Two years ago, David stopped his thirty year job as a firefighter, but he still showed great bravery and eagerness to act when the situation demanded IT. One morning while out for a run, David noticed smoke rising out of a house without a second thought. He immediately called his former colleagues for assistance. However, as he heard cries for help, David rushed inside the burning building. David successfully rescued three members of the loyd family and their dog, tom. His bravery and self lessons caught the attention and earned the praise of not only the head of his former fire department, but also the chief of police in our city. I strongly recommend that David be honored with this prize. I kindly request all of you, ladies and gentlemen, to rise and join me in giving David the welcome as he takes the stage. Last weekend, our school English club organized a “Chinese Traditions” themed exhibition. The event started with a short speech introducing famous Chinese festivals, such as the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. We learned about their history and cultural significance.
After that, students displayed traditional clothing, snacks, and handicrafts. There were also interactive activities, including calligraphy, paper-cutting, and a tea ceremony. Visitors could try writing Chinese characters, making paper-cuts, or tasting Chinese tea. I gave a short talk about the Spring Festival, sharing how families celebrate it together.
The exhibition was lively and interesting. I felt proud to introduce our culture to others and amazed by my classmates’ creativity. It was a great chance to learn more about Chinese traditions and share them with friends.

One possible version:
On Sunday morning, Doris woke up, still feeling sad. She lay in bed for a long time, unwilling to get up. Finally, Doris pulled herself out of bed. She walked downstairs, expecting to find her mum, but instead, there was only a note on the kitchen table, reading “Happy Birthday, Doris! Come to the park at 11:00. Love, Mum.” The note wasn’t quite what Doris had expected. No balloons, no cake, just a simple note. She felt a little annoyed, but she decided to go to the park anyway, figuring that maybe Mum had something planned there.
Curiously, Doris arrived at the park with Mum’s note. When she arrived, she was met with the sight of all her friends, gathered in a circle, balloons in hands. Grandma stood at the front, holding a big cake with seven candles. Just as Doris stepped into the middle, all of them shouted “Surprise!” She couldn’t believe it! Everyone had remembered her birthday after all! Mum approached and hugged her tightly. “Doris, you’re the most special in my life. Today we just wanted to remind you how much you mean to us.” Doris smiled through tears, feeling deeply loved on her most special day ever.

From these, a Top 10 is chosen (if chosen by several judges), who receive a $ 1,000 cash prize each and their works are shown in a major international show in London, together with other benefits, such as online shows, press reports, and connections with industry professionals.

For most of Natalie Grabow’s life, she didn’t know how to swim. At 59, she made a brave decision to learn the skill, driven by a bigger goal: to finish a triathlon (铁人三项). “Swimming was my biggest problem to solve,” she said later. Step by step, she overcame (克服) her fear of water and built the skills she needed.
Over the next 20 years, Grabow turned her dream into action. As a former software engineer, she had long loved running, but injuries often held her back. The cross-training part of triathlon felt perfect for her, as it lowered the risk of harm. She trained hard and soon won several shorter half-triathlon races, growing stronger with each challenge.
By age 80, Grabow was ready for the world’s toughest test: the Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. On race day, she jumped into the ocean to swim 2.4 miles, then rode her bike 112 miles past hot lava (熔岩) fields and windy coast roads. She finished with a full marathon run that climbed over 1,000 feet, crossing the line in 16 hours and 45 minutes — well before the time limit, while more than 60 younger athletes failed to finish. She became the oldest woman ever to complete the race.
For Grabow, her successful finish puts a strong ending on a 20- year journey. “I am so happy and grateful that I can still race in this sport at my age,” Grabow says. “Triathlon allows me to feel strong both in my mind and body, and it also keeps my competitive spirit alive.”
Asked whether she has any tips for new athletes, Grabow keeps it simple. “Listen to your body, rest when you need to, and most importantly, just appreciate the journey,” she says. For her, the sport is not just about winning, but about growing stronger, staying curious, and never stopping trying new things.
24. What pushed Grabow to learn swimming at 59?
A. To be a good coach. B. To complete a big event.
C. To improve her health. D. To reduce the fear of water.
25. Why did Grabow choose the cross- training part of triathlon?
A. It was more popular.
B. She was tired of running.
C. It was less likely to get hurt.
D. She wanted to challenge herself.
26. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Preparations for the race. B. Grabow’s race process.
C. Rules of the Championship. D. Grabow’s running strategy.
27. What suggestion does Grabow give for new athletes?
A. Enjoy the journey. B. Keep going without rest.
C. Follow your hobby. D. Stay a competitive spirit.

An upcoming wearable device (设备) for the blind could help them move around public and outdoor spaces on their own, acting as “glasses” that guide them. The glasses are actually a headset, similar to the ones you might wear for VR (Virtual Reality) experiences. Unlike those headsets, this one doesn’t show any pictures. Instead, it delivers soft shakes on your forehead, along with sound from built- in speakers, to guide you through public areas.
The device is noticeable in design. It has a sizeable sensor fixed on the forehead, a camera set in the front, and a large battery group at the back. It supports up to two hours of use on a single charge, and the whole package weighs 1 kg. The AI- powered system works out sensor readings (传感器读数) over 100 times a second. It helps the device understand where you’re walking and what’s in front of you, so you can avoid things that block the way.
You can use your voice to ask for guidance to specific places. You can set locations like “home” or “work” in advance, and the device will understand simple instructions like “take me to my office”, then lead you all the way to the right building.
The device may take the place of a guide dog, which is perhaps the best possible choice for blind people to find their way around. But that means a long wait and requires the blind to take on the big responsibility of caring for the dog over several years.
So far, the company has invited more than 400 blind users in over 40 countries to test the glasses in real environments. If the device can deliver on its promise, it will provide a new level of personal freedom to people around the world living with blindness.
28. What does the device depend on to guide the blind through public areas?
A. A VR headphone. B. Shakes and sound.
C. A separate speaker. D. Pictures and videos.
29. What can we learn about the device from paragraph 2?
A. Its design is quite ordinary.
B. It can sense walking speed.
C. It can check road conditions.
D. Its battery can last very long.
30. Why does the author mention a guide dog?
A. To promote the use of a guide dog.
B. To stress the weakness of the device.
C. To show a possible future of the device.
D. To tell the difficulty in raising a guide dog.
31. What does the underlined word “promise” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Test service. B. Real situations.
C. Technology support. D. Expected functions.

People have believed for many years that horses can “smell fear,” and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horse calm. Past studies have found that horses pick up human emotions from our facial expressions and voices. Recently, a team of researchers set out to see if horses can sense people’s emotions from smell alone.
In the study, 30 people were asked to watch videos of happy scenes while cotton pads (棉花垫) under their arms collected their sweat. Then, with new pads under their arms, they watched a frightening film. The researchers then divided 43 horses into three groups. Each group wore muzzles (口套) over their nose and mouth with different pads: one with a pad of happy sweat, one with sweat from the frightened, and one with a clean pad.
The team then tested the horses to see how they reacted to unexpected events, such as an umbrella being opened near them or an unfamiliar object being placed in front of them. Horses that wore the “fear” muzzle acted more frightened. Their hearts beat faster, they were more likely to startle (受惊), and they were less likely to be curious about the new object or approach humans.
“The fearful smells from humans amplify the reactions of horses,” lead study author Plotine Jardat said. “The significance is that horses can smell how we feel, even if they can’t hear or see us.”
The researchers hope that better understanding horses’ emotions can help people interact more positively with the animals and improve horse health and happiness. Stressed or frightened horses often react with behavior that can be dangerous, such as kicking or running away, so knowing the importance of remaining calm can also keep humans safer around these animals.

Fear of public speaking is a common form of worry. But by preparing and practicing, you can get over your fear.
Know your topic. The better you understand what you’re talking about — and the more you care about the topic — the less likely you’ll make a mistake or get off track. 36
Get organized. 37 This includes any tools and pictures or videos. The more organized you are, the less nervous you’ll be. Use an outline on a small card to stay on track.
38 Do it for some people you’re comfortable with and ask for advice. It also may help to practice with a few people who you don’t know well. You can make a video of your presentation so you can watch it and see ways to improve.
Focus on your material, not the audience. People mainly pay their attention to new information — not how it’s presented. In fact, when presenters are anxious, they tend to overjudge just how much others can tell they’re stressed. 39 If audience members do notice you’re worried, they may encourage you and want your speech to be a success.
Don’t fear a moment of silence. If you lose track of what you’re saying or your mind goes empty, it may seem like you’ve been silent for ages. 40 Even if it’s longer, it’s likely your audience won’t mind a break to think about what you’ve been saying. Just take a few slow, deep breaths.
A. Practice your presentation several times.
B. In fact, it’s probably only a few seconds.
C. See if any of your specific worries come true.
D. The audience may not notice how nervous you are.
E. Take two or more deep, slow breaths during your speech.
F. And if you do get lost, you’ll be able to get back on track quickly.
G. Ahead of time, carefully plan out the information you want to present.

A Special Day
Next Sunday was Doris’s seventh birthday. She loved being showered with love and attention on her birthday. She would start her special day answering birthday messages and calls. Then she would meet her friends at the ice-cream store and enjoy a free ice cream and small sweets. At lunchtime, she’d go home for one of her favourite meals, prepared by Mum. In the afternoon, her grandma would have biscuits and hot chocolate ready at her house.
“Could we have noodles with chicken next Sunday?” she asked Mum. “I’m sorry, no.” Her mother looked serious. Doris was surprised. Mum had never refused her. “How about sweet-and-salty meatballs?” Mum shook her head. Doris felt quite disappointed by this second refusal. It was a family tradition that the birthday person could choose the menu. She was sure Mum had forgotten that next Sunday was her birthday.
How could she forget it? Her birthday had been on the same day for seven years. If her own mother had forgotten her birthday, would her friends remember?
By the time Doris arrived at the playground, she believed that nobody would remember her birthday, though she always remembered theirs. “Are we meeting next Sunday?” she asked her friends as a test. One after another, they all refused. Doris was sure her friends, too, had forgotten her birthday.
Upset, she decided to visit her grandma. Would she, the woman who was certainly there at her birth, forget her birthday? Grandma was very happy to see her, and they chatted about many things — except her birthday. Even when Doris was leaving, she didn’t say anything. “Did my dearest grandma now feel that my birthday was too small to celebrate?” The thought annoyed Doris and she spent the rest of the week, unhappy.

1.写作词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
