Culture shock is something many people experience when they visit a new country. It happens because the new culture is very different from their own. These differences can be surprising, confusing, or even embarrassing at first.
For example, personal space means different things in different cultures. In Germany, people usually like to have more space around them. They don’t stand too close to someone unless they know them very well. But in Peru, people are comfortable standing closer to others, even strangers. This can be surprising for someone from Germany.
Greetings are another area where cultures differ. In Japan, people bow as soon as they meet someone. The bow shows respect. In the US, people usually just say “hello” or shake hands. In France, it’s common to kiss on the cheek when greeting friends and family.
Table manners also vary widely. In China, it’s rude to stick chopsticks into a bowl of rice because it reminds people of funeral rituals. In Mexico, it’s polite to use someone’s first name only if they invite you to do so.
Although these differences can be surprising at first, they are also interesting to learn about. Once you understand them, you may become more curious and interested in the new culture. Learning about cultural differences helps us respect and appreciate other ways of life.

A.A feeling of surprise when experiencing a new culture.

B.Because it reminds people of funeral rituals.
C.Because it’s difficult to eat that way.
D. Because it looks strange.

A.All cultures are the same.
B.Cultural differences are interesting and worth learning about.
C.We should avoid visiting other countries.
D. Learning about cultural differences is a waste of time.

At first, I could hardly see anything. After moving down through dark, narrow caves, my eyes were not used to the light. But when I could focus again, I stood in surprise.
“It’s a...sea,” I cried.
“Yes, Axel,” my uncle said, “and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!”
There was a great lake or even an ocean. The shore was covered with small shells where the first living beings lived. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall.
I could see far over this great sea because of a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we were deep below the surface. With its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric.
We kept quiet inside a cave that must have been several miles high.
Human words cannot describe the discoveries of those who have been deep into the earth. My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt surprised and quite scared at the same time. However, the soft salty air cheered me up. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was a great relief.
“Ready to walk a little now?” asked my uncle. “Yes, certainly.”
“Well, let us follow the shore then,” he said, and we began to explore.
Soon, in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. “Mushrooms!” said my uncle. And he was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each was at least nine metres high. How excellent they were!
“Wonderful!” cried my uncle. “Now look under your feet.”
I hadn’t noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked. Suddenly I thought, if once these monsters lived here, might some still walk through these dark forests? I looked around nervously, but we were the only living beings in this underworld. Thankfully!
Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange thoughts.
Where did this underground sea end? Where would we go?

On 26 December 2004, Tilly Smith, a 10-year-old English schoolgirl, and her family were on holiday in Phuket, Thailand. Everyone was enjoying the beautiful weather that morning. Some people were swimming in the sea, and some were relaxing on the beach. But while Tilly was walking along the beach with her family, she noticed something strange. Thick white froth was forming on top of the waves. Next, she saw that the waves were coming in instead of going out.
Just then, she remembered something important. Two weeks before, her geography teacher had explained that earthquakes under the sea could create dangerous waves called tsunamis!
“I know what’s going to happen! There’s going to be a big wave,” Tilly cried. Unfortunately, her family didn’t believe her and wanted to continue their walk. However, Tilly refused to take a single step further. Finally, her mother decided to continue the walk alone, and the rest of her family returned to the hotel.
Back at the hotel, Tilly’s father told a security guard about the tsunami. The security guard was shocked. He knew about the huge earthquake in nearby Indonesia. It meant that a tsunami was possible! He jumped into action right away and rushed to get people off the beach. Everyone began to panic. People were screaming and running as fast as they could when they saw a huge wall of water coming from the sea.
Tilly was right! Her mother was one of the last people on the beach, but thankfully, her family made it to safety just as the water hit the hotel. The 2004 tsunami caused over 200,000 deaths, but no one on the beach died that day.

④ Tilly’s father told the security guard about the tsunami.
A.②①④③ B.①②③④ C.②④①③ D.④②①③
38.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To introduce the geography lesson Tilly learned.
B.To describe how terrible the 2004 tsunami was.
C.To praise Tilly’s knowledge and quick thinking, and show the importance of learning.
D.To explain why no one died on that beach that day.
39.What can we infer about the writer’s attitude towards Tilly Smith?
A.The writer thinks she was just lucky.
B.The writer admires her for her bravery and quick thinking.
C.The writer feels sorry for her because she was scared.
D.The writer thinks she should have acted faster.

Volunteering is a great way to help others, whether it’s a child who has difficulty finishing his or her homework or an elderly person who feels lonely. 41 When somebody volunteers, they are doing something good for others or the world around them without being paid.
42 It can be organized, such as working for an organization, or not organized, like helping your neighbors with their food shopping. Many people volunteer to help the environment by picking up rubbish or planting trees.
How does helping others help you? Research has shown that volunteering improves your well-being (幸福感). It can give you a sense of purpose and then help build your self-trust and make you feel motivated (有积极性的). 43 Amy Meek, who volunteers for a wildlife organization, agrees. Amy loves animals, and by joining the wildlife organization, she has become much clearer about what she can do and feels more motivated.
44 By giving something to others, you feel happier and this is good for your health. Volunteering has also been shown to reduce your personal worries because you pay some attention to others’ needs. 45 It can help you make more friends.
“So volunteering is good for our mental health,” says Jolie Goodman of the Mental Health Foundation. So, what are you waiting for? Go volunteering and make a difference, not only for yourself but also for the world.
A.What is volunteering?
B.When do you volunteer?
C.Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes.
D.Stop waiting for someone else to do the work.
E.Helping others can actually help yourself, too.

D. Because it looks strange.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.All cultures are the same.

C.We should avoid visiting other countries.
D. Learning about cultural differences is a waste of time.

C
—Adapted from A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

【导语】本文节选自《地心游记》,主要介绍了作者与叔叔在地下发现大海、蘑菇林及骨头后的奇妙探险经历。
31.“Soon in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. ‘Mushrooms!’ said my uncle...There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each was at least nine metres high.”表明,作者和叔叔看到了成片巨大的蘑菇,与选项A中出现巨型蘑菇的图片相符。
32.划线句“trees like umbrellas”使用了明喻的修辞手法,把蘑菇树比作伞。结合选项可知,选项C“The girl was as brave as a lion when facing problems.”也用了明喻,把女孩比作狮子,和原句的修辞方式一致。
33.根据第三段“‘Yes. Axel,’ my uncle said, ‘and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!’”;第五段“With its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric.”;倒数第五段“Soon in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. ‘Mushrooms!’ said my uncle.”;倒数第三段“I hadn’t noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked.”以及倒数第二段“Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange thoughts.”
35.叔叔的话“I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!”表明,他因发现这片海而自豪。

F.This is especially true if you match volunteering to your interests.
G.Volunteering also offers you a chance to meet and connect with people.

26.What is culture shock?
A.A feeling of surprise when experiencing a new culture.
B.A type of illness.
C.A way of greeting.
D. A sudden change in weather patterns.
27.How do people in Germany feel about personal space?
A.They like to stand very close to strangers.
B.They like more personal space.
C.They don’t care about personal space.
D. They prefer to greet with a handshake.
28.How do people in Japan greet each other?
A.They shake hands. B.They bow. C.They kiss on the cheek. D. They bow.
29.Why is it rude to stick chopsticks into a bowl of rice in China?
A.Because it’s bad manners.
B.Because it reminds people of funeral rituals.
C.Because it’s difficult to eat that way.
D. Because it looks strange.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.All cultures are the same.
B.Cultural differences are interesting and worth learning about.
C.We should avoid visiting other countries.
D. Learning about cultural differences is a waste of time.
C

This true story shows how a single lesson could mean the difference between life and death. Thanks to her knowledge and quick thinking, one schoolgirl was able to save over 100 lives.

③ The security guard rushed people off the beach.

F.This is especially true if you match volunteering to your interests.
G.Volunteering also offers you a chance to meet and connect with people.
