Diana Sharma came to New Zealand as an international student to study business. Her journey soon took an unexpected turn toward technology, setting the stage for an inspiring career shift. Today, Diana is the founder and CEO of Mission Ready — New Zealand’s first successful tech-training provider.
Diana was born in Kuwait and went to high school in India. When she left high school, she thought a career in hospitality (酒店业) would be “cool” but after a three-year degree, a short period of time as a management trainee, she realised hospitality was not her thing. Seeking a career that matched with her passions, she explored different paths and discovered her love for corporate talent development.
After researching university programmes worldwide, she finally chose New Zealand. In 2009, Diana took up a Postgraduate Diploma in Business at Unitec in Auckland. The one-year programme was like nothing she’d ever experienced before. Her professor took an innovative approach, teaching his students how to work with companies to help them solve real business problems. Diana grew quickly in this environment and gained so much confidence that she suggested to her professor they try something different. His response? “Bring it on!”
At Unitec, Diana’s various roles focused on exploring innovative approaches to education and promoting partnerships with industry and international education providers. Those partnerships exposed her to a gap in the tech market where companies were crying out for talent, yet graduates were not getting hired. This gave her the idea of setting up a company that would bridge this gap by accelerating (加速) talent development for high-demand tech careers.
The model combined intensive training with professional work experience, producing highly skilled graduates ready for the tech field in less than 8 months. In 2018, Mission Ready was launched. Diana said, “While tech may seem complex, it really comes down to problem solving and remaining agile (敏捷) and continuing to be a lifelong learner. Whether you’re technical or not, there’s a place for you in the industry.” Diana’s story proves that curiosity, courage, and an open mind can lead to extraordinary new possibilities, opening doors never imagined before.
4. How did Diana feel about her hospitality career?
A. Unusually demanding. B. Unfit for her desire.
C. Filled with challenges. D. Packed with chances.
5. What did the professor mean by saying “Bring it on”?
A. He was annoyed at Diana’s suggestion.
B. He was supportive of the bold idea.
C. He thought Diana’s idea was unrealistic.
D. He would take over Diana’s project.
6. What motivated Diana to set up a company?
A. Her ambition to become a CEO.
B. Her interest in tech innovation.
C. The demand-supply gap of tech talent.
D. The encouragement from her partners.
7. Which statement is Diana most likely to agree with?
A. One should think differently to unlock true potential.
B. Schools must set the stage for inspiring career shifts.
C. Having multiple jobs can make you a better employee.
D. Business isn’t a proper career for international student.

AI-generated faces are becoming more and more common. Spotting a fake face created by AI might sound like a job for advanced algorithms (算法), but research suggests humans can learn to do it surprisingly well with just five minutes of training.
A study from the University of Reading found that a brief training showing people common flaws (瑕疵) in AI-generated faces boosted detection rates significantly. Additionally, the research revealed that most people without training perform worse when trying to identify AI-generated faces, often perceiving them as more realistic than actual human photographs.
The findings offer a practical solution to a growing security threat. AI-generated faces have already been used to create fake social media accounts, and as the technology improves, the potential for cheating and misinformation grows.
The study tested 664 participants, including people with exceptional face recognition abilities called super-recognizers. All participants viewed faces created by StyleGAN3, the most advanced face-generation system available at the time of data collection. The AI-generated images were paired with real photographs. Without training, typical participants scored just 42% accuracy when asked to identify which of two faces was AI-generated. Super-recognizers fared better at 54%, but still showed room for improvement.
The training intervention was remarkably simple. Researchers showed participants examples of minor flaws that AI systems sometimes leave in generated images. These included oddly rendered hair, unusual numbers of teeth, or strange transitions where facial features meet the background. Participants then completed ten practice trials and received immediate feedback (反馈) on whether their answers were correct. After that, super-recognizers jumped to 64% accuracy, performing significantly better than chance. Typical participants also improved substantially, getting rid of the tendency to perceive fake faces as more real than real ones.
For now, the message is clear: humans aren’t helpless against AI-generated faces. With just a few minutes of instruction on what to look for, people can significantly improve their ability to spot fakes in an increasingly digital world.
8. What do untrained people think of AI-generated faces according to the research?
A. They are unreliable. B. They have obvious flaws.
C. They are more realistic. D. They can be identified easily.
9. Which word has the closest meaning to “fared” in paragraph 4?
A. Emerged. B. Conveyed. C. Performed. D. Represented.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. Steps of recognizing fake faces. B. Examples of minor flaws in images.
C. The effectiveness of the experiment. D. The method and effect of intervention.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Brief Training Boosts False Face Detection
B. The unrealistic Realism of AI-generated Faces
C. AI-generated Faces: A Growing Security Threat
D. Super-Recognizers: A Practical Solution

Group interactions are an essential part of personal and professional life, and mastering them can significantly benefit our social, work, and personal environments. Communication is a complex (复杂的) process, with body language playing a vital role in how messages are perceived and understood. Understanding body language can significantly improve group interactions, making them more positive and productive.
Unlike verbal language, body language often reveals true thoughts and feelings unconsciously. It can share emotions more directly than words. For example, a bright smile and relaxed shoulders usually show happiness, while leaning back means being not interested. Even small movements, like tapping fingers or avoiding eye contact, can suggest nervousness, which words may try to hide.
Gestures are a valuable component of body language, aiding in clarifying and emphasizing spoken messages during group interactions. Skillful use of gestures can help show passion, support understanding, and maintain engagement (参与) within a group setting. Descriptive gestures, such as using hands to illustrate a concept or directional movements to indicate options, can provide visual strengthening to verbal communication. These gestures help ensure that the group can follow the discussion, especially in complex or technical conversations.
However, too much gestures may become distracting or annoying in group settings. The key is to ensure gestures are purposeful and relevant, naturally adding to the verbal message. Practicing consistency (一致性) in gestures that match the tone and content of your speech helps strengthen the intended message, enabling clearer communication and understanding among group members.
Despite its importance, common misunderstandings about body language often cause misinterpretation. A usual one is treating single movements as absolute cues (暗示): many think crossed arms equal defensiveness, but it could just be a comfortable posture or a response to cold. Another is ignoring context-avoiding eye contact in a serious talk might seem dishonest, but it could result from cultural respect for others. These oversimplified judgments ignored the complexity of body language and its influencing factors.
12. What can we learn about the relationship between body language and verbal language?
A. Words share emotions more directly. B. Verbal language is more widely used.
C. They have the same cultural meanings. D. Body language is more truthful at times.
13. How can descriptive gestures help group interactions?
A. Hiding nervousness easily. B. Clarifying the group setting.
C. Emphasizing key points. D. Avoiding communication mistakes.
14. What does the author suggest in paragraph 4?
A. Be mindful of overusing gestures. B. Use certain gestures on purpose.
C. Maintain unity in language tones. D. Stick to your intended message.
15. Why people often treat single movements as absolute cues?
A. They are often influenced by others. B. They fail to understand other factors.
C. They are used to observing contexts. D. They have simple communication skills.

I’m a high school senior with a mountain of textbooks and a dream of getting into a top university. My days are a series of classes and homework, leaving little room for anything else. I’ve always believed that my academic pursuits are the only things that matter, and household duties are a waste of precious study time. My parents, on the other hand, believe in the importance of contributing to the household. “Jack, ” my mother would say, “education is important, but so are life skills. ” I’d nod, but deep in my heart, I couldn’t care less.
One day, as I was buried in my books, my mother fell ill. She was very weak, and the house quickly turned into a mess. My father, a busy lawyer, could hardly manage his work and the house at the same time. I watched as the dishes piled up in the sink, and the laundry overflowed from the basket. It was chaos, and for the first time, I felt guilty. “Jack, ” my father said, his voice heavy with worry, “we need your help. ” I looked at him, then at the mountain of books, and sighed. I had no choice but to put my studies on hold.
Cleaning wasn’t as simple as I thought. I struggled with the dishes, and the laundry machine seemed to have a mind of its own. I was sad, and my thoughts kept drifting (飘移) back to my unfinished math problems. “Why can’t I just focus on my studies?” I whispered to myself. As I wiped the kitchen counter, I overheard my parents talking. “He’ll understand one day, ” my mother said weakly. My father replied, “He’s got to learn that life isn’t just about books. ” Their words touched me emotionally. I paused, the cloth in my hand, and considered their words.

【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. A

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Descriptive gestures, such as using hands to illustrate a concept or directional movements to indicate options, can provide visual strengthening to verbal communication. 【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“However, too much gestures may become distracting or annoying in group settings. The key is to ensure gestures are purposeful and relevant, naturally adding to the verbal message.(然而,在群体环境中,过多的手势可能会分散注意力或令人讨厌。关键是要确保手势是有目的和相关的,自然地补充语言信息)”可知,作者在本段中建议注意不要过度使用手势,以免分散注意力或令人讨厌。故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“A usual one is treating single movements as absolute cues (暗示): many think crossed arms equal defensiveness, but it could just be a comfortable posture or a response to cold. Another is ignoring context-avoiding eye contact in a serious talk might seem dishonest, but it could result from cultural respect for others. These oversimplified judgments ignored the complexity of body language and its influencing factors.(一个常见的错误是将单一的动作视为绝对的暗示:许多人认为双臂交叉等于防御,但这可能只是一种舒适的姿势或对寒冷的反应。另一个是忽略上下文——在严肃的谈话中避免眼神交流可能看起来不诚实,但这可能是出于对他人的文化尊重。这些过于简单的判断忽略了肢体语言的复杂性及其影响因素)”可知,人们之所以经常将单一动作视为绝对暗示,是因为他们没有理解其他影响因素,如文化背景或个人舒适度等。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As my mother recovered and the house returned to its usual order, I found a new balance.

【答案】 Over the next few days, as I continued to help with the chores, I began to see things differently. At first, my hands trembled while chopping vegetables, and I burned toast repeatedly. But gradually, I learned to finish tasks efficiently according to recipes and time. Surprisingly, organizing chores taught me focus. One evening, as I prepared a simple dinner, my father smiled, “Your mother would be proud.” His words warmed me. I realized chores weren’t only duties, but also they were acts of care. Even studying became lighter after tidying my desk. Life skills can shape my independence like hidden tools.
As my mother recovered and the house returned to its usual order, I found a new balance. I created a schedule allocating specific hours for both homework and chores. When Mom praised my perfectly folded shirts, I grinned, feeling a pride I’d never gotten from straight A’s. Now, I study with sharper focus, knowing that a tidy desk and a calm mind go hand in hand. Even after Mom took back most chores, I still volunteer to cook weekends. I learned that a balanced life between study and chores was the key to a fulfilling and successful life.
