二、阅读理解
When I was a little girl, I lived in a small town in Alabama with my brother Jem and my father Atticus. My father was a lawyer, and he always taught us to be polite, kind and respectful to everyone, no matter who they were.
One day, there was an old lady named Mrs. Dubose who lived near our house. She was very old and sick, and she was always in a bad mood. Every time we walked past her house, she would shout at us and say bad things about our family. Jem hated her very much, and he always wanted to shout back at her.
But my father always told us, “Be polite to her, no matter what she says. She is old and sick, and she is in pain. You should hold your head high and be a gentleman.”
One day, Mrs. Dubose said something very bad about my father. Jem got very angry. He ran into her yard and broke all the flowers in her garden with a stick.
When my father found out, he was very serious. He said to Jem, “You must go to her and say sorry. And you must read to her every afternoon for a month.”
Jem was very upset, but he did what my father told him. He went to Mrs. Dubose’s house every afternoon, and read to her for two hours. At first, Mrs. Dubose shouted at him and said bad things, but Jem sat there quietly and listened politely. He didn’t shout back, even though he was very angry.
As time went by, Mrs. Dubose shouted less and less. She just listened to Jem read quietly.
A month later, Mrs. Dubose died. My father told Jem that Mrs. Dubose was fighting a very hard battle against a serious illness. She wanted to stop taking the medicine before she died, and Jem’s reading helped her get through the pain.
“She was a very brave lady,” my father said. “You did a great thing, Jem. You were polite to her, even when she was not kind to you. That’s true courage and good manners.”
Jem looked at my father, and he finally understood. Good manners are not just being polite to people who are kind to you. It’s being respectful and kind to everyone, even when it’s hard. That’s the most important thing about being a good person.

Do you sometimes walk into a room and forget why you went there? Or meet someone and suddenly can’t remember their name? You might feel annoyed or even embarrassed. But scientists say that forgetting is actually a normal and even useful part of how our brains work.
In a recent interview, neuroscientist Dr Lisa Chen explained why forgetting is not always a bad thing. “Imagine if you remembered every single detail of your life—every face you passed on the street, every meal you ate last year, every phone number you ever used. Your brain would be so full of information that it would be hard to find what you really need,” she said. “Forgetting helps us clear out unnecessary information so we can focus on what matters.”
Another reason we forget is to make room for new information. For example, when you learn a new school timetable or a new bus route, your brain needs to let go of the old one. Being able to forget old or unimportant details helps us adapt to new situations.
There’s also a common experience called the “tip-of-the-tongue” feeling. You know you know a word or a name, but you just can’t say it at that moment. Interestingly, people with a larger vocabulary often experience this more often, because their brains have more information to sort through to find the right word.
So the next time you forget something, don’t worry too much. Your brain is probably just doing its job—cleaning up to make space for something new.
1.How does the writer introduce the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving examples.
C.By asking questions. D.By listing numbers.
2.According to Dr Lisa Chen, why is forgetting useful?
A.It helps us remember everything clearly. B.It clears out unnecessary information.
C.It makes our brains work slower. D.It helps us avoid learning new things.
3.Who is more likely to experience the “tip-of-the-tongue” feeling?
A.People with a smaller vocabulary. B.People who never forget anything.
C.People with a larger vocabulary. D.People who don’t read books.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why forgetting can be good. B.To teach people how to remember better.
C.To describe how memory works. D.To advise people to forget everything.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A
