应选用getting into,与后文的“get involved”呼应。
根据“large or small”可知,此处是“whether...or...”
根据“At the first drumbeat...The second...By the third, they are already exhausted.”

Let’s make your own barometer (气压计). Then you can measure (测量) air pressure at home and predict the weather yourself!
1. Make the Rubber Cover
Scissor off 1/3 of the balloon’s bottom. Spread the left part. Pull it tight over the jar top. Press the balloon to make it smooth and tie it with a rubber band.
2. Fix the Straw Pointer Cut one straw-end at 45° for a sharp point. Tape the straw’s other end to the balloon’s center. Ensure it points straight—it’s your “pointer”!
3. Draw the Lines
Put an A4 paper in front of the straw’s sharp end. Mark the straw-pointing spot with a pencil. Use a ruler to make 4 lines each above and below this spot, 0.5 cm apart.
4. Name the Weather Signs Draw a sun next to the top mark, a cloud with raindrops next to the bottom mark. Place the whole device (装置) in a corner where it won’t be disturbed (打扰).
5. Observe and Record
Check the straw position daily at set times, and record where it points. If the straw points to the top mark, the weather will probably be dry and sunny. If it points to the bottom mark, it may rain. If it’s in the middle, it will probably stay the same.
How it works...
Warm air rising causes low pressure (common in rainy weather), and inside air pushes the balloon lid (盖子) out, and then, the moving straw pointer goes down. Sunny days opposite (相反).
14. Among all the following objects, which are needed in Step 1?
A. B. C. D.
15. According to the underlined part in Step 3, which of the following pictures is correct?
A. B. C. D.
16. How does the barometer work on Sunny days?
A. Low pressure outside → Balloon lid out → Pointer up
B. Low pressure outside → Balloon lid in → Pointer down
C. High pressure outside → Balloon lid out → Pointer down
D. High pressure outside → Balloon lid in → Pointer up
17. Which of the following statements about the homemade barometer is correct?
A. If the straw points to the bottom mark, the weather will probably be dry and sunny.
B. Warm air rising causes high pressure, which makes the straw pointer go down.
C. When the weather is sunny, the straw pointer points to the top mark.
D. We should place the device in the sun to get accurate results.
B 15. D 16. D 17. C
1. Make the Rubber Cover“Scissor off...the balloon’s bottom...over the jar top...with a rubber band.”,在Step 1中需要用到剪刀、气球、罐子和橡皮筋,对应图片B。
根据3. Draw the Lines“Use a ruler to make 4 lines each above and below this spot, 0.5 cm apart.”,在标记点的上方和下方“各画四条线”,每条线之间“相隔0.5厘米”,只有D图片符合。
根据最后一段“Warm air rising causes low pressure (common in rainy weather), and inside air pushes the balloon lid (盖子) out, and then, the moving straw pointer goes down. Sunny days opposite (相反).”,雨天会形成低气压,瓶内空气会把气球盖往外推,指针下降,晴天则相反,说明晴天是“高气压,外界空气会把气球盖向内压,指针上升”。
【17题详解】
根据5. Observe and Record“If the straw points to the top mark, the weather will probably be...sunny.”,当天气晴朗时,指针会指向顶部的标记。
C

And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help. ”After the words. Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house, She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here? ” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

A new year is finally here! Families across China gathered to watch the Spring Festival Gala on New Year’s Eve. Do you have a favourite programme?
A creative show titled Celebrating the Flower Deities attracted a lot of attention. Interestingly, the Seedance2.0 video model also played an important role. Let’s explore how it worked. The programme was inspired by a jade (玉器) artwork from the Qing Dynasty, now housed in the Palace Museum. The new piece was carved out of a single block of Hetian white jade. It is made up of twelve petal-shaped jade pendants (花瓣形玉佩) that form a flower. Each petal represents a different month and features a seasonal flower on the front, with a matching poetic phrase on the back. For example, January features plum blossoms, while June shows lotus flowers. A closer look reveals a movable centre made up of six small rings. It is created using an openwork technique What made the performance especially striking was the use of Seedance2.0, an AI-powered video model developed by ByteDance. Rather than serving as a backdrop, the visuals became part of the storytelling. The AI technology enabled flowers and landscapes to grow, disappear and change in real time with the performers’ movements. The twelve flower deities were brought vividly to life. It felt like stepping directly into the past and meeting these historical characters in person. The performance was a great success and was enjoyed by audiences, young and old. At the same time, it brought to mind a question that is often discussed today: as AI tools become increasingly powerful, how should they be used in art?
Perhaps Celebrating the Flower Deities offers a thoughtful example. It finds a balance. The result is neither purely digital nor entirely traditional, but a blend of both. Technology helps present the story in a new way. However, it is still humans who decide what story to tell and what meaning to share.
22. The detailed description of the jade artwork mainly serves to ________.
A. highlight that it is still a valuable piece of art today
B. provide background information for the performance
C. show the high level of craftsmanship of ancient artists
D. compare traditional art with modern AI technology
23. What was the role of Seedance2.0 in the creative show?
A. It replaced the traditional stage design with digital scenes.
B. It created moving visual effects that worked with the performers.
C. It explained the history of the jade masterpiece to the audience.
D. It designed the costumes of the twelve flower deities.
24. The underlined word “blend” in the last paragraph means ________.
A. a comparison to show differences
B. a competition between two sides
C. a combination of different elements
D. a replacement of one thing by another
25. What will probably be talked about next?
A. The advantages of modern art.
B. The role of AI in creative work.
C. Ways to survive in the digital age.
D. More details about the flower deities.
B 23. B 24. C 25. B

Sara K. is a big fan of wuxia, a classic Chinese storytelling genre full of adventure, honour and ____31____ (excite) martial arts. Although she is not Chinese, wuxia has opened a door for her to better understand Chinese culture. In fact, it has even made her much more active to study Chinese.
At its heart, wuxia combines two ideas: wu (martial arts) and xia (hero). These are not ordinary ____32____ (fight). Imagine a hero who can leap from rooftop to rooftop, glide through the air and defeat villains (反派) with a flash of a sword (剑).
But a“xia”is not simply someone who fights well. A true “xia” stands up for ____33____ is right and helps those in need. I can also look up the herbs used and learn something about traditional Chinese medicine and botany. ” Wuxia stories can be traced back thousands of years, but they remain popular today in books, movies, comics and games. Some take place in real ____39____(history) times, while others use a more imaginative “China-inspired” setting. Most wuxia stories take place in a world called the jianghu. It is not a real location on a map, but a kind of “martial world” beyond official society, where swordsmen and wanderers (漂泊者) live by ____40____ (they) own rules.
In the jianghu, strength matters—but character matters even more. It is in this world that wuxia heroes grow, struggle and learn what it really means to be heroic.

There is more ocean on our planet than there is land. The first ship sailed (航海) all the way around the world about five hundred years ago. And the first journey to the deep sea floor was no more than one hundred years ago. Today the ocean is still strange to us. We are making efforts to explore (A) it.
To early sailors, the ocean was a scary place, full of dangerous living things. They thought that, deep below, the ocean was a cold, dark and lifeless place. Ocean exploration was also stopped by the conditions below. The huge pressure of the water would break an unprotected diver. That was why people needed special equipment.
In 1872, the first ship for ocean exploration set out on a four-year trip around the world. It carried the best scientific equipment of the time. An underwater mountain chain and more than 4,000 new kinds of living things were discovered. The results of this journey were important, which encouraged further exploration. In 1934, two divers dived half a mile below the surface of the ocean in the submersible (潜水器) they designed for deep-sea diving. People could see the underwater world with their own eyes. Since then, improvements have been made in diving equipment, allowing people to travel deeper for a longer time.
In recent years, China’s ocean exploration (B) has taken off rapidly. Many manned deep-sea submersibles have completed thousands of dives since they were designed and developed independently by China. Fendouzhe, for example, can take humans to depths of over 10,000 meters and collect materials for research.
The work of deep-sea explorers has given us a picture of life far below the surface. There is now greater understanding of the life in the ocean. (C)We have realized our dependence on healthy oceans and that there’s still a lot remaining to be discovered in the ocean. What hasn’t been seen yet?

As time passed by, humans realized that diving equipment was of huge ________ for further exploration. They couldn’t reach the sea floor ________ they had special equipment. Humans made efforts to improve it. Nowadays, we Chinese completely depend on ourselves and design some well-known submersibles such as Fendouzhe. Still, a lot of unknown things in the ocean remain to be seen.

Less Stress, Better Life
Nowadays, we teenagers have a lot of stress while growing up. The main reasons for this are heavy schoolwork and high expectations from parents. They hope we can always get good grades, which makes us feel nervous and tired.
To reduce stress, we can ask our teachers for help when we have trouble with our studies. Also, doing sports and listening to music can help us relax. Besides, sharing our worries with friends or family members is another good way.
In my opinion, stress is not always bad because it encourages us to work harder. However, we should learn to deal with it properly and live a happier life.

“Don’t try to change me.” ____26____ It is often used by people who regard change as a kind of attack (攻击) on their identity (身份). Any suggestion of improvement or an idea of reading a self-help book seems like they are not being accepted just the way they are. But is there a person in this world who never changes during their whole life?
If you think about it, change is something that is happening to us every day. Our experiences and the challenges we face, the people we meet on our way, and the things we watch, read or hear all influence us one way or the other, making us change gradually. ____27____ I believe that intentional (有意的) change in the form of self-improvement is something to be proud of.
____28____ We don’t trust the things that we know little about because we are not sure about the result they will bring. After years of being stuck in the same habits and patterns of thinking, we may be afraid of breaking the normal way we do things.
How does one break this cycle? ____29____ In order for anyone to change, they have to truly want it and make that decision on their own. Once they do, what they need is to find good ways to make an achievement. ____30____ Think about what can be done differently in the future instead of repeating the same behaviors and expecting a different result.

C. You may feel great after changing yourself.
D. Because life is not always staying the same.

Sara K. is a big fan of wuxia, a classic Chinese storytelling genre full of adventure, honour and ____31____ (excite) martial arts.
To explain the idea, Sara gives a fun example. “Batman’s Chinese name is 蝙蝠侠 and Spiderma’s Chinese name is 蜘蛛侠,” she writes in ____34____ article for other non-Chinese readers. Still, she believes wuxia is something special. “Any comparison ____35____ wuxia and non-Chinese fiction must be limited,” she explains, “because wuxia ____36____ (begin) in the Chinese-speaking world and could not have begun anywhere else.” This is true, because wuxia connects ____37____ (close) with many parts of Chinese culture. It draws on history, values, medicine, nature, philosophy (哲学), hopes and dreams. “For example,” Sara says, “I can look up the various places ____38____ (mention) in the novels and improve my understanding of Chinese geography.

44. Fill in the blanks according to the passage. (One word for each blank)
Although most of the earth’s surface is covered by the ocean, the history of ocean exploration is not
________ enough. In the early days, terrible conditions deep below the ocean stopped humans from exploring. Also, divers didn’t have certain equipment to ________ themselves.
