Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work in Minneapolis. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window .
“Hey!" she shouted .“ I’m driving around giving free haircuts. If I go grab my chair, do you want one right now ?” The man looked to be in his 60s. He was balding, and missing a few teeth. As Steller liked to tel the story, he laughed, then paused. “Actually ,” he said , “I have a funeral to go to this week. I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
Steller pulled out a red chair from her car and helped the man cut his hair immediately. After the work was finished, Edward looked in a mirror." I look good !” he said.
Until last year, Steller had given such haircuts to people living on the margins (边缘) around the city. She was keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job. “It’s more than a haircut,” she said.” I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships.” Steller knew that a haircut could change a life. One changed hers: As a teen, she suffered from a severe disease, her hair thinned drastically. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut.
“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she said.
After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Then she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets. Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.

Several years on, China’s traditional health craze is showing no sign of slowing down. While jujube ice cream and herbal bubble teas have each had their 15 minutes of fame, now a bar in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu thinks it’s found the next viral trend: traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cocktails.
Priced around 100 yuan ($13.80) per glass, the drinks on offer at the newly opened Soul Asylum claim a wide range of effects, from weight loss to nourishing(滋养) a person’s blood. Soul Asylum’s owner Liu says he consulted a local TCM doctor for the recipes and sourced the required materials from a TCM specialty medicine store, immersing them in grain alcohol for over three months. “I talked to TCM doctors, and they said mixing medicinal wine with other alcohol is not a problem,” Liu added.
Liu isn’t the first bar owner to capitalize on a growing interest in healthy lifestyles, or yangsheng, among young Chinese. TCM-themed establishments have popped up nationwide in recent years. Some, like Liu’s, offer TCM cocktails like “Boss’ Chicken Soup” — featuring angelica(白芷) root, ginseng(人参), and gin(杜松子酒). Others, like a bar in the eastern city of Jinan, nod to TCM with herbal ingredients and traditionally inspired names, but don’t claim any medicinal properties.
But TCM experts caution some yangsheng offerings may overpromise and underdeliver. They can also land their creators in legal trouble: China’s Food Safety Law also specify that only medicinal substances that are traditionally both eaten and used in Chinese medicines can be added to food. Wu Meiling, a lawyer warned that bars that use unapproved ingredients can face fines, the cancellation of their licenses, or even criminal responsibility.
Liu, told Cover News that the drinks are meant to promote health rather than treat diseases. He said he hoped the media attention would raise awareness that a night out doesn’t have to be unhealthy.“When you go out at night, it doesn’t have to hurt,” he said. “It can be yangsheng.”
( ) 8. Why does the author mention jujube ice cream and herbal bubble teas?
A. To explain how China’s health craze starts.
B. To illustrate China’s traditional health craze.
C. To compare different traditional health crazes.
D. To highlights the diversity of China’s health craze.
( ) 9. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. They are Liu’s original creation.
B. They meet various health needs.
C. The ingredients are used without processing.
D. The materials are sourced from a local doctor.
( ) 10. Which is closest in meaning to “capitalize on” in paragraph 3?
A. Place value on B. Show interest in C.Take advantage of D. Pour money into
( ) 11. What can we know about TCM drinks?
A. They live up to advertised health claims.
B. Their components are approved by TCM experts.
C. Their popularity is declining due to legal concerns.
D. They reflect the pursuit of balancing nightlife and health.

A cactus, the flesh of which is a water source for many desert animals. Native to the Americas, cacti of all shapes and sizes have evolved to not just survive, but thrive, in some of the harshest climates on Earth. So how do they do it?
A normal leaf’s large surface area would be ill-suited to the desert, transpiring(蒸发)massive amounts of water under the baking sun. The dramatically reduced surface area of the cactus’ spines limits water loss. They also shade the cactus and reflect the sun’s rays, reducing the plant's core temperature during the heat of the day. Then, at night, when air temperatures drop, the spines act as a insulating layer (保温层), keeping the cactus from cooling down too much.
As far south as Brazil and Peru, Melon cacti grow in seasonally dry tropical forests, where they're constantly exposed to the beating sun. They rely on a thick skin coated in a waxy substance that limits water loss. The main part of the plant acts as a large barrel of water, storing it for times of need.
But in the desert, a cactus can’t just limit water loss— it has to be prepared to take full advantage of the rare situations where water is readily available. In North America’s Sonoran Desert, the towering Saguaro cactus can grow up to 20 meters tall and live for up to 200 years with less water than most trees. Most of its roots are only a few inches deep, which spread out sideways for meters and hold the plant in place. After a rain, its rain roots produced from side roots rapidly grow and spread, quickly taking up the available water. The water is then pulled up into the plant body and stored. As the soil dries, the cactus awaits the next time it can take advantage of a shower.
Taken together, these features make cacti well-equipped for their environments. Even in the rainforest with lots of water around, the cactus lives long using adaptations that long ago helped its ancestors survive the desert.
( ) 12. Which of the following is of the similar function of the cacti spine?
A. The waxy substance B. The roots C. The thick skin D. The large leaves
( ) 13. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A cactus makes good use of water anytime
Saguaro cactus live on more water than most trees
A cactus’ rain roots absorb the water after the rain
A cactus rain roots are produced when the soil dries
( ) 14. How does the author present the characteristics of cacti?
A. By clarifying a concept B. By analyzing the causes
C. By making a comparison D. By providing examples
( ) 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Cacti: king of the desert
B. Cacti: a new solution to the desert
C. Nature’s secret: how cacti keep water in?
D. Survival of the fittest: can cacti thrive forever?

Smile-It's Good For You!
Research reveals that showing you're happy can enhance both physical and mental health. Here are several amazing health benefits of smiling.
Smiling's a stress reliever
A University of Kansas study found that participants who were asked to smile during stressful tasks had lower heart rates during stress recovery. So it seems even forcing yourself to look happy helps to manage tricky situations. 16
It may lower blood pressure
The fact that smiling reduces your heart rate when you're stressed is also likely to have a knock-on effect on blood pressure. Other research has shown that blood pressure doesn't rise when people are exposed to humour.
Beaming boosts immunity
A smile releases certain hormones in the brain, including serotonin, which is associated with an improvement in immune function. 17 Depression, meanwhile, can weaken your immune system.
A smile can sooth your pain
Being amused also prompts the release of endorphins in the brain. 18 In one study, participants who smiled while being injected reported 40 per cent less pain.
Looking happy encourages positivity
It seems smiling really can boost your mood, rather than simply being a response to feeling happy. A 2022 study of 3,878 participants in 19 countries found people's happiness rating was higher when they smiled.
19
The research backs it up. A 2010 study from Washington State University found that pre-1950s major league baseball players who had the broadest smile in photos lived longer.
20 It helps you build close relationships with people around you. If you practise enough, it'll become second nature. Give yourself cues to remind you to smile-when you see someone laughing or you're making a cup of tea—or put a note on your phone as a reminder.
A. Smile and live longer
B. Smiling brings us many benefits
C. That is to say, smiling can help us stay healthy.
D. So smiling regularly can protect us from illness.
E. Smiling is also a good way to get on well with others.
F. Endorphins are natural painkillers produced by our body.
G. When you feel upset, forcing a smile makes you more tired.

A Teenager Inspirational Story
I would like to share my personal story which happened after my 8th standard. I used to be in the top 5 students in my class but couldn't make it to 1st or 2nd till then. One day when I was moving along with my friend Hussain (topper of our class) and met one of our seniors on the way. In our discussion, my friend said, "Ali doesn't get good marks though he studies for hours, but I get 1st rank even without studying much."
I felt very embarrassed, enraged, and hopeless at the very moment because I didn't know what to do. So I decided to study hard in a spirit to cross him. I gave my final exams and went to my aunt's home for holidays with a positive hope. Exactly after 1 month, my mother called me to say the result. I was very excited. After I talked to my mother, I could only feel the wetness of my shirt, which later I understood were my tears rolling down. I cried the whole day in despair as I got 560/600 and the highest was 590/600.
All that I could remember is the words uttered by my friend. I can feel the pain even while writing the experience now. I felt like someone hitting me continuously with a bat. I just decided to study hard, very hard, just to show him what I am. I used to study even in the break times, games hour, what not... every time. And finally, I got 5 times 1st rank and a 2nd rank in my 9th class, breaking the existing school record (595/600) in my final exam. That point became my turning point in my life till now. I scored a CGPA of 10 in my tenth class. I am presently pursuing my Bachelor of Technology 2nd year in Civil engineering at IIT Kharagpur.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Dramatically,I met Hussain at the campus of II T Kharagpur.
I am very thankful to my friend for uttering such words.

A 篇阅读
I’m driving around giving free haircuts. If I go grab my chair, do you want one right now ?
Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.
B. A Beautiful Salon(一家漂亮的理发店)。 C. The Good Belief(美好的信念)。 D. The Miracle of Love(爱的奇迹)。
对应原文a wide range of effects, from weight loss to nourishing blood,可合理推断,正确。
Place value on 重视;B. Show interest in 对…… 感兴趣;C. Take advantage of 利用;D. Pour money into 投资。综上选 C。
A. A cactus makes good use of water anytime(仙人掌随时都能充分利用水分)。 B. Saguaro cactus live on more water than most trees(巨人柱仙人掌比大多数树木需水量更大)。原文明确 with less water than most trees,与原文相悖,错误。C. A cactus’ rain roots absorb the water after the rain(降雨后,仙人掌的降雨根吸收水分)。原文 After a rain, its rain roots... quickly taking up the available water D. A cactus rain roots are produced when the soil dries(土壤变干时长出降雨根)。
So how do they do it?(仙人掌如何在恶劣环境存活),核心落脚点是保水机制。 A. B. Cacti: a new solution to the desert(仙人掌:沙漠的新解法):原文未提及仙人掌可改造沙漠,无中生有,排除。C. D. Survival of the fittest: can cacti thrive forever?(适者生存:仙人掌能永远繁盛吗?):文章未探讨 “能否永久生存” 这一问题,偏离主旨,排除。

36. selection 37. have been chosen 38. will arrive 39. them 40. to enter
41. and 42. As 43. signed 44. profoundly 45. humans

Sharing Makes the World Better
Dear teachers and fellow students,
I’m glad to give a speech about China's foreign aid.
China always reaches out to countries in difficulty. We help construct railways and hospitals in poor regions, share farming skills to increase crop output, and donate medical materials during health crises. Besides, we offer scholarships to foreign students and promote cultural exchanges.
Such kindness fully reflects the spirit of sharing. It bridges gaps and strengthens friendship across nations. Helping others also brings mutual progress and peace.
As teenagers, we should learn to share and care. Let us pass on warmth and work together for a more harmonious world.
Thank you!

Dramatically, I met Hussain at the campus of IIT Kharagpur. He seemed rather surprised to see me there. He smiled and introduced me to his classmates, “This is Ali, an outstanding student from our senior high school. He used to study extremely hard.” Smiling back at him, I said, “Yeah, I studied hard, really hard, just to prove myself. I used to study even during break times and game hours, all the time.” “And look at you now! My friend, you made it! You're one of the few students who got into IIT in the 26-year history of our school! I'm proud of you!” Hussain came forward and gave me a hug.
I am very thankful to my friend for uttering such words. His words that seemed to doubt my ability were the main reason that drove me to my present position. I hugged Hussain back and said, “Thank you! It was your words that made me study even harder.” “Sorry for the pain I caused you years ago.” He looked into my eyes, his eyes filled with regret. “It's okay! My friend. Thank you for your introduction now. Let's strive together to create our own success here!” Now, whenever I face difficulties in my studies or life, I recall that moment and find the strength to keep going, knowing that challenges can be transformed into stepping stones to success.
