Passage 1
(24-25高一下·福州福九联盟·期末)
It started simply, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body shook with excitement because I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought I could, but I had succeeded.
Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while bouldering (攀岩). I’m not sure what exactly happened, but I think my foot slipped on the way down. I didn’t land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick sadly, “A piece of me would fade away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn’t let that happen.”
It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then I got scared. I felt like I had disappointed myself and Nick. He comforted me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.

Passage 1
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期末)
Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls
who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. Tilly started running just two years ago and has already shot straight to the top. When some of her friends informed her of the international record, she decided to give it a try while competing at the SA State Championships. She also has dreams of competing in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. “In the long-term, maybe, but in the short-term, it’s just achieving a goal and then getting to the next one and then achieving that: it’s a long way down,” she said.
“You never think that anyone’s going to get a world record at this age, at any age really, it’s just surreal,” Mr Williams, Tilly’s dad said. “We’re very proud. It’s very important to recognise these achievements, but also to stay very much grounded and just enjoy the other pursuits that she likes. Passage 1
(24-25高一下·福建宁德·期末)
Although my seven-day experience as a volunteer teacher in Guilin, Guangxi, has come to an end, I can still see those noisy but cute kids sometimes in my dreams.
When my classmates and I first arrived in Guilin, we rode in a crowded minibus along winding (蜿蜒的) roads to a house in Yuanbaoshan Forest Park. Several local teachers came to greet us. After having a simple supper, we began preparing the lessons for the students we were about to welcome.
On the first day, we took an early boat to a primary school in a small county. The school was quite small, having only one building. Most of the students were the children of people working far from home.
Our group was teaching 3rd and 4th graders, and they were very curious about everything. After simple greetings, we all got along very well. The following days were filled with lessons, including Chinese, maths and sports. Each of the students was very active in answering questions. Physical education, which I taught, was their favorite class. One particular lesson that stood out was when I taught them how to play basketball. After I explained the basic rules and skills, they all took active part in, determined to improve their skills.
The more I taught, the more I realized that I was not just teaching subject material but also helping to shape how my students see the world. In this peaceful place, I learned that being a teacher is about more than just giving lessons: It’s about teaching values, helping kids grow and encouraging them to be their best. It’s a big responsibility, but one that I’m grateful for and will always remember.

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·福建龙岩·期末)
It all started on a stoop (门廊). I picked up a book and started reading to the neighborhood kids. When I finished reading, the kids didn’t want story time to stop. So I said, “You guys can read a book at home.” “We don’t have any books at home.” they responded. It was an unpleasant reminder that there are children who don’t have a single book at home.
As a public librarian, I quickly realized that the kids that I saw coming into the library weren’t the same ones I was reading to out on my front stoop. I learned about something called book deserts. A book desert is an area or a community with limited access to books and reading materials.
I was aware that I wasn’t going to meet my neighbors who need it most inside library’s walls. So I quit my job and took to the streets, becoming a street librarian who is doing work to increase literary access outside of traditional settings.
Book deserts are often found in economically disadvantaged areas, where bookstores and libraries are not enough. Lower-income neighbors may lack the resources to buy books from the bookstore or pay library fines. Residents may be working multiple jobs or facing hardships that make a trip to the library an additional stress. Requirement of identification, fines and fees, all while seemingly normal, can become difficult for families facing hardships.
Therefore, I’m making books appear in everyday places in extraordinary ways. I fix free public book vending machines (自助售书机), host street-corner story times, and pop up on the block with free bookstores, so
kids who don’t have McDonald’s money don’t have to worry about having book-fair money. You’ll find me delivering books to your front stoop. I have delivered 5,000 books to children living in book deserts.
I believe everyone is a reader. They just haven’t found the right book yet. And that’s where librarians step in. We must meet them where they are and guide them along that journey.
1.What inspired the author to become a street librarian?
A.The kids’ lack of books at home.
B.The kids’ request for more stories.
C.Her love for reading books on stoops.
D.Her curiosity for seeking book deserts.

A.The causes of book deserts.
B.The struggles of a street librarian.
C.The challenges of working more jobs.
D.The importance of traditional libraries.
3.How does the author help kids in book deserts?
A.By lowering book prices. B.By donating money to them.
C.By inviting them to schools. D.By providing free books.
4. What can we conclude from the text?
A.Street libraries will replace public ones.
B.Librarians should reach out to readers.
C.Libraries should maintain traditional rules.
D.Book deserts exist even in rich areas.
Passage 2
(23-24高一下·福建南平·期末)
When I started skating at 6 years old, I liked Dorothy Hamill so much that I had a Dorothy doll and would put it on the edge of the rink(溜冰场) to watch me skate on the ice. There was something meaningful to me about
having the doll next to me as I would jump, fall and pick myself back up again. It was there inspiring me to never give up.
Fourteen years later, I followed Dorothy’s path to become the first American woman figure skater (花样滑冰运动员) to win Olympic gold since she did it in 1976. And now, three decades later, Barbie (芭比娃娃) is honoring me with my own doll as the newest addition to its InspiringWomen Series.
Six-year-old me never would have imagined I’d be where I am today. But I made it because Iwas able to discover my dreams as a young girl. My Dorothy doll had the power — it was not just a piece of decoration on the ice rink; it inspired me to dream big and work hard.
When I achieved my dream, I felt like giving children chances to find their dreams and pursue them. Through working with children and raising my own girls, I quickly realized a child’s success in life starts with a school education and an interest in reading. A book is more than just a book, just like what the Dorothy doll meant to me. That’s where dreams are born. When children open up a book, they open up their world.
So in 1996, I established Always Dream, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve children’s reading by providing access to books and encouraging families to read together. If I can do more for other young girls, not only with my Barbie Inspiring Women doll, but also with whatI’m doing now, that just might be the biggest gold medal of all.

Passage 1
(22-23高一下·福建南平·期末)
It was the scene from every parent’s worst nightmare when 8-year-old Rihaan was left lying in the middle of the road, with his bike bent beside him as the car that hit him stopped suddenly.
On hearing the loud bang, my husband, Ashish, ran down the driveway, picked his limp son up into his arms and carried him inside. Seeing Rihaan was bleeding badly from his head, legs and arms, my husband and I were both terrified he’d been so seriously injured.
I called triple zero. But I was overcome with shock and struggling to speak. It was young Aarush, Rihaan’s brother, who took over the call, communicating key information to emergency services. Then, he quickly took clean towels to press on Rihaan’s wounds and stop the blood. When he noticed his brother’s eyes wide with fear and tears falling down his cheeks, he also tried to comfort him.
After a short time, an ambulance and the police arrived, and the professionals could take over from Aarush. Rihaan was rushed to hospital where scans showed he was concussed (脑震荡) but luckily had broken no bones.
“He’d been thrown 7 metres in the air.” Ashish recalled. “And wearing no helmet (头盔), he was very lucky the driver was not speeding. We don’t blame the driver, for it could have been anyone,” Ashish said.
With Rihaan recovering well, it meant the focus turned quickly to his brave brother. After the accident the operator who took Ashish’s call, Nick Smith, nominated (提名) him for a Junior Triple Zero Hero award. As for Rihaan — who is back on the bike and always wears a helmet now — he agrees his brother was a hero. “But I’d quite like a medal too,” Rihaan, said cheerfully, “I suffered all the pain and then he got the award!”

We were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn’t manage, he asked me for help at the last moment. So now we had an hour to get to the airport. Luckily, there were not many cars or buses on the road and we were able to get there just in time.

In the end, there was another announcement telling us that passengers waiting for Flight L108 could get a free meal voucher (凭单) and that the plane hadn’t left Spain for technical problems. We thought that meant that it wasn’t safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late evening when we were asked to report again. This time we were given vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.

Passage 1
(23-24高一下·福建泉州·期末)
When it comes to sustainability (可持续性), Lauren Singer is the real deal. Known for her “Trash is For Tossers” blog and Package Free lifestyle shop, Singer is leading by example with a single mason jar (广口瓶) containing the only trash (垃圾) she’s collected in eight years (yes, you read that correctly). With recent money support from some companies, Singer is focused on becoming the largest producer of sustainable products in the world.
It all started when Singer was studying at New York University. As an Environmental Science student, she was getting mad at a classmate for making much plastic trash, but later she found every single thing in her own fridge was in one way or another packaged in plastic. It turned out she was as bad. So, she decided to move from plastics and thought the only way was to learn how to make her own products. Then, while she was doing research online, she came across a blog called the “Zero Waste Home” started by a Californian family who live a completely
zero-waste life.
Her mind was completely blown. Originally, she thought she was doing the best for the planet by not using plastic. But the idea of producing no trash was so inspiring that she began her zero-waste journey and explored the possibility of living a waste-free life. She started by stopping buying packaged food and making her own products. Besides, instead of buying new clothing, she would buy things that were totally recycled, second-hand. She was also downsized — had only the things that she really needed.
In 2014, Lauren Singer founded her blog, “Trash is for Tossers”, to document her waste-free journey, as well as provide easy, actionable tips and tricks to living sustainably. She is becoming increasingly popular and has even been invited to lecture at the United Nations to promote her zero-waste lifestyle: “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” By taking simple action, everyone can contribute to the environment.

Passage 2
(24-25高一下·福建漳州·期末)
In Kenya’s countryside, many women had to struggle with dried-up streams, food shortages, and long journeys to collect firewood for fuel and fencing — problems mainly caused by deforestation (森林砍伐). To solve these issues, Professor Wangari Maathai started the Green Belt Movement (GBM) in 1977 to encourage women to work together to plant trees, which would help hold soil, store rainwater, and provide food and firewood. By doing so, they could also earn small payments for their work.
The movement started with just seven trees planted on World Environment Day in 1977. Yet within months, it grew into a national effort with thousands of trees planted in rows to form “green belts”. As the trees took root, Professor Maathai saw something deeper. The women’s struggles went beyond drought to their lack of voice in community decisions. In response, the Green Belt Movement launched the Community Empowerment (赋权) and Education conferences to teach people how to stand up for their rights while protecting the land, empowering women to lead and challenge the traditional roles.
Looking back, the journey has by no means been easy. Time and again, the group stood against powerful interests — from stopping a 60-story building in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park (1989) to saving Karura Forest from privatization (1999). These victories came at great risk. Professor Maathai and members always faced violent attacks and even death threats during protests. Yet, GBM never stopped. To date, hundreds of thousands of women have become involved, and over 5,000 tree farms have been established. More than 51 million trees have been planted — on farms, in schools and churches, along rivers, and throughout the nation, contributing significantly to environmental protection and sustainable (可持续的)development.
In 2004, Professor Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy (民主) and peace. Today, the work of Professor Maathai and the Green Belt Movement continues to stand as living proof that small actions make big changes.
1.Why did Professor Maathai originally start the Green Belt Movement?
A.To ensure food safety. B.To create job opportunities.
C.To unite women for land rights. D.To help women overcome environmental hardships.
2.What did Professor Maathai realize after the movement started?
A.Lack of community fund. B.Strong disagreements from powerful interests.
C.Women’s absence from community decisions. D.Difficulty in growing trees in drought-hit areas.
3.Which of the following best describes the Green Belt Movement?
A.Tough but successful. B.Traditional but significant.
C.Unrecognized but sustainable. D.Limited but well-known.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

In the distant Dulongjiang Township of Yunnan Province, there lived a remarkable woman named Li Yuhua. As an eco - forest guardian and a cultural inheritor (继承人) of the Derung people, she contributed to protecting the green mountains and helping villagers achieve a better life.
Once, Dulongjiang was distant, reachable only through winding mountain roads. The villagers lived a simple life with poor transportation and limited resources. Li Yuhua, however, saw the potential in this land. She encouraged villagers to plant black cardamom,a crop suitable for the mountainous environment. The plant can be made into a spice (香料) that is used in many cuisine dishes and offers some health benefits. At first, villagers were hesitant. But with the support of the local government, Li Yuhua invited agricultural experts to teach the villagers and increased the planting of this crop. By the end of 2021, over 46 square kilometers of land was used to grow black cardamom, creating a value of over 20 million yuan. The villagers’ annual income rose greatly, bringing hope to the entire community.
To further improve their lives, Li Yuhua used the power of the internet. Passage 1
(24-25高一下·福建厦门·期末)
Sana Javeri Kadri’s groundbreaking efforts to change the global spice industry started with one small action. She took aim at golden milk lattes. In 2016, Javeri Kadri was working in marketing for a large San Francisco grocery store when she noticed the fashion sweeping America’s coffee shops. She knew the drink’s key ingredient, powdered turmeric (姜黄粉), grew mostly in her native India. But unlike existing varieties of farm-to-table coffee, chocolate, or fruit, there was little transparency (透明度) into the supply chain.
When she returned to Mumbai early the following year, Javeri Kadri investigated and realized two things. Some regenerative farmers in India used distinct growing and processing techniques that resulted in varieties far better than anything she’d seen across Mumbai and California. And yet no farmers seemed to be profiting from turmeric’s newfound fashion among wellness seekers. So she decided to reinvent the supply chain.
Javeri Kadri put in the only money she had — about $3,000 — to buy the freshest turmeric she could find and bring it to California. “I was hand-packing it in my basement and then selling it on the internet,” she remembers. Thanks to a talent for Instagram marketing and a few key contacts in the food world, the business took off.
Today Javeri Kadri’s Diaspora Co. offers 41 spices sourced from India and Sri Lanka. Unlike traditional spice companies, Diaspora deals directly with more than 150 farms, reaching thousands of farm-workers while paying them, on average, four times the market price. The high-quality product allows the company to charge an extra fee, which has led to more funds in its farm partners. “Because we’re sourcing from South Asia, I think there’s a very problematic assumption that it should be cheap,” she says. “That’s basically the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and racism, where we’re devaluing this labor and we’re devaluing the worth of this product.”
1.What do we know about turmeric in paragraph 1?
A.It is native to San Francisco. B.It is sold in grocery store.
C.It is a farm-to-table product. D.It is key to golden milk lattes.
2.What led Javeri Kadri to reinvent the supply chain?
A.The outdated farming skills. B.The weak sales of turmeric.
C.Her eagerness to seek wellness. D.Farmers’ missing out on profits.
3.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How Javeri Kadri grew fresh turmeric. B.How Javeri Kadri’s business succeeded.
C.How Javeri Kadri used online marketing. D.How Javeri Kadri’s influence was expanded.
4.Why does Javeri Kadri mention “colonialism and racism” in paragraph 4?
A.To review the history of spice industry. B.To explain the pricing principle of spice.
C.To introduce the origin of spice varieties. D.To indicate the unfairness of spice trade.

(24-25高一下·福建三明·期末)
In 1984, Carter became a member of Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization focusing on building affordable homes.
Founded in 1976, Habitat had built 342 homes by 1980. After the Carters joined, that number climbed rapidly, reaching 10,000 by 1991. By 2023, the organization had built or repaired more than 45,000 homes. Now, it has branches in all 50 U. S. states and works in more than 70 countries.
Carter’s connection with Habitat began with a visit to one of its work sites in New York City, where volunteers were repairing an old building. Struck by the challenging task, he joked that he would have to return to lend his carpentry (木工的) skills. Soon after, Carter organized a group of volunteers and returned to the site. He and his wife, Rosalynn, worked alongside other volunteers during the day and shared dormitories with them at night.

He expected volunteers to arrive on time to ensure focus on the task at hand. Typically on the Tuesday night of the workweek, Carter would visit each home construction site to see if the projects were on schedule. If they weren’t,
he would call on additional volunteers to keep progress on track.

Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It not only made me stronger physically and mentally but also gave me new confidence. Besides, it was a great chance for Nick and me to grow closer, while encouraging me to try new things and push my limits.

Passage 1
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期末)
Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
Since then, she has run two to three times a week with her and, Mark Williams, or at the Adelaide Harriers Athletics Club.
Tilly has been inspired by runners Caitlin Adams, Tara Palm, and her favourite book character, Matilda by Roald Dahl. “I could really relate to the main character Matilda because she set herself goals and really had to work hard to achieve them.” she said.
Tilly is set to represent South Australia in Tasmania on Friday at the National 10-12 years Track&Field Championships competition at Launceston.
She loves her running, but she does so many other things as well and I think it’s really important that the focus is on life rather than just one thing.”

The school was quite small,
having only one building.

Book deserts are often found in economically disadvantaged areas, where bookstores and libraries are not
enough.
I fix free public book vending machines (自助售书机), host street-corner story times, and pop up on the block with free bookstores, so kids who don’t have McDonald’s money don’t have to worry about having book-fair money.
2.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The causes of book deserts.
B.The struggles of a street librarian.
C.The challenges of working more jobs.
D.The importance of traditional libraries.
3.How does the author help kids in book deserts?
A.By lowering book prices. B.By donating money to them.
C.By inviting them to schools. D.By providing free books.
4. What can we conclude from the text?
A.Street libraries will replace public ones.
B.Librarians should reach out to readers.
C.Libraries should maintain traditional rules.
D.Book deserts exist even in rich areas.

Requirement of identification, fines and fees, all while seemingly normal, can become difficult for families facing hardships. 故选A。

他们相遇,并引导他们完成这段旅程)”可知,作者认为图书馆员应该主动接触读者,引导他们找到合适的书籍,因此可以得出结论,图书馆员应该主动接触读者。故选B。
Passage 2
(23-24高一下·福建南平·期末)
When I started skating at 6 years old, I liked Dorothy Hamill so much that I had a Dorothy doll and would put it on the edge of the rink(溜冰场) to watch me skate on the ice. There was something meaningful to me about having the doll next to me as I would jump, fall and pick myself back up again.
1.What effect did the Dorothy doll have on the author?
A.It earned her respect. B.It inspired her to move on.

1.What happened to Rihaan?
A.He was hit by a car. B.He broke his arms.
C.He was trapped in a car. D.He fell off his bike.
2.Why did Aarush take over the call?
A.Mom was helping his father. B.Mom was too nervous to speak.
C.Mom wasn’t sure what to say. D.Mom was taking care of Rihaan.
3.What did Ashish mean in Paragraph 5?
A.The driver broke the speed limit. B.Traffic rules should be improved.
C.The family would charge the driver. D.Rihaan should have worn a helmet.
4.Which of the following best describes Aarush?
A.Active and talented. B.Calm and caring.
C.Kind and humorous. D.Honest and brave.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.B

4.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I called triple zero. But I was overcome with shock and struggling to speak. In 1931, Francis Chichester tried to fly round the world but failed. Then he gave up flying and began sailing. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo(单人的)transatlantic sailing race.
After that, his old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan, In August, 1966, at the age of nearly sixty-five, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in his new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.
After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to discourage him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part. On 30 January, he experienced the blackest night he had ever known. The sea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, the damage to the boat was not too serious, Chichester calmly got bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm again.
Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he arrived back in England, where more than 250,000 people were waiting to welcome him. He was knighted(授爵)by Queen Elizabeth II. The whole voyage had taken him nine months, of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to achieve.

主题01 人与自然——环保理念与可持续发展
So, she decided to move from
plastics and thought the only way was to learn how to make her own products. Then, while she was doing research online, she came across a blog called the “Zero Waste Home” started by a Californian family who live a completely zero-waste life.
1.What can we learn about Lauren Singer?
A.She founded a blog to collect trash. B.She produced little trash in eight years.
C.She prefers to keep trash in mason jars. D.She reduces the cost of sustainable products.
2.What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A.What inspired Singer’s reflection on college life.
B.How Singer learned to make her own products.
C.What led to Singer’s journey to zero waste.
D.How Singer thought about plastic-free life.
3.What is the first step in Singer’s new lifestyle?

A.Trees for a Greener World B.Green Roots to Empowerment
C.Facing Preservation Challenges D.Empowering Women through Leadership

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·福建泉州·期末)
In the distant Dulongjiang Township of Yunnan Province, there lived a remarkable woman named Li Yuhua. As an eco - forest guardian and a cultural inheritor (继承人) of the Derung people, she contributed to protecting the green mountains and helping villagers achieve a better life.
Once, Dulongjiang was distant, reachable only through winding mountain roads. The villagers lived a simple
life with poor transportation and limited resources. Li Yuhua, however, saw the potential in this land. She encouraged villagers to plant black cardamom,a crop suitable for the mountainous environment. The plant can be made into a spice (香料) that is used in many cuisine dishes and offers some health benefits. At first, villagers were hesitant. But with the support of the local government, Li Yuhua invited agricultural experts to teach the villagers
and increased the planting of this crop. By the end of 2021, over 46 square kilometers of land was used to grow black cardamom, creating a value of over 20 million yuan. The villagers’ annual income rose greatly, bringing hope to the entire community.

主题03 人与社会——商业创新与社会责任
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B 3.D

2.细节理解题。根据第二段“And yet no farmers seemed to be profiting from turmeric’s newfound fashion among wellness seekers. So she decided to reinvent the supply chain.(然而,似乎没有哪位农民能从这种在健康追求者中流行起来的姜黄粉中获利。于是,她决定重新构建供应链)”可知,贾维里·卡德里对供应链进行重新改造是因为农民们未能获得应有的利润。故选D。
3.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Javeri Kadri put in the only money she had — about $3,000 — to buy the freshest turmeric she could find and bring it to California. “I was hand-packing it in my basement and then selling it on the internet,” she remembers. Thanks to a talent for Instagram marketing and a few key contacts in the food world, the business took off.(贾维里·卡德里拿出她仅有的那点钱——约3000美元——购买了她能找到的最新鲜的姜黄,并将其运往加利福尼亚。她回忆道:“我在地下室亲手包装这些姜黄,然后在网上销售。”多亏了她在 Instagram 上的营销才能以及食品界的一些关键人脉,她的生意就此蓬勃发展起来)”可知,第三段主要讲的是贾维里·卡德里的企业是如何取得成功的。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据第四段“Unlike traditional spice companies, Diaspora deals directly with more than 150 farms, reaching thousands of farm-workers while paying them, on average, four times the market price. Passage 1
Over the course of more than 35 years, the Carters worked with over 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build and repair nearly 4,400 homes. They also raised funds for Habitat, connected its leaders with global officials, and helped promote its mission round the world. Known for his discipline, Carter was a demanding taskmaster. He expected volunteers to arrive on time to ensure focus on the task at hand. Typically on the Tuesday night of the workweek, Carter would visit each home construction site to see if the projects were on schedule. If they weren’t, he would call on additional volunteers to keep progress on track.
In 2019, at age 95, Carter took part in his final Habitat project in Nashville. He had fallen at home the day before and showed up at the work site with a bandage on his forehead. Despite this, he still assembled (组装) and

Passage 1
(23-24高一下·福建厦门·期末)
You might have thought that the world’s longest-serving lifeguard would be found on a sunny beach in California or Australia. But on a rainy British spring day, the Guinness World Records people held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working on the beach, which I love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?”
Lewis said friends used to rib (逗弄) him that his colleagues in Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were half his age. “Now they say they’re a third my age,” he said. But he is still fighting fit. RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds. And run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.
Lewis had ever suffered anxiety and depression. But he believes his training and the time spent on the beach relieved this. He now helps to train young lifeguards. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out exciting rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
1.Why does Lewis consider his job the best?
A.It enables him to get an award. B.It matches his interests and values.
C.It allows him to work at an old age. D.It wins him the beachgoers’ respect.
2.What is the purpose of the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show Lewis’ physical fitness. B.To analyze lifeguards’ safety risks.
C.To measure Lewis’ performance. D.To stress the training requirements.
3.What can we learn from Lewis’ words in the last paragraph?
A.Good advice sells for nothing. B.It’s never too late to rescue people.
C.Prevention is better than cure. D.Actions speak louder than words.
4.Which of the following best describes Lewis?
A.Devoted and creative. B.Knowledgeable and brave.
C.Kind and determined. D.Emotional and adventurous.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C 4.C
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了经验丰富的救生员Chris Lewis的事迹。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第一段内容“‘It’s the best job in the world,’ he said. ‘You’re working on the beach, which I love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?’(“这是世界上最好的工作,”他说。“你在海滩上工作,这是我喜欢的,你在帮助别人。还有比这更好的吗?”)”可知,在他看来,这份工作让他在喜欢的地方帮助到别人。由此可推知,他认为自己的这份工作是最棒的是因为这份工作符合他的兴趣和价值观。故选B项。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第二段内容“RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds. And run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.(RNLI的救生员必须在7.5分钟内游完400米泳池。
故选A项。
3.推理判断题。根据文章末尾段落内容“He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out exciting rescues. ‘I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.’(他说,提供建议以防止人们陷入麻烦比进行令人兴奋的救援更可取。“我希望整个夏天都不用去救任何人。”)”可知,在他看来,比起救援,能够提供建议以防止人们在这里陷入麻烦是更可取的。因此,从他的话里可以推知,在海边最好能做到“预防胜于治疗”或“防患于未然”。故选C项。
4.推理判断题。根据文章第一段内容“Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years.(现年74岁的Lewis 16岁时就开始在多塞特郡的海滩上工作,这意味着58年来他一直在帮助这里的沙滩使用者。)”可知,58年以来,他一直在沙滩上帮助人们,这说明,他是一个善良的人;而第二段内容“But he is still fighting fit.(但他仍在努力保持健康。)”以及“All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.(整个冬天,他每个月都在不穿潜水服的情况下进行3000米的海水游泳。)”提到他虽然年纪很大了,仍然在努力保持身体健康,并能做到冬天里每个月不穿潜水服进行3000米海水游泳,这说明他是一个意志坚定的人。故选C项。

As a child, Emily Blunt had a stutter(结巴) that made it difficult for her to even say her own name. “I started noticing it at 6 or 7,” the London-born actress says. “My grandfather, my uncle and my cousin all stutter. It feels like you’ve got this pretender living in your body.” After a teacher noticed her stutter disappeared whenever she would start to play energetically, he suggested she try performing for the school play. I want to support Malala until the day I die.”
Giving back is a quality Blunt and husband John Krasinski also hope to pass on to their daughters Hazel, 6, and Violet, 3. “Empathy is highly thought of in our house,” Blunt says. “We tell them all the time, ‘Be brave, be kind.’ ”
