At the beginning of every school year, a new crop of 15-year-olds pile into my classroom. Some are excited for the new year, while others are unmotivated. Regardless of their attitude, I’m always embarrassed to admit I am scared.
Just fake (假装) it until you make it, my fellow teachers advised. But no matter how much I faked it, and how many years spent teaching the same course, the fear has continued. As the relationships with my students deepen, I naturally grow comfortable, but even then, I feel nervous when something unexpected happens in class.
One might expect that this would cause me to be ashamed, to practice even harder, or to study public speaking methods. But I have learned another way.
This year, I was given a group of 10th graders, and on the first day of class, over half shared in their self-introduction paragraph that they were shy and afraid to speak up in class. My replies on their papers were personal: Did you notice how I held my hands to keep them from shaking today? Did you hear how my voice trembled when I noticed everyone looking at me?
And slowly but surely, my students began to open up about the root of their fears. When they saw me, their experienced teacher, trembling, they had more courage during their presentation. When they heard me stumble (磕绊) over my words, they accepted their own pauses trying to find the right ones.
Fear of public speaking rarely goes away completely. So many students are silenced by it in the classroom, but we as teachers have the chance to encourage by leading with empathy instead of pushing or disappointment. That starts with finding the courage to be honest about our own flaws (瑕疵). We must then teach ourselves, and by extension, our students to reframe those flaws as strengths rather than weaknesses.
4. What does the author say about her fear of public speaking?
A. It becomes easier to hide with practice.
B. It prevents her from teaching effectively.
C. It remains despite her teaching experience.
D. It appears when students are less motivated.
5. How did the author deal with her fear this year?
A. She studied public speaking skills. B. She used it to bond with her students.
C. She switched to a different course. D. She asked her fellow teachers for advice.
6. How were the students affected by the author’s change?
A. They became brave speakers. B. They lost respect for her.
C. They found their own flaws. D. They made academic progress.
7. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Fear is only as deep as the mind allows. B. Profession is more important than honesty.
C. Sharing personal struggles can empower others. D. Public speaking skills make a successful teacher.

Tea has always brought comfort to people on Earth. Now, scientists are asking a new question: Could we grow tea on the Moon? A recent study by the University of Kent suggests that tea plants might actually survive in lunar soil. This offers hope for future astronauts who will live and work on the Moon.
Working with tea experts and space groups, researchers planted young tea bushes in soil made to look like the Moon’s surface. They carefully controlled light, temperature, and water. Another group of plants grew in normal Earth soil for comparison. Surprisingly, after several weeks, the tea plants in the “moon soil” grew just as well as those on Earth. However, plants in soil made to look like Mars did not grow at all. Students measured root length, leaf health, and soil conditions, suggesting that lunar ground may be less hostile than expected.
The idea began when a space scientist heard about farming research. He worked with tea farmers to provide plants for the test. While the main goal is to help space travel, the findings could also help farmers on Earth. Many places today face poor soil because of climate change and over-farming. Learning how plants survive in hard, low-nutrient conditions might lead to new ways to protect crops here at home.
Professor Nigel Mason explained that as humans plan to build bases on the Moon, knowing what people can eat is very important. Growing tea in lunar greenhouses could give settlers fresh food and a taste of home.
He added that the team’s next step is to learn exactly how the plants manage to grow in these extreme conditions. This knowledge could then be used to help other crops grow, both in space and back on our planet. It seems that the idea of a quiet tea break could one day be a small but important part of life on the moon.
8. What did the study by the University of Kent find?
A. Tea plants grew better in moon soil. B. Tea plants cannot grow in moon soil.
C. Mars soil is better for growing plants. D. Moon soil can support tea plant growth.
9. What does the underlined word “hostile” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Unfavorable for growth. B. Similar to the soil on Mars.
C. Full of enemies and attacks. D. Angry and ready to fight back.
10. What is the main purpose of growing tea in moon-like soil?
A. To test if tea tastes better in space. B. To compare with plants in Mars soil.
C. To help future astronauts live on the moon. D. To find new ways to grow tea plants on Earth.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Astronauts prefer tea to other drinks in space.
B. Growing food on the moon is still impossible.
C. Tea breaks will soon be common on the moon.
D. Scientists will study how plants survive in tough soil.

Over the last 1,400 years, populations of the Yangtze finless porpoise have dramatically declined in China. But intensive surveys of its range only span the last couple of decades, leaving lots of gaps in scientists’ knowledge of the species. In a creative blend of art and science, a new study uses historical poetry to chart the critically endangered animal’s population across the river it calls home.
The finless porpoises once lived throughout the entire Yangtze River, which stretches from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea. Now, the only known freshwater porpoise in the world has fewer than 1,800 individuals left in the wild.
The research team combed through databases of Chinese poetry to find references to the porpoise and map its past distribution. They found 724 poems that mentioned the animal, of which half noted where the porpoises were observed. Their findings were published in Current Biology.
“Having access to past data allows us to detect when declines began and correlate those changes with potential threats like habitat destruction, climate change, overhunting, disease or the introduction of invasive species,” says lead author Zhang Yaoyao, an ecologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The poems suggest the porpoise’s range has decreased by 65% since the Tang dynasty. Most of that decline happened in the river’s tributaries and lakes, where the animal’s range has decreased by 91%. While the population decrease was mostly gradual, the sharpest decline has occurred over the past 100 years. That sudden drop aligns with human activities on the river, especially dam construction in the 1950s that blocked off the porpoise's movement to and from the river's main channel.
The work highlights the connection between culture and science. “Poems are actually ancient citizen science, and many Chinese poets were ‘well-educated intellectuals’,” says Zhang. “These data are not perfect...But they do have a lot of information if you use them correctly.” This approach has potential for uncovering the pasts of other endangered species as well. Previously, scholars have used medieval and ancient texts to understand things like volcanic eruptions, auroras and unusual whales.
12. What challenge do scientists face in their research about the porpoise?
A. Its population has dropped off dramatically.
B. Locating its habitats is increasingly difficult.
C. The long-term historical data are insufficient.
D. Its population is hard to calculate precisely.
13. What mainly contributed to the dramatic fall of the porpoise’s populations?
A. Poor resistance to diseases. B. Climate changes over time.
C. Human impacts on its habitats. D. Competition with other species.
14. Why does the author mention “volcanic eruptions” in the last paragraph?
A. To show major threats to endangered wildlife.
B. To introduce challenges in ecological research.
C. To reveal the wisdom of ancient Chinese poets.
D. To prove the value of ancient texts in research.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Historical Poems: Records of Ancient Chinese Wildlife
B. citizen Science: A New Approach to Protecting Animals
C. The Yangtze Finless Porpoise: A Critically Endangered Species
D. Ancient Poetry: A Creative Way to Study Endangered Porpoise

On a bright and sunny day, Ariel Rojas set off on her exciting adventure of hiking and bird-watching at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York. Little did she know that she would run into something completely unusual the day.
Just a mile into her walk, her eyes were drawn to a sight near the water’s edge. There lay a magnificent female mute swan Rojas, who has experience working at the Wild Bird Fund rehab center in Manhattan, was well aware that mute swans could be quite aggressive However, this particular swan was different. It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help.
Rojas took immediate action. She slowly and tenderly covered the swan’s head with her jacket, hoping to keep it calm. Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms. The next challenge was discouraging. The rehab center (康复中心) was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone almost made her desperate.
Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. There on the back seat of his bike was fixed a big-sized backpack. Rojas made two steps forward with efforts, “Help!” After several good glances at Rojas, the man stopped in front of her. With a concerned expression shifted from a confused one he asked “What’s wrong with the swan?” Rojas made a brief explanation as soon as she could, while the man listened attentively, his eyes fixed on the swan in her arms.

C 5. B 6. A 7. C

D 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据划线词上文“Surprisingly, after several weeks, the tea plants in the “moon soil” grew just as well as those on Earth. However, plants in soil made to look like Mars did not grow at all.(令人惊讶的是,几周后,“月壤”中的茶树生长状况与地球上的茶树一样好。然而,模拟火星土壤中的植物却根本没长。)”可知,茶树在模拟月球土壤中生长状况和在土壤中生长一样良好,而在火星土壤中完全无法生长,“Students measured root length, leaf health, and soil conditions, suggesting that lunar ground may be less hostile than expected.(学生们测量了根系长度、叶片健康状况和土壤状况,表明月球表面可能没有预期的那么hostile。)”
根据第三段“While the main goal is to help space travel, the findings could also help farmers on Earth.(虽然这项研究的主要目的是促进太空探索,但其发现也可能对地球上的农民有所帮助)”可知,其目的是帮助未来的宇航员在月球上生活。
根据最后一段“He added that the team’s next step is to learn exactly how the plants manage to grow in these extreme conditions.(他补充道,该团队接下来要做的就是深入了解这些植物是如何在如此恶劣的环境中茁壮成长的)”可知,科学家们将继续研究植物如何在恶劣土壤中生存。

C 13. C 14. D 15. D

根据第一段“But intensive surveys of its range only span the last couple of decades, leaving lots of gaps in scientists' knowledge of the species. (但对其活动范围的密集调查仅覆盖了过去几十年,科学家对该物种的了解存在许多空白)”可知,科学家在研究长江江豚时面临的主要挑战是长期历史数据的不足。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“That sudden drop aligns with human activities on the river, especially dam construction in the 1950s that blocked off the porpoise's movement to and from the river's main channel. (这一突然下降与河流上的人类活动相吻合,特别是20世纪50年代的水坝建设,阻碍了江豚进出主河道的活动)”可知,人类活动对江豚栖息地的影响是导致其数量急剧下降的主要原因。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This approach has potential for uncovering the pasts of other endangered species as well. Previously, scholars have used medieval and ancient texts to understand things like volcanic eruptions, auroras and unusual whales. (这种方法也有可能揭示其他濒危物种的过去。此前,学者们曾利用中世纪和古代文献来了解火山爆发、极光和异常鲸鱼等现象)”可推知,作者提到“火山爆发”是为了证明古代文献在研究中的价值,说明这种方法不仅适用于江豚,还可以用于其他领域的研究。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“In a creative blend of art and science, a new study uses historical poetry to chart the critically endangered animal's population across the river it calls home. (在一项艺术与科学的创造性结合中,一项新的研究利用历史诗歌来描绘这种极度濒危动物在其家园河流中的种群分布)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了科学家通过研究中国历史诗歌来追踪长江江豚的种群变化,揭示了其数量大幅下降的原因,并强调了这种跨学科研究方法的创新性和潜在应用价值。由此可知,D项“Ancient Poetry: A Creative Way to Study Endangered Porpoise (古诗:研究濒危江豚的一种创造性方法)”最符合文章主旨,适合作标题。故选D项。

根据第一段“On a bright and sunny day, Ariel Rojas set off on her exciting adventure of hiking and bird‑watching at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York. (在一个晴朗明媚的日子,阿里尔·罗哈斯出发前往纽约皇后区的牙买加湾野生动物保护区,开启了她令人愉快的徒步观鸟探险之旅。)”可知,此处需要名词表示“探险”。explore是动词,表示探索,其名词形式exploration符合语境。
②考查形容词。句意:她完全没想到之后会遇到一件意外的事。根据第一段“Little did she know that she would run into something completely unusual the day. (她完全不知道当天会遇到一件完全不寻常的事。)”可知,此处修饰名词incident,需要形容词表示“意外的”。unexpected表示“意外的、意想不到的”,符合语境。
③考查非谓语动词。句意:Rojas发现一只赤嘴天鹅静静地卧在水边,当她靠近时,天鹅完全没有攻击的迹象。此处为find sb./sth. doing结构,表示发现某物正处于某种状态。根据第二段“Just a mile into her walk, her eyes were drawn to a sight near the water’s edge. There lay a magnificent female mute swan. (步行仅一英里,她的目光被水边的一幕吸引。一只漂亮的雌性赤嘴天鹅卧在那里。)”和“It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. (当她慢慢靠近时,天鹅一动不动,没有做出任何攻击的举动或意图。)”可知,赤嘴天鹅静静地卧在水边,lie表示躺,现在分词为lying。
④考查动词时态。句意:同上。根据第二段“It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. (当她慢慢靠近时,天鹅一动不动,没有做出任何攻击的举动或意图。)”可知,此处表示“她靠近时”。approach意为“靠近”,描述过去发生的事情应用一般过去时approached;也可以用过去进行时was approaching 表示当时正在靠近的过程。
⑤考查名词。句意:她立刻意识到这只赤嘴天鹅需要医疗救助。根据第二段“It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help. (她清楚这只天鹅出了问题,需要医疗救助。)”可知,它需要医疗帮助。空格处作needed的宾语,需填名词。assist的名词形式assistance意为“援助、帮助”,medical assistance即“医疗救助”。
⑥考查副词。句意:Rojas立刻采取了行动。根据第三段“Rojas took immediate action. She slowly and tenderly covered the swan’s head with her jacket, hoping to keep it calm. (Rojas立刻采取了行动。她缓慢轻柔地用外套盖住天鹅的头部,希望让它保持平静。)”可知,她采取了立即的行动。空格处修饰动词短语took action,需用副词。immediate的副词形式为immediately。
⑦考查副词。句意:她小心翼翼地抱起天鹅,温柔地将它抱在怀中。根据第三段“Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms. (随后,她万分小心地抱起这只沉重的鸟儿,温柔地将它搂在怀里。)”可知,她温柔地抱着它。空格处修饰动词held,需用副词。gentle的副词形式gently 意为“温柔地、轻轻地”。
⑧ 考查形容词。句意:她发现自己不可能独自一人把这么重的天鹅运送到康复中心。根据第三段“How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone almost made her desperate. (她怎么能独自把这么大的天鹅带出这里?光是这个念头就几乎让她绝望。)”可知,独自运送如此巨大的天鹅让她感到绝望,说明这是不可能的。此处是“find + it + 形容词 + for sb. to do sth.”
根据第四段“Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. (就在希望似乎越来越渺茫时,一名骑车路过的男子出现在路的尽头,越走越近。)”可知,一个骑自行车的男人出现了。空格前有不定冠词a/an,需填单数名词。cyclist意为“骑自行车的人”。
⑩考查名词。句意:随着男子的困惑转变为对天鹅的担忧,事情迎来了希望。根据第四段“With a concerned expression shifted from a confused one he asked “What’s wrong with the swan?” (他原本困惑的神情转为担忧,问道:“这只天鹅怎么了?”)”可知,他的表情从困惑变成了关切。空格处作主语,需填名词。confuse的名词形式confusion 意为“困惑”。
【77题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help. (她清楚这只天鹅出了问题,需要医疗救助。)”和第三段“The rehab center was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? (康复中心在城镇的另一边,隔着东河。她怎么能独自把这么大的天鹅带出这里?)”可知,Rojas打算送天鹅去康复中心救治,但天鹅太重,她无法独自运送。
【78题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文救助语境以及第二段“It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help. (她清楚这只天鹅出了问题,需要医疗救助。)”可推知,Rojas会将天鹅送往康复中心,天鹅得到及时治疗、恢复健康后,将会重归自然。
