Starting at 8:30 a.m., the activity was made up of three parts. To begin with, the exchange students took turns to introduce themselves. They said, “Look, you shouldn’t do this. It’s not a good habit to make your classmates or friends feel bad by showing off your wealth to them. Your wealth is not something that you achieved; you have it because your family has it. What would you do if that wealth was taken away tomorrow? If you continue with this behaviour, you will lose your friends and your money will not help you get real friends.” After hearing this, Esha dropped her head. She was ashamed of her behaviour. She realised that it was bad to make fun of others or make them feel small. She said sorry to her parents and friends, and promised that she would never behave in an arrogant way again and would not show off anymore. After seeing Esha’s changed behaviour, Maha decided to be friends with Esha again and this time their relationship was much deeper and better. Maha was happy to see a better version of Esha. When we should have been carefully studying our volleyball teammates on the court ( 球场), or at the very least cheering them on, Lacey and I were in a deep discussion about the suffering of trying on jeans with our moms, an unpleasant experience only two tweens forced to wear school uniforms 95% of the year could truly have. This was 1995 and if there was one thing 12-year-olds could agree on, it was how badly they were treated when it came to jeans. “My mom will be like, ‘We can make them fit!’” I told Lacey with a smile. Inside jokes like these would become the foundation (基 础) of our friendship. When you’re in middle school, finding a friend to commiserate (同情) with is a matter of survival, and I found the very best. And then in high school, whether it was buying Starbucks after class or joining after-school clubs, we rarely did anything apart. Teachers and students alike felt surprised when they’d see one of us without the other — we were that connected. So it’s amazing that even though we put 3,000 miles between us in college and have spent at least two-thirds of our friendship that far away, we’re still best friends. A real achievement for two wildly different people: I think of Lacey as calm, cool and collected, whereas I am a bit more high-strung (易激动的). She’s raising three beautiful children. I have one. She grew up in a farm family. I was raised by a doctor and an actress. Any algorithm (计算程序) would likely say we’re not a match, but I can’t imagine my life without her. Part of it is luck. I just happened to sit next to a super girl that day in the sports center. But more likely, it’s the effort we both put into staying close, even as we were physically apart. 24. What did the author and Lacey go through when they were 12 years old? A. They had difficulty in making friends. B. They found it hard to cheer themselves up. C. They were forced to wear clothes they disliked. D. They had no chance to play for the volleyball team. 25. What can we learn about the author and Lacey in high school? A. They started a club. B. They became best friends. C. They set a good example to others. D. They enjoyed each other's company. 26. What happened after the author went to college? A. She kept up a long-distance friendship with Lacey. B. She suddenly realized how different Lacey and she were. C. She became as calm, cool and self-controlled as Lacey. D. She achieved many impressive things just like Lacey did. 27. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. Keeping a friendship takes work. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C. Friendship is love with understanding. D. The only way to have a friend is to be one. C Recreational vehicles (旅 行 房 车), or motorhomes, are a great way to tour the country and see the sights, but thanks to the efforts of one father-daughter team, they've also become a lifeline for people who’ve lost their homes to California’s latest wildfires. The idea of Woody Faircloth, EmergencyRV. org pairs people who are willing to donate their RVs with those in need. To date, Faircloth — often with his daughter Luna along for the ride — has delivered (递送) 95 motorhomes to California area wildfire victims who otherwise might wait months for emergency housing. Faircloth first got the idea for the organization in 2018. Like many that year, the Colorado-based father was shocked by the news of California’s deadly Camp Fire that destroyed hundreds of homes during Thanksgiving week. The story of a man who’d lost pretty much everything but managed to survive the fire in his mobile home impressed Faircloth. Then he asked Luna what she thought about finding an RV and delivering it to a family so they could have a place to call home for Christmas, and she was 100% on board. Faircloth started a GoFundMe campaign (活动) to provide money for the first RV that he and Luna delivered to California. As word of their journey spread, people started reaching out to him, offering to donate their motorhomes — and from there, EmergencyRV.org soon took shape. Many of those who receive mobile homes are firefighters. Their tireless efforts in fighting the fire did not prevent their own homes from burning. One such man is George Wolley, who lost his own home to the Dixie Fire on August 4th. He said, “Before I got that RV, I felt like I was a burden (负担) on everybody that helped me ... I slept a lot in tents and in my car. It gave me a place to go.” Faircloth’s organization continues to grow. He’s thankful for the many things he has — and happy to be in a position to help others. 28. Why was EmergencyRV.org founded? A. To teach people ways to prevent fires. B. To raise money to buy emergency cars. C. To provide housing for wildfire victims. D. To collect and sell second-hand vehicles. 29. What gave Faircloth the idea to set up the organization? A. His interview with a man surviving a fire. B. A news report about a terrible fire. C. His own experience of a wildfire. D. A story of a deadly house fire. 30. What was people’s attitude towards what Faircloth did? A. Carefree. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive. 31. Why was Wolley mentioned in the text? A. To explain the danger of wildfires. B. To praise the efforts of firefighters. C. To show the burden on car owners. D. To introduce the role of donated RVs. D When Janice Prejean was growing up, if she wanted to speak with her grandparents, she had to do it in French. Prejean, now 64, was raised in Ossun, a tiny community in southwest Louisiana. Her story is an example of the thousands of Cajuns in the area, whose relations in the past were French-speaking Canadians. What makes Prejean’s story a little different, however, is that she learned the language. Most people her age never did. French was a source of shame — Cajuns were often considered stupid and backward — and parents wanted to protect their children from prejudice (偏见). However, that started to change some years ago. Efforts were made to bring the language back. Louisiana French programs were set up at Louisiana State University (LSU). Researchers worked to preserve (保护) as many pieces of the language as they could. Amanda LaFleur and Barry Ancelet at LSU wrote the 900-page Dictionary of Louisiana French. 15 years ago, resident (居民) Mavis Frugé hosted the first French Table in the tiny town of Arnaudville. The idea is to bring people together to share a meal while talking only in French. Their first event was a feat — about 125 people attended it — and they’ve been going ever since. Two years ago, the Saint-Luc French Immersion and Cultural Center, a school Frugé helped found, got its own building in Arnaudville. Unlike Louisiana’s formal school programming, it helps tourists and residents learn the language. Frugé hopes it will help members of the community who are interested in learning a little — or a lot — of Louisiana French. Finally, Saint-Luc will also house visiting students. There’s a sense of urgency (紧迫感) driving everyone here to preserve Louisiana French. While working on a project to preserve the work of a local storyteller, LaFleur discovered that the meaning of some of the words he used has been lost. “Despite calling people from his hometown, despite contacting radio presenters we knew ... they were not able to help us identify (确认) the exact nature of those words,” she said. 32. Why did few Cajuns of Prejean’s age speak Louisiana French? A. It was a bit difficult. B. It led to a loss of face. C. It was unlawful in Ossun. D. It seemed to be out of date. 33. What might the underlined word “feat” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Great success. B. Real challenge. C. Funny experience. D. Complete disaster. 34. For whom is Saint-Luc mainly set up? A. Local residents. B. College students. C. Business visitors. D. Language teachers. 35. What problem did LaFleur find? A. The number of storytellers was falling. B. The local radio had no French speakers. C. Pieces of Cajun culture have gone missing. D. Louisiana French has changed all the time. E Friends are always there to lend an ear, offer a shoulder to cry on or join you on your adventures. 36 . She was not only good in her studies, but also good at sports. Maha was smart and kind-hearted. Her parents were proud of her and she was well-liked by everyone in her family and friends’ circle. A new family moved to their neighbourhood and they had a daughter named Esha, who was the same age as Maha. Soon Maha and Esha became friends because they also studied in the same class and had common interests. Esha was a clever student and was generally a nice person, but often she would become a little arrogant (傲慢的). Esha’s family was rich and she was rather proud of being rich. It was no wonder that Esha had a huge ego (自负) and it often showed itself in her behaviour. When Maha and Esha started to hang out together, Maha noticed that Esha always liked to show off her wealth and lifestyle. Maha also noticed, in the first week of their friendship, that Esha made fun of her classmates who were not rich and she would show off her expensive pens and other things to everyone. When her parents bought a new car, she sent a picture of the car in the group chat of her class. Esha also made it a point to bring expensive make-up, bags and even a smartphone, which was not allowed, to the school. This behaviour annoyed (使恼怒) her classmates and they started calling her “Miss Ego”. Maha warned Esha many times that she should stop making fun of others, but she never listened. Maha decided to break her friendship with Esha because she was an arrogant person. When Esha got to know that Maha did not want to be friends with her anymore, she got mad and started making fun of Maha too. This further frustrated (使沮丧) Maha, so she decided to go to Esha’s house and talk to her parents about this. Esha’s parents listened to Maha and they felt ashamed (羞愧的) about their daughter’s behaviour. They told Maha that they were sorry for all the stupid things that Esha did. They then called Esha and made her sit with them. Esha’s parents explained how unacceptable her arrogant behaviour was. After hearing this, Esha dropped her head.
