Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also since then, I’ve read more books, seen more unpleasant comments on stories written by strangers online, and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work because — shocker — what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else’s? Writing became something I had to be good at in order to share. Hobbies often start as fun activities to do with friends. But as time goes on, you might find yourself doing something for years without noticeable improvement, leading to stress. Why do we feel we must excel (擅长) at everything? Society seems to push us to be skilled in various areas. I remember trying new hobbies like piano or drawing, but always expecting to be good right away. When I wasn’t, the enjoyment disappeared gradually. I’ve come to realize that I have taken in all the expectations to always excel on a set of skills I learn. I’ve come to consider joy as achievement, not enjoyment. Writing was my first real hobby. I can surely see the rapid growth in my writing, but the expectation to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming a bore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby. We have to accept that it’s okay not to be good at something and that it is okay to just be bad at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. Hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything. Besides, being good at something is completely subjective, standards change as we live our lives, and to be quite frank, we are often our own strictest judge. 4. What is the root reason for the author’s stopping sharing stories? A. Self-doubt about ability. B. Dislikes of comments. C. Pressure from his cousin. D. Lack of creative inspiration. 5. Why does the author mention piano and drawing? A. To explain a rule. B. To prove a theory. C. To confirm a phenomenon. D. To draw a conclusion. 6. What does the author mean by “I have taken in all the expectations”? A. He has overly judged his work. B. He has absorbed social demands. C. He has valued others’ views much. D. He has performed better than expected. 7. What is the author’s final attitude towards a hobby? A. It is a set of skills. B. It is a waste of time. C. It is demanding and stressful. D. It is acceptable and enjoyable. C When young children’s behavior becomes challenging, many parents turn to threats. Many parents threatened to leave an activity or place, or not get snacks. “Discipline (管教) helps young children learn what behaviors are safe and proper and can play an important role in helping them learn the difference between right and wrong,” said Susan Woolford, M. D. “Empty threats, however, destroy trust and aren’t usually effective.” Most parents surveyed reported getting input about discipline strategies from several sources, turning to the child’s other parent, talking with friends or using parenting books, articles and social media. Meanwhile, less than a fifth of parents have discussed discipline with a healthcare provider and one in eight parents say they haven’t thought about their discipline strategies. Some parents surveyed admitted using discipline strategies that aren’t recommended by experts, with two in five sometimes spanking (打屁股). “Discipline strategies should be proper for the child’s age and developmental level.” Woolford said. For children aged one to two, distraction (分散注意力) and redirection are often most effective, noting that children this young are exploring their environment and willful misbehavior is quite few. But after age two, children understand their actions can cause a reaction from others and may increasingly test that out. Parents of children aged three to five surveyed were more likely to use warnings, speak firmly, and give timeouts. During these preschool ages, parents should let them know what their misbehavior will lead to. For instance, if a child throws a drink out of anger, a proper punishment would be to have them clean up the mess while an unrelated punishment will be less effective. Reactions should be immediate, so the child understands the connection with their misbehavior. As children grow, they respond differently to various discipline methods, so parents should adapt their strategies and stay open to new approaches. “Balancing correction with positive strengthening — like praise and rewards — helps children build self-respect while learning from their mistakes.” Woolford said. 8. What will threatening bring to kids according to Susan Woolford? A Less belief in parents. B. More improper behaviors. C. Unwillingness to accept gifts. D. Inability to tell right from wrong. 9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Effective threats to children. B. Situations of discipline strategies. C. Various methods of parenting. D. Reasons for children’s misbehavior. 10. What should parents do with the misbehavior of children aged 3 to 5? A. Reason with them patiently and seriously. B. Reflect on the causes of their mistakes. C. Forgive them for their childish actions. D. Punish them immediately and properly. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Praise and rewards ensure self-respect. B. Disciplining children is a flexible process. C. Parenting becomes easier as children grow. D. Correcting mistakes is a new parenting approach. D What’s good for your aging gut (肠道) may also be good for your aging brain. A study found that taking daily prebiotics (益生菌) can improve scores on memory tests in people over the age of 60. The findings are food for thought, especially as the same memory test is used to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The double-blinded trial included two prebiotics accessible over the counter in numerous nations around the world. To test the effect of these prebiotics on the aging brain, researchers enlisted 36 pairs of twins (双胞胎) over the age of 60. In each pair one twin was given a protein powder with prebiotics and the other was given a protein powder without prebiotics. The twin who unknowingly took the first one generally scored higher on a cognitive (认知的) test three months later. Evidence for the close relationship between the gut and the brain is growing year after year. Some experts refer to the gut as the body’s second brain. But the way these two nervous systems work together remains a secret. The recent twin study suggests that consuming certain “brain foods” may be a promising way to treat the fall of cognitive ability. “We are excited to see this. It holds huge promise for strengthening brain health and memory in our aging population,” said Mary Ni Lochlainn, a geriatric medicine researcher at King’s College London. “Unlocking the secrets of gut and brain could offer new approaches for living more healthily for longer.” While prebiotics might improve some aspects of cognitive function in an aging brain, like memory and processing times, there don’t appear to be significant physical benefits. For example, muscle loss doesn’t improve among aging twins taking prebiotics. The twins who participated in the current trial were mostly female, and even though the researchers considered sex differences in their findings, they accept that there may be some selection bias, for females are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. “Our next task is to see whether these effects can continue over longer periods and in larger groups of people.” said Mary. 12. What does paragraph 2 focus on? A. The purpose of the study. B. The process of the research. C. The function of the prebiotics. D. The identity of the participants. 13. Why is the gut considered as the body’s second brain? A. A healthy gut reflects a smart brain. B. The gut and the brain go hand in hand. C Their nervous systems run the same way. D. Brain foods benefit the cognition of the aged. 14. What can we know from paragraph 4? A. Memory strengthening is a must for the old. B. Muscle loss is unavoidable as we grow older. C. The secret between gut and brain has come out. D. The benefits of prebiotics on the aged are limited. 15. What does the underlined word “bias” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Principle. B. Freedom. C. Preference. D. Guidance. I have spent years of my life online. I have nearly crashed my car because I was texting a message. During a free and easy gathering, as I struggled to button my over-sized T-shirt, my friends made fun of me, their sharp remarks about my “jiggling belly” and “elephant-like posture” cutting through the air like knives, though they said it was harmless joking. My face burned hotter than the sun as their imitations (模仿) of my walk drew attention from strangers, turning what should have been a joyful reunion into an embarrassment (尴尬) that is still fresh in my memory. Looking at the figure in the mirror, I realized myself out of shape, no wonder they were making fun of me! “I have to lose weight and keep fit,” I promised to myself, “no matter what.” Act on it! The next morning, I equipped myself with sports clothes and went out into the park, starting running. Yet everything was quite different from what I had imagined. Half an hour seemed so long and the path seemed endless. In a short while, I was out of breath, sweat down my face, legs aching. I stopped to take a breath, full of doubts on my decision. I was at the point of giving up when my neighbor, Jean, came into view, who was walking her dog in the park. “Hi, Adam. Are you free recently?” “Yes, a bit.” I answered. “Would you mind walking Amy, my little Pomeranian, every morning for one week when I am out on business?” “Walking a dog is a good workout, much easier than running.” I thought to myself. “My pleasure” was my reply. However, the first morning of my walking duties was bitter cold. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The seven-day duty turned me into a morning workout person. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2025年5月期中检测试题 高一英语 注意事项: 1. 1. 6 What does the author mean by “I have taken in all the expectations”? A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段中的““Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work because — shocker — what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else’s?”(从那以后,我也越来越不愿意分享我的作品,因为 —— 令人震惊的是 —— 如果我的写作不如其他人好怎么办?)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“Society seems to push us to be skilled in various areas. I remember trying new hobbies like piano or drawing, but always expecting to be good right away. When I wasn’t, the enjoyment disappeared gradually. (社会似乎迫使我们在各个领域都熟练掌握技能。我记得尝试过钢琴或绘画等新爱好,但总是期望马上就能擅长。当我做不到时,乐趣逐渐消失了)”可知,作者提到钢琴和绘画是为了印证“社会压力导致人们对新爱好抱有立即擅长的期待,否则乐趣会减少”这一现象。故选C项。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中的 “Society seems to push us to be skilled in various areas. I remember trying new hobbies like piano or drawing, but always expecting to be good right away. When I wasn’t, the enjoyment disappeared gradually. 根据最后一段中的“We have to accept that it’s okay not to be good at something and that it is okay to just be bad at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. Hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything. (我们必须接受,不擅长某件事也没关系,即使不擅长某项活动,但因为它能带来快乐而继续做下去也没关系。爱好的存在是为了让你从必须擅长一切的压力中喘口气)” 可知,作者认为爱好应是可接受的、令人享受的。故选D项。 C When young children’s behavior becomes challenging, many parents turn to threats. A. Less belief in parents. A 9. B 10. D 11. 故选A。 根据第二段“Most parents surveyed reported getting input about discipline strategies from several sources, turning to the child’s other parent, talking with friends or using parenting books, articles and social media. Meanwhile, less than a fifth of parents have discussed discipline with a healthcare provider and one in eight parents say they haven’t thought about their discipline strategies. Some parents surveyed admitted using discipline strategies that aren’t recommended by experts, with two in five sometimes spanking 根据第四段中“For instance, if a child throws a drink out of anger, a proper punishment would be to have them clean up the mess while an unrelated punishment will be less effective. Reactions should be immediate, so the child understands the connection with their misbehavior.(例如,如果一个孩子因为生气而把饮料扔了,适当的惩罚是让他们清理混乱,而不相关的惩罚将不太有效。反应应该是即时的,这样孩子就能理解与他们的不当行为的联系)”可知,对于3-5岁孩子的错误行为,父母需立即且恰当地惩罚。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As children grow, they respond differently to various discipline methods, so parents should adapt their strategies and stay open to new approaches.(随着孩子的成长,他们对各种管教方法的反应不同,所以父母应该调整自己的策略,并对新的方法保持开放的态度)”可知,管教是一个需要灵活调整的过程。故选B。 D What’s good for your aging gut (肠道) may also be good for your aging brain. C. Their nervous systems run the same way. A. Principle. B. Freedom. C. Preference. D. Guidance. B 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段中的“The double-blinded trial included two prebiotics accessible over the counter in numerous nations around the world. To test the effect of these prebiotics on the aging brain, researchers enlisted 36 pairs of twins over the age of 60. In each pair one twin was given a protein powder with prebiotics and the other was given a protein powder without prebiotics. The twin who unknowingly took the first one generally scored higher on a cognitive test three months later. 根据第三段中的“Evidence for the close relationship between the gut and the brain is growing year after year. Some experts refer to the gut as the body’s second brain. (肠道与大脑之间密切关系的证据逐年增多。一些专家将肠道称为人体的“第二大脑”)”可知,肠道被称为“第二大脑”是因为其与大脑密切相关。故选B项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“While prebiotics might improve some aspects of cognitive function in an aging brain, like memory and processing times, there don’t appear to be significant physical benefits. For example, muscle loss doesn’t improve among aging twins taking prebiotics. (尽管益生菌可能改善衰老大脑的某些认知功能,如记忆力和处理速度,但似乎没有显著的身体益处。例如,服用益生菌的老年双胞胎的肌肉流失并未改善)”可推知,益生菌对老年人的益处仅限于认知功能部分方面,存在局限性。故选D项。 【15题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“The twins who participated in the current trial were mostly female, and even though the researchers considered sex differences in their findings, they accept that there may be some selection bias, for females are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. I have spent years of my life online. However, I struggled with speaking skills and felt extremely nervous. The thought of standing on stage made me want to give up. Just when I was about to lose hope, my English teacher, Ms. Smith, noticed my worry. Without saying much, she offered to help. Every afternoon after school, she practiced with me, correcting my pronunciation, improving my tone, and most importantly, encouraging me to believe in myself. Thanks to her support, I not only won the second prize in the contest but also gained confidence that still helps me today. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: However, the first morning of my walking duties was bitter cold. The wind bit my face like needles, and my body urged me to return to the warm bed. I pulled up my collar and stepped forward, shivering all the way. Amy, however, trotted joyfully ahead, tugging the leash with excitement. I had to quicken my pace to keep up with her, which gradually warmed my body. With each passing day, the chill seemed less harsh, and I found myself looking forward to the fresh air and rhythmic pace of our walk. What began as a favor turned into a challenge I didn’t want to give up. The seven-day duty turned me into a morning workout person. By the end of the week, I felt lighter, more energetic. My breathing improved, and my legs no longer ached after each walk. Encouraged by this change, I returned to running, but now with greater confidence and persistence. What started with walking a dog became the turning point in my journey toward fitness. I not only lost weight but also gained self-respect. Now, when I pass a mirror, I smile at the reflection — healthier, stronger, and full of life. 词汇激活 行为类: ①加快步伐:quicken one’s pace/hurry up/pick up speed ②坚持:persist in/stick to/keep up ③感染:infect/inspire/motivate 情绪类: ①快乐地:joyfully /with delight ②精力充沛:energetic/ full of energy/ vigorous 【点睛】【高分句型1】Amy, however, trotted joyfully ahead, tugging the leash with excitement.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) 【高分句型2】I had to quicken my pace to keep up with her, which gradually warmed my body.
