3. Let students match in pairs, then check answers together.
4. Ask: “Have you ever experienced or heard about any natural disaster?” Let 2–3 students share briefly.
5. Introduce the topic: “Today we will learn safety tips for different natural disasters.”
Purpose: To activate prior knowledge and introduce key vocabulary.

Step 2: Pre-listening (Vocabulary) (5 mins)
1. Show the new words on PPT with pictures (earthquake, typhoon, flood, wildfire, powerful, indoors, shut, lightning, authority, advise, throat, lung).
2. Drill pronunciation (choral, individual).
3. Give simple examples: “Powerful” = very strong; “Shut” = close; “Advise” = tell someone what is good to do.
Step 3: While-listening (12 mins)
1. First listening: Play the conversation (Mr. Green and students). Ask: “What are they talking about?” (Natural disasters and safety tips.)
2. Second listening: Play again. Students answer:
- How many natural disasters are mentioned? (Four: earthquakes, typhoons, floods, wildfires)
- What is the important thing during natural disasters? (Be prepared and know how to protect ourselves.)
3. Third listening: Play a third time. Students complete the table (safety tips for each disaster) in the PPT.
4. Check answers together.
Step 4: Post-listening & Language Focus (10 mins)
1. Reading aloud: Students read the conversation in groups (roles: Mr. Green, Jenny, Brian, Peter, Tom, Mary).
2. Language points (use PPT slides):
- powerful (adj.) – power (n.) – powerfully (adv.)
- When it comes to … (talking about a topic)
- protect … from … (keep safe from danger)
- shut (v. & adj.) – shut the door, be shut
- advise (v.) – advise sb. to do, advise doing, advise that …
- Contrast: advise (verb) vs. advice (noun).
Step 5: Speaking & Extension (8 mins)
1. Pair work: Students make a short conversation about a natural disaster they experienced or heard about. Use the model: “What happened? What did you do? What should people do?”
2. Sharing: Invite 2–3 pairs to present.
Step 6: Summary & Homework (3 mins)
1. Summary: Review safety tips for earthquakes, typhoons, floods, wildfires. Ask: “Why is it important to be prepared?”
2. Homework:
- Basic: Write 5 sentences giving safety advice for one natural disaster (e.g., earthquake).
- Advanced: Make a poster with at least three safety tips for a disaster of your choice.
- Preview Unit 8, Lesson 2.
思政渗透与学科育人有机融合点Subject-based Character Education
This lesson teaches students to stay calm, be prepared, and know how to protect themselves and others during natural disasters. It fosters a sense of responsibility for personal safety and encourages helping those in need. Understanding disaster causes (e.g., lightning, dry weather) also raises awareness of environmental protection and climate change.
