At 20, I was a lifeguard and swimming teacher at the council pool in Cambridge. I told the club coach about my dream of swimming the Channel (英吉利海峡). She looked me over and said, “Find another dream.”
Her words hurt me deeply. I wasn’t built for long-distance open-water swims. To swim distances, you need a degree of body fat density, buoyancy (浮力) and power. I had none of this. I realised the coach was probably right, and I let my dream fade away. But what I couldn’t have known was what would take its place, and how rewarding it would be.
One day, I was asked to teach adults who wanted to learn swimming but had a terrible fear of water. My first students were between 23 and 79 years old. Flora, the oldest, had never had time to swim; others still held on to the pain from childhood accidents or moments of shame.
It requires real courage to share those fears, and even more to undress and step into the pool. For this reason, there were no spectators. During those evening sessions, the pool was silent and still, and the building transformed into a peaceful temple.
By week three, they were waist- deep in the shallow end, holding floats as they walked for 10 meters to the other side. The last one to leave was Raj, who was much bigger than me and was terrified of the exercise most. By the seventh week, he was swimming, grasping the float, kicking the water hard with his legs. I loved these sessions. Watching them overcome a deep-rooted fear was deeply pleasing.
By summer, we moved to an outdoor pool surrounded by trees. The cold water shocked them, but soon they realised they were out of the indoor pool’s calm and safety. They were doing what they’d never imagined, and it was glorious. What it took my class to overcome something so challenging — the hard work and willpower — stayed with me for the rest of my life. None of them were ever going to swim the Channel, but of course, I never told them that. But it no longer mattered. I had discovered that helping someone cross their own private ocean of fear was a triumph far greater than any Channel swim.

C
In a groundbreaking new study, researchers discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoplastics (纳米塑料) are so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope.
Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair — so tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells.
One liter of water — equal to two standard- size bottled waters — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles (粒子) from seven types of plastics, of which 90% were identified as nanoplastics and the rest were microplastics, according to the new study.
Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/20000th of an inch (1 micrometer) . Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.
In the new study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from Columbia University presented a new technology that can see, count and analyze the chemical structure of nanoparticles in bottled water.
Instead of 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study found the actual number of plastic bits in three popular brands of water sold in the United States to be in between 110,000 and 370,000, not higher.
“The innovative techniques presented in the study open the door for further research to better understand the potential risks to human health.” said Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures — a nonprofit committed to reducing babies’ exposures to neurotoxic (毒害神经的) chemicals, who was not involved in the study.
“Infants and young children may face the greatest risks, as their developing brains and bodies are often more vulnerable to impacts from toxic exposures.” said Houlihan in an email.
Nanoplastics are the most worrisome type of plastic pollution for human health, experts say. That’s because the particles can invade individual cells and tissues in major organs, potentially interrupting cellular processes and depositing harmful chemicals such as bisphenols, phthalates, PFAS, and heavy metals.
There are things people can do to reduce their exposure to plastics, said Houlihan. “We can avoid consuming foods and drinks in plastic containers. We can wear clothing made from natural fabrics and buy consumer products made from natural materials,” Houlihan said. “We can simply assess the plastic in our daily lives and find alternatives whenever possible.”
46. Where can nanoplastics be found in our body?
A. The blood. B. The lung.
C. The stomach. D. Almost everywhere.
47. What are the differences between nanoplastics and microplastics?
A. Nanoplastics are harmful, while microplastics aren’t.
B. Nanoplastics exist in bottled water, while microplastics don’t.
C. Nanoplastics can migrate through certain tissues, while microplastics can’t.
D. Nanoplastics are relatively bigger, while microplastics are much smaller.
48. Why is Jane Houlihan’s statement mentioned in paragraph 7?
A. To add more background information for the new study.
B. To provide evidence for the discussion of plastic hazard.
C. To provide an objective evaluation of the new study.
D. To encourage readers to focus on the new study.
49. What is the meaning of the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 8?
A. Fragile. B. Optimistic.
C. Emotional. D. Ignorant.
50. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Nanoplastics: A Newly Discovered Plastic Type
B. Bottled Water: High Levels of Nanoplastics and Their Health Risks

I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it. But this fixation (固恋) on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality.”
Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”
A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual. Philosophers Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning (演绎推理). Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.
“When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics.
To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human matures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. “Synchronicity (同步性) is key to happiness,” he said. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.
51. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ________.
A. are controlled by time B. are keen on reading books
C. are eager to achieve more D. are changing their characters
52. According to Brooks’ warning, what is the ultimate consequence of emphasizing professional success?
A. A society driven by emotional intelligence.
B. A stronger focus on academic excellence.
C. A loss of moral and spiritual depth in individuals.
D. An increase in collaborative problem-solving skills.
53. Paragraph 4 is mainly developed by ________.
A. making comparisons B. following the time order
C. giving examples D. analyzing causes
54. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. love is more important than focus B. the focus on human natures counts
C. more work contributes to happiness D. success comes from devotion to work.
55. The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. raise awareness to character building B. stress the importance of productivity
C. warn about the pressure to seek success D. criticize students’ desire for achievements
【答案】51. C 52. C 53. A 54. D 55. A

【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality(在职业上取得成功的压力,获得技能的压力,在信息时代经济中取得成功所需要做的事情的压力,真的变成了压倒性的压力,它在某种程度上掩盖了对品格和道德的思考)”可知,强调职业成功的最终后果是个人在道德和精神层面的深度缺失。故选C项。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的内容“A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. 阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
I was in a shopping mall recently, so I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an older gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch stretched out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather evident that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life.
There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. Then the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the older gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the girl except her tip. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Subsequently, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the older man in need of some attention. I only wish I had a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was pondering this event later on, I wondered to myself why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I suspect that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this older man as well. Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we encounter someone like this older gentleman, in need of kindness and attention. Perhaps he’s just simply lazy and didn’t work hard enough in his life. Or he should have gone to school and made more of himself. But just maybe he needs a little helping hand. Thank God for this young man who inspired the others to goodness as well. Oh, by the way, the last words this young man told the server was, “There go I, but by the Grace of God.”
66. What did the writer notice about the older gentleman when going to the coffee shop?(no more than 20 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
67. What does the underlined word “perplexed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?(1 word)

______________________________________________________________________________
70. Will you help others who are in need of help? And why?(no more than 20 words)

【答案】例文
Dear Chris,
I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in the robot performance at this year’s Spring Festival Gala. During the show, several intelligent robots performed Chinese martial arts with impressive accuracy and coordination. The performance quickly attracted worldwide attention, and many overseas viewers were amazed at the rapid development of China’s technology.
In my opinion, robots will play an increasingly important role in the future. First, they can assist doctors in performing precise surgeries and taking care of elderly patients. Second, robots may be widely used in education and industry, helping teachers with personalized learning and replacing humans in dangerous working environments.
Personally, I hold a positive attitude toward the development of robotics. As long as we use technology wisely and responsibly, robots can greatly improve our quality of life.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Best wishes,
Li Jin

41. Why did the author give up his dream of swimming the Channel?
A. He failed to get professional guidance. B. He got injured in an open-water swim.
C. He found a more rewarding alternative. D. He lacked the required physical qualities.
42. What did the author’s adult students have in common?
A. They had a deep fear of water. B. They hated any form of exercise.
C. They wanted to improve their health. D. They had never tried swimming before.
43. Which of the following best describes the students’ process of learning to swim?
A. Smooth and efficient. B. Gradual and determined.
C. Effortless and productive. D. Competitive and goal-driven.
44. What was the author’s primary gain from his teaching experience?
A. A sense of pleasure and achievement. B. Courage to pursue his own dream.
C. Deep friendship with his students. D. Better swimming teaching skills.
45. What message does the story convey?
A. Physical limits define one’s potential. B. Helping others brings unexpected fulfillment.
C. Professional advice should never be questioned. D. Childhood experiences determine future success.

C. How to Reduce Exposure to Plastics in Daily Life
D. The Difference Between Nanoplastics and Microplastics
