When I was a kid, a tree grew in front of my home. At the age of 10, I was just tall enough to reach its lowest branch and lift myself into its embrace. I wasn’t the only climber.
Sometimes two or three of my friends would join me in the sycamore (无花果树), or in the maple down the street. Climbing trees allowed us to enter another world. In fact, it was a world with in a world: We took our imaginations with us into those heights, which by turns were a fortress, a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a mountain castle.
In my small Maine town there are some lovely maples, lindens, and oaks. Their branches spread wide, and they are strong enough for people to climb. But I have not yet seen a climber. Perhaps computer games have replaced tree climbing, or maybe the activity went the way of monkey bars (攀爬架), which came to be viewed as too risky and have largely disappeared from playgrounds.
It is a sad loss. I have always believed that, since low-hanging branches provide no benefit to the tree, they must be meant for the child. Robert Frost understood this when he wrote: When I see birches bend to left and right, I like to think some boy’s been swinging (摇摆,摆动) them. My only disagreement with Frost is his idea that tree climbing is an undertaking only for boys. Both boys and girls have what it takes to make a joyful ascent.
The campus of the university where I teach is lovingly landscaped with all sorts of trees. During a recent walk, I grabbed a branch and a moment later I was sitting on it. Then the memories came flooding back: The old friends, the long view of my neighborhood, and finally, the reluctance to return to earth when the parental call to supper came.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t hear the student calling to me from below. He asked what I was doing. I didn’t waste time on explanations. “Come on up,” I said. “The air’s fine.” But he only laughed, and waved me off. He didn’t know what he was missing.

Some people can sit outside all summer long and not suffer from mosquito bites, while others turn into an itchy (痒的) mess. It’s mostly about the invisible chemical landscape of the air around us. Mosquitoes take advantage of this landscape by using specialized behaviors and sensory organs to find victims by following the tiny chemical marks their bodies leave behind; specifically, mosquitoes rely on carbon dioxide to find their hosts.
When we breathe, the carbon dioxide from our lungs doesn’t immediately mix with the air, but temporarily stays in plumes (团状气流) that mosquitoes follow. “Mosquitoes start locating the plumes of carbon dioxide and keep flying upwind as they sense higher concentrations than the normal atmosphere.” said Joop van Loon, a scientist who studies insects. Using carbon dioxide, mosquitoes can lock onto targets from up to 50 meters away.
Things start getting personal when mosquitoes get about 1 meter away from a group of potential targets. At a short distance, mosquitoes take into account a lot of factors that vary from person to person, including skin temperature, the presence of water vapor (水 蒸 气 ) and color. Scientists think the most important factor mosquitoes rely on when choosing one person over another is the chemical compounds (化合物) produced by the colonies of microbes (微生物菌落) that live on our skin.
These chemical smells are complex, including upward of 300 different compounds, and they vary from person to person based on genetics and environments. “If you compare a father and daughter in the same household, there can be differences.” said Jeff Riffell, an associate professor of biology who has studied mosquito attraction. For instance, men with a greater diversity of skin microbes tended to get fewer mosquito bites than men with less diverse skin microbes did, a study found.
Tiny differences in the elements of these chemical smells can account for big differences in how many bites a person gets. The elements of those microbial colonies can also vary over time in the same individual, particularly if that person is sick, Riffell said. We don’t have much control over the microbiomes on our skin, but Riffell did offer some advice based on his research— mosquitoes love the color black, so consider wearing something lighter at your next cookout.
46. What do we know about mosquitoes before they bite?
A. They are affected by wind speed.
B. They tend to fly against the wind.
C. They locate their victims through their body sizes.
D. They target their victims by using carbon dioxide.
47. What is the key factor that mosquitoes rely on to choose who to bite?
A. Victims’ skin body temperature.
B. The water vapor they sensed in the air.
C. The chemicals left on skin by microbes.
D. The color of victims’ clothes.
48. Who is more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes?
A. Men in general.
B. Men with a greater variety of skin microbes.
C. Women in general.
D. Men with a smaller variety of skin microbes.
49. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Mosquitoes do not bite people who are sick.
B. Light-colored clothing is less likely to attract mosquitoes.
C. Mosquitoes do not bite people who are much older.
D. We should cover our bodies to avoid mosquitoes outdoors.
50. Which question does the passage mainly answer?
A. Why do some people attract mosquitoes?
B. Why are there mosquitoes in the world?
C. How to avoid mosquito bites?
D. What kind of smell attracts mosquitoes the most?
D
Bookstores in Singapore are on the decline, with major chains like Kinokuniya shutting down shops since 2019. The trend is driven by a growing shift towards digital formats like e-books. In 2023, 36.3 million physical and digital books were lent from libraries, according to the National Library Board.
If everyone relies entirely on borrowing, the book industry suffers. What many fail to appreciate is that the book industry operates as an interconnected ecosystem. Few see the labour-intensive (劳动密集型的) process: Authors pour countless hours into creating stories, followed by even more work to polish them. Bringing life to words then requires others like editors, designers and illustrators. After publication, the work continues with marketing, distribution and sales to ensure the book reaches the readers. Purchasing a book directly supports the many people involved in the bookmaking process.
Without sufficient sales, authors would not be able to continue writing as it becomes an unsustainable career. Publishers have their way of responding to the situation: They choose to play it safe, focusing only on projects they know will sell well, instead of taking chances on more diverse or creative works. This is harmful in the long term.
Physical bookstores offer much more than access to books. They host book launches and author meet-and-greets, transforming into lively spaces filled with ideas and meaningful conversations. In a world dominated by digital content, bookstores remain magical places. They are not just shops; they are dynamic meeting points where stories, people, and communities connect and interact.
There are calls for ideas such as rental subsidies (补贴) and tax breaks to help Singapore bookstores sustain themselves. From a consumer viewpoint, while it may not be practical to purchase every book we wish to read, we can continue borrowing from libraries while occasionally buying books.
Ultimately, both libraries and bookstores are essential to preserving Singapore’s reading culture: Libraries inspire a love for reading, while bookstores sustain the literary ecosystem by supporting authors, publishers, and the production of new works. To allow bookstores to disappear would be to lose an essential backbone of Singapore’s cultural heritage (遗产).
51. What mainly causes the fall of Kinokuniya in Singapore?
A. The reduced reading rate in Singaporeans.
B. The shift of consumers’ reading channels.
C. People’s increasing demand for quality books.
D. People’s interest in other forms of entertainment.
52. What does the author intend to explain in paragraph 2?
A. Why book sales matter in the book industry.
B. Why book publishing requires so much effort.
C. How bookmaking is connected with book sales.
D. How authors cooperate with other professionals.
53. What might the publishers’ risk-avoiding reactions lead to?
A. A decline in creative diversity. B. Increased investment in new authors.
C. Enhanced quality of published works. D. A rise in the publication of literary works.
54. What is the additional role of physical bookstores beyond selling books?
A. Promoting in-person social exchanges. B. Serving as a place for individual reading.
C. Hosting virtual events for global audiences. D. Encouraging electronic media consumption.
55. What does the author think about physical bookshops in Singapore?
A. They are more important than public libraries.
B. They should be replaced by online bookstores.
C. They should be responsible for the reduced sales.
D. They are vital to both literary and cultural survival.

When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn exceptional marks; he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well.
At the age of eight his parents divorced, and Marco and his young sister Sandra moved in with their dad. It felt to Marco that his father had little time for him and Sandra. Marco sank further into his low self-esteem and was overwhelmed with feeling desperately unappreciated, alone and isolated.
One day his father, already tired after a long day, tripped over Marco’s bike in the garage. The fierce fight that followed left Marco feeling humiliated (羞辱). It seemed no matter how hard he tried he could never do anything right.
Two days later, his aunt Ginette called him. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalite sponsored by Club Optimiste. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him do humorous performances for the family at Christmas. Feeling her strong belief, Marco agreed to enter the contest.
All that winter of 1980 to 1981, he practiced in Ville d’Anjou, where the competition would take place. The hours and the obstacles no longer counted. The criticism from his father didn’t matter. Four. months later, the big night arrived. His mother, his sister, his grandmother, and his aunt Ginette, were all in the audience. Butterflies filled his stomach. But when he stepped onto the stage and began to speak, he felt totally at home. To his shock and amazement, he WON!
As I travel around the world to speak to thousands of people every year, I tell them Marco’s story. I tell them his story because it is my story.
It all happened because of a single phone call, from one single person who simply believed in me. Because of her, I have been able to more than fulfill my dreams. I’ve been able to inspire and to touch the lives of so many others—and help them fulfill theirs.

67. What caused Marco to hold negative attitude towards himself? (no more than 10 words)

41. What did the author and his friends benefit from climbing trees?
A. They were inspired to become astronauts.
B. They escaped the heavy burden of learning.
C. They became more flexible like monkeys.
D. They had greatly expanded their imagination.
42. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A. Explain the reasons for kids’ not climbing trees.
B. Describe the poor economy situation in Maine.
C. Expect monkey bars to be removed from playgrounds.
D. Analyze the good of computer games.
43. What does Robert’s poem prove?
A. Only boys like to swing the branches of birches.
B. The low-hanging branches are for children to play with.
C. The low-hanging branches are trees’ important parts.
D. Climbing trees can be replaced by computer games.
44. What does the underlined word in the 4th paragraph probably mean?
A. Climbing B. Playing C. Returning D. Jumping
45. What did the author think his student missed in the last paragraph?
A. The good memories of childhood.
B. The chance to breathe fresh air.
C. The fun of climbing trees.
D. The safety sense on earth.
41. D 42. A 43. B 44. A 45. C

He didn’t know what he was missing.(我沉浸在思绪中,没有听到下面那个学生在叫我。

根据第二段中的““Mosquitoes start locating the plumes of carbon dioxide and keep flying upwind as they sense higher concentrations than the normal atmosphere.” said Joop van Loon, a scientist who studies insects. Using carbon dioxide, mosquitoes can lock onto targets from up to 50 meters away.(“蚊子开始定位二氧化碳羽流,当它们感觉到二氧化碳浓度高于正常大气时,它们就会继续逆风飞行。”研究昆虫的科学家Joop van Loon说。利用二氧化碳,蚊子可以锁定50米外的目标)”可知,蚊子在叮咬之前先使用二氧化碳锁定目标。故选D项。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Scientists think the most important factor mosquitoes rely on when choosing one person over another is the chemical compounds (化合物) produced by the colonies of microbes (微生物菌落) that live on our skin. (科学家认为,蚊子在选择一个人而不是另一个人时最重要的依赖因素是生活在我们皮肤上的微生物菌落产生的化合物)”可知,蚊子叮咬谁的决定性因素是这个人皮肤上的微生物群体产生的化学化合物。故选C项。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“For instance, men with a greater diversity of skin microbes tended to get fewer mosquito bites than men with less diverse skin microbes did, a study found. (例如,一项研究发现,皮肤微生物多样性较高的男性比皮肤微生物多样性较低的男性更不容易被蚊子叮咬)”可知,皮肤微生物多样性较低的男性更容易被蚊虫叮咬。故选D项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的“We don’t have much control over the microbiomes on our skin, but Riffell did offer some advice based on his research — mosquitoes love the color black, so consider wearing something lighter at your next cookout. (我们无法控制皮肤上的微生物群,但Riffell确实根据他的研究提供了一些建议——蚊子喜欢黑色,所以下次野餐时考虑穿浅色的衣服)”可推知,在户外穿浅色衣服吸引蚊子的可能性较小。故选B项。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是首段“Some people can sit outside all summer long and not suffer from mosquito bites, while others turn into an itchy (痒的) mess. 故选A项。

51. B 52. A 53. A 54. A 55. D

After publication, the work continues with marketing, distribution and sales to ensure the book reaches the readers. Purchasing a book directly supports the many people involved in the bookmaking process. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“They choose to play it safe, focusing only on projects they know will sell well, instead of taking chances on more diverse or creative works. This is harmful in the long term. (他们选择谨慎行事,只专注于他们知道会大卖的项目,而不是冒险尝试更多样化或更有创意的作品。从长远来看,这是有害的。)”可推知,出版商规避风险的反应可能导致图书创意多样性的减少。故选A项。

根据最后一段中“Libraries inspire a love for reading, while bookstores sustain the literary ecosystem by supporting authors, publishers, and the production of new works. To allow bookstores to disappear would be to lose an essential backbone of Singapore’s cultural heritage (遗产). (图书馆激发了人们对阅读的热爱,而书店则通过支持作者、出版商和新作品的生产来维持文学生态系统。允许书店消失将会失去新加坡文化遗产的重要支柱。)”可推知,作者认为实体书店对文学和文化的存续都至关重要。故选D项。
