With dangerous temperatures, many people went to the store to pick up extra food and blankets. But for many seniors, that’s simply impossible. Programs like Meals on Wheels deliver food and make sure everyone has what they need to stay warm.
As temperatures hit a record low today, the task of Meals on Wheels volunteers is even more important as they pack up hot meals.
“It needs to be done, so like I said, I’ve been doing it for four years. Winter, summer, I haven’t stopped,” said Kishore Chukkla, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
Richard Henry, 70, is one of those seniors who needs a meal delivery. For him, it means a lot. “Of course. As a veteran (退伍老兵) and as someone who’s up in age, it’s always good to know that there are people out there who really care and who really think about you. Because when you get old, people are likely to forget about you,” Henry said.
On days when the temperature gets dangerously low, Meals on Wheels volunteers must brave the cold to check on those who need help.
“It’s hard for people that are homebound to get out on a nice day, let alone a day like this, so it is surely important for us to make sure that they have the food that they need, that someone is checking on them, to make sure that they have heat and that it’s turned on,” said Austin.
“When you have a volunteer, good people take the time to volunteer to do this. I don’t know what most people think about it, but I appreciate it,” Henry said.
Meals on Wheels still needs more help. They’re looking for volunteers, so if you want to lend a hand, please visit volunteer.vnatexas.org to learn more.

When we were kids, learning polite expressions was important. Our parents taught us to say “thank you” when we received help, and to say “please” when we needed help from others. But would you say “thank you” and “please” to a digital assistant (助手) ?
Amazon, a US company, said it added new features to its smart assistant Alexa. One of the developments—a politeness feature—pays attention to parents’ worries about their children forgetting their manners because they have become used to shouting orders at Alexa.
When kids ask Alexa to work out a Maths problem using the word “please”—as in “Alexa, please tell me what 3 and 7 are?” —Alexa will not only give the correct answer, but also give the following reply: “Thanks for asking so nicely.”
However, ________, as children can tell the difference between machines and humans. But thinking back to our everyday life, we don’t usually shout loudly to a TV. “I ask Siri to turn on the lights in the same natural language that I use in daily life,” Chaim said. “It doesn’t matter that my digital assistant can’t hear or understand it—it matters that I say it.”
With the increasing use of AI, developing the habit of being polite in everyday life is becoming even more important, as the British research company ChildWise found. In January, it published a report warning that people who become used to cutting polite words and giving orders to digital assistants might become impolite when dealing with others.
Indeed, as German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel wrote, one is worse off if they treat their machines in an unfriendly way. And Manu Kumar once said, “One of my standards (标准) for deciding how nice someone is by watching how they talk and act with a waiter. In a similar way, even if AI doesn’t care about it, other people around us are going to experience how we deal with it. We shouldn’t forget why we have the digital assistants and how to deal with them.”
1.According to Paragraphs 2 and 3, what’s TRUE about the new Alexa?
A.It shouts answers. B.It only follows children’s orders.
C.It helps children learn good manners. D.It refuses to answer if it’s treated impolitely.
2.Which sentence can be put in the “________”?
A.children need to be polite to a machine as well
B.children are good at getting along with others
C.Alexa is not only eleven, but also can act like a human
D.some people believe kids don’t have to thank a machine
3.What did ChildWise find about people who treat machines badly?
A.They become less important people. B.They take more interest in giving orders.
C.They might be impolite to other people. D.They don’t know how to deal with others.
4.What might the writer talk about in the following part?
A.Problems caused by digital assistants. B.Ways to deal with digital assistants.
C.Wonderful uses of digital assistants. D.The hopeful future of digital assistants.

1.文章①段后的原句“Your experience of being a volunteer gives the interviewer (面试官) a clearer picture of who you are.”,志愿者经历可以帮助面试官更好地了解你。

1.第二段指出研究发现:“One of the developments—a politeness feature—pays attention to parents’ worries about their children forgetting their manners because they have become used to shouting orders at Alexa.”,说明新增的礼貌功能关注到父母对孩子因习惯对Alexa发号施令而忘记礼貌的担忧,结合第三段内容可知新Alexa能帮助孩子学习良好礼仪。
2.第四段提到“However…as children can tell the difference between machines and humans.”,结合后文“Chaim”所说“I ask Siri to turn on the lights in the same natural language that I use in daily life...it matters that I say it.”表明有些人认为孩子不必感谢机器,所以“some people believe kids don’t have to thank a machine”可填入此处。
3.第五段说明原因:“In January, it published a report warning that people who become used to cutting polite words and giving orders to digital assistants might become impolite when dealing with others.”,直接表明习惯对数字助手不礼貌且发号施令的人在与他人打交道时可能会不礼貌。
4.最后一段提到“We shouldn’t forget why we have the digital assistants and how to deal with them.”,说明作者接下来可能会谈论处理数字助手的方法,“Ways to deal with digital assistants”符合推测。

Dear Rose,
In your last letter, you told me that you would come to Japan for vacation in July. But you were very worried, because you don’t know 1 you can or can’t do in Japanese restaurants. Now, I am writing to tell you the table manners there and how 2 (behavior) in a restaurant,
Some restaurants in Japan have tatami (榻榻米) floors. When you step 3 a restaurant, you must take off your shoes. When you sit at the table, you will receive a small wet cloth at most Japanese restaurants. Use this to wash your hands before eating, then 4 (care) fold it and set it aside on the table. Don’t use it as a napkin (餐巾纸), or 5 (touch) any part of your face.
Before and after a meal, it is important to say 6 (tradition) thank-you words. You can make a little noise when you’re eating. For example, it is common to make some slurping (咂嘴) noises while 7 (eat) noodles. That’s because in Japan if you slurp, it means the food 8 (tasty) good. For sushi, you should eat up. It is polite to lift small bowls of rice or soup when you eat. After finishing your meal, it is good manners to restore all your dishes to the way they were at the 9 (begin) of the meal. For example, you can put chopsticks back on the chopsticks shelf.
Write to me if you have other questions. Hope you can enjoy 10 in Japan.
Yours,
Jack

Nowadays, “the world at one click” is not just a phrase—it’s a real way to travel. Many people use virtual tools to explore places they’ve never been to, and it’s changing 1 (slow) how we plan trips.
Last week, Mr Lee’s class did a project about global cultures. Each student had to 2 (book) a “virtual trip” and write short 3 (report) about what they learnt. For example, Amy chose to “visit” Mexico. She used 4 online tool to see a market. People there had 5 (sign) boards with bags and hats prices.
When 6 (talk) virtual travel, the biggest advantage is its simplicity. You don’t need 7 (buy) plane tickets, wait at airports, or carry heavy luggage. You can “go” to a castle in Scotland in the morning and a rainforest in Brazil in the afternoon—all from your desk.
Some people say virtual travel isn’t as good as real trips. 8 it’s a great 9 (choose) for those who can’t travel far, like the elderly or busy students. It lets them learn about different countries and cultures easily, without 10 (leave) home. With just one click, the world opens up to everyone!
1.slowly 2.book 3.reports 4.an 5.sign 6.talking 7.to buy 8.but 9.choice 10.leaving

“when”引导的时间状语从句中,主语与主句主语一致(均为“the biggest advantage”),且从句中含有be动词,可省略主语和be动词,直接用现在分词形式,“talk”的现在分词是“talking”,“when talking”相当于“when we are talking about”。
“need to do sth”是固定搭配,意为“需要做某事”,故空格处需填动词不定式“to buy”。
