A story of kindness: the help I passed on
Caring for others helps build a warmer community. Last Sunday, I visited elderly neighbours with friends. We helped clean their homes, did some shopping, and spent time chatting, playing chess, and teaching them to use phones. At first, some were shy and refused help, and communicating with hearing-impaired seniors required great patience. Seeing their smiles, I learned small acts of kindness can make a real difference. This meaningful experience encouraged me to keep helping others and pass on kindness whenever I can.

Last year, I went to a poor mountain village as a volunteer teacher. I stayed there for three months. That experience changed my life a lot.
When I first arrived there, I was shocked by the poor living conditions. The school was very old and small. There were only three classrooms and one office. The students had no books or pens. They had to write on the ground with sticks. But the students were very hard-working. They got up early every morning and walked a long way to school. They loved studying very much.
I taught them Chinese, English and Math. I also told them stories about the outside world. They were very interested in my stories and always asked me a lot of questions. I felt very happy when I saw the bright smiles on their faces.
After class, I played games with the students. We played basketball, badminton and hide-and-seek. They also taught me how to pick wild fruits and catch fish in the river. We had a lot of fun together.
When it was time for me to leave, the students were very sad. They gave me many gifts they made by themselves, such as paper flowers and cards. They said they would miss me very much. I cried too. I promised them that I would come back to see them again.
Now, I often write letters to the students. They also write to me and tell me about their study and life. That volunteer experience taught me that love is the most beautiful thing in the world. It can make the world a better place.

For most people in Guangdong, Minqin, a county (县) in Gansu Province, is a strange name. It lies in the northeastern part of the Hexi Corridor, surrounded by the Tengger and Badain Jaran Deserts on three sides. The desertified (沙漠化) land there takes up 88.18% of the county’s total area. The annual rainfall is only about 100 millimeters, while the evaporation rate is over 2,000 millimeters. It is one of the main sources of sandstorms in China.
Since 1950, local people have been fighting against desertification, building three lines of defense to stop the two deserts from moving south. In 2024, a public welfare activity called “Come Plant a Tree in Minqin” became popular online. It has attracted tens of thousands of volunteers from all over China. By the end of spring planting this year, over 32,000 volunteers had come to Minqin, including a large group from Guangdong, more than 2,000 kilometers away.
On April 23, a post-1995 (95后) girl named Chen Yumeng from Shenzhen was working in the planting area. It was her fifth day in Minqin and her first day as the team leader. Suddenly, a strong sandstorm came. The wind was blowing at force 7-8, carrying yellow sand. The sky turned dark yellow at once. Chen held the first-aid kit in her pocket and called her teammates to gather near the water truck. Sand hitting her windbreaker made a loud sound, but she stayed calm and kept everyone safe.
Many other young people from Guangdong also changed their plans to join the activity. Some gave up their planned trips to the northwest; others changed their flight tickets right at the airport. They came to the desert with only simple tools, and planted trees one by one, bringing “Guangdong Green” to the dry land. By April 25, the activity had finished planting 2,000 mu of land and moved into the seedling care period. Every tree planted by the volunteers will grow into a part of the green wall, protecting the land from sandstorms.
26.The underlined word “evaporation” in Para. 1 probably means ________.
A.dehydration B.rainfall C.dirt D.temperature
27.The writer uses the example of Chen Yumeng in Paragraph 3 mainly to ________.
A.introduce the weather of Minqin
B.show how serious the sandstorm was
C.describe the challenges volunteers face
D.explain how to be a good team leader
28.Which picture best matches the main activity described in the passage?
A.B.C. D.
29.Where is this passage most likely from?
A.A science textbook about plants
B.A travel guidebook for Gansu
C.A news report about environmental protection
D.A storybook about teenagers’ adventures
30.According to the passage, what will most probably happen next?
A.Chen Yumeng will go back to Shenzhen immediately.
B.Minqin will stop the tree-planting activity forever.
C.The two deserts will soon meet in the middle of Minqin.
D.The volunteers will continue to take care of the young trees.

五.阅读表达(10分)
Last year, I left my job and went to work without pay in the rainforest. So many people have said to me, “I would love to do something like that.” And I say, “If you want to, just do it.” They always reply, “I cannot.” But, if you really want to do it, there are ways to make it happen.
After three days’ training, I started work on an environmental project with a group of young people. The living place was very basic and we had to build our own place to sleep. This included a simple bed, a cloth roof and a net to keep insects out.
It was never dangerous there, but it was very challenging. There were things that we didn’t think we would manage to do, but we did. I had some of my worst moments there, but also some of my best—it made me feel alive. I didn’t miss my home as much as I thought. We had food, water, somewhere to stay, about three sets of clothes and really good friends. We were in the most beautiful place and we had things to keep us busy. We didn’t need any more.
One of the volunteers said, “Before we came here, it was really important to me what clothes I wore and who my friends were. I was always thinking about shoes, but really none of that matters. Here, people accept me for who I am, what I believe and think, not for what kind of clothes I’ve got.” What she said truly came from the bottom of my heart.
56.Where did the author work last year?
57.What did the author do before she started on an environmental project?
58.What was the author’s living place like?
59.What did the volunteer think was important before she came to the forest?

57.What did the author do before she started on an environmental project?
