Last autumn, I volunteered at a remote forest reserve, hoping to escape the busy city life and reconnect with nature. I didn’t expect a brief encounter with a little fox to change my view of the wild world forever.
On a cold misty morning, I was patrolling the woodland trail when I caught sight of a small red fox. It was sitting quietly beside an old pine tree, staring at me with bright round eyes. Instead of running away immediately as most wild animals did, it tilted its head curiously, as if studying a stranger. I froze, holding my breath, afraid that any small movement would scare it off.
Slowly, I lowered my body and kept still. Minutes passed gently. To my surprise, the fox took a few careful steps toward me. Its fur shone softly in the weak sunlight filtering through the leaves. I could even notice the tiny white spots on its tail. It stopped just several meters away, watching me without fear. At that moment, all my worries and tiredness melted into the quietness of the forest.
Before long, a soft call came from the distant bushes. The fox turned its head, then glanced back at me once more. It waved its tail lightly and ran off into the woods, disappearing among the fallen leaves. I stood there for a long time, filled with warmth and amazement.
Nature is not merely a landscape we admire from afar. It is a world full of gentle lives. That short meeting taught me that respect and silence are the best bridges between humans and wild creatures. While I was a medical student, the adaptability I learned from my parents when I was a boy was tested by the chaos of a series of events in Lebanon. Many people, including my parents, lost their life savings due to economic crises. Despite all that, I remained focused and completed my degree.
Finally, it was my turn to leave home in search of a brighter future. I arrived in Utah as a postdoctoral fellow, hoping to gain research experience to back my application to US medical residency programs. However, research proved far more challenging than I expected. In medicine, I was trained to diagnose (诊断) and treat patients, with clear and often immediate outcomes. The lab was a different world — experiments took time to set up, data had to be carefully analyzed, and results often didn’t come out as expected. One set of experiments failed entirely at first — then took months of controlling one variable after another to get running. And I faced new challenges, including leading projects and guiding students. All these helped me a lot in many aspects, especially in my determination on the research path.
Yet some people around me provided vital support. A postdoc taught me the importance of note taking, technicians helped me design experiments, and my advisers expressed faith in my ability to complete projects. Sharing meals and laughter with colleagues as we explored Salt Lake City created a sense of belonging that enriched both my work and life. And my memories of Lebanon and the adaptability of its people strengthened my resolve.
Initially, I viewed my postdoctoral position as a steppingstone to my medical career. But now, 2 years into it, I am seriously considering becoming a physician-scientist. This transition (过渡) will bridge my past and future, enabling me to stay grounded in the values that shaped me while accepting the potential and complexities of research. I don’t know whether or when I’ll return to Lebanon, but the lessons I learned there will be with me for life.
8. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To inspire deeper thinking. B. To present an argument.
C. To make a comparison. D. To tell the background.
9. What can we learn from the author’s postdoctoral career?
A. Barriers could be avoided. B. Challenges fueled growth.
C. Clinical work was relaxing. D. Diagnosis was stress-free.
10. How did the author become more adaptable?
A. By building social bonds and recalling.
B. By using self-directed learning method.
C. By reflecting upon his past and present.
D. By reading touching stories of Lebanon.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Economic Crisis and Career Choices
B. Lab Challenges and Clinical Practice
C. Medical Research Is Harder than Clinical Work
D. Adaptability and Support Help Reshape Life Path
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools that permit people to produce online reviews have put sellers, service providers and buyers in unfamiliar territory, public protection groups and researchers say.
False reviews have long appeared on many popular websites. The reviews are often traded on private social media groups between fake (假的) review dealers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, businesses get good reviews in exchange for offering buyers rewards such as gift cards.
The Transparency Company is a technology company and public protection group that uses software to detect fake reviews. The company said it started to see AI-generated reviews appear in large numbers in mid-2023. The reviews have increased quickly ever since.
Major companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing fake reviews. Some companies already employ special programmes and investigative teams to find and remove fake reviews. Still, the companies are giving users some ability to use AI. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking. com launched last year, said that even though people may put AI to illegal use,the technology also presents “an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others”.
Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, say their technology has blocked or removed a large number of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more.
Consumers can try to find fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs, researchers say. Overly good or bad reviews are suspect. Highly specialized terms that repeat a product’s full name or model number are another possible clue.
When it comes to AI, research done by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor, has shown that people cannot tell the difference between AI-created and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said.
However, there are some AI clues that online shoppers and service seekers should keep in mind. Reviews written with AI are often longer, highly structured and include “empty descriptors”. Empty descriptors include general phrases and attributes or characteristics. The writing also often includes overused phrases or opinions like “the first thing that struck me” and “game-changer”.
12. How does The Transparency Company find fake reviews?
A. By appointing experts to the job.
B. By calling on volunteers to check them.
C. By offering users rewards.
D. By making the use of software.
13. What can be learned about major companies?
A. People will not see fake reviews in their websites.
B. They think AI is useless to seek suspicious accounts.
C. Experts are satisfied with their reaction to suspect reviews.
D. They allowed users to take advantage of AI to some extent.
14. Which review could possibly be written using AI?
A. Got it today, works fine for my needs.
B. Not bad, but the price is a bit high.
C. It’s an excellent product with great quality.
D. Stopped working after 3 days, don’t buy.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. There is growing concern about false reviews.
B. AI tools are often used for faking product reviews.
C. We are living in a world that depends more on AI.
D. AI’s recent developments have got a lot of social attention.

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was the third week of my senior year, and our class was organizing a charity sale to raise money for the local children’s hospital. Everyone was busy preparing: some brought hand-made crafts, some donated books, and others planned to sell snacks. I was in charge of the craft stall with my best friend Lily, excited to contribute.
Just as we set up the stall, a new student named Lin Xiao stood awkwardly nearby. She had transferred to our class a month earlier and rarely spoke, always sitting quietly by the window. I noticed she held a canvas bag full of delicate paper cranes and origami flowers, her fingers twisting the strap nervously. “Do you want to join our stall?” I asked with a smile. She shook her head quickly, mumbled “I’m not good at talking to people,” and hurried away.
By noon, our stall was crowded, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Lin Xiao. I remembered how lonely I felt when I first moved to the city — no friends, no one to talk to. Lily noticed my distraction and said, “Why not go find her? Those paper crafts look beautiful; they’ll definitely sell well.” Taking a deep breath, I walked toward the classroom.
When I pushed the door open, Lin Xiao was sitting at her desk, staring at her crafts with a sad expression. Before I could speak, the classroom loudspeaker announced: “The charity sale will end in two hours. Please bring all your items to the playground as soon as possible.”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

By the time the charity sale ended, we had sold all of Lin Xiao’s crafts and raised a lot of money.

We live together on the same earth, and peaceful coexistence is the most precious gift we can share.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. D

【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. B

____18____. Time in nature is an essential investment in your children’s health and wellbeing. If you view nature time as essential to good health, you will be more likely to engage in it. If you want to raise your healthy and well-balanced children, cultivating creativity and wonder is part of your responsibility as parents.
Look at the stars. Visit your local observatory, and then drive out of the city some morning or evening for your own stargazing (天体观察) with a blanket and telescope. Observing the stars offers a deeper and wider understanding of the universe. ____19____

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
I gently tapped Lin Xiao on the shoulder and said softly, “Your crafts are amazing — let’s share them with others.”

By the time the charity sale ended, we had sold all of Lin Xiao’s crafts and raised a lot of money.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I gently tapped Lin Xiao on the shoulder and said softly, “Your crafts are amazing — let’s share them with others.” She looked up, her eyes wide with surprise, then glanced down at her paper cranes. “But… what if no one likes them?” she whispered. I picked up a delicate origami flower, its folds precise and elegant. “Trust me,” I said, “these aren’t just crafts — they’re stories. Each one could bring joy to someone.” Seeing her hesitation, I added, “Lily and I will help you. You don’t have to talk much; just arrange them on the stall.” She nodded, gathered her canvas bag, and followed me to the playground.
By the time the charity sale ended, we had sold all of Lin Xiao’s crafts and raised a lot of money. As we packed up the stall, Lin Xiao’s earlier nervousness had melted away. Lily grinned, handing Lin Xiao a tally sheet: “Your crafts alone brought in over half of our stall’s donations!” Lin Xiao’s cheeks flushed with pride. “Thank you for not giving up on me,” she said quietly. I squeezed her hand, realizing that this charity sale had done more than raise funds; it had given a shy girl the courage to share her talent, and woven her into the fabric of our class community.
