I’m a millennial (千禧一代) who grew up in the US during the rise of the modern Internet and someone who has studied Chinese and lived in China for several years now. I’ve now become familiar both with the language and different slang (俚语) words in both Chinese and English. Yet, something that’s always stood out to me when comparing English and Chinese slang is the abundance of numerically-based slang words that work like code words for Chinese expressions. Let’s break down a few and compare.
We can start with 520. This number has a similar pronunciation to “I love you” in Chinese. The closest match I can think of in English to this would be something like “I <3 you” or “I heart you”, representing “I love you”. Still, the Chinese expression can be taken a step further through puns (双关语) using the date to represent the phrase in ways that English cannot.
Another number-based pun is “2333”. Now, this one may seem even more confusing to a native English speaker since, if you follow the same pattern, you will find the pronunciation doesn’t seem to relate to any Chinese expression. But here, we get the sound of laughter: ahahaha! Interesting, isn’t it?
Finally, saving the best for last, we have the famous phrase “666”. In Western culture, 666 is rarely seen as a lucky number; instead, it is often associated with evil forces or other unlucky signs. Yet, it is the complete opposite in Chinese, where 666 actually represents three repeated “liu” sounds. The hand gesture representing six—the thumb and little finger outstretched with the other fingers closed—is the same gesture in the US to represent something awesome or cool just happened!
Clearly, slang is dependent on the language and culture it originates from. Thus, things that may seem confusing to someone with a different native language or culture simply take some adaptation to view from the right perspective.
24.What unique feature of Chinese slang is highlighted in the text?
A.It is rich in number-related words. B.It has many humorous expressions.
C.It is affected by the rise of the Internet. D.It has some roots in the English language.
25.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.“I <3 you” is a direct translation of “520”.
B.Chinese number slang relies on pronunciation.
C.“2333” combines the sounds of four Chinese words.
D.The “six” hand gesture is perceived positively in the US.
26.What does the author suggest about the confusing foreign slang?
A.Focusing on similar slang in our language.
B.Learning about the original use of the slang.
C.Shifting our way of thinking to grasp the meaning.
D.Adapting the meaning from our cultural perspective.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To recommend a way to learn Chinese.
B.To compare slang and the culture behind it.
C.To teach readers to use online slang properly.
D.To clarify common misunderstandings of Chinese.

In the era of the internet, AI, smart homes and autonomous cars, there’s one thing we just can’t stop producing data. We are expected to generate 394 trillion zettabytes of the stuff every year by 2028, according to the analyst company IDC. Every time we watch a YouTube video, send an email, or ask an AI chatbot a question — data is created. Although data seems invisible, it is processed and housed in physical places — data centers, for which demand is now proving unsatisfiable.
The problem of storing this rapidly growing data has inspired novel solutions. One such approach is “memory crystals,” developed by Peter Kazansky, a researcher from Kyoto University. By burning tiny perforations into the glass, data can be encoded in five dimensions, using differences in light orientation, strength, and spatial position (individual 3D pixels with x, y, z coordinates). This method allows for extremely high density, with up to 360 TB stored on a 5-inch glass disk.
Another promising solution is DNA storage, first proposed by Soviet physicist Mikhail Samoilovich Neiman. In this method, digital data is mapped onto DNA’s four bases (A, T, C, and G), represented as 01, 00, 11, and 10, creating a physical form of data. A favorite line among DNA data storage researchers is that “you could store all of the data in the world in a teaspoon.” But its practical application still faces hurdles, especially in terms of cost and data access efficiency.
Heinis, a professor in data management at Imperial College London, says: “Kazansky’s ‘memory crystals’ is a direct competitor to DNA storage. But DNA might have an edge for we will always be able to read DNA, due to its wide-ranging medical applications. With other technologies, like ‘memory crystals’, the question is how long the read device will be around.”
Of course, solving the long-term data storage problem is an important part of the solution to energy-guzzling data centers. But do we really need all the data that we produce?
28.What problem does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A.The rapid growth of global data production.
B.The rising demand for automated equipment.
C.The efficiency of data-processing technologies.
D.The challenge of storing the ever-growing data.
29.What gives memory crystals their high data density?
A.Heat-resistant glass. B.Computer-controlled drilling.
C.High-intensity light. D.Multi-dimensional encoding.
30.What can be inferred from Heinis’s words?
A.DNA storage has stronger reliability.
B.DNA storage keeps larger data storage capacity.
C.DNA storage owns a wider range of application.
D.DNA storage will soon replace memory crystals.
31.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Reduce data center noise. B.Cut data centers’ energy use.
C.Stop over-storage of data. D.Upgrade storage technology.

Chinese regulators approved what officials describe as the world’s first invasive brain-computer interface device cleared for commercial use in patients. The device, known as the NEO system, was developed by Shanghai-based company Neuracle Medical Technology. On March 13, 2026, China’s National Medical Products Administration granted it a Class III medical device certificate — the country’s highest regulatory classification — allowing it to enter clinical use.
The system is designed to help patients with quadriplegia (四肢瘫痪) caused by spinal injuries regain limited hand function. It combines an implanted brain-computer interface (BCI), an implantable EEG electrode kit, and a pneumatic robotic glove that assists with grasping movements.
The system works by reading neural (神经的) signals associated with movement. When a patient thinks about moving their hand, the coin-sized sensors implanted above the brain’s protective membrane detect those signals and transmit them wirelessly to the robotic glove, which then moves the patient’s fingers to grasp or release objects. The device uses an epidural implantation approach, reducing potential damage to brain tissue while maintaining signal quality.
The system is also battery-free. A magnetic coil powers the implant wirelessly, eliminating the need for patients to remove the device for charging. After implantation, patients may be able to operate the system independently at home about one month after surgery.
In clinical trials involving 36 participants, all patients showed improvements in hand grasping ability. Researchers also observed signs of neural remodeling in some cases, suggesting the technology may help stimulate the recovery of additional neurological function.
Mao Ying, president of Huashan Hospital — which has conducted the largest number of clinical cases — said that various versions of the technology are being tested, and that patients have already made a remarkable recovery in the lower limbs. However, he cautioned that BCI technology is still in its early stages. “We hope the public understands that current BCI technology cannot yet cure all patients. It only applies to a small number of people who need extensive training and rehabilitation.”
32.How does the NEO system help patients regain hand function?
A.By repairing damaged spinal nerves through electrical stimulation.
B.By implanting a battery-powered device stimulating hand muscles directly.
C.By training patients to use their thoughts to regenerate damaged brain tissue.
D.By reading neural signals and controlling a robotic glove to move the fingers.
33.What do the signs of neural remodeling in some cases indicate?
A.The technology can fully restore patients’ neurological function.
B.Neural remodeling results from improved hand grasping ability.
C.All patients will achieve neural remodeling after the implantation.
D.The technology may contribute to more neurological function recovery.
34.What does Mao Ying think of current BCI technology?
A.Immature. B.Promising. C.Controversial. D.Doubtful.
35.Which of the following can be the most suitable title?
A.Breakthroughs in Quadriplegia Treatment
B.Neural Remodeling in Clinical BCI Trials
C.China Approves First Commercial BCI Device
D.Experts Caution the Limits of BCI Technology
It’s easy to give in to the winter hibernation (冬眠) urge — but countless studies have shown that outdoors activity is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). 36 Here’s how to make the best use of our natural health service.
Starting small.
“Sometimes getting out and running 5km was like climbing Everest. It would take me all day just to find the energy to get out,” says Alex Staniforth, a mental health campaigner. 37 Try opening a window, sitting by natural light, or bringing nature indoors with plants. When you’re ready, aim for short, achievable goals like a five-minute walk. You don’t need hours. Aiming for regular activity is key.
38
Mental health and fitness coach Gareth Jones emphasized that good planning and structure are crucial. “If you know you’re struggling with motivation, laying out all your kit — from your socks all the way up to the food you’re going to take — can be helpful,” he says. “ 39 You might want to get out when you get to the front door — but if you have to go and search for your trainers because they’re lost under the stairs somewhere, you may not feel like going out at all.”
Group support.
Social commitments can also act as motivation for people with depression and anxiety. Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help. 40 “People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth. “It doesn’t matter where people are now in their lives, they’ve had to work to get there. And you’ll get there too.”
A.A clear goal.
B.A structured approach.
C.However, don’t compare yourself to others.
D.A disorganized life can affect your motivation.
E.Therefore, doctors are encouraging people to go outdoors more.
F.But time in nature isn’t the only cure for mental health problems.
G.If this sounds familiar, remember even small steps can bring benefits.

Before sunrise, Beijing parks look ordinary in winter — bare trees, empty benches, a few early risers. But then, a melody begins, 56 (float) through the air, and suddenly the space is transformed. People gather, strangers become neighbors, 57 art fills the public space with possibility.
Sun Chubo, a young bamboo flute (长笛) professional from the China National Opera and Dance Drama, has moved the stage from the theater to the masses. The countless 58 (like) both offline and online prove that this is 59 means for art to burst forth with vigorous and dynamic vitality.
“In outdoor performances, I can see everyone’s expressions up close. It is much easier to intuitively (直觉地) sense whether the audience enjoys the piece I am playing and 60 (feel) their emotions directly,” Sun told the Global Times.
When artists move into public spaces to create and perform, art steps out from the closed environment of theaters into the more open settings of public life, making itself truly seen, 61 (hear), and participated in. Meanwhile, authentic audience feedback and the 62 (interact) atmosphere of live events often inspire artists, pushing them to reconsider 63 they express themselves through their work.
From the depths of a bamboo forest to city squares, the venue may change, but the connection between art and the public 64 (remain) constant. When performers enter more public spaces and residents pause 65 art, this “mutual journey” in the city’s public spaces gives art its truest warmth.

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in? She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams?” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion (叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else?”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rules could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity?
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...

W: I’d love that. It’s been way too long and I desperately need to store some fresh food.
Text 9
W: Hey, Tom. You’ve been busy lately. What keeps you so occupied?

根据文章第一段“Yet, something that’s always stood out to me when comparing English and Chinese slang is the abundance of numerically-based slang words that work like code words for Chinese expressions.(然而,当我比较英语和汉语俚语时,有一点总是很突出,那就是大量的数字俚语,就像汉语表达的暗语一样。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第四段“The hand gesture representing six—the thumb and little finger outstretched with the other fingers closed—is the same gesture in the US to represent something awesome or cool just happened!(在美国,代表数字六的手势——拇指和小指伸出,其余手指弯曲——也是表示刚刚发生了令人惊叹或很酷的事情的手势!)”
根据文章最后一段“Thus, things that may seem confusing to someone with a different native language or culture simply take some adaptation to view from the right perspective.(因此,某些看似令人困惑的事物,对于母语或文化背景不同的人来说,只需稍作适应便能从正确视角看待。)”

根据第二段中的“By burning tiny perforations into the glass, data can be encoded in five dimensions, using differences in light orientation, strength, and spatial position (individual 3D pixels with x, y, z coordinates). This method allows for extremely high density, with up to 360 TB stored on a 5-inch glass disk.(通过在玻璃上烧制微小微孔,可利用光的偏振方向、光强、空间位置(带有 x、y、z 三维坐标的独立 3D 像素)这五类维度对数据进行编码。该存储方式存储密度极高,一张 5 英寸玻璃圆盘的存储容量最高可达 360 太字节。)” 可知,多维编码让记忆晶体拥有超高数据存储密度。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段中的““But DNA might have an edge for we will always be able to read DNA, due to its wide-ranging medical applications. With other technologies, like ‘memory crystals’, the question is how long the read device will be around.”(“但 DNA存储或许更有优势:由于DNA在医学领域应用广泛,人类永远有办法读取它。而对于记忆晶体这类其他存储技术,一个问题是:对应的读取设备能存续多久、未来还能不能用。”)” 可知,DNA存储具备更强的可靠性。
31.推理判断题。根据原文最后一段中的“But do we really need all the data that we produce?(但我们真的需要把产生的所有数据都保存下来吗?)”

根据第三段“The system works by reading neural (神经的) signals associated with movement. When a patient thinks about moving their hand, the coin-sized sensors implanted above the brain’s protective membrane detect those signals and transmit them wirelessly to the robotic glove, which then moves the patient’s fingers to grasp or release objects.(该系统通过读取与运动相关的神经信号来工作。当患者想到移动他们的手时,植入大脑保护膜上方的硬币大小的传感器会检测到这些信号,并将其无线传输给机械手套,然后机械手套移动患者的手指来抓握或释放物体)”可知,NEO系统通过读取神经信号并控制机械手套移动手指来帮助患者恢复手部功能。
33.细节理解题。根据第五段“Researchers also observed signs of neural remodeling in some cases, suggesting the technology may help stimulate the recovery of additional neurological function.(研究人员还在一些病例中观察到神经重塑的迹象,这表明该技术可能有助于刺激额外的神经功能恢复)”可知,神经重塑的迹象表明该技术可能有助于更多的神经功能恢复。
根据最后一段“However, he cautioned that BCI technology is still in its early stages.(然而,他警告说,脑机接口技术仍处于早期阶段)”可知,毛颖认为当前的脑机接口技术还不成熟。
根据第一段“Chinese regulators approved what officials describe as the world’s first invasive brain-computer interface device cleared for commercial use in patients.(中国监管机构批准了官员们所说的世界上首个获准在患者中商业使用的侵入性脑机接口设备)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了中国批准首个可商业使用的侵入性脑机接口设备(NEO系统)及其相关信息,因此C选项“China Approves First Commercial BCI Device(中国批准首个商业脑机接口设备)”最符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。

40.上文“Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help.( 身边有其他人的陪伴——无论是加入一个俱乐部还是与朋友一起参与某项活动——真的很有帮助。)” 下文““People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth.( “人们会在社交媒体上迅速晒出自己的成就,但你看不到的是背后的积累过程,”加雷斯说)”引用加雷斯的话,指出社交媒体上展示的只是别人的成就,看不到背后的付出,不要盲目比较。C 选项“However, don’t compare yourself to others.( 但是,不要拿自己和他人作比较。)”

此处三个分句“People gather”,“strangers become neighbors”,“art fills the public space”为并列关系,应用连词and连接最后一个分句。故填and。

Paragraph 1: As the students worked. Mary observed them with curiosity. She noticed how Akila, initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
Paragraph 2: Mary stood back and surveyed the creation. The enormous canvas had transformed into a magnificent portrayal of each student’s imagination, forming a breathtaking landscape that reflected their individuality yet spoke to their collective spirit. Mary felt a sense of pride swell within her; she realized that in letting go of rigid structures, her students gave their painting an unrealistic but dream-like quality. Akila, Tina, and the rest of the class had not only embraced their own creative paths but had also nurtured each other’s ideas. They were thrilled, “It was the best painting ever! We should definitely hang it on the wall!” Inspired by the moment, Mary decided to host an exhibition of their dream world, inviting parents and other classes to admire the beauty of imagination unleashed in her classroom.
