As an experienced British cyclist and adventure lover, Pete Jones is at present making a long trip across the Eurasian Continent from Britain to China alone. For Pete, camping in the wild and cycling for long distances through inhospitable terrain (不适合人居住的地带) are his second nature.
Mr Jones is currently taking a great journey. Having lived on and off (断断续续地) in Xinjiang for three years, and having visited the country many times since 1992, Pete Jones is no stranger to China. Edward Genochio, another British cyclist who completed a 41,000 km trip to China and back, said one of his goals was to tell people cycling is a safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly means of getting about.
In the UK, the last few years have seen a rise in the number of people choosing two wheels over four, with some estimates (估计) saying the number of people cycling to work has almost doubled in the last five years.
Politicians also see cycling as a way to prove that they are concerned about the environment, with people such as London mayor Boris Johnson often riding to work by himself. But we may have to wait some time before we see him emulating (效仿) Pete Jones in attempting to cycle all the way to China.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (大牧场) in San Isidro. He lets me use his house to hold events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he greeted me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let you use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a poor horse trainer who would go from stable (马厩) to stable, farm to farm, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school was continually interrupted (打断). One day in the last year of high school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to do when he grew up.”
“He wrote a seven-page paper about his goal of owning a horse ranch in great detail. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and even drew a detailed floor plan for the dream ranch. Then the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. But he got a low mark with a note that read, ‘See me after class.’”
“The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive a low mark?’”
“The teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from a poor family. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper, I will reconsider your mark.’”
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’”
“Finally, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He wrote, ‘You can keep the low mark and I’ll keep my dream.’”

三、书面表达

It was a very hot afternoon. My friend Leah and I were waiting for the rush hour train. We were tired and couldn’t wait to get back to the place where we were living.
When the train arrived, we got into the second carriage from the front. The air-conditioning wasn’t working at the rear (后部), so the front was particularly crowded that day. I sat by the window admiring the changing landscape.
Suddenly we felt enormous pressure pushing us backwards into our seats. The windows broke into tiny pieces and dust flew around violently. I could barely open my eyes.
The train was suffering from a crash, and it didn’t feel as if it were going to stop. I thought I would be dead. I thought about my husband Guy, who was supposed to receive the news first. I thought of my dear father and other family members, wondering how each would deal with my death.
Voices began to break through my thoughts. People were anxious. Strangely, I was totally calm. I wasn’t panicking; my heart wasn’t even beating fast. When the train finally stopped, we slowly stood up, pushing off the table that had fallen onto us; others stayed in their seats and many were injured and covered in blood. I could hear screaming. A soldier pushed the damaged door open for us to escape.
Our carriage had run out of rails and we were halfway home. We had a lot of blood on us and I searched my body for wounds, but I didn’t find any. My knees felt painful and my hips were black and blue, and Leah had her hand cut when jumping off the train, but that wasn’t serious.
Helicopters landed and we saw soldiers running in and out. All around us were ambulances (救护车) and people lying on the ground. Everyone was shouting for help. I rang Guy, who was very calm and said he would come and get us. Seeing all these brought me great emotional hurt.Paragraph 1:
It was almost dark by the time we found Guy and he drove us home.

Paragraph 2:
In the days that followed, I convinced myself I had internal bleeding.

Last weekend, I, together with some tourists, took part in an adventurous trip organised by a travel agency along the famous Silk Road from Xi’an to Turpan.
During the trip, we first explored the mysteries of the ancient city Loulan, which greatly satisfied our curiosity. After that, we explored the virgin forest, experiencing the panic of getting lost and the excitement of finding our way out of the forest. What excited us most was travelling across the desert on foot. Without enough food and water, we overcame the difficulties and eventually made it.
Not only did the adventurous trip provide us the opportunity to experience the excitement of travelling, but also a sense of achievement. I firmly believe that the adventurous trip will surely have a positive effect on our life.

三、书面表达
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

In the days that followed, I convinced myself I had internal bleeding.

【参考答案】Paragraph 1:
It was almost dark by the time we found Guy and he drove us home. Slowly I realized what we had just been through. My father arrived later to find me unable to eat, sleep or talk, in a condition of confusion and fear. Why wasn’t I injured? Why did I survive? I think it was a mixture of luck and that we fastened our safety belts, so the force of the crash pushed us into our seats, rather than across the train.Paragraph 2:
In the days that followed, I convinced myself I had internal bleeding. I went to hospital, but doctors told me that I was fine; I think it was just part of the emotional hurt I was feeling. I had survived one of the worst ever train crashes — eight people died and at least 200 were injured in that train crash. But I did escape from the terrible disaster fortunately. Even now, no one knows why it happened.
