Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·山东潍坊高新区·期末)
If you see “Biang”, a traditional Chinese character (繁体字), you may say no to learning Chinese as a second language. The first time I set my eyes on this character, 1 I said to myself, “Wow! Is it a drawing?” I wanted to know if I could write it well.
One day after school, one friend 2 me, “Henry, why not learn Chinese together?” He then led me to a classroom. There, I saw many students reading and writing. I sat confused (困惑的) with eyes wide open, 3 here and there. I tried to follow the teacher, but I 4 not say or write anything at all. All that I learned that day was to say “ni hao”.
That night, I returned home and thought a lot. Even though (即使) learning Chinese was 5 , it was kind of fun to get started. So I began practising it in my free time. 6 , I could just do it for 30 minutes. Then my head would get hot and I would get confused. Maybe friends would laugh at me when they saw me studying. But I didn’t 7 . I kept practising day by day.
A few weeks later, I could spend more time on it. I could pronounce and write some characters well. And my 8 about learning Chinese went away. Now, I can even understand a few words when a Chinese person speaks.
This is a great 9 , and I feel very excited about overcoming (克服) those difficulties. It was a mountain before me back then. 10 hard work really pays off. I find that Chinese is just as easy as any other language in the world.

One of my best friends, Elsa, hurried there with a large sized 7 in her hand. In it, there was some fruit, cookies, two coats and so on. I found neither of the coats was 8 for me.
