Being one of the most popular pets,it is easy to know when house cats are hungry. But at
other times, still they seem strange to many people. Now,researchers in Japan say that the
famously quiet creatures may match their housemates with the names they are called. They may
even associate names with humans,too.
The researchers studied cats living in homes with cats living in cat cafes, usually in larger
groups. Each cat was shown a picture of a cat they know while right and wrong names were called.
When the name did not match the cat they were looking at,house cats looked longer. This shows
that the cats did not get what they expected. In other words, they felt puzzled.
Cats that live in cat cafes did not act the same way.The researchers suggest this is because
cafe cats are called many different names. There is less chance for the cats to hear one name again
and again, and then to learn it.
The researchers also tried to find out if cats know human names. The results were not as clear,
but at least it seems like they connect names with faces after hearing them enough. That means
cats that had lived with humans longer seemed better at connecting faces with names.
4.What does the underlined word "associate"mean in paragraph 1?
A.connect
B.understand
C.remember
5.Why did the house cats look at the picture for a longer time?
A.Because they were very interested in the picture.
B.Because the name called did not match the picture.
C.Because they were trying to remember the cat in the picture.
6.Where could cats get different kinds of names?
A.At home.
B.In groups.
C.In cafes.
/Which cats may did better in connecting human faces with names?
A.A cat live with an old woman for 10 years.
B.A cat live with a British family for 8 years.
C.A cat live with a couple for 6 years.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again.Every morning,I noticed fresh air coming
into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top.I would go out and see the
sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo.He invited me and my friends to go hunting with
him in the forests of Crescent Island.Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a
chance to run away. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day,I asked him why he was so
interested in Crescent Island."I thought you preferred the sea."
"I do,"replied the Captain,"But these forests are under the sea."During breakfast,he
explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to
stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries ()
When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip,he decided not to come
at all.Conseil and I put on our diving suit, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men.We
stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened.
We went through it,and we were on the sea floor. It was an amazing experience. We were about
ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us.Everything looked very colourful.
We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish and seaweed ()
Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area.We were
going deeper and deeper.
As we were a hundred meters under the water,we could still see quite well.Captain Nemo
stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The "trees"there were giant
seaweed, and all their branches were vertical )We could not stop looking at them.Fish
swam around the branches like birds in a forest.Small bushes grew under the large seaweed trees.
Three hours later,we lay down to rest.I was not hungry, but very sleepy. We all slept and when
we woke up,we explored further.

Plains wanderers are small, rare birds that live in grasslands.Unlike most birds, female plains
wanderers are larger and stronger than males.Females take the lead in protecting their nests and
babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs to keep them warm.These-birds
are hard to find because their feathers blend into the grass, making them look like part of the
landscape.Sadly, their numbers have been dropping because people are taking over their
grassland homes for farms and cities.
To save them, scientists are using AI.The key is the birds'calls.Mother wanderers make soft
sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI
can hear them clearly.Scientists put microphones in the grasslands to record sounds all day and
night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program. The AI learns to tell the
wanderers'calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps
烟
scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.
"AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them,"says Dr.Lee,who leads the project.
"We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places."Once, the AI
helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds.Without Al,they might not have found
破
it.Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a
powerful tool in saving wildlife.

Every day,it seems,a new tool helps me run farther and faster, sleep longer,or keep my heart
healthy.16
长
Maybe some of them really help, but I still decided to sell all my sports tools a few months ago.
17 Soon after,I started to train for a long race the old way, without anything on my
wrist telling me how fast I ran or my heart rate.As it turned out, running without all that
information was a great pleasure.
K
In the past, whenever I ran slower than my watch said I should,I'd push myself to go faster,
even if my body didn't want to.18
Many times, when I looked at my notes after key runs,I was shocked to see real
progress-running much faster than I thought I could. If I'd seen them on the tool during the run,
I would have slowed down. But because I didn't know them,I just kept running.
数
19 Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well,I can go out and run
without worrying about whether it has enough power.
So,what's the lesson here?We could easily use writing, studying,or anything else instead of
running. No matter what it is,the more time we spend worrying about how to get better at
和
something, the more our results are influenced.20
A.But this time,I ran the way I liked.
B.It makes me a“better me,”or so people say.
C.I decided to buy a new watch to record my running times.
相
I simply wrote down my running times with a pen and paper.
E.Another good thing is that it helps me focus on the running itself.
F.However,if I were asked that question,I'd surely say I'm better off without it.

More Break Time,Better School Life
Hi,I'm Li Hui.Our school has changed the break time from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, and it's
such a great change!
During the longer breaks,I usually go out of the classroom to stretch my legs and arms first.
Sometimes I play badminton with my classmates on the playground, and other times I chat with
my friends under the big tree, sharing funny things that happened in class. When the break is
nearly over,I can also sit quietly to drink some water and prepare for the next lesson. This longer
break makes me feel more relaxed and energetic.I no longer feel tired between classes, and I can
focus better on my studies. It really makes our school life more enjoyable and wonderful.
