16-year-old Jared Lepora from the UK has created a robotic arm that imitates the natural movements of a human hand using only ready-made Lego Mindstorms parts. He showcased this invention at the 2025 International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Hangzhou, China.
The teenager co-authored research recently published along with colleagues including his father Nathan Lepora, a professor of robotics and artificial intelligence at the University of Bristol. Jared used Lego Mindstorms, a Lego robotics kit, to build a Lego version of SoftHand-A, a 3D-printed robot hand introduced in an earlier study.
“My dad has always been working on robotics. He designs robotic systems with complicated mechanisms that have lots of real-world applications,” Jared said. “My goal was to create an educational design which shows professional mechanisms in a simple educational way understandable by children.”
The design is a playful interpretation of a serious line of robotics research. It is based on the Pisa/IIT SoftHand model, a world-leading development in soft robotics that uses a single tendon (肌腱) system to coordinate finger movements. Jared adapted this concept for educational purposes, replacing the 3D-printed parts and metal bearings with standard components and over 100 plastic Lego bearings. Despite its toy origins, the Lego SoftHand performs remarkably well. Lab tests have shown that it can grip objects with about 90% of the force of a professional 3D-printed SoftHand, and perform open-close cycles in about one second.
Since the hand can be constructed from Lego pieces and uses state-of-the-art design concepts for robotic hands, it has the potential to educate and inspire children to learn about the frontiers of modern robotics. “My generation and younger are the future of robotics, so it is essential that we understand and take interest in this field,” Jared says. “Building a robot hand with your own hands is a great way to learn about robotics.”
4. What can be learned about Jared from the first two paragraphs?
A. He has an inquiring mind. B. He is keen on cutting-edge tech.
C. He is fond of Lego bricks. D. He excels at hands-on projects.
5. What is Jared’s design like?
A. Rare but mind-opening. B. User-friendly and informative.
C. Complicated but well-operated. D. Cost-effective and professional.
6. What is the basis for Jared’s design?
A. A novel concept of movements.
B. Earlier research of Lego robotics.
C. An advanced model in soft robotics.
D. The availability of Lego components.
7. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Like father, like son. B. Home is the first school.
C. It’s never too late to learn. D. Think outside the Lego box.
C
Horror fans have been painted with the same broad and bloody brush for decades: labelled as cold, unfeeling thrill-seekers who delight in others’ suffering. Film critics have described the fans and creators of films like Friday the 13th and Saw as “very sick people”. But I argue that these assumptions are all wrong.
The misconceptions about horror fans were seemingly supported by evidence presented in an analysis from 2007. But the analysis is only as strong as the studies it summarizes. In this case, they had poorly defined variables. For example, the two studies with the strongest association with low empathy examined participant enjoyment of torture and short clips that concluded with cruel murders and no satisfactory resolution. These measures probably won’t tell you much about horror fans. The authors of the analysis admitted deep in the discussion section that the link between empathy and enjoyment of horror disappeared when those studies were removed.
In 2024, I published a set of studies that directly addressed the question of horror fandom and empathy. The results were striking. Using standardised assessments, horror fans scored higher on empathy and compassion.
When my colleagues and I examined the motivations of horror fans at frightening attractions, we found that “adrenaline junkies” represent only one subset. We also found a group we called “dark copers”, who use horror to process difficult emotions. Another group, “white knucklers,” confront fear to learn about themselves. The three-type model reveals that many fans aren’t just motivated by adrenaline (肾上腺素). But there is one common trait among them.
My research has identified morbid curiosity (猎奇) as the most powerful predictor of horror fandom. It is this tendency to seek out information about threatening or death-related phenomena that drives a fascination with horror media. Studies show that people with higher levels of this curiosity demonstrate better preparedness for real crises and show increased resilience during stressful life events.
The evidence paints a picture of horror fans being empathetic, curious and psychologically complicated. Horror is a proof to human adaptability and our remarkable capacity to find meaning, connection and even growth in the face of our deepest fears.
8. What is a conventional wisdom about horror fans?
A. They lack empathy. B. They tend to fall sick.
C. They desire comfort. D. They seek uniqueness.
9. What is the limitation of previous studies?
A. They ignore the essence of humanity.
B. The variables’ definition is indefinite.
C. They rely much on participants’ feelings.
D. The incomplete discussion is misleading.
10. Why is the three-type model mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To introduce types of horror fans.
B. To show motivations of horror fans.
C. To group fans based on their emotions.
D. To compare different levels of curiosity.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards horrors?
A. He doubted them. B. He dismissed them.
C. He approved of them. D. He brushed them aside.
D
Facial expressions are central to social life, yet scientists still don’t fully understand how the brain produces them. For decades, one influential theory has held that what appears on your face is largely an emotional reflex — an honest, automatic readout of what you feel inside. But that view struggles to explain the fact that we often tailor our expressions to the moment.
To find out what’s going on in the brain during facial expressions, researchers turned to monkeys. They recorded neural (神经的) activity while the animals interacted with one another in the lab. The team’s results published in Science came as a surprise: the monkeys’ expressions, from a threatening face to a friendly “lip-smacking”, were generated by both the medial cortex (内侧皮层) and lateral cortex (外侧皮层). These two brain regions were long thought to operate independently, but the study showed that both of them participated in the production of all kinds of facial expressions.
The two regions did, however, run at different speeds. Activity in the lateral cortex reoriented quickly, to coordinate the rapid facial movements that make for smooth social interaction. By contrast, things happen at a more leisurely pace in the medial cortex, perhaps allowing it to track slow-changing contextual factors that influence facial expressions. What’s more, both neural patterns show up before facial movements do, suggesting the brain prepares expressions in advance.
This all raises a question: Do monkeys intentionally plan the faces they make? That’s the interpretation evolutionary psychologists explore in the new study. If facial expressions are partly voluntary, they may be less like emotional mirrors and more like “tools for social influence”, as the researchers put it. At the very least, they seem to arise from complex interactions between emotion and cognition.
Alan Fridlund, a social and evolutionary psychologist who was not involved in this study, has no trouble believing monkeys hold their faces strategically. But he doubts that staged, lab-bound interactions can capture the full reality of monkeys’ communications, or the neural activity underlying it; ideally, future research would take place in the monkeys’ natural environment. Still, Fridlund says, the new study “tells us in infinitely more detail how we can investigate the neurology of facial displays.”
12. What does the study reveal about the medial cortex and lateral cortex?
A. They record neural activities.
B. They perform different functions.
C. They cooperate to create expressions.
D. They stimulate the conveyance of emotions.
13. What does the underlined word “reoriented” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Shifted. B. Decreased. C. Appeared. D. Expanded.
14. What is Alan Fridlund’s suggestion for future research?
A. Collecting specific data.
B. Experimenting in nature.
C. Detailing the observations.
D. Expanding research subjects.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. What matters to socialization?
B. Decode the signals of emotions
C. Facial expressions mirror emotions
D. Are facial displays made intentionally?

It is common that we deflect(转移)our feelings and make others feel guilty, which can result in heated arguments and even guilt trips. But it’s essential to understand a fundamental principle: Just as others are not accountable for your emotions, you are not responsible for how others feel. ____17____ For example, replace “You hurt me” with “I feel hurt.” This expresses your feelings without blame, fostering(培养)healthier communication and emotional ownership.
When emotions run high, self-control becomes vital. ____18____ In heated moments, focus first on calming yourself rather than reacting without thinking. By carefully choosing your words and actions, you can prevent unnecessary damage to your relationships and demonstrate real maturity.
____19____ Question your initial thoughts before reacting and reflect on whether your own behavior has contributed to the issue. This practice helps you move beyond automatic reactions and respond more thoughtfully, reducing conflicts. If you make a mistake, take full responsibility for your actions and offer a sincere apology which will build trust and shows strength instead of weakness. Taking ownership in this way is a cornerstone of emotional growth and integrity.
Finally, you are known by the company you keep; this is always true. If you are surrounded by happy and motivated people, you will always be happy. If you are surrounded by negative people that only bring others down then you will always feel miserable. In order to be emotionally intelligent, you must have a good and supporting company by your side. ____20____ Whenever you feel something like that, cut ties with them immediately.

I was a 22-year-old medical student from Sri Lanka, studying in a quiet university town in Russia. For as long as I could remember, becoming a doctor had been my greatest aspiration — one that had driven me to leave my family and home behind, to brave the harsh Russian winters and endless hours of tiring study. I had always believed that with hard work, I could heal the sick and make my parents proud.
But my financial situation took a sudden turn for the worse when my family back in Sri Lanka could no longer send me money. With no savings left and bills piling up, I had no choice but to pack my bags and return home, abandoning the dream I’d fought so hard for.
On the morning of my departure, I dragged my heavy suitcase to the bus stop, my steps slow and heavy. The bus to Moscow was crowded and endless traffic jammed the roads for hours. By the time I finally reached the city center, I could barely breathe from worry — I was already running late for my flight. I grabbed my suitcase and rushed toward the underground station, my breath coming in short gasps (喘气) as I weaved through the bustling crowds.
When I finally made it to the airport, my heart sank. The flight gate was shut tight. I approached the counter, my voice trembling as I begged the staff for help. “You can take the standby flight 3 hours later, Miss,” the staff lady said, “but you have to pay an extra one hundred dollars for the rebooking fee.”
I had used up all my savings on the journey to Moscow and had no financial support from home; I didn’t have that money. For me, it was an impossible amount. I wanted to be strong, to hold back my tears, but I couldn’t. I broke down and cried uncontrollably right there in front of the counter, my shoulders shaking as I thought of my wasted efforts and the uncertain future waiting for me. People began to gather around me. Suddenly, I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

Emotions shape our lives in different ways. To grow and be better than before, developing emotional intelligence can make you stand out from the crowd. ____16____
A. Always communicate your needs clearly.
B. Try to change others’ perspectives patiently.

【答案】参考范文
Through my tears, I noticed a hesitant old man watching me. His eyes were filled with concern and kindness. The man reached into his pocket and took out a wallet. He carefully counted out the one-hundred-dollar bill and handed it to me, saying, “Take this, young lady. Don’t give up on your dream.” Then, he also gave me a small piece of paper with his contact information on it, telling me to reach out if I ever needed help again. I was so shocked and grateful that I could hardly speak.
With his contact information in pocket, I watched him disappear in the crowd. His act of kindness had given me a second chance. I quickly paid the rebooking fee and boarded the standby flight. On the plane, I kept thinking about the old man. I promised myself that I would repay his kindness one day. When I finally arrived home, I immediately wrote a letter to him, expressing my deep gratitude. His selfless act would always be a reminder that there is still good in the world, and it would inspire me to keep chasing my dream.
