Urgent: Special Summer Outdoor Protection Notice
To many, sun hats are just casual daily wear...
But When Outside, This Hat May Keep You Safe from Heat Harm!
Lots of people suffer from sudden sunstroke when staying outdoors under strong summer sunlight. Uncomfortable heat injuries happen frequently. However, most people keep working and walking outdoors without proper protection against burning sunshine.
Not all sun hats are of the same quality. Guarding your head from heat is extremely important. With various beautiful and fashionable hat designs on the market, people easily ignore the most important part — the protective lining. Therefore, we have studied related data and adopted advanced thermal insulation (隔热) technology.
It comes from professional climate science research. Many ordinary sun hats only block sunlight weakly and cannot cut down harmful heat radiation. Now, independent research from environmental scientists has developed revolutionary heat-resistant technology to prevent high-temperature harm. This excellent material design was inspired by desert animals with natural heat resistance. This creation is now called Cool Guard®.
The only outdoor hat technology is recognized by Global Climate Protection Association for heat isolation and sun protection. Its double-layer insulation structure blocks 99.8% of burning sunlight and reduces surface temperature greatly, with extra protection against ultraviolet rays (紫外线).
Top-quality daily supplies: Buy one, get one FREE! Your satisfaction is fully guaranteed. If you are not satisfied with Cool Guard® hats, just return one pair within 30 days for a complete refund. The other hat is free for you forever.

It all started when she was young. Dr. Mahalaxmi Iyer always knew she wanted to be a doctor. And once she became a doctor, she felt her work should be the kind that would leave a mark. Though her career as a doctor certainly helped others, within 10 months, she lost both her parents when she was in her mid-30s, which brought a sinking feeling — she had not been able to do enough for them.
The idea that looking after other seniors would help ease the sorrow of her own losses gave Iyer a renewed focus. She sold her home, and invested all her life’s savings to start Balaji Healthcare, a multi-speciality hospital and elder care home. The 100-bed facility that opened its doors in 2011 with four patients has grown to accommodate 74 residents. Many of them have illnesses which require full-time, expert care that families are unable to provide. Together with her staff, Iyer takes care of the residents’ daily healthcare needs, and other specialists visit to aid treatment.
“I faced many barriers. But there are many people who will also offer support,” Iyer says, referring to the financial troubles she faced while setting up the facility. The difficulties only eased by 2015 when well-wishers stepped up to support the initiative.
It doesn’t run like a charity, Iyer stresses, but doesn’t charge too much either, often footing additional medical bills itself before charging the families. The model works. And we provide patients with a warm, reliable home.
Today, a decade after the facility was set up, Iyer takes great comfort in the fact that it isn’t just providing a sense of security to residents and their families but also to the staff, most of whom are from neighbouring villages and largely female benefiting from it. Many of them are now able to afford two-wheelers, their own house, and better education for their children.
4. What motivated Iyer to start Balaji Healthcare?
A. To earn more money for her family. B. To provide free medical care for the poor.
C. To relieve the sorrow of losing her parents. D. To fulfill her childhood dream of being a doctor.
5. How does the financial model of Balaji Healthcare work?
A. It operates as a pure charity. B. It charges high fees to cover all costs.
C. It balances affordability and sustainability. D. It relies entirely on donations from well-wishers.
6. What can we learn about the facility from the last paragraph?
A. It secures a comfortable life for Iyer.
B. Its staff are provided with an accommodation.
C. It has contributed to local women economically.
D. Its residents are rarely from neighbouring villages.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. Struggling to Live a Meaning Life
B. The Challenges of Starting a Hospital
C. The Importance of Elder Care in Modern Society
D. Turnıng Personal Loss into a Mission to Help Others
C 5. C 6. C 7. D

根据第四段中“It doesn’t run like a charity, Iyer stresses, but doesn’t charge too much either, often footing additional medical bills itself before charging the families. The model works.(Iyer强调,它不是作为慈善机构运营,但收费也不高,通常在向家属收费之前会自行承担额外的医疗费用。这种模式是可行的)”可知,该机构的财务模式既不过分收费,也不完全依赖慈善,平衡了可负担性和可持续性。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Today, a decade after the facility was set up, Iyer takes great comfort in the fact that it isn’t just providing a sense of security to residents and their families but also to the staff, most of whom are from neighbouring villages and largely female benefiting from it. Many of them are now able to afford two-wheelers, their own house, and better education for their children.(如今,在该机构成立十年后,Iyer感到非常欣慰,因为它不仅为居民及其家属,也为员工提供了安全感,其中大多数员工来自邻近村庄,主要是女性,她们从中受益。她们中的许多人现在买得起两轮车、拥有了自己的房子,并能让孩子接受更好的教育)”可知,该机构在经济上帮助了当地女性。

A world built around self-checkouts, GPS, delivery apps, and screens might be quietly shrinking the amount of real conversation we have each day. A new study suggests that daily spoken word counts have been falling for years.
Matthias Mehl, a psychology professor at the University of Arizona who studies everyday communication, didn’t even set out to find this trend. It showed up when Mehl and his colleagues tried to replicate (复制) his famous 2007 science paper on how much men and women talk. The researchers pulled word counts from 22 different studies conducted between 2005 and 2019 for entirely different purposes, involving around 2,200 people.
“My collaborator, Valeria Pfeifer, came to me with the word counts from the replication analyses,” Mehl said. “I told her there had to be a mistake. But she rechecked everything, and the number held.”
One reason why this study is hard to dismiss is the way the data were collected. It’s not like the researchers were cherry-picking “quiet people” samples. “Participants had no idea their word counts would ever be analyzed this way, which rules out any concern that people adjusted their behavior to fit an assumption,” Mehl said.
“When we plotted the daily spoken word counts against the year each study was collected, we found a consistent decline,” Mehl explained. “Every year, the estimate of daily spoken words dropped by 338.”
It’s possible that total word output hasn’t declined at all — it may even have risen — if you count everything people type. But Mehl argues that spoken conversation isn’t just word count — it carries tone, timing, awkward pauses, laughter, and warmth — the stuff that gives social life its texture (质感). “These 338 words are not one long conversation we stopped having. They are spread across small moments throughout the day — asking a cashier for help, getting directions from a stranger, and chatting with a neighbor. Those moments add up, and their absence does, too,” Mehl said.
In other words, this research isn’t just about talk. It’s about what talk represents: small social contact, low-stakes warmth, and the quiet glue that holds everyday community together.
8. What is Mehl’s initial reaction to the word counts?
A. He acknowledged them. B. He expressed his doubt.
C. He had another check in person. D. He didn’t take them seriously.
9. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. Why the data are reliable. B. The steps of data collection.
C. Why participants behaved naturally. D. The importance of selecting proper samples.
10. Which of the following statements does Mehl probably agree with?
A. Word counts fail to reflect life quality. B. Small talk usually occurs among strangers.
C. Spoken conversation is crucial in social life. D. Talk and written words are equally declining.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To warn of the decline in real conversation. B. To analyze the impact of technology on talk.
C. To explain how to increase daily communication. D. To recommend a method for language study.
B 9. A 10. C 11. A
根据第三段“I told her there had to be a mistake.(我告诉她一定是哪里出错了)”可知,Mehl最初质疑数据的准确性。
根据第四段“One reason why this study is hard to dismiss is the way the data were collected. It’s not like the researchers were cherry-picking “quiet people” samples. “Participants had no idea their word counts would ever be analyzed this way, which rules out any concern that people adjusted their behavior to fit an assumption,” Mehl said.(这项研究之所以难以被否定,还有一个原因就是其数据的收集方式。这与研究人员刻意挑选“安静的人”样本的情况完全不同。“参与者根本不知道自己的话语次数会以这种方式进行分析,这就排除了人们会为了符合某种假设而改变自身行为的可能性,”梅尔说道)”可知,本段聚焦于数据为何可靠。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“But Mehl argues that spoken conversation isn’t just word count — it carries tone, timing, awkward pauses, laughter, and warmth — the stuff that gives social life its texture (质感).(但梅尔认为,口语交流不仅仅是字数的多少——它还包含语气、节奏、尴尬的停顿、笑声以及温暖的情感——正是这些元素赋予了社交生活其独特的质感)”可知,Mehl明确强调口语交流中的语气、停顿、笑声、温暖等元素赋予社会生活以质感。
根据第一段“A world built around self-checkouts, GPS, delivery apps, and screens might be quietly shrinking the amount of real conversation we have each day. A new study suggests that daily spoken word counts have been falling for years.(一个以自助结账、全球定位系统、配送应用程序和屏幕为特征的世界,或许正在悄然减少我们每天进行的真正交流的次数。一项新的研究表明,人们的日常口语交流量多年来一直在下降)”,最后一段“In other words, this research isn’t just about talk. It’s about what talk represents: small social contact, low-stakes warmth, and the quiet glue that holds everyday community together.(换句话说,这项研究并非仅仅停留在讨论层面。它探讨的是这些讨论所代表的意义:微小的社交互动、低风险的温暖氛围,以及维系日常社区团结的那份默默的力量)”以及文章开篇指出科技可能减少真实对话,中间用研究数据证明口语词数逐年下降(每年减少338词),结尾强调这些消失的对话是维系社区关系的“粘合剂”——整体是警示语气。即作者撰写这篇文章的目的是警示现实交流正在逐渐减少。
D
I have a lot of great friends, but I don’t belong to many other social groups. I guess my thought is that spreading myself thin that way might be bad for my well-being. New research suggests otherwise. A study in Britain from The Society for Personality and Social Psychology has found that people who belong to more groups may be happier and healthier than those who don’t.
In this study, Clifford Stevenson of Nottingham Trent University in England and his colleagues got data from almost 6,000 people participating in an ongoing study called the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), which looks at how different aspects of a person’s life experience affect their well-being over time.
Participants self-reported on many things, including their health and well-being, how generally lonely they were, and how many different types of groups they belonged to. These could include community sports teams, neighborhood associations, parent-teacher associations, charities, or book clubs and so on.
After analyzing the results, Stevenson and his team found that people who belonged to more diverse groups at one point in time felt less lonely and had greater well-being four years later. This was true even after taking into account factors like age and gender, as well as how lonely or troubled they were at the beginning of the study. This suggests that joining more varied groups can help people feel better above and beyond how many groups they belong to.
This study adds to a growing scientific literature tying group membership to well-being, but also has practical implications. People in many communities around the world are suffering from higher levels of loneliness, and health care workers and others are looking for solutions.
With that in mind, there is reason to consider applying this finding more broadly. If we know that greater group diversity is useful at both a community and personal level, we can perhaps use that information to help improve conditions for people no matter where they live.
12. What does the underlined phrase “spreading myself thin” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Being too thin to keep healthy.
B. Wasting too much time on friends.
C. Joining too many groups carelessly.
D. Having no time to make new friends.
13. Why does the author mention ELSA in the passage?
A. To show the study’s reliability.
B. To introduce a new research method.
C. To prove its authority in aging research.
D. To explain its difference from the main study.
14. What can we learn from Stevenson’s study?
A. ELSA focuses on people’s physical health only.
B. Age and gender affect the study results greatly.
C. Diverse group membership helps reduce loneliness.
D. The more groups people join, the happier they are.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Choose the Right Book Club B. Diverse Group Ties Boosting Well-being
C. The Secret to Staying Young and Energetic D. Why Loneliness Is Growing in Modern Society
C 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据第一段“I have a lot of great friends, but I don’t belong to many other social groups. I guess my thought is that spreading myself thin that way might be bad for my well-being. (我有很多好朋友,但我没有加入很多其他社交团体。我认为那样spreading myself thin会不利于我的身心健康。)”可知,作者不愿加入过多社团,担心精力分散,“spreading myself thin”指代随意加入过多社团分散精力。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In this study, Clifford Stevenson of Nottingham Trent University in England and his colleagues got data from almost 6,000 people participating in an ongoing study called the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), which looks at how different aspects of a person’s life experience affect their well-being over time.
根据第四段“After analyzing the results, Stevenson and his team found that people who belonged to more diverse groups at one point in time felt less lonely and had greater well-being four years later. (在分析结果后,史蒂文森和他的团队发现,在某个时间点属于更多不同群体的人在四年后感觉不那么孤独,幸福感也更高。)”可知,多样化的社团参与有助于减少孤独感。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,全文核心围绕多样化的社交团体关系能够提升幸福感、改善身心状态展开论述,B选项精准概括全文主旨,适合用作标题。

Mrs. Henderson’s neat rose garden was the pride of the neighborhood, and she took great care to maintain it. Next door, Mr. Patel and his family moved in six months ago, bringing with them a love for gardening that Mrs. Henderson initially appreciated.
One day, Mrs. Henderson noticed Mr. Patel’s young son, Aryan, playing near the fence that separated their properties. She watched as the little kid reached through the fence and picked a few rosebuds (玫瑰花蕾) from her roses. Mrs. Henderson’s heart sank. These roses were special —they had been planted by her late husband.
Without thinking, she opened the window and shouted, “Put that back, young man! Those are my roses!”
Aryan was frightened, dropping the rosebuds and bursting into tears. Mrs. Henderson felt a bit of guilt but remained firm. “Go tell your father to keep his son out of my garden!”
Mr. Patel heard the noise and came over. He turned to Mrs. Henderson. “What’s the matter, Mrs. Henderson?”
“He took my roses!” Mrs. Henderson pointed to the rosebuds. “You need to teach your child some respect.”
Mr. Patel’s expression hardened. “I’ll handle my son, but a child’s curiosity is natural.”
Mrs. Henderson crossed her arms. “Natural or not, it’s my property. If you can’t control your child, maybe you shouldn’t have moved here.”
The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving. Mr. Patel’s face turned red with anger. “You're being unreasonable. I’ll make sure Aryan stays away, but I won’t tolerate your cruelty.”
With that, he walked away, Aryan still weeping in his arms. Mrs. Henderson closed the window, feeling a mix of regret and firmness. She knew she had overreacted, but the thought of her roses being damaged was too much to bear.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep.

Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep. Inside was a beautifully crafted wooden plate, marked with the words “Sorry for the trouble” and some fresh rosebuds. A note attached read: “Mrs. Henderson, I hope this makes up for yesterday. Aryan and I want to be good neighbors. — Mr. Patel.” Mrs. Henderson’s heart softened. She had been so focused on her roses that she had forgotten the bigger picture — community and understanding. That afternoon, she went next door with a plate of freshly baked cookies.
Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson smiled. “I brought this as a peace offering. I apologize for yesterday. I shouldn’t have spoken like that.” Mr. Patel responded, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” They decided to find a way to share the garden without any misunderstandings. Mrs. Henderson would plant roses along the fence, while Mr. Patel could plant as he wished on his side. Mrs. Henderson realized fences were meant to separate, but gardens and neighbors were meant to bring people together. The roses were a bridge, not a barrier.

C
