Text 10 运动改善身心健康
M: Did you know that regular physical activity can significantly improve mental health? Exercise is not only good for the body, but also plays a crucial role in enhancing mood and reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. [18] In fact, studies show that people who engage in at least half an hour of moderate exercise most days report feeling happier and more relaxed.
Other research suggests that even shorter periods of intense exercise or longer sessions of light activity can produce similar benefits.
Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming can help the brain release chemicals that make people feel good. These natural substances reduce stress and create a sense of well-being.
[19] Furthermore, exercise can improve sleep quality, which is important for overall mental health.
[20] Researchers conducted a study with 300 participants over a six-month period. Half of the group committed to a regular exercise routine, while the other half continued with their usual lifestyle. The findings showed that those who exercised experienced a 40% reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to those who didn’t.
So, if you’re feeling low or stressed, consider getting active as a simple yet effective way to improve your mood!

This year some twentythree hundred teenagers(young people aged from 13-19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a twoway student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son, Mike, spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批评) American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
24.This year ________ teenagers will take part in the exchange programme between America and other countries.
A.twentythree hundred
B.thirteen hundred
C.over three thousand
D.less than two thousand
25.The whole exchange programme is mainly to ________.
A.help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B.send students in America to travel in Germany
C.let students learn something about other countries
D.have teenagers learn new languages
26.Fred and Mike agree that ________.
A.America food tasted better than German food
B.German schools were harder than American schools
C.Americans and Germans were both friendly
D.There were more cars on the streets in America
27.What is particular in American schools is that ________.
A.there is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings
B.there are a lot of afterschool activities
C.students usually take fourteen subjects in all
D.students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car

25. 答案:C 解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America.”和“to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world”说明这个计划的目的就是让年轻人了解另外一种文化,故C正确。

How do you read? Some people only read dialogue, while others might skip long sections of text or only read the first and last sentences in a paragraph. Others say they read each word and revisit the same section two or three times to ensure that they don't miss anything.
The digital age has had a significant impact on how we read. Surveys show that Americans read fewer books per year than 30 years ago. Although the rise of social media communities has increased book sales over the last few years, the average American spends about 26 minutes reading per day, compared to three hours on the Internet or watching TV.
Nowadays, we spend more time skimming (略读) and scanning rather than close reading. Some experts worry about the loss of our ability to slow down and read deeply. So, is there a "right" way to read?
Skimming is a common strategy that involves skipping over words and sections to grasp the main idea. According to Daniel Willingham, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, skimming is fine as long as it doesn't affect understanding. That is sufficient for most beach reads. For example, they don't require us to recall details of a scene or deal with many complex words. Familiarity with the text type also influences reading strategies. Those who read a lot of mystery novels can skip sections while still understanding the plot.
Experts often contrast skimming with "close" reading. Close reading requires greater focus and is typically more time-intensive, making it challenging to maintain attention. When readers engage in close reading, they actively analyze and interpret the text, make connections, and critically evaluate the information presented. This level of cognitive (认知的) processing is believed to activate various regions of the brain involved in comprehension, memory, and problem-solving, leading to a more extensive and integrated neural (神经的) response.
In today's fast-paced digital world, balancing between skimming for efficiency and close reading for depth can improve our reading experience and learning abilities.
28. What do surveys show about Americans?
A.They tend to skim long articles.
B.They spend less time on reading.
C.They read texts with high efficiency. D.They prefer e-books to printed books.
29. In which situation is skimming most suitable?
A.Preparing for an academic exam.
B.Reading a light novel for pleasure.
C.Recalling a key scene of beach reads.
D.Understanding the plot of a mystery story.
30. The underlined word “sufficient” in the fourth paragraph probably means “______”.
A. lack B. different C. enough D. suffering
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To discuss different ways of reading.
B.To stress the benefits of close reading.
C.To encourage people to read more books.
D.To show the change in people's reading habits.

China has lifted 7.1 million disabled people in rural areas end poverty and included the equal development of disabled people into its national development plan, according to Cheng Kai, head of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation.
Cheng shared these opinions on Wednesday in Rome at a meeting named “Sharing Development Rights: China’s Practices in Poverty Reduction for Disabled Persons.” The activity was organized together by the Federation, the China International Communications Group, and China’s office working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Cheng stressed that solving poverty problems and improving the life quality of disabled people have been key parts of China’s national fight against poverty. “By lifting 7.1 million disabled rural residents get rid of poverty, China has cut off the old connection between disability and poverty,” he said. “We have created a way suitable for our country’s situation to stop and reduce poverty caused by physical disability.”
He pointed out that ensuring equal development for disabled people has become an important part of China’s national development plan and its long-term green development goal. “This method agrees with the FAO’s idea of ‘leaving no one behind’ and has made the whole world more confident in helping poor disabled people in rural areas,” Cheng added.
Cheng said the Federation is ready to strengthen communication with the FAO and its member countries to improve cooperation in different fields.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said that nearly 15 percent of people around the world have physical disabilities, and they always meet big difficulties in getting resources and jobs, especially in the countryside. C. Global disabled people face huge barriers to employment and resources.
D. China intends to strengthen global cooperation with FAO members.
33. How many rural residents with disabilities have been lifted out of poverty in China?
A. 1.5 million B. 7.1 million C. 15 million D. 71 million

Benefits of Reading
The benefits of reading start with the first book a baby hears and continue into childhood and throughout the child’s life. Here are some reasons why reading is important.
Reading teaches children about the world around them. 36 They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. This builds a store of background knowledge, whichlifts younger children learn to read confidently.
37 When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. When we are reading a story, we are also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.
Children who read do better at school. And they don’t just do better at subjects like reading, English and history. 38
Reading is a great form of entertainment! A paperback book or an e-reader doesn’t take up much space so you can take it anywhere and you’ll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag. 39
Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind. 40 The constant movement, flashing lights and noise are quite stressful for our brains. When we read in silence, the black print on a white page is much less stressful for our eyes and brains.
A. Reading improves concentration.
B. Reading develops a child’s imagination.
C. We seem to have forgotten how to relax and how to be silent.
D. Children learn new words and greatly enlarge their vocabulary.
E. They do better at all subjects and they do better all the day through school.
F. You can read while waiting for a friend or during a flight delay at an airport.
G. By reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience.

As the final bell rang, all the students rushed out of the classroom excitedly. I stayed back to tidy up my desk. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a small blue notebook on the floor under a chair. I picked it up and opened it. It was filled with beautiful poems and warm thoughts about life. There was no name on it, so I decided to keep it and find the owner the next day.
The next morning, I brought the notebook to school and asked my classmates if they had lost it. However, none of them said it was theirs. I felt a little worried. Who wrote these lovely poems? I really wanted to return the notebook to its rightful owner. During the break, I showed the notebook to my teacher Ms. Wang. She read the poems carefully and smiled. “These poems are so beautiful. The writer must be careful and kind,” she said.
Just then, a new student named Lily walked into the classroom quietly. She looked nervous and kept her head down. I suddenly realized that I had never seen her before. Ms. Wang told us that Lily had just moved to our city and joined our class.

参考答案
Paragraph 1:
Seeing Lily so shy, I decided to go up and talk to her. Holding the blue notebook gently, I walked towards her and greeted her with a warm smile. Noticing she was nervous and unfamiliar with the new class, I spoke in a soft voice to relax her. I asked if she had accidentally lost a notebook full of poems. Lily froze slightly, her face flushing with surprise. She hesitated for a second, eyes fixed on the notebook in my hand, seeming unsure how to respond.
Paragraph 2:
A big smile appeared on Lily’s face as soon as she saw the notebook. She nodded excitedly and told me it was her precious notebook. She explained that she loved writing poems to record her feelings, which helped her fight loneliness in a new environment. She had dropped it carelessly after school the previous day. I handed it back to her with sincere praise. This small notebook not only returned her beloved treasure but also built a bridge of friendship between us, making her feel warm and welcomed in the new class.

How do you read? Some people only read dialogue, while others might skip long sections of text or only read
the first and last sentences in a paragraph.Others say they read each word and revisit the same section two or
three times to ensure that they don't miss anything.
The digital age has had a significant impact on how we read.Surveys show that Americans read fewer books
per year than 30 years ago.Although the rise of social media communities has increased book sales over the last
few years, the average American spends about 26 minutes reading per day, compared to three hours on the Internet
or watching TV.
Nowadays,we spend more time skimming (and scanning rather than close reading. Some experts worry
about the loss of our ability to slow down and read deeply. So,is there a "right"way to read?
Skimming is a common strategy that involves skipping over words and sections to grasp the main idea.
According to Daniel Willingham,a psychologist at the University of Virginia, skimming is fine as long as it doesn't
affect understanding. That is sufficient for most beach reads. For example, they don't require us to recall details of a
scene or deal with many complex words.Familiarity with the text type also influences reading strategies. Those
who read a lot of mystery novels can skip sections while still understanding the plot.
Experts often contrast skimming with "close"reading.Close reading requires greater focus and is typically
more time-intensive,making it challenging to maintain attention. When readers engage in close reading, they
actively analyze and interpret the text, make connections, and critically evaluate the information presented. This
level of cognitive (processing is believed to activate various regions of the brain involved in
comprehension, memory, and problem-solving,leading to a more extensive and integrated neural
response.
In today's fast-paced digital world, balancing between skimming for efficiency and close reading for depth can
improve our reading experience and learning abilities.

Benefits of Reading
The benefits of reading start with the first book a baby hears and continue into childhood and
throughout the child's life. Here are some reasons why reading is important.
Reading teaches children about the world around them.36 They are exposed to ways of life,
ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. This builds a
store of background knowledge, whichlifts younger children learn to read confidently.
37 When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into
pictures. When we are reading a story,we are also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own
experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.
Children who read do better at school. And they don't just do better at subjects like reading,English
and history.38
Reading is a great form of entertainment!A paperback book or an e-reader doesn't take up much
space so you can take it anywhere and you'll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag.
39
Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind.40 The constant movement, flashing lights and
noise are quite stressful for our brains. When we read in silence, the black print on a white page is much less
stressful for our eyes and brains.
A.Reading improves concentration.
B.Reading develops a child's imagination.
C.We seem to have forgotten how to relax and how to be silent.
D.Children learn new words and greatly enlarge their vocabulary.
E.They do better at all subjects and they do better all the day through school.
F.You can read while waiting for a friend or during a flight delay at an airport.
G.By reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience
