 47. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity. __________________________________________________________________________ 48. How will you apply craftsmanship in another field besides fashion? (In about 40 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 第二节 (20分) 49. Dear Jim, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 北京一六一中学2025 — 2026学年度第二学期热身阶段测试 高三英语试卷 考 生 须 知 1. When I was fifteen, my mum was preparing a community fashion design competition. 29. C 30. D 31. D 32. D 34. C 35. 根据第三段中“In fact, tools are everything for mathematicians. That is why Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz each developed calculus (微积分) in the late 17th century. Back then, there was no technique for describing properties that change over time or space. But once the right tool is in the right hands, progress is almost inevitable( 事实上,工具对于数学家来说至关重要。这就是为什么艾萨克·牛顿和戈特弗里德·威廉·莱布尼茨在 17 世纪末各自发展了微积分。当时,还没有一种技术可以描述随时间或空间变化的属性。但一旦合适的工具落入合适的人手中,进步几乎是必然的)”可推知,工具是数学领域取得进步的必要条件。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句后给出了解释“That is because AI relies on being fed lots of data. In many fields, large volumes of useful data simply don’t exist.( 这是因为人工智能需要大量的数据作为输入。在许多领域,有用的数据量根本就不存在)”由此可知,部分千禧年难题不适合用机器学习解决,即对机器学习方法“响应不佳”。amenable to意为“易受……影响的;适合……的”,与C选项responsive to“对……有反应的、适用的”语义最接近。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“Even in the absence of large datasets, there might still be scope for AI to dig into complicated mathematical arguments. “One of the interesting things about these millennium challenges is that the problems can be simple enough for us to pose, but might have a complexity to the proof that is beyond the human mind to navigate,” says Marcus du Sautoy at the University of Oxford. 【答案】36. C 37. D 38. B 39. B 【解析】 【导语】本文以侧斑蜥蜴的博弈生存策略为引,阐释网络时代虚假信息泛滥,真假信息难以区分的社会问题。 【36题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“In a rock-paper-scissors-type mating strategy, the big orange ones can chase off the medium blue ones, who, in turn, can keep a close eye on their single mate. The yellow ones, however, sometimes sneak into (溜进) the big males’ group of mates.(在一种石头剪刀布式的交配策略中,体型大的橙色喉部蜥蜴可以赶走中等体型的蓝色喉部蜥蜴,而蓝色喉部蜥蜴能够密切守护自己唯一的配偶。然而黄色喉部蜥蜴有时会溜进大型雄性蜥蜴的配偶群中)”以及第二段“The lizards face a trade-off between abundance and the cost of confirmation. It is a trade-off that is increasingly of concern to humans, too.(这些蜥蜴面临着数量与验证成本之间的权衡,这也是人类愈发关注的一种权衡)”可知,作者列举蜥蜴例子,是为了引出后文人类社会真假信息混杂的严峻问题。 【37题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Market participants often rely on “costly signals” to make such choices. ...The certificate allows employers to distinguish between good and bad applicants — creating what economists call a “separating equilibrium” and enabling transactions between willing participants.(市场参与者通常依靠“高成本信号”做出此类选择……证书让雇主区分优劣求职者,形成经济学家所说的“分离均衡”)”可知,分离均衡指“依靠高成本投入区分优劣、辨别真伪”。D选项“企业投入高成本广告彰显品质”符合该定义。 【38题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Market participants often rely on “costly signals” to make such choices. An employer looking for a new hire, say, may seek applicants with a degree that took effort and a certain amount of skill, which indicates they might bring the same qualities to their work. (市场参与者往往依靠高成本信号做出这类选择。例如,招聘员工的雇主会寻找付出努力、具备一定技能才获得学位的求职者,这表明他们会将同等品质带入工作中)”可知,作者认可读者能够借助高成本信号分辨事实与虚假内容。 【39题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第二段中“The lizards face a trade-off between abundance and the cost of confirmation. It is a trade-off that is increasingly of concern to humans, too.(这些蜥蜴面临着数量与核验成本之间的权衡,这也是人类愈发关注的一种权衡)”以及第三段中“Market participants often rely on “costly signals” to make such choices.(市场参与者往往依靠高成本信号来做出这类判断)”可知,文章以蜥蜴生存策略作类比,围绕高成本信号展开,探讨真实信息与虚假信息之间的博弈权衡,B项“高成本信号:真实信息与虚假信息间的权衡”贴合全文核心主旨,适合作标题。故选 B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Picture a table surrounded by curious minds, each desiring to uncover the mysteries of the universe, as they start a journey of intellectual exploration through the art of challenging questions. 【答案】40. C 41. G 42. A 43. (In about 40 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】45. Many people today are looking for clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. / Garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. 46. A broader cultural reevaluation and sustainability. 47. Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity. According to the passage, Many smaller brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to avoid waste. 48. I will apply craftsmanship in home decoration. I’ll pick natural materials like bamboo and stone. Then, I’ll use hand-carving and weaving techniques to make unique decorations, adding a natural and artistic touch to my home. 【解析】 【导语】文章阐述匠心工艺回归时尚的原因、表现及深远意义。 【45题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第一段中“But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. (但如今许多人正在寻找更好的东西:耐穿的、用心制作的、承载真正意义的衣服。)”以及第三段中“In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. (与快时尚推崇的千篇一律不同,如今许多消费者转而选择承载文化底蕴、家族故事与传统精湛工艺的服饰。)”可知,如今许多人正在寻找耐穿、用心制作且具有真正意义的衣服,或者寻找承载文化、家庭故事和传统技艺的服装。 【46题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第三段中“The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. (对手工艺的欣赏不仅限于个人实践,还扩展到对时尚传统的更广泛的文化重新评估。)”以及第四段中“Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. (可持续性是这一复兴的另一个主要驱动因素。)”可知,除了个人兴趣,更广泛的文化重新评估和可持续性也是促进手工艺回归的因素。 【47题详解】 考查细节理解。句意:许多小型时尚品牌放慢生产速度,甚至提供预订服务是为了获得人气。根据第四段中“To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real. (为了避免浪费,它们中的许多品牌放慢了生产速度,不再盲目追逐潮流,甚至提供预订服务——这种做法正越来越受欢迎,因为它让人们能够穿上真正有意义的衣物。)”可知,小型品牌这样做的主要目的是为了避免浪费,而不是为了获得人气。因此原句中的“to gain popularity”是错误的,应改为“to avoid waste”。 Dear Jim, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Jim, I’m glad to hear you’re joining the WHO’s initiative. Here are my suggestions. First, we can promote daily physical activities like jogging or group exercises. Regular exercise strengthens our bodies and boosts mental health, which is crucial for teenagers facing study pressure. Second, we should advocate for balanced diets. Many of us rely on junk food, but nutritious meals provide the energy we need to stay focused and healthy. Third, let’s emphasize the importance of emotional sharing. Talking to friends or family when we feel stressed helps us cope better and builds stronger connections. These ideas are practical and easy for teenagers to follow. I hope they help you! Yours, Li Hua 【解析】 【导语】题目要求考生以李华身份给Jim回复邮件,就世卫组织健康倡议提建议并说明理由。 【详解】1.词汇积累 高兴的:glad → delighted 提倡,支持:advocate for → support 增强,提升:boost → enhance 建议:suggestion → proposal 2.句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:These ideas are practical and easy for teenagers to follow. 拓展句:These ideas, which are practical and easy for teenagers to follow, can be effectively integrated into daily routines. 【点睛】[高分句型1] Regular exercise strengthens our bodies and boosts mental health, which is crucial for teenagers facing study pressure. (运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] Talking to friends or family when we feel stressed helps us cope better and builds stronger connections. (运用了when引导的时间状语从句和动名词作主语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
