A lot of barking goes on in a college football locker room. Coaches barking at players. Players barking at each other. The entire team barking and howling just before bursting onto the field to begin a game. An actual dog once barked in the USC locker room. His name was Quebec, and since 2011 the yellow Labrador was the guide dog for Jake Olson, who became a national inspiration for his uplifting story of taking the field as the Trojans long snapper years after losing his sight.
Quebec died Thursday at 14, and Olson, now a motivational speaker, posted a heartfelt appreciation on Instagram. “A bond was broken today that defies words. A part of me died today along with the loss of my bestest friend I could have ever asked for.”
Olson, 27, joined the USC team in 2015 and two years later snapped the ball during a point-after kick during a season-opening win over Western Michigan at the Coliseum. When the ball sailed through the uprights, the USC sideline erupted, fans hugged and high-fived and Quebec sensed something wonderful had happened and barked in approval.
Olson and Quebec became a team in 2010, shortly after Olson had his right eye removed at age 12. He’d battled a rare form of eye cancer, retinoblastoma, nearly his entire life, and lost his left eye before he turned one.
Yet by the time he enrolled at USC in 2015 on a Swim With Mike scholarship, awarded annually from the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship fund, Olson had played football and golf at Orange Lutheran High, sung in the school choir, co-written two faith-based books about overcoming adversity and been featured on national television.
“Quebec was born November 6th 2009. I went blind on November 12th 2009,” Olson wrote on Instagram. “If you know anything about dogs, it’s that they are born blind and it takes about a week for a puppy’s eyes to open. I believe Q saw for the first time the day I lost my sight. Yes, God made him for me and allowed me to be with him for 12 years and 341 days.”
4. What is implied in the first paragraph?
A. Coaches have rights to yell at players.
B. Players tend to lose control before a game.
C. A dog was once a special existence for a team.
D. A dog owner lost his sight to an accident on the field.
5. Why did Quebec bark in the match in 2015?
A. To attract attention.
B. To applaud a victory.
C. To show the direction.
D. To protest the unfairness.
6. What can be learned about Olson?
A. He was born with a disability.
B. He believed in the power of family.
C. He developed overall despite his trouble.
D. He was challenged academically in college.
7. Which of the following can best describe Olson and Quebec?
A. Attached and supportive.
B. Committed and inspiring.
C. Educational and responsible.
D. Courageous and inseparable.
C
When turning our minds to self-improvement, we assume that we need to put pleasure on pause until we reach our goals, following sayings like “no pain, no gain”. If we fail, we blame our lack of willpower and our choice to give into short-term temptation (诱惑) at the cost of long-term benefits. Yet the latest research shows this is the wrong approach.
Immediate pleasure and satisfaction in the process, rather than delayed rewards, are what drive us to keep going. Pleasure does not ruin self-control; instead, it supports our perseverance. Forget delayed gratification (满足); it’s instant gratification that keeps us going.
These insights come from self-determination theory, which classifies motivation into intrinsic drives — things we do for fun, engagement or pleasure — and extrinsic drives — things we do for long-term benefits. A study surveyed people on their New Year’s goals, rating intrinsic drives (pleasure, engagement) and extrinsic drives (long-term usefulness, importance), then tracking their progress for a year. The results showed intrinsic drive was the best predictor of perseverance, while extrinsic motivation had no effect; a goal’s abstract worth mattered little if its process wasn’t immediately rewarding. Sadly, most participants mistakenly believed focusing on extrinsic value over pleasure would boost perseverance, a doomed strategy.
Intrinsic and extrinsic drives do not have to be at odds, of course. They can coexist: you might start exercising on a doctor’s advice but switch to enjoyable activities like ice skating instead of boring runs, burning calories while feeling fulfilled rather than sacrificing.
Researchers warn against choosing activities only for quick results — dieters maintain weight loss better with delicious healthy meals than bland low-calorie soups. For less fun habits, behavioural scientist’s “temptation bundling” helps: combining the habit with immediate gratification, like students listening to audio books while working out. Similarly, studying in a favorite cafe turns homework into a treat, boosting consistency by adding intrinsic drive to extrinsic goals.
8. What is the common excuse for self-blame?
A. Lacking willpower.
B. Rejecting short fun.
C. Having vague goals.
D. Fearing big challenges.
9. What is the new discovery according to the text?
A. Instant pleasure is the drive for personal growth.
B. Delayed rewards play a significant role in success.
C. Self-improvement has nothing to do with pleasure.
D. Willpower has long-term benefits for human beings.
10. What does the underlined phrase “at odds” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. In common. B. Of significance.
C. Of concern. D. In conflict.
11. What can be regarded as an intrinsic drive?
A. Long-term usefulness.
B. Engagement in an activity.
C. Abstract worth of an event.
D. The process of forming habits.
D
Daily behaviors are largely automatic, with an estimated 65 percent performed on “autopilot,” meaning that we do them without thinking. These automatic behaviours can be helpful, like washing our hands, or unhelpful, like biting our nails. Since so many of our day-to-day actions are habitual, understanding how habits form and how we can change them is essential for improving health and productivity.
Studying habits isn’t easy. Because habitual behaviours happen automatically, we can’t always see or measure them directly. Humans can override habits when making a conscious effort. For example, we can avoid our habitual post-dinner chocolate bar if we are truly motivated to, but if we aren’t thinking about it, chances are the wrapper will be empty before we’ve even noticed. While laboratory studies offer control, they often lack realism, and real-world studies, though realistic, are difficult to control due to countless uncontrolled variables.
That’s where virtual reality (VR) comes in. VR is a computer-generated simulation (模拟) that can a allow for realistic interaction with a perceived 3D environment. At the University of Surrey, researchers are developing new methodologies in the VR lab, where habits are created in a way similar to how people act in the real world. Participants wear a VR headset and act as hospital workers preparing rooms for patients. They must follow a specific order of tasks — for example, making the bed, then emptying the bin. By repeating this sequence many times, they start to form habits.
The strength of the formed habits is then tested through multiple methods. These include self-reports, computer-based tasks, and intentional changes within the VR environment. For instance, participants might be asked to perform the tasks in a new order or while completing a competing mental task. If they unconsciously revert to the old sequence or perform more slowly, it indicates the habit’s strength. VR allows researchers to precisely track actions, speeds, and responses to such changes.
Measuring habits using VR could help answer many of the big questions: What’s the best way to add a new habit to an existing routine? How do rewards affect habit formation? And how can we replace bad habits with better ones? By using VR, we hope to unlock new insights into how to make and break habits — a key to promoting positive behaviour change.
12. What purpose does the first paragraph serve?
A. To define the key factors of the study.
B. To help the readers brainstorm on the topic.
C. To explain the cause of some phenomenon.
D. To emphasize the significance of the study.
13. What sets back measuring habits in labs?
A. Conscious efforts.
B. Uncontrolled variables.
C. A lack of realistic simulations.
D. True motivation behind a behavior.
14. How is VR employed in the research?
A. VR headsets send signals to participants.
B. VR provides access to behavioral details.
C. VR trains participants to work in hospitals.
D. VR ensures the sequence of performed tasks.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Laboratory Studies vs Real-world Research
B. Virtual Reality: A New Way To Study Habits
C. Ways to Form Good Habits and Break Bad Ones
D. Habits: Automatic Behaviours To Influence Life
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Rot (腐烂) in hell. Far from its original harmless meaning, the word has now evolved into a lifestyle trend. It started as a joke on social media: spending an entire weekend in bed, scrolling through videos, eating snacks, and refusing to change out of pajamas. ____16____ It was considered as a radical rejection of hustle culture (内卷文化). However, in the spring of 2026, mental health experts are sounding the alarm that what looks like relaxing might actually be a sign of depression.
The concept of rest is not the issue; everyone needs downtime. ____17____ While a lazy Sunday morning can recharge your batteries, a full 48 hours of bed rotting often leads to increased feelings of weariness and anxiety. According to Dr. Wang, a clinical psychologist in Shanghai, “Staying in bed for too long makes your brain associate the bed with wakeful worry rather than sleep, breaking the sleep hygiene rules and triggering insomnia.”
Furthermore, social isolation and lack of sunlight disrupt the body’s natural rhythm. ____18____ Many people who work remotely or stay at home for extended periods also tend to snack on high-sugar, high-fat processed foods while lying in bed scrolling through social media. That adds extra calorie intake that the body cannot consume in time, further throwing hormone balance out of whack.
____19____ Experts suggest “active rest”. This involves stepping away from screens and engaging in low-energy activities that still require some movement, such as gentle stretching, listening to an audiobook while walking around the block, or cooking a simple meal. ____20____ As one therapist wisely noted, “Your bed should be your sanctuary for sleep, not your prison for hiding from the world.”
A. So, what should you do instead of rotting?
B. However, how can you truly live with rotting?
C. The suggested ways work out well for most people.
D. It makes returning to a normal schedule even harder.
E. The goal is to disconnect from digital stress, not from life.
F. The problem lies in the duration and quality of the activity.
G. Termed “bed rotting”, this trend was seen as a form of self-care.

As a clueless freshwoman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read short stories, not how to write them.
The number of students in the room surprised me. I’d never seen a humanities class so crowded. Every seat around the table was taken, so I joined the folks standing with their backs pressed to the walls, who quickly informed me that the roster (名单) was full, and so was the waitlist. What, I wondered, was going on?
When the instructor walked in and introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The course wouldn’t count toward my major, Comparative Literature. Since I was already there, however, I decided to see what all the fuss (追捧) was about. I can no longer recall how the class unfolded that day, but what I do remember is my unexplainable resolve that I had to be a part of it. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I tried to understand how stories worked their magic; perhaps the buzzing energy in the room had gone to my head.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the instructor asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked the instructor, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class?” He said he would. It suddenly hit me how I’d gained admission to university by setting goals and working to meet them with singular focus. And yet there I was, diving into a class that wouldn’t count toward my major, simply because it had sparked my interest.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I nodded firmly and said, “Thank you, sir.”

【答案】范文1
How Labor Has Shaped Me
Labor is more than just getting things done; it is a growth journey that leaves deep marks on my heart. My most unforgettable labor experience was last winter, when I joined a community park clean-up with classmates.
On a cold, windy day, we picked up litter wiped benches and swept walkways. My hands turned red from the cold, and my back ached after hours of bending. Yet seeing the park grow cleaner, I felt a quiet pride, and the warm thanks from passing elderly residents made all effort worthwhile.
This experience has shaped me unexpectedly. I have realized labor is far more than physical work — it is a practice of responsibility and a bridge of connection. It taught me to cherish others’ labor and take initiative to contribute to the community. I have also learned to be more patient and resilient, persisting through difficulties instead of giving up easily.
范文2
How Labor Has Shaped Me
Labor is a long-term journey throughout my growth. Since childhood, I have kept doing housework like tidying my own room, washing dishes, and watering plants. Though simple and sometimes tiring, these small tasks taught me to be patient and take responsibility for my life.
As I grow up, I regularly volunteer in community work and help with school cleaning. I worked through cold winter days and hot summer afternoons, trying my best to make our surroundings cleaner. Labor repays me with praise and warmth.
These repeated labor experiences have gradually changed me from a lazy child into a diligent, caring person. They let me deeply understand that labor brings precious growth, and I will keep learning from it to become a better version of myself.

【答案】 I nodded firmly and said, “Thank you, sir.” The following week was not going so smoothly as I had expected. I even subconsciously regretted the bluntness in public. However, I would regret it more if I didn’t strive for it. The struggles during the application process were woven into an inspiring story, with the leading character based on my own personal experiences. I handed the first three chapters to the instructor out of uncertainty whether he would mock me. To my surprise, he was intrigued enough to read the whole thing. I got my spot.
As a published author now, I feel lucky to have taken the course. The question I had asked opened a door to a bigger world for me, and the course walked me through the world to not just to publication, but to a deeper understanding of my own voice-raw but courageous. The course was a treasure, where every period mattered to sharpen my craft. I did benefit a lot from the rigorous feedback, the late-night revisions, and the quiet moments when a single sentence finally clicked. Even though it didn’t count in as a credit, I still treated it like my most important class—because it was.
