The World-Famous Nine
By Ben Guterson, illustrated by Kristina Kister
Zander's grandmother owns the most incredible department store in the world. When a string

ster called Darkbloom may have returned. The monster, which can control people, wants a magi-
cal object that disappeared from the store decades ago.Zander notices that walls on many floors
contain mysterious symbols and takes them down in his notebook. Will the 11-year-old boy be a-
ble to solve the puzzle and secure the object before Darkbloom does?Packed with suspense,fas-
cination, and a family drama, this mystery may remind you of a cross between Escape from Mr.
Lemoncello's Library and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In 2020,at age 14,William Cabaniss noticed that some of his classmates were skipping
meals due to food insecurity, and he wanted to do something. To help his classmates and his com-
munity,he started making bottles of homemade vanilla extract()and donated 100%of
his profits to his local food bank.
"No one should be hungry,"William said."No one should have to worry about where their
next meal is coming from.
William had been enjoying baking as a hobby. One day, while baking a pan of cakes and
adding vanilla,he realized he could easily produce his own vanilla extract rather than purchasing
it at the supermarket. Then he took the idea a step further by planning to sell the vanilla extract
and donate all profits to the local food bank where he volunteered.
He immediately went to work putting his new plan into action. He used his own recipe to pro-
duce as many bottles of vanilla extract as possible during his free time.He then created a logo and
designed a website to start the business.
In 2020,William invited volunteers to join him on his mission to fight hunger in his commu-
nity. The extremely positive response allowed him to expand his program into a non-profit organi-
zation,Vanilla Feeds Tomorrow.The non-profit project continues operations today,and William
donates the profit to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.Each$30 bottle sold provides
approximately 42 meals to people in need, and the organization has raised more than 200,000
to date.

In a world full of people, you must recognise and believe in yourself-that's the key to
moving forward. We are what we say. Those who claim that "society affects you"are completely
wrong, because you are defined by your own thoughts and opinions.Society does not shape your
behaviour-your thinking does, and also how you take influence from others.
However, with the growing trend of people relying more on AI than their own intelli-
gence for almost everything, the sad reality is that when people should be using their brains,
they are losing the ability to think and dream independently because of their over-dependence
on artificial intelligence. If you use AI or AI tools for even minor tasks, you are fooling your-
self,not others.
Al's influence on human thinking is a real concern-over-reliance on it can lead to a de-
cline in critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The more people depend on AI for even the
simplest tasks, the less they exercise their own intelligence.
As for the control aspect,AI itself isn't inherently()in charge, but the people who
develop and regulate it hold significant power. The concerns about AI being trained on copyright-
ed or famous works without permission are valid().Many argue that this is intellectual
theft, yet little action is taken because AI has become so integrated into our daily lives. It's a
complex issue -AI offers convenience, but at what cost?
But even then I would urge my young readers to start using their brain instead of relying on
Al.Do the work you used to do before, you don't need the help of Al.Believing in yourself is a
great achievement because only a few people truly have self-confidence and trust in their own de-
cisions.
Remember, the human brain is more powerful than any AI's capabilities, since all inventions
in the world were developed by humans. So use your brain, since it is more powerful than you re-
alise.
28.What does“We are what we say.”refer to?
A.Society does influence us.
B.We are shaped by our own ideas.
C.People around us have an effect on us.D.We are to become someone parents expect.
29.What is a real concern about using AI or AI tools?
A.AI's ability to solve problems.
B.The increase of Al's content.
C.AI's impact on human thinking.
D.The process of AI's development.
30.Why do people take little action on Al's knowledgeable theft?
A.AI itself can't be in charge.
B.AI is developed by human.
C.AI has fitted into our daily lives closely.D.AI provides convenience for people.
31.What is the author's advice?
A.Believe in yourself,not Al.
B.Believe in Al absolutely.
C.Use AI properly and actively.
D.Learn how to make use of Al.

mission -with the spaceship named Mengzhou,or Dream Vessel, the lander,Lanyue,or Em-

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My exams were going on and they were quite difficult, which made me really anxious. Our
principal promised that anyone who scored at least 90 percent would go on a school trip.
There was a mix of emotions in our classroom-some students were eager to go on the trip,
while others were really stressed and terrified about the exams. We didn't know where we would
be going, and our teacher told us that it was a surprise.
I was nervous about my maths result because my percentage was always below my expecta-
tions. However, when the result was announced,I was overjoyed to find I had scored 94 percent
in maths, besides getting about 90 percent in all the other subjects!I was more excited about my
marks than the trip, because it was something I didn't expect.
As promised, our principal announced the date of the trip for the high scorers of all the sec-
tions. On the decided day, school buses took us and our teachers to our surprise destination.
It turned out that our destination was a beach. We were overjoyed, but soon our joy turned to
concern as we saw the area.It was filled with rubbish of all kinds.
I remembered that in our English exam,we had a comprehension passage about recycling
and it suddenly clicked-this was the reason we were there:to help clean up the beach to pro-
tect the marine animals from pollution.
Just then, our principal gathered all the students and said,"The surprise destination was
meant to amaze us,as it was supposed to be a place for us to enjoy. However, due to the harmful
human practices, this once beautiful place has become not only harmful to us,but also to marine
life.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

for the future.
I shared the experience with my parents, who decided to visit the beach again on Sun-

第二节
The gravity of her words sunk in as we all realised the im-
portance of preserving such places for the future. We all started
cleaning up the trash, using the gloves and garbage bags that
had been provided for us.After a couple of hours,we cleaned
ourselves up and had lunch together, making sure to take all the
leftover plates and glasses with us.We were all exhausted, but
the feeling that we had done something meaningful for a great
cause made it all worthwhile.
I shared the experience with my parents, who decided to visit
the beach again on Sunday. My father booked a bus for the trip.
When we arrived,my sister posted a picture on Instagram and
Facebook of us all cleaning the beach.Soon, more people
showed up,each carrying a bag to collect plastic and metal for
proper disposal and recycling. After some hard work, the entire
beach was cleaned.Small actions, like picking up trash and re-
cycling, can help ensure our oceans remain healthy and safe for
marine life.Every little action we take makes a big difference.
