One of my favorite great books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. 1 It tells some exciting stories about a boy who has many adventures.
Tom, the hero of the book, lives with his aunt. 2 He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always gets into trouble. He and his best friend, Huck Finn, run away to an island in the middle of Mississippi River. Tom has more trouble because a bad man named Injun Joe is looking for him. Later, Tom runs away with another friend Becky. He also finds Injun Joe’s treasure box and takes it away.
3 At first, they are happy. But when they hear that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry, so they come back home. They hide and watch for a time when they see their family and neighbors coming to their funeral (葬礼). Then, Tom and Huck suddenly appear. Everyone is surprised to see them at first, but very pleased to find that they are alive.

Do you often forget important things? Do you wish you could remember facts and names more easily? Good news! There are simple ways to improve your memory. Here are some tips:
Exercise your body to help your brain.
6 It’s great for your brain too! Studies show that regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which helps your memory work better. Try running, swimming, or even dancing for 30 minutes a day.
Play memory-improving games properly.
Surprisingly, playing certain video games (like puzzles or strategy games) for about 1~2 hours a week can train your brain to remember better. 7 And they can make your memory stronger.
Eat brain-boosting foods regularly.
Foods like blueberries (which contain antioxidants), broccoli (rich in vitamin K), and nuts (with healthy fats) protect your brain cells. 8 It is said that eating these foods 3~4 times a week is a wise choice.
9 When you’re stressed, your body produces cortisol (皮质醇), a hormone (激素) that can damage brain cells over time. Simple activities like taking 10 deep breaths, listening to calming music for 15 minutes, or walking in a park can lower your stress levels.
Get enough sleep every night.
10 Teenagers who get 8~10 hours of quality sleep each night perform better on memory tests than those who don’t sleep enough.

Have you ever traveled to Africa , India or other places where there are elephants ? You’ve probably seen tours letting you get close to elephants and even offering you rides. 11 We are here to explain why you can’t do that.
12 Many people in Southeast Asia buy and sell elephants illegally (非法地). But elephants are wild animals. Humans have no right (权利) to do that.
Elephants are smart and live in groups. They have families and friends. They beat them badly or even don’t allow them to eat or sleep. 14
Although elephants have large bodies , their spines (脊椎) are not fit to carry humans. And many of them die as a result of years of carrying humans on their backs and working.
15 The UN says that only about 35, 000 Asian elephants are left in the wild now. Riding elephants is one of the main reasons that lead the animals to die out.

Today we finished our two-week study of movies and plays. 21
When we began these lessons, all I knew was that movies and plays are fun to watch. Like most people, I always focused on the actors or actresses. I thought they were the most important people in the show. 22
Actors are only a small part of a movie or a play. It can take hundreds of people to make a movie or put on a play. We hardly ever think about the people who work behind the scenes. 23 Without their hard work, we would never get to know so many great stories and stars!
24 They all did wonderful work. One group made a movie that was a comedy. Their movie made the whole class laugh. They are talented movie makers. My group performed a play called The Fisherman and the Goldfish.
Ms. Cox, our teacher, was really happy with our projects. 25 Writing, creating, directing and acting in our own show was an experience we will never forget.

Who help you most in your everyday life, families, charities, or friends? Don't forget about your neighbours! Neighbours help you more than anyone else in your daily life. 6
What does it take to be a good neighbour? Here is some advice:
7 . One of the most important things in being a good neighbour is to respect a person’s privacy (隐私). If you go rushing over as soon as new neighbours move in, they may think you are going to come over at all hours of the day, not respecting their privacy.
8 This can not only help you get on with them, but will also be a kind of protection for your family and home. 9 If you are friendly to them, they are much more likely to watch out for anything wrong going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens.
Another way of being a good neighbour is to be helpful in their hour of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand, it is good to offer your help. 10
In a word, if you respect a person's privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbour and anyone would be happy to have you next door!
A. Good fences (栅栏) make good neighbours.
B. They will do the same if you are in trouble.
C. So it is important to have good neighbours.
D. It is always a good idea to be friendly to everyone in the neighbourhood.
E. Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the neighbour if you are in trouble.
F. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out to work, they will think you respect them.

Passage 3
(2025八年级下·四川成都·期末)
What are some unusual or challenging jobs that you’ve ever heard of? What do you think smokejumpers do? 11 These fires burn millions of hectares (公顷) of forest land. Homes are destroyed and thousands of people die. Smokejumpers help to stop this.
12 They jump from planes or are lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such as the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire area, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop fire progression until other firefighters arrive. Using basic equipment such as shovels and axes smokejumpers clear land of burnable material, like dry grass and dead trees. 13
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important conditions are your height and weight. Smokejumpers in the United States, for example, must be between 120 and 200 pounds (between 54 and 91 kilograms) so they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. 14 In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees, such as chairs, tables, and beds.
15 But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest, helping others out of fire even at the risk of their lives. As 28-year-old Russian smokejumper Alexi Tishin says, “This is the best job for tough guys (硬汉).”
A. The work is dangerous, and the hours are long.
B. Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighter.
C. They carry water with them, too, but only a small amount.
D. The first smokejumper unit was set up in the U. S. in 1939.
E. There are thousands of wildfires around the world every year.
F. Smokejumpers must also be able to survive (存活) in the wilderness.

I really like jazz, but I’m not an expert. Some people think it’s unusual because not many young people and teenagers listen to jazz. 21
When I was little, my dad introduced me to the music. He knew many different kinds of music, but he introduced me to jazz most. 22 He was happily tapping and humming jazz tunes when he drove. I only half-listened while playing my computer games.
23 I would say in 8th grade, when I decided to join the school jazz band (thanks, Dad). Every day after school, our band would meet for 45 minutes and play many tunes. That really opened my eyes to different types of jazz music. And I can tell you that jazz is much harder to play than concert band music. If you want to show your skills, you should join a jazz band.
24 Our school had two jazz bands, Jazz 1 and Jazz 2. Jazz 2 was for less able players, while Jazz 1 was the School’s flagship jazz band. It played at many events and took part in competitions. I was in Jazz 2 for my first two years and moved up to Jazz 1 in my third year.
Two years into college, my love for jazz has only grown. 25 I’ve even started my own column (专栏) on the genre. Thanks to jazz, I’ve become who I am today.
A. What’s your idea?
B. So why do I love it?

Have you ever heard of the word “kidult”? It means an adult who buys children’s toys to play with. Take Anna Jones for example. In the past, people would typically stop playing with toys once they grew up. But things are different now. 32 In fact, most soft toy buyers are between the ages of 18 and 24.

In children’s books, endings are usually happy. Although people in the books often face dangers or challenges, everything always ends well. 46
Some people think children’s books should have happy endings. 47 And we can read happy stories to get away from the real world, which may be sad and hard to understand.
If someone starts to enjoy reading but feels unhappy at the end of a book, they might not want to read more. If your first reading experiences are full of happy feelings, you’ll want to keep reading. 48 The story can still be interesting and exciting even if you know it will end well.
But there’s another point. Sad endings can help us get used to real life. Happy endings are usually too simple, and life isn’t always happy—it has both good and hard times. 49 This helps us deal with such feelings in real life.
Some experts also say feeling sad in stories can make us better understanding others’ emotions, which is called “empathy”(同情). 50 Also, happy endings might miss the thrill of not knowing what will happen. Sad stories can be more exciting because you wonder how things will end!
What’s your opinion? Should children’s books always end happily?
A. It will make us help our friends who are feeling sad.
B. Happy endings are more useful words than sad endings.
C. However, a happy ending doesn’t mean the story is boring.
D. Books with sad endings can let us feel sadness in a safe way.
E. The heroes might reach their goals, beat bad guys, or find true love.

(2026八年级下·四川遂宁·期末)
Have you ever traveled to Africa , India or other places where there are elephants ? You’ve probably seen tours letting you get close to elephants and even offering you rides. 11 We are here to explain why you can’t do that.
12 Many people in Southeast Asia buy and sell elephants illegally (非法地). But elephants are wild animals. Humans have no right (权利) to do that.
Elephants are smart and live in groups. They have families and friends. They can feel pain (痛苦), and they can also feel sad and happy. 13 So in order to control them , humans take baby elephants away from their family and train them in pretty bad ways.
A. Elephants eat lots of food every day.
B. Asian elephants are already in danger.
C. Wild elephants don’t let humans ride on top of them.
D. These all cause a lot of hurt on their bodies and spirit.
E. But zoologists advise that we should not ride an elephant.

S. in 1939.

Body image (身体意象) is the way you feel about your body. Children who have a healthy body image feel good about their bodies. They are happy with how they look, how their body moves and grows, and what their body can do. Having a good body image helps kids feel confident. 16 It starts in babyhood. It builds as kids grow. It changes when kids go through puberty (青春期).
Little children seem naturally happy with their bodies. 17 Once they can stand and walk, they feel proud when they can do things “all by myself”.
As kids grow, they can build good feelings about their bodies. Sometimes it shows. They smile at themselves in the mirror. They like how they look in a favorite coat or new haircut.

Have you ever heard of the word “kidult”? It means an adult who buys children’s toys to play with. Take Anna Jones for example. This 23-year-old woman travelled all the way from London to New York just to buy an unusual soft toy. Although she already had 35 of them, she wanted to collect more. She said, “ 31 ”
In the past, people would typically stop playing with toys once they grew up. But things are different now. 32 In fact, most soft toy buyers are between the ages of 18 and 24.
33 However, Professor Joshua Dale doesn’t think so. He says cute toys can make adults happy. Kidults love them because they want to feel less worried. “It’s hard to feel happy today with so much going on in the world.” Dale says, “If you look at cute toys, though, they might cheer you up. 34 ”
This doesn’t say that young people are childish, either. “There is a difference between ‘childish’ and ‘childlike’,” Dale explains. “ 35 But being childlike means having a feeling of interest and wonder, wanting to learn new things. These are good qualities. Bringing childlike things into your daily life as an adult can be good for you.”

Now students’ English handwriting (书写) gets worse and worse, making their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? 41 .
Use paper with lines
When you write English words or sentences, you can use paper with lines, which will make your handwriting straight. 42 . Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure these capital letters (大写字母) are written properly.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, just slow down a little. 43 . If you write too quickly, it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and you may make more mistakes easily. 44
When you hold (握住) your pencil in the correct way, writing is much better. Some kids press down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting bad. Try to be relaxed and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.
Draw more pictures
45 . While you are drawing pictures, you need to use the skills to control (控制) your pencil better. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by drawing at home. Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs (亲笔签名), of course!
A. Drawing pictures is good at handwriting

Passage 10
(2025八年级下·四川巴中·期末)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
