Ink-wash painting is an ancient and beautiful Chinese art. What happens if we use it in animation? For years, Chinese animators have worked on mixing the old with the new. Their works look really cool. China’s first ink-wash animation came out in 1960. It’s called Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother (《小蝌蚪找妈妈》). All the animals, plants, and rocks in the film were drawn with ink and brush. The animators learned from the great artist Qi Baishi.
The film is only about 15 minutes long. But it took lots of work. Without computers, the animators had to draw everything by hand. One second of animation needs 24 pictures! To save time, the clever artists stamped (盖章) the tadpoles’ bodies on paper with a special seal (印章). Then, they drew the tails.
Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother won many prizes. From then on, ink-wash animations became popular in China. Now, animators are combining ink-wash painting with computer technology. That makes their works look fancy and cool!
24. How many pictures are needed for just one second of the cartoon?
A. 12. B. 18. C. 24.
25. What part of the tadpoles did the artists stamp with a special seal?
A. Their eyes. B. Their bodies. C. Their tails.
26. What does the underlined word “fancy” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Old. B. Beautiful. C. Simple.
27. What is the article mainly about?
A. The life of the great Chinese artist Qi Baishi.
B. Computer pictures are much better than drawings by hand.
C. Chinese artists mix ink-wash painting with animation
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. C

In a conversation in a foreign country, you can use polite expressions like “hello” or “excuse me”. These expressions are friendly, and people around you can be happy to help.
When you need to ask someone for something, try to be clear.
You can say, “I was wondering if you could tell me...” This is a nice way to start a question. If you need help finding a place, you might say, “Would you mind helping me find it?” This direct way is still very polite. If you’re looking for suggestions, you can say, “I was hoping you could give me some ad vice on…” It shows you care about their opinions.
After you get help from someone, it’s important to say thank you. You can say, “Thank you for your time,” or “Thank you so much!” It shows your appreciation (感激) for their help.
Sometimes, you might not know if someone speaks English.
It’s OK to ask! You can say, “Do you speak English?” It’s a simple way to find out. You could also say, “Are you comfortable speaking English?” It shows you care about their feelings.
Asking for help in a foreign country can be easy. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about the language. Just ask nicely. With a sweet smile and a few polite words, you can get the help you need and maybe even make a new friend or two!
